The larb here is really, really good, as is the sticky rice I ordered with it. Tofu fried perfectly, fresh lime and fish sauce punching through, and a 3/5 spiciness that's actually the right amount of spice for me. Sticky rice sops up the juice perfectly. Next time I want Thai food, I won't hesitate to come here again, and any time anyone suggests any other Thai place in town, I'll try to go to Happy Thai instead. read more

When I went into the restaurant to pickup the food every employee was very friendly and greeted me. They were prompt at the register, always having the bag ready for pickup. The inside of the restaurant is really nice with warm lighting. The portions of their food are huge, usually leaving leftovers for the next day. Great food, great staff! I stopped by for lunch and was greeted by extremely helpful staff right away. The gentleman who took my order was helpful with describing their different portion sizes and spice levels. I ended up getting the drunken fried rice with beef (lunch portion) at a level 4/5 spice. I like my thai and Ramen hot enough that I almost start sweating, and this was comfortably at that level. The food came out within 5 minutes, and it was DELICIOUS! The peppers were cooked just right and the beef and rice were full of flavor. I ordered to-go but the inside was cute and cozy and they have an outdoor patio space. We went again, and they squeak a 4-star. The food was really good. Happy Thai can be up and down; their carry-out biz is huge and if they get slammed, you're in trouble. However on Mon-Thu and Sun, they shine and are a good value. My partner had their Thai Pineapple Fried Rice, which was deemed very good. So good, that it was finished, a huge portion, then and there. My own Pad See Ew was also stellar, with just the right heat. Fresh veggies made it even tastier We'll go again, but not when they're slammed/super-busy. The menu is varied, and there always seems to be parking. Much of their biz is carry-out, and there's a steady march of door dashers in and out of their small space. Happy Thai is very aptly named. With the very welcoming and friendly service from the waiter, it was hard not to be happy eating there. The interior is more comfortable than you might expect from the outside. The building isn't decrepit or anything, the outside appearance just does not prepare you for the warmth inside. I had a Thai iced tea and the stir-fried curry noodles with tofu. Good Thai tea, very creamy, maybe a little on the sweet side, but not too excessive. I loved the curry noodles. The presentation wasn't fancy but the taste was right on. The portion was pretty generous and I thought I wouldn't be able to finish, but I did end up finishing it all because it was so good and not heavy, but very satisfying. I ordered it "hot", which is spice level 3/5, and while calling it "hot" might be generous, I did think the spice level was appropriate for a 3/5 (the spicier levels are "extra hot" and "Thai hot"). Also, since I ordered the dish with tofu, I appreciated that the waiter asked if I was okay with fish sauce (I was, but there was the option to remove it) and with egg (I went with no egg). The prices for my noodles and Thai tea were appropriate. Besides the pleasantness of the service, it was also not a very long wait for food after ordering. Happy Thai is probably our most visited Thai restaurant in Bloomington. Part of that is simple convenience - it's close to our house, there's almost never a wait, and the service is quick. But to be clear, it's also darn good food. The menu doesn't have as much variety as MyThaiWest, as there's no sushi option, but the food is always hot, quick and delish. My go-to is usually the Drunken Man's Fried Rice. I sometimes add a side of steamed noodles. The ambiance isn't the best, but it's fine for our purposes. It's an old Taco John's, but it works. The servers are also very nice, quick on refills, and on my last visit even expressed concern that my order of 'Thai Hot' might be too hot. I let her know I'd be fine. :). I might sweat, but won't be returning the food anytime soon. Portion sizes are great, food is great. Highly recommend. They're also great for pickup or delivery. read more

The best thai in town, hands down. I've been to all including on the west side but this thai restaurant never disappoints. The staff are extremely kind and professional and the food portions are great (along with the taste). It's a small quiet restaurant inside, they have outdoor seating as well but I typically only get take out from here and have always had a positive experience. They're also the only thai restaurant that seem to be extremely customizable, they offer great vegan/vegetarian options (and will clarify if you want fish sauce/eggs or not)- other thai restaurants in town don't bother asking so I really appreciate this one! You can tell this place is good because they have to warn you they won't do refunds if you order the food too spicy. Because you know people have done that, thinking they'd get Indiana spicy, and accidentally set their mouths on fire. It's an authenticity I've been desperate for since I moved here. First time visit to this little restaurant, but it definitely won't be my last. The restaurant setting is small and intimate. The staff are kind and friendly. I had Pad Prik Khing, ordered Thai Hot!! Normally when I order Thai Hot, the expected heat level and the actual is disappointing, but not here! The dish was most flavorful and the heat level was perfect. Best Thai food in Bloomington! I've loved everything we've tried at Happy Thai, it's very quality and authentic. The restaurant is simple and the service is great. It can be a little bit of a wait because they are usually pretty busy. They get so many takeout/delivery orders that drivers are sitting and standing all over the restaurant. Decent lunch specials. We've tried the pad seew (broccoli and carrots) and pad kee mao (includes broccoli, bell pepper, and tomato) with pork/chicken and they are both good. Very similar except the pad seew is a little sweeter and the pad kee mao has more of a chilli oil sauce. I like that the dishes don't include onions and there are more noodles. The pad thai is not bad but it has more soy sauce and very little tamarind. I've also tried the green curry but didn't like it as much as the noodle dishes. I love Happy Thai! I always get the drunken man fried rice which is probably some of the best fried rice I have ever eaten. It's always the perfect temperature, even if you order it for carry out! This time we also got the crab rangoon which were fabulous as well. The staff are always extremely friendly and attentive despite this restaurant getting hit hard every day with carry out and delivery orders. I really, really wanted to like Happy Thai. The location is great and the folks there seem super nice. The food was correctly spiced per my order and the portions very generous. I got the grilled beef salad, Pad Thai with chicken and Pad Prik Khing with pork. Since it was my first try at Happy Thai, I intentionally ordered very "standard" Thai dishes in hopes of it showing them at their best. Having eaten Thai food in Los Angeles for 20 years, I admit I'm a bit spoiled by very authentic and delicious Thai food. The food I got from Happy Thai was very "Indiana-fied" and frankly, not great. The beef salad was the best dish, though the beef was a little chewy and gristly. I had to spit out a couple of pieces that were too fatty to chew completely. The Pad Thai was extremely plain. I could barely taste the tamarind, and what little chicken that was in it was dry and seemingly not freshly cooked. The green beans in the Pad Prik Khing tasted, frankly, like they came out of a can and the pork, like the chicken, was dry and tasteless. I feel sorry to write this because the people working there seemed so nice and sincere. But the food was somewhere between dreary and dreadful.
