Went here today for some brunch with friends. Such a cozy spot and very welcoming as soon as you walk in. We started with a Vietnamese coffees that were absolutely delicious. We ordered a bunch of plates for the table Banana Foster French toast was the best French toast I've ever had, and the Pineapple Kimichi Fried rice were insanely tasty. You have to get the Croque Madame as well quite possibly the best brunch dish I've had in New Jersey. Chef Christine absolutely kills it in the kitchen and an even nicer human being. My son and I had lunch here last week, and it was a bit of a mixed bag. Walking in, I wasn't entirely sure what I was looking at. I liked the rustic seating area and the numerous cookbooks lining the counter space, but there were a series of what were former convenience store-style refrigerators that simply had their glass blacked out against the back wall (turns out this spot was a deli for a number of years?), and the case where the baked goods were displayed looked barren and slapdash. We were promptly greeted and invited to have a seat. As we looked over the menus, we ordered a coffee and a Thai Iced Tea which appeared after five or so minutes. The coffee was fine, and I loved the huge, chunky cup it was served in, although the sugar bowl was oddly missing a spoon. The Thai Iced Tea was a very unusual rendition of the drink, with VERY ginger and turmeric forward flavors. I ended up ordering Chicken and Waffles, and it was very disappointing. The waffles were generic Eggo-style waffles, and while the spicy maple topping was wonderful, the boneless fried chicken thigh was burnt terribly around the edges and was dry throughout. My son enjoyed his breakfast ramen, but the broth was very salty. Both dishes took a significant amount of time to come out despite the fact that we were the only guests present. Did we just catch them on a bad day? Possibly, but inconsistency does seem to be a common theme in some other reviews, so maybe this is par for the course. I know for the price point, I expected better, and with the competition within walking distance in Farnsworth Street, it will probably be a while before I give HoopHouse another shot. read more

We came from Chesterfield, NJ and passed by this Cafe and Bakery in Bordentown City. NJ. I ordered Chicken and Waffle and my wife ordered Chicken Congee. The fried chicken is out of this world, Chicken thigh was buttermilk brined, it's juicy and a bit of Korean fried chicken taste. The sourdough scallion waffle is well cooked with mild thingy spicy maple syrup, taste delicious. The Chicken Congee's rice porridge is well cooked. The poached egg is well matched with the salty chicken tasted like Spanish dried ham. My wife loved and finished the whole meal. We also tried their sage scone, apple cider doughnut and the almond baked dessert. They were baked fresh and all of it are delicious. I considered this place a hidden gem in Bordentown City, near Princeton. Lots of millennials are hanging out here. Sadly they closed at 2pm on Sundays. They open from Wednesday to Sunday, 8 am-2pm. Hoo boy. Little place, kind of scroungy. Seems to be a former florist or maybe small general store. Went for lunch, but heard that owner is a world-class baker, so we hoped for some breads or pastries to take home. Unfortunately, they only had scones to sell separately. Tried to order the $25 Korean-type steak sandwich. "We're out of the steak sandwich today, " said the teenage waitron. Hoo boy. Not a good sign, since the menu is quite small for lunch. Ordered the chicken sandwich and the "ALT", an Avocado, Lettuce and Tomato sandwich, and iced teas. Table was sticky. Hoo boy. Not a good sign. French music on the stereo; owner just got back from there. Noticed that a small boy was playing with the cash register and it was only the owner doing the cooking; figured the boy was her son and the waitron perhaps her daughter. Owner cooked quietly, no banging of pans. I was feeling very sympathetic for them, but wondered about the food that would emerge from this place. The sandwiches arrived, on round, artisanal rolls. The chicken was breaded and fried, a boneless thigh, I think, with kind of savory pan drippings and slices of sweet pickle. Alongside were tiny, lightly salted potatoes, about the size of large marbles, that were halfway sliced, and fried? deep fried?, and a small cup of freshly homemade ketchup, spiced with garam masala. Wowee wow. So good! I never had anything like this. My wife had the ALT, with RIPE & RED, not pink and rubbery, tomato slices, good lettuce and generous slices of avocado, also accompanied by those unusual, delicious potatoes and ketchup. The historic burg of Bordentown, NJ, has yet another excellent kitchen worthy of your tastebuds and time. HoopHouse is owned and run by Chef Christine in a semi-renovated storefront on Farnsworth Avenue. The large room is divided by refrigerated display case and counter between dining area for about a dozen people and an open bakery/cookery that specializes in breakfast and lunch, using homemade breads and desserts as the star attractions. I walked in around 9:00 a.m. one morning last week and was carried away by the time warp created by the cozy atmosphere of large multi pane windows, large old light fixtures, antique furniture and the wonderful aroma of baking bread. I sat at a small table in the rear of the dining room facing the display case and kitchen. The menu is small but interesting. I opted for the Loaded Hash Brown Bowl (well roasted taters, onion, green pepper, red hot pepper flakes and melted cheese under two runny fried eggs), and strong hot house coffee courtesy of Starbucks/Costco. As I waited, I walked closer to the display case and spied a large bowl of plump bagels, also produced in their oven. I ordered one with butter to take to the office for lunch. Christine was my server, and she was obviously very proud of her shop and loved talking about it. I was happy to listen and learn about her American Woman Success Story. And, the meal she delivered was delicious and filling. The combination of lightly spiced hash browns, dripping fried egg, melted cheese was a total joy to eat slowly, and wash down with the refilled mugga joe. Consuming this idyllic grub in this storybook world created by Christina made for a near magical experience. It was classic, aged and warmly inviting a la 1910. I really didn't want to head to work after this, but all good things must come to an end, so I paid the tab and slowly got into my car trying to take as much of this moment with me. This new casual spot in Btown escaped my radar somehow. But thanks to old school social media( ie a hyper local newspaper write up) I was alerted to its existence. I tried to order a few items from the dinner portion of the menu last week, but it was way too early for the chef to whip them up while still serving lunch items. Instead I planned on a lunch visit that occurred a few days ago, and was quite pleased with the food. I ordered curd your enthusiasm and the farmhouse sandwich, and an as yet to be named dessert. The chicken sandwich was good, 2 large thighs that were crispy from the oven, not a deep fryer. Served on house made sourdough with a mustard aioli and a few pickles. I do like thighs in some dishes, but I would have preferred a breast in this situation. I liked the bread too, but a roll or biscuit might be a better fit ? The Mac n cheese was very good , orecchiette pasta perfectly al dente in a rich sauce with thick bacon. I'd get that anytime. The dessert case held many options on this rainy weekday. But tops among them were the sandwich cookies, an oatmeal raisin one and also a choc chip. The choc chip won out mainly based on size, this thing was huge. But the scones looked great too. There was also a fancier pastry like choc cake, donuts, cake pops and a few other things. Anyway, that big cookie weighed in at 13.5 ozs, it barely fit inside the clamshell. It turned out to be about 3 servings, dense and tasty choc chip cookie dough with a dark chocolate ganache cream. Definitely a must get. Also available are their house baked breads, I almost bought the cranberry pecan but will use that as an excuse to return. There are also some jarred and bottled offerings from local purveyors that looked interesting. The inside of this ex deli is very cute and casual, and smelled amazing walking into. Onions, mushrooms and thyme hit me like a waft of a country French kitchen. There were 2 employees at the front of house while the chef/owner was behind them in the exposed kitchen cooking like a maniac. They were both helpful and friendly. I'm looking forward to timing my next visit so I can eat in and sample the dinner items. But I'd be just as happy with a brunch visit too, the breakfast items sound yummy. I planned on visiting this restaurant because it was a locally owned place and the reviews seem to be very good. Upon entering the restaurant, I gave them my name as I had reservations. Unfortunately, they did not have my name on the list which I found very disconcerting, however, they seated my party shortly. We were still waiting for the fourth member of our party, but ordered drinks. I ordered a coffee which was presented in a huge mug, greatly appreciated. When the fourth member of our party showed up, she ordered a coffee as well. However, it took her a good, 20 minutes to get her coffee. Upon ordering, I ordered the eggs Benedict and they said they were out of ham. They told me I could substitute for the ham, so I decided on pastrami. Other orders were chicken and waffles and pancakes with fruit on top. The eggs Benedict came out with sauerkraut included, which was very surprising. Not a big fan of sauerkraut with eggs and hollandaise sauce, but I must admit that hollandaise sauce was spot on. The pastrami which was on the bottom of the eggs Benedict tasted like brisket, not pastrami. My friend said that the chicken and waffles were delicious and the other party who ordered the pancakes, said they were bulky, and that the whip cream topping was more of a soup topping. The wait time, for the items was longer than I would have liked. And no coffee refills were offered at all. Needless to say, service is not that great. Hands down the best food in Bordentown city. The breakfast/brunch is phenomenal, and the seasonal dinner menu never fails to impress. The service is also incredibly attentive and the decore is really cute too. We have been eating at HoopHouse with generally good results but today's lunch was truly awful. We ordered chicken with waffles and a farmhouse chicken sandwich both of which we ordered before. My chicken was burned black and my husband's was over cooked and inedible but he never returns food no matter what. When I returned my food and got a replacement,the waiter said he wouldn't charge me for the burned chicken (!) then he explained after I showed him my husband's plate which looked like dog food, he said, "Sometimes our frier runs hot, which is no excuse. We also waited 15 minutes for our beverages and he apologized saying he "got involved in a conversation", which had been obvious to us. Sadly, we won't be back. It's right in the middle of downtown Bordentown if you wanted a bite while you walk around. I ordered The Jeffrey, a yummy vegetarian sandwich with grilled veggies, hummus, and avocado. I loved it all, including the fries, but the homemade BBQ sauce on the sandwich really sealed the deal. My husband and I like to try new restaurants in our neighborhood and this time we visited the HoopHouse in Bordentown City. It's such a cute restaurant and concept and very homie. By far the best food in the Bordentown area. Inventive dishes with high quality ingredients. So happy they are now serving dinner on Friday and Saturday. The crispy potato with truffle cheese and persian herb fritatta appetizers were great. The entrees, whole branzino stuffed with preserved lemon orzo and the sea shandy (scallops, shrimp and crispy fish served with drawn butter and a delicious homemade fruit mostarda) were to die for! Even the salads, which at so many restaurants are boring afterthought, are exciting and flavorful. It's obvious that a lot of thought (and love) goes into Chef Christine's menu. Pricrs are extremely reasonable for the quality and portions. It's so nice to have a fine food alternative to the same old, same old burger and pasta places that swamp this area read more

We won't be returning to this place. Service was the worst we have had in a good long while. For starters, the makeshift tabletops were not connected to the base, as we learned when we pulled the table closer to our chairs. Okay, so lot's of places have wobbly tables. Next, we weren't sure if the server would come to us so we got up to ask. She informed us no, she'd wait on us. She forgot 2 drinks and sugar so we had to get up to ask for them. Worse of all was the burned avocado toast. My breakfast burrito was okay but a little small and overpriced. My companion didn't want to complain but she didn't like the added pesto on the toast and there was only 1 piece of toast instead of the usual serving of 2. I called over the server, since she didn't bother to ask us how our food was, and she gave an excuse that the toast comes precooked and there wasn't anything that would keep the toast from being served burnt. I asked her to go ask the cook and thought, 'maybe I'd expect a burnt dish if I cooked this at home.' She never did and never came back. We had to get up to pay the check and inquired why she hadn't gotten us another avocado toast and she proceeded to repeat the same story. I never saw her go into the kitchen after our request but if she had and the cook chose not to remake the dish, then shame on them. What I did see was another staff eating her lunch behind the counter and socializing. This was not the most pleasant and delicious breakfast that it has been rated to be on Yelp. read more

There is a real hidden gem right in Bordentown that most people likely do not know about! It is the HoopHouse on Farnesworth Ave! The executive chef and owner, Christine Wendland, has appeared on both Chopped (and won) and Supermarket Stakeout (2nd place..although she should have won), you don't land on those cooking shows without exceptional talent. Her food is amazing and her Korean wings are better then most wing places who claim to do wings right. The Nashville hot chicken tenders are unbelievable. In fact, everything we tried was nothing short of spectacular. Chef Christine is also a gifted baker, making homemade baked goods that will leave you wanting more. HoopHouse is a great reuse of what Bordentonians will long remember as the Farnsworth deli. Subsequent tenants have not faired well but hopefully HoopHouse is here for good. Had lunch here and was amazed at the menu and how much they bake onsite. They make their own bread and treats like brownies, cookies, scopes, pudding, and so on. So rare to find a cafe style place that makes so much from scratch. I had a salad which was perfectly prepped and made with fresh local veggies. My dad had the Bahn Mi and loved it. Portions sizes are large. We also had fries for takeout and they wait to drop them in the frier until the end so they're not a soggy mess like most take out places give you. I'll try keep this one short. Avocado Toast is just that. Avocado on TOAST!!!! not barely heated bread. Its literally impossible to mess this dish up. Was told egg on top would be runny in center and crispy edges. It was neither. Called over waiter who took dish back to chef / owner who came barreling out with an attitude looking for a fight. Wanted to charge me 1/2 price for not eating her mess of the dish. She says it's how they do it. So I said then dont call it a toast!I did not engage from there on out. A good chef would have apologized , remade it correctly end of story. Not argue with the customer. Totally unacceptable behavior. Btw. Apparently the bread that was baked that day was also going out the following day to farmers market. I sure hope they label it as day old bread for those buyers. I doubt it but who knows. read more

Reviews looked good so we thought we would try this place today for a late breakfast. Ordered coffee even tho it was a very dark roast (thanks for showing that on the menu!). Not to our taste; but, hey, a lot of people love it. My husband ordered the biscuits and gravy. This is NOT the typical biscuits and gravy. It was served in a large bowl. The gravy was actually the consistency of a sauce and LOADED WITH SALT. It was so salty that it tasted more like a brine sauce. The sausage was crumbled over the top of the "gravy". The "biscuits " were not your typical biscuit either. They tasted crunchy. They looked like they had been made in a loaf pan and then sliced into 1 inch thick "biscuits". This dish was so salty that my husband only ate the eggs that he had ordered extra. Now, we are all for new and inventive ways of preparing food. However, this one really missed the mark. I ordered the strawberry French toast. The bread was about 2" thick and the center was slightly custard; which I like. Very nice touch! The strawberries had been slightly heated to make their own sauce. The whipped cream was a nice addition; but was mostly melted by the time it got to our table. I wouldn't order this again. The good news...when we told our server that the gravy was extremely salty she offered to take it off our bill. We declined as my husband had eaten all the eggs and a bit of one biscuit. We've found our new favorite spot. No, it's not on restaurant row but it's two blocks up and well worth it. We are BLESSED to be alive at the same time as Chef Christine. I'm so used to eating food that's more processed chemical than ingredient but this is so real, rustic, and authentic that the flavors just burst forward. Above and beyond that, it's just made with such love. Go on Sundays for half priced bread and if some of Chef Christine's award-winning banana pudding happens to be for sale, you smile and order two. read more
