While traveling the beautiful backroads of Texas, my hungry colleagues and I stumbled upon the Horny Toad. Located in the middle of nowhere, in a quiet little sleepy town. Tucked away on a quiet street. Nothing fancy at all about this place. My colleagues and I strolled right in and were greeted promptly by a friendly face. We walked past the bar and were seated right away with. Totally digging the rustic atmosphere and the western decor. We were given menus and drink orders were taken. We perused the menu and drinks were back in good time. Lots of good options on the menu, and a lot of different ways to order a burger. Our friendly waitress was very helpful with lots of other customizations of other orders. (sorry I did not catch her name!) Also quick with a recommendation or witty banter to a couple of smart aleck coworkers of mine. All in good fun of course. I kept it simple. A bacon cheeseburger with mayo and no veggies. I did not chose to upgrade my burger with the "toad bun" and got a side order of tator tots. (That is not a misspelling on my part. That's how they are printed on the menu). After some great conversations with my colleagues, our food arrived in good time. The room got awfully quiet as we got to it. My burger was nothing short of amazing. Very juicy, flavorful, and it did not last long on my plate. Bacon was crispy, cheese was gooey, and all on good bread. Tator tots were crispy and everything a tator tot should be. I did hear some of my colleagues who ordered the "toad bun" say the upgraded bun did not hold up well and did not hold up well to the juicy burger. They said it was tasty, but went soggy fast. So, keep that in mind if you order one. We finished our burgers, and walked up to the front to pay. By this time it was getting busy, and you could see a lot of the "regulars" passing the time with the waitstaff whom were all on a first name basis. Like that, we all were gone in a flash. I was very happy we visited this little hole in the wall joint, and hope to stumble across it again one day. Highly recommend this little jewel if you are in the area. Service was very slow. 1 hour for a to go order. Waitress thought she lost my order, so she retook the order again. When she went to turn my order in again she found the original order. By the time I got home the order was cold and 1 of the orders was correct. over priced for what you get. read more

Onion ring starter was gone in a couple of minutes......excellent. 1 had a burger with Toad Bun, 1 had the SOB with a Toad Bun, 2 had Philly Cheese Steaks. All of us raved about all of it. I was looking for someplace different to take my wife for her birthday. With a name like Horny Toad this had to be what I was looking for. It did not disappoint. The reviews said the food was good and they didn't lie. I got a cheeseburger on Toad bread. Yum. My wife got the Philly cheese steak. It was a lot but she ate it all which rarely happens. If your traveling and come across this gem make sure you stop in for a burger. We have come to love this place. Found it while looking for property in the area. Never stopped in because we were not sure it would be a family appropriate because a lot of times we saw a lot of motorcycles out front, not that that's a problem because we are riders as well, but assumed it would be more of a bar atmosphere. But after getting several recommendations when asking where a really good place to eat and hearing that it was a must that we eat there we finally gave it a try. My personal favorite is the B-witch burger with a "Toad" bun. My son loves the quesadillas, and my husband has several favorites. Over the years we have tried most everything and it is all good. Our favorite nights to come is Thursdays nights. They rotate 4 specials, some are fried catfish (some of the best you'll eat-prepared differently on Thursday nights), grilled ribeye another night is pork chops, but our favorite if the chicken fried ribeye. We always try to make it that night. If you are planning on having a special make sure you call ahead since there are only a minimum number of specials. Nothing to complain about here but if they want to improve on anything maybe add "sweet" tea to the menu! Not only the is the staff friendly but the locals are just as welcoming. Make sure you give it a try next time you are in the area or make it a destination like a lot of people do on Saturdays when out for a drive. The Horny Toad is the kind of place where, if you're within 10 miles and hungry, you HAVE to stop by. Just the kind of in-the-middle-of-nowhere cool place that requires a visit. Or three. Burgers were the star of our recent visit. Yes, get the "Toad" bun (there's little evidence of jalapeno heat, but those soft sourdough buns complement the excellent burgers well). These are burgers that will send you home happy. We also had the usual assortment of fried sides -- all good, though nothing unbelievable. My favorite place in Bosque County! Sandy and Owen have become so successful, yet so generous to the community with causes such as "Nicki Covers the Cold." They took this pain of loosing their daughter and turned it into a worthwhile cause. The food, prices and drinks are great and have been featured in magazines. You have a date and you want to do something a little different then the movie and dinner deal, because really how unique is that. Don't dress to impress put on some jeans and a ball cap pick your date up on a early Saturday afternoon pack a couple of bottles of water in a small ice chest and surprise her with a drive right down to cranfills gap. Be patient sign in with the hostess and grab those bottles of water and take a walk around. The food is great the atmosphere is nice a little noisy at times and the wait staff could be a little more friendly, but when it's all said and done you were in comfortable clothes, you get out of the city, you see another side of your date she will either love it or hate it. If they break up with you not my fault probably wouldn't have worked out anyway there just a fuddy dud movies and dinner kinda bore anyway. WHO WANTS THAT! I gave them a 4 star because long wait times and staff is not a pleasant as they should be, but it could be to understaff and overworked. Think of this place next time you go out on a date, if not here think outside the box play in the fountains , eat off the food trucks fly a kite anything but dinner and the movies. Me and my dad stopped by here on our way home from burnet back to Fort Worth. We went out of our way and added an extra 30 minutes to our trip to give it a shot and it was 100% worth it. This was some of the best food we have ever had. Can not stop raving about it. The burgers were top notch and the chili cheese tots we had I couldn't get enough off. First things first, this is a fully smoking establishment. Not only in the bar area, but also at the tables in the dining area EVEN though there is at least one sign posted that says No Smoking. Patrons only had to ask for an ashtray and the waitress would bring one. Wish I knew before we placed our order. Because this place is so out of the way, I really wanted to like it. I give two stars because the waitress was really friendly and the food was hot. But the food is not great or fantastic, as reported by some on here. It is edible but not entirely fresh. The chicken sandwich was bland and previously frozen type meat. The fries needed seasoning. The burger was average. Tator tots were greasy and clumped together. It is definitely a place for the locals to hang out, but would not recommend to go out of your way to try this joint. read more

When visiting long time friends in the Gap over the years I have been here many times and have always enjoyed it but it never occurred to me to write a review until this weekend after two meals here. The food has always been remarkably good, but after the fried catfish on Thursday night (the Thursday night special) and the Chicken Fried Steak on Saturday (the Saturday lunch special) I realized, hey, this is really, really nicely done. The catfish could not have been fried any better. A+. As good as fried fish gets. Came out piping hot, with a super crispy and flavorful corn meal crust. The cole slaw and beans were good but could both use some enhanced flavor in my opinion. And of course, there is the ubiquitous mound of french fries that I don't know anyone makes their way through, (though now that I think about it a couple of ranchers at our table who are 10 years older than I (I'm 70) did. I reckon that says more about how hard they work than about my personal city dweller meal capacity. Don't know if they're still doing it but on, I think, Friday nights, they used to charcoal grill rib eye's for the special. Not a particularly thick cut but plenty tasty and the price is right! Find out! The CFS was likewise fried perfectly with a crispy and very tasty crust. Mashed taters are the real deal and the cream gravy is really, really good. Needed some more pepper, but that's up to the diner's personal taste. The green beans are prolly out of a can, but they're quite tasty as they have clearly gone to work on 'em back in the kitchen. The Marg tasted like it was done with a Marg mix, which is what I expected here, but it was quite tasty and enjoyable. This is just a very cool venue and worth a road trip from Cowtown. With the Chisholm Trail Parkway I can get from NRH to the Gap in 1:40. read more

So I am partying at my friend's ranch in Meridian, TX. Where do we go if we want a change of pace and go out?? Well, in the middle of nowhere -- I am from the city and everything out here is the middle of nowhere -- in Cranfils Gap (which again, I've never heard of) is the Horny Toad Bar. Honestly, I'd be scared to go into a bar like this in the country, but with a bunch of country friends, sure, why not? Everyone, especially the supposed owners, were very nice and we had a blast. I saw a bachelorette party here. Really, a bachelorette party. They must be from an even smaller town to be going out here. Anyhow, this is evidently a favorite among my friends whenever we meet in Meridian. I like it too. read more

Great burgers and a great motorcycle road trip. There are plenty of back roads that will take you anywhere you want to go for as long as you want to go. When you go inside the restaurant you step up to the bar and order your food. When they are busy, mostly on a sunny weekend, it takes awhile for you to get your food, but with good friends to chat with it is just part of the charm. Just went out yesterday; very friendly rustic hang out/destination in a small town, Cranfills Gap, population 280, where according to the sign they mainly spoke Norwegian well into the 20th Century.. They do have a couple of craft beers--they can get you a Firemans4 out of Blanco Texas or a Lawnmower out of Houston, The Firemans is almost an IPA. And they have free wifi, just ask. You need the wifi because your cell phone might not have any bars--because you are out there in the country, man. I thought the food was a tad pricey for what it was, but in a town without a grocery store, supplies have to be hauled in by wagon train. mainly a beer joint. Nice outside seating, and you pretty much have the ghost town to yourselves. Worth visiting. read more

The cheeseburger on the "Toad bun" deserves a spot on the cover of Texas Monthly's Burger issue! It's that good! This place is as Texan as you can get with great food and friendly staff. It is the perfect stop after a visit to the nearby Rock Church and a scenic drive down FM 219. Be sure and try the battered and fried onion and jalapeño strips while you are there as well! read more
