Stir-fried curry noodles w/ tofu, Thai iced tea
    Dana S.

Happy Thai is very aptly named. With the very welcoming and friendly service from the waiter, it was hard not to be happy eating there. The interior is more comfortable than you might expect from the outside. The building isn't decrepit or anything, the outside appearance just does not prepare you for the warmth inside. I had a Thai iced tea and the stir-fried curry noodles with tofu. Good Thai tea, very creamy, maybe a little on the sweet side, but not too excessive. I loved the curry noodles. The presentation wasn't fancy but the taste was right on. The portion was pretty generous and I thought I wouldn't be able to finish, but I did end up finishing it all because it was so good and not heavy, but very satisfying. I ordered it "hot", which is spice level 3/5, and while calling it "hot" might be generous, I did think the spice level was appropriate for a 3/5 (the spicier levels are "extra hot" and "Thai hot"). Also, since I ordered the dish with tofu, I appreciated that the waiter asked if I was okay with fish sauce (I was, but there was the option to remove it) and with egg (I went with no egg). The prices for my noodles and Thai tea were appropriate. Besides the pleasantness of the service, it was also not a very long wait for food after ordering. I'll consider coming back next time I'm in the area.

    PAD PRIK KHING, Thai Hot!

First time visit to this little restaurant, but it definitely won't be my last. The restaurant setting is small and intimate. The staff are kind and friendly. I had Pad Prik Khing, ordered Thai Hot!! Normally when I order Thai Hot, the expected heat level and the actual is disappointing, but not here! The dish was most flavorful and the heat level was perfect. My only disappointment was that they don't sell beer to wash it all down, but that won't keep me away.

Best Thai food in Bloomington! I've loved everything we've tried at Happy Thai, it's very quality and authentic. The restaurant is simple and the service is great. It can be a little bit of a wait because they are usually pretty busy. They get so many takeout/delivery orders that drivers are sitting and standing all over the restaurant. It really bugs me when they wait in line and are hovering over your table while you eat. I wish they would make drivers wait in their car.

Excellent Thai restaurant with high marks for food, service, and atmosphere…read more I've tried the Thai fish cakes, sweet and sour saute, pad bus sa ra com, mango sticky rice, and Thai iced tea and coffee. The savoury dishes were all super flavourful, cooked well, and generously portioned. Maybe this has something to do with the dishes I got, but I think the flavours here are generally more intense than the other Thai restaurants I've tried in Bloomington, and their spice levels might be a little higher. I've been somewhat underwhelmed by level 3 (out of 5) at other places, so I tried level 4 the first time I ordered here, and it was a little too hot, so I went back to level 3 the next time, and it was just right. The Thai tea and coffee were both very good, especially the coffee. It almost tasted chocolatey. The service is consistently on top of it. I was there on Valentine's Day, and they were slammed but had enough staff on the floor for it; the food was quick as usual and everyone was still very friendly. I also love the atmosphere here. The building is one of the converted houses on 4th St, and there are different dining rooms, some with lots of windows, all filled with interesting decor, and there's also a very nice patio during the warmer seasons. The only problem here is, unless there's a back entrance I don't know about, I don't think the building is wheelchair accessible; you have to go up a few stairs to get to the main entrance.

All were great, fresh ingredients, served in concert, and quickly, too. This was a family meal, and all were delighted, including the children with chicken fingers and fries. We're trying to expand their horizons, but picky eaters are tough. The appetizers were especially good, and each has their own different sauce. My order was well-spiced, and there was enough taken home for a second delicious meal. This is perhaps the best and most consistent Thai food in Bloomington. There are rivals to this high throne, and we try them, too, but this is our go-to for no-compromise Thai, every order consistently great.

The menu is very vegetarian-friendly since you can choose tofu as a protein for most entrees, and even vegan-friendly since they have nondairy milk options for drinks and some entrees can be easily customized to be vegan (order with tofu/no meat and remove egg). I got a matcha latte with brown sugar crystal boba and the Pattaya pineapple rice. Matcha latte: The matcha was decent - it had the flavour of matcha latte mix rather than pure matcha, but it wasn't unpleasant, and it was strong. I like the brown sugar crystal boba as a topping - the flavour is very similar to brown sugar tapioca boba, but it doesn't sit as heavy. It's a different kind of chewy than tapioca, but it's close enough that it basically gives the same kind of experience as regular tapioca boba in a drink. Pattaya pineapple rice: Really good! The rice was well-seasoned and the pieces of juicy pineapple and raisins added some sweetness that contrasted very nicely with the curry-spiced rice. They have 5 spice levels (mild, medium, hot, extra hot, Thai hot). I usually went for medium heat when I lived on the west coast, but since this is the Midwest, I tried "hot" and found it had a bit of a kick, but the heat was still secondary to the other flavours, so it was the right choice for me. Very good service. The waiter was very friendly and attentive without hovering - he came by at just the right times. My drink and food came out not too long after I ordered. The place is nice. Like the other restaurants in this area, it's situated in a small house-like building. The atmosphere feels down-to-earth. There were lots of things on the menu that caught my interest, so I'll definitely be back!

They are of course famous for the dumplings, and everything on the dumpling sampler was excellent. The momos were every bit as good as I've had in Toronto's Little Tibet, with a tender skin and a lot of flavor. They also had some more plump dumplings with cabbage and potato, which are a lot like pierogi! All very satisfying. The fried rice was well-made and appropriately spiced for a 2/5. You could taste the oil in each grain, and the beef was cooked nicely. My only complaint would be that I think they used frozen green beans.

Their vegetarian dumplings are all tasty but each is a little different. I've only tried the steamed so far because I really like the tenderness of the steamed version. The dumplings come with soy sauce and chili sauce for dipping, which are not optional - you need to dip them for the best experience. The chili sauce isn't too hot, so you can and should be generous with it. The Tibetan tea is interesting - it's a smooth milk tea, kind of like a milder version of Indian chai, but it does have its own unique taste that I can't totally put my finger. Other drinks are all good too, thought some aren't exactly as you might expect. The iced Indian tea is a little milky for my taste but the hot version is stronger. The Thai iced coffee is great but it's less sweet than the usual ones (not inherently good or bad, just depends on your preference). The mango lassi tasted closer to mango juice, but it was really refreshing. All of the food is kind of different from the usual restaurant style food from the various cuisines represented on the menu; it feels more like home cooking, so more subtle flavours, less salty and a little lighter, but very wholesome and hearty. The hotter spice level comes from a chili paste they add, and I recommend getting at least a level 2 (level 1 is no spice), because the chili paste also flavours the dish and level 2 is still pretty mild. The people are very kind and I love the calming atmosphere. I have seen them get busy in the evening on weekends, but usually you can count on being able to get a table.

I showed up about 50 minutes after ordering and my food was hot and ready on arrival. The host who greeted me and brought out my order was very friendly. While I was waiting for him to get my food from the back, another staff member also came by to check that I was being helped. I ordered the fried eggplant stir-fry with tofu and the coconut ice cream. The stir-fry tasted good, but I selected spice level 3 "hot" (and the takeout container had a "3" written on it so I know they got it), yet there was not a hint of spice in the dish, not even a single chili flake. I don't know if they messed up and forgot to add the spice or what, but I was kind of let down. Taking the heat level out of the equation, it would rate it about average for American Thai food. I wasn't really impressed by the dish, but I enjoyed it (spicy is nice but not a must-have for me if there are other flavours). I liked the coconut ice cream dessert. The included banana spring rolls were helpfully packaged in foil separate from the ice cream, so I warmed them up in my oven a little, and they were very good warm. I'm pretty sure that what the menu calls "homemade coconut ice cream" was actually vanilla bean ice cream with shredded coconut on top. Which is still delicious but not what is written on the menu. Based on my single visit, I don't think this is close to the best Thai in Bloomington, but it's alright, and I might come here again because it's closer to home than the other places I like. I might have even given the food 4 stars if it had just been described differently on the menu, but the lack of spice in a dish that was supposed to be made hot plus the "homemade coconut ice cream" not being that left a little bit of a bad impression.

There are two dining rooms, and I think one is meant to be in a more Thai style while the other one houses the sushi bar, but both the Thai and sushi menus can be ordered in either room. I got a spider supreme roll, a Thai iced tea, and green tea mochi ice cream. The entree order included a complimentary soup. The soup was kind of odd but good. It had the broth for Japanese clear soup but contained diced carrots, peas, and corn (like the mixed vegetables you can get in the freezer at the store) plus the usual green onion. Again, it tasted fine but not like anything I've seen passed off as Japanese or Thai before. Spider supreme roll was pretty good. Maybe a little too saucy. The wasabi had kind of an odd blue tint but tasted alright (not great quality but not like the super cheap stuff), but that's minor. Decent Thai tea. The mochi ice cream itself was good, but I thought it was overdressed. I was skeptical of both chocolate and strawberry sauce with green tea, but it was actually a pretty good combination. However, the two sauces plus the whipped cream plus the sprinkles was just too many different flavours and textures, which took away from the simple mochi ice cream. It might've worked better with the strawberry or vanilla flavours to keep things simpler. The service was okay. The waiters were polite but a little inattentive. They seemed busy though. It wasn't bad food, but my impression is that this is not very authentic execution of sushi. I haven't had much sushi in Bloomington yet so I'm not sure how it compares to other sushi spots.
