I thought "Hoosier Thai" was an odd name for a Thai restaurant until I walked inside. The walls are a tribute to Bobby Knight and other Hoosier greats. It's a museum of famous Bobby Knight moments (even the chair). Worth a visit just to see the memorabilia (especially if you're a fan). I should mention for those that don't know, Bobby Knight was a world famous coach of winning IU basketball teams. He had a unique temperament that gained him international notoriety. But now for the food. The menu offers standard Thai favorites (but no lunch menu). Artistic, fresh, flavorful and hot are a few words that describe the food. I had the Pad Kee Mao (drunken noodles). The vegetables were fresh (not frozen). The carrots were cut into beautiful flowers. The attention to detail was evident. The tangy sauce permeated the noodles. The chicken was tender. The portion was generous (I took half home.) My husband enjoyed his Chicken Pad Thai. Again, the portion was filling. The chicken was tender with lots of fresh bean sprouts and peanuts. Our server was super friendly and attentive. She checked on us several times and kept water glasses filled. She also told us that the Bobby Knight memorabilia came from the former owner of the building. Romantic vintage 70's music played above the IU basketball pics. The place has a small town diner feel with a distinct quirky, fun tribute to a basketball legend. The restaurant is on the lower level of the building. We climbed down stairs but I noticed an elevator from the upper accessible level is available. Restrooms are upstairs as well. We found free street parking around the block, but expect to pay $5 for parking on busy days. Bottom line - the food and service are excellent. The IU basketball decor is fascinating. Overall, 5 stars easy (and I'm not even a BK fan)! read more

Love, love, love the Chicken Satay! I was here last year while in Nashville, Indiana and I knew I wanted to come back. I could have ate a double order because they are so very flavorful and good! The peanut butter sauce was amazing. The cucumber relish lacked some cucumbers and carrots but it was still good. The fried rice was also very good. The service was good considering it was a party of 7. The restaurant was fairly busy for a Tuesday evening and very conducive to conversation. Lots of Indiana Hoosier memorabilia all over the restaurant. I will definitely come again! read more

For those times when you want great Thai food, but you also want to be surrounded by Indiana University paraphernalia and Bobby Knight nostalgia, you come to Hoosier Thai. The juxtaposition is strong at this Thai restaurant. You are eating Thai food in what is basically a museum dedicated to IU basketball history. It sounds completely bizarre, but somehow, it just works. I'm not a die-hard IU fan, but I'm also not-not an IU fan. My allegiance lies somewhere between indifference and ignorance. (Yay, sports!) However, I was impressed by the amount of IU things everywhere. There are a LOT of IU things everywhere! I learned that the collection of IU things used to belong to the previous owners, who at one time ran a sandwich shop in this space. One of the stipulations in the sale was to keep all of the IU tchotchkes and memorabilia in the new restaurant. So, the owners of Hoosier Thai leaned into their new role and kept all of the IU stuff, but then also did what they did best and began offering great Thai food. And the food! This is some great Thai food, and it's certainly the best Thai that you will find in Nashville. I am but a simple lady, and I almost always order shrimp pad Thai when I visit a new Thai restaurant. It's my litmus test! The shrimp pad Thai is great here, I just wish I had the foresight to also order a side of rice to go with it. (I know -- carbs on carbs). But eating rice and pad Thai together is my favorite way to eat pad Thai, because the blandness of the rice balances out the sweet-and-spiciness of the noodles. I visited Hoosier Thai with a few other people who had eaten here before, and they told me that the coconut milk soup (Tom Kha), the curries and the orange chicken were great. So do with that information what you will! The entrance to Hoosier Thai is like entering a speakeasy: You need to descend several steps. As far as I can tell, the entrance is not accessible at all, unless there's a different entrance elsewhere that I didn't see. read more

Nicest workers! I had a group of five plus two little kids and caused lots of chaos and the workers were so helpful and flexible with us. Especially when water was spilled onto a plate full of food and they immediately cleaned it up and made us a new plate! The food tasted great and I have a gluten and peanut allergy and they were super accommodating and even had a gluten free menu! I cannot wait to come back next time I'm in town! read more

Walked in and was immediately greeted by a super kind hostess ! She made me feel very welcome, sat me at a table, and poured me some water. I ordered the chicken pad Thai, spicy level 1, and a Thai milk tea. I believe I ordered it and it wasn't a minute later before it arrived at my table (hyperbolizing, but the service was FAST). Both the pad Thai and tea were delicious ! Definitely what I needed on a cold day. The decor took me off guard at first because it's all IU sports memorabilia. Then I realized the name Hoosier in the restaurant's name. It wasn't super busy, probably due to the time of year. Give this little place some love ! read more

Might be a five, but a small sample. You must find walls (floor to ceiling) of Indiana University sports memorabilia to your liking, and a parking space in crowded downtown Nashville. The food was pretty good. Favorite Thai-American food is here and although they were slammed on a Thursday evening, service was good and the ingredients were first-rate. I didn't find touches that would push it to a five-star; nonetheless the food was pretty good. It's not a huge place, and not handicapped accessible. All this said, I'd go back. Everything was so freshly made. Hands-down, the best dumplings I've ever had at any Asian restaurant. I stopped ordering them at other places because they come with thick dough wrapped around the meat or their bland and have no flavor. These came beautifully presented extremely dense very light outer wrapping with intense flavor. They were so hot and fresh I could've made them my entrée. My only issue with them was they came in an order of five and I had to fight my husband for the last one. He also ordered the crab Rangoon, which was fantastic. They were very good very sweet though. I think they could make the filling last week because the sauce that comes with it is amazingly sweet too so another excellent dish. We shared the pad Thai and added chicken again. The rice noodles were cooked very well and it was absolutely 100% delicious. I'm 2 1/2 hours away and I was considering driving back just for those dumplings. The entire experience made me wonder why I hadn't gone there every day that I've spent in Nashville. I'll be back! read more

This place has amazing Thai food. The kids loved the fried rice and orange chicken. I had Massaman curry and was head over heels. The spring rolls on the app menu were cooked perfectly. The ambiance is all things Indiana University. As a Boilermaker alum it was over the top...but you got to respect the banners and the ambiance was neat. read more

Hoosier Thai is such a great addition to Nashville! Their dishes rival those from our favorite Indianapolis Thai restaurants, and our favorites include drunken noodles, rotisserie chicken fried rice, and cashew chicken. Servings are large, so we usually eat half and take the other half home. The servers help make for a nice dining experience, especially Rubee. read more

On our yearly Fall trek to Brown County. Monday was our day. I was the car passenger so I started to search for a different place to try. It was surprising to see a few restaurants state they were closed since it was the height of the tourist season. We walked by a couple other cafes where we didn't like the menu. Another actually required a reservation on a Monday, early afternoon. So onward we went. We looked across the street and saw a sign that said Hoosier Thai. My daughter had been there a long time ago when they served burgers and American food. We walked in and saw it was still decorated in red and the same IU Hoosier sports memorabilia. So they weren't kidding about the Hoosier part of Thai! It wasn't very busy at all for Noon. The menu had a lot of choices. The service was great and fast. Two servers waited on us. :-) We split crab rangoon (really really good), Spring rolls, and chicken Thai fried rice. (Med heat). Dipping sauce for the apps was good. The fried rice came out nice and steaming hot. Super tender chicken and fresh vegs. It was a great lunch! We highly recommend this place. We count on going back on our next trip to Nashville. This is our second time going to this restaurant and the food was great each time. I had Pai Tai the first time and Green Curry the second time, each was great! I I ordered a spice level of hot and it was perfect for me, I like spicy food. The service was prompt each time and the waitress was there whenever needed, refilling water, getting carry out boxes. Some of the best Thai food I have ever had, truly. Love the food, TRIPLE HATE their service. The first time service was slow and not friendly, my husband and I thought it was because they just opened or were stressed. The second time, wait staff was indifferent and were pressed to serve us. This third and last time (October 5), two tables sat down after us and were served before us. Our plan was to walk out, and we should have. I asked the wait staff to take our order and I believe she grudgingly agreed. We received our food (which again, was amazing) but witnessed the wait staff totally pack up food for and engage with two tables next to us and continue to ignore my husband and me--at this point, we surmised why they ignored us. We left a 25% tip and made the decision to never go back. Do better by ALL of your customers--you have lost us for the lifetime of your restaurant, and we live in this community and would have continued to bring you business far after the fall season.
