    P1. Pad Thai with tofu.
    Colby T.

I have only ever picked up or had food delivered from Happy Thai but it has consistently been very good. When I went into the restaurant to pickup the food every employee was very friendly and greeted me. They were prompt at the register, always having the bag ready for pickup. The inside of the restaurant is really nice with warm lighting. The portions of their food are huge, usually leaving leftovers for the next day. There are a lot of flavors going on in their dishes, and they Pad Thai is one of the best in town.

Drunken Fried Rice w/beef, Lunch to-go portion (minus a few bites)
    Zachary H.

Great food, great staff! I stopped by for lunch and was greeted by extremely helpful staff right away. The gentleman who took my order was helpful with describing their different portion sizes and spice levels. I ended up getting the drunken fried rice with beef (lunch portion) at a level 4/5 spice. I like my thai and Ramen hot enough that I almost start sweating, and this was comfortably at that level. The food came out within 5 minutes, and it was DELICIOUS! The peppers were cooked just right and the beef and rice were full of flavor. I ordered to-go but the inside was cute and cozy and they have an outdoor patio space. Definitely made my top 3 favorite list for drunken noodles/rice, so I'll definitely be back when I'm in the area again!

Stir-fried curry noodles w/ tofu, Thai iced tea

Happy Thai is very aptly named. With the very welcoming and friendly service from the waiter, it was hard not to be happy eating there. The interior is more comfortable than you might expect from the outside. The building isn't decrepit or anything, the outside appearance just does not prepare you for the warmth inside. I had a Thai iced tea and the stir-fried curry noodles with tofu. Good Thai tea, very creamy, maybe a little on the sweet side, but not too excessive. I loved the curry noodles. The presentation wasn't fancy but the taste was right on. The portion was pretty generous and I thought I wouldn't be able to finish, but I did end up finishing it all because it was so good and not heavy, but very satisfying. I ordered it "hot", which is spice level 3/5, and while calling it "hot" might be generous, I did think the spice level was appropriate for a 3/5 (the spicier levels are "extra hot" and "Thai hot"). Also, since I ordered the dish with tofu, I appreciated that the waiter asked if I was okay with fish sauce (I was, but there was the option to remove it) and with egg (I went with no egg). The prices for my noodles and Thai tea were appropriate. Besides the pleasantness of the service, it was also not a very long wait for food after ordering. I'll consider coming back next time I'm in the area.

    PAD PRIK KHING, Thai Hot!
    Xuan W.

First time visit to this little restaurant, but it definitely won't be my last. The restaurant setting is small and intimate. The staff are kind and friendly. I had Pad Prik Khing, ordered Thai Hot!! Normally when I order Thai Hot, the expected heat level and the actual is disappointing, but not here! The dish was most flavorful and the heat level was perfect. My only disappointment was that they don't sell beer to wash it all down, but that won't keep me away.

Their vegetarian dumplings are all tasty but each is a little different. I've only tried the steamed so far because I really like the tenderness of the steamed version. The dumplings come with soy sauce and chili sauce for dipping, which are not optional - you need to dip them for the best experience. The chili sauce isn't too hot, so you can and should be generous with it. The Tibetan tea is interesting - it's a smooth milk tea, kind of like a milder version of Indian chai, but it does have its own unique taste that I can't totally put my finger. Other drinks are all good too, thought some aren't exactly as you might expect. The iced Indian tea is a little milky for my taste but the hot version is stronger. The Thai iced coffee is great but it's less sweet than the usual ones (not inherently good or bad, just depends on your preference). The mango lassi tasted closer to mango juice, but it was really refreshing. All of the food is kind of different from the usual restaurant style food from the various cuisines represented on the menu; it feels more like home cooking, so more subtle flavours, less salty and a little lighter, but very wholesome and hearty. The hotter spice level comes from a chili paste they add, and I recommend getting at least a level 2 (level 1 is no spice), because the chili paste also flavours the dish and level 2 is still pretty mild. The people are very kind and I love the calming atmosphere. I have seen them get busy in the evening on weekends, but usually you can count on being able to get a table.

Their response was "chef tried his best". The bill was over $100 so we were just hoping for an adjustment for the bill. I work in restaurants and I hate when people don't give us a chance to fix things. The satay was SAD. It was obviously random chicken breasts sliced and no marination or flavor. The beef was gray and looked boiled. I don't think there was a bit of salt anywhere in any dish. The mango lassi was watery and thin. Seems like they're cutting corners everywhere. When I picked up the food they didn't have a drink carrier or a box for me to carry 2 bags and 3 styrofoam cups out with. So, in review, if you like food that tastes like water (literally) and underwhelming, this is your place. If you expect flavor and precision, professionalism and a great experience, go elsewhere. Sorry guys, we gave you a chance to fix it but now everyone needs to hear about it!

The night I visited, they were very busy, with a large party in the back part; however, they didn't miss a beat, and service was as good as you would hope. Food was so good, I had to order a second dish, so I could take the first one home to the wife! We also found the prices to be reasonable. A high bar has been set. I showed up about 50 minutes after ordering and my food was hot and ready on arrival. The host who greeted me and brought out my order was very friendly. While I was waiting for him to get my food from the back, another staff member also came by to check that I was being helped. I ordered the fried eggplant stir-fry with tofu and the coconut ice cream. The stir-fry tasted good, but I selected spice level 3 "hot" (and the takeout container had a "3" written on it so I know they got it), yet there was not a hint of spice in the dish, not even a single chili flake. I don't know if they messed up and forgot to add the spice or what, but I was kind of let down. Taking the heat level out of the equation, it would rate it about average for American Thai food. I wasn't really impressed by the dish, but I enjoyed it (spicy is nice but not a must-have for me if there are other flavours). I liked the coconut ice cream dessert. The included banana spring rolls were helpfully packaged in foil separate from the ice cream, so I warmed them up in my oven a little, and they were very good warm. I'm pretty sure that what the menu calls "homemade coconut ice cream" was actually vanilla bean ice cream with shredded coconut on top. Which is still delicious but not what is written on the menu. Based on my single visit, I don't think this is close to the best Thai in Bloomington, but it's alright, and I might come here again because it's closer to home than the other places I like. I might have even given the food 4 stars if it had just been described differently on the menu, but the lack of spice in a dish that was supposed to be made hot plus the "homemade coconut ice cream" not being that left a little bit of a bad impression.

Appetizer came out quickly and entrees came out when the appetizer was 3/4 gone. Perfect timing. The edamame appetizer was hot and had plenty of salt, which is exactly how I like it (9.5/10)! I had the crispy chicken with pineapple (served in half of a pineapple) and spouse had the orange chicken. He said his was good (8/10), but I loved the pineapple chicken (9.8/10). He had no leftovers, I left with about half of my entree. We took a mango sticky rice to go and then drove around town for about 45 minutes before going back to the hotel to eat it (for context - I'm sure it's even better eaten in the restaurant). Even with it sitting at room temperature in a styrofoam container for about an hour after preparation, it's still a 9.9/10 for me. The mango sticky rice was a perfect ending to an excellent meal. When in Bloomington again, we will definitely be back. We may visit again before leaving town - it's that good.

My Thai on the westside of Bloomington is not merely a restaurant…read more It is an institution. A temple. A weekly ritual site. A blessed carbohydrate-and-curry sanctuary where my family has been eating once a week for ten years, which in restaurant loyalty years is basically a dynastic blood oath. I have eaten here through different seasons of life, different levels of exhaustion, different versions of myself, and probably several minor existential collapses. And through it all, My Thai has remained the most consistent restaurant I have ever eaten at. Not "pretty consistent." Not "usually good." I mean shockingly, mathematically, almost suspiciously consistent. Like somewhere in the back there is a monk, a wizard, and a very serious Thai grandmother operating a flavor reactor calibrated by NASA. My go-to is the Pad Prik King with chicken, because I am a simple man with a complicated nervous system and a deep spiritual need for spicy green beans. The green beans come in hot and crunchy like they are ready to fight for their honor. The sauce is rich, spicy, savory, and just the right amount of "hello, your face is awake now." The chicken is there doing noble chicken work. Bawk bawk, little warrior. Bawk bawk. This dish does not ask for attention. It seizes it. It kicks open the door wearing sunglasses, throws a handful of basil into the air, and says, "Get in, we're going to flavor town, but the weird respectable Bloomington version." And the best part? It is always good. Always. For ten years. Do you understand how rare that is? I have seen empires rise and fall faster than the quality control at My Thai. The service is friendly, the food is dependable, and the whole place has the comforting energy of, "Yes, the world is strange and unstable, but your Pad Prik King will still arrive correctly." That matters. Five stars. Ten years of loyal service. My Thai westside is one of Bloomington's great constants, and my spicy green bean chicken kingdom remains undefeated. BIG BADA BOOM!

We started with the ttuk kko chi which were rice cakes covered in a gochujang sauce. The cakes were crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. The sauce it was in was amazing, balancing the heat from the gochujang with some sweetness. Next, we got the Korean fried chicken (they were out of KFC wings). I remember the sauce being a little more red last time, but it was still good. Super crispy exterior and no excess batter so we just tasted the juicy chicken. The two entrees we got were the spicy chicken and jaeyuk. The spicy chicken was flavorful and tender. Along with the chicken, the veggies were stir fried nicely and coated in the broth. The jaeyuk was a little better with the pork having a great marinade and also being super tender. On top of the food we ordered, we were given a salad, soup, and rice which were all nice accompaniments. This was the meal I was looking forward to the most in my return and it did not disappoint.
