We went for our first time and won't go back again. In looking at the menu online they list many good sounding options but many of these things are only available in the bar. You can only eat in the dining room if you order off of the grill your own meal menu. At first the aspect of grilling your own food looked fun but there were no instructions or suggestions provided by the staff. While we have grilled salmon before it would have been nice to know what area of the grill to stand around for optimal heating. Seasonings should have been labeled and clearly marked instead of having to try them by sprinkling into our hands before applying to the meat. This place has to have so many health code violations for the shared butter spreaders and utensils. While we spent way longer to cook our meat due to playing around with placement on the gill, our son was served and ate the majority of a very undercooked child's meal cheeseburger. Hoping none of us get sick, if we do, we'll know exactly why. The staff seemed stressed and unfriendly, taking a long time to fulfill basic requests-despite having time to stand around at the hostess station. While the main areas of the restaurant were clean, the grill was not. I wish we would have gone back to the bar to order food instead, maybe they keep their kitchen food prep area cleaner. read more

Salad came with two slices of onion and 1 cherry tomato well after trying the fish. My blue gills were over cooked and tasted old and chewy. My husband's walleye pretty small pieces. His steak fries under cooked. Some one else at our table had the cod tasted old and like it had been in the freezer too long. No water was offered. All drinks come in a canning jar. So the breakfast was just ok. I really was not excited to go here because they basically have 2 options. I wish they would expand if more. And other than the eggs and bacon you could definitely tell all the food was leftovers from the past few days. I like that they don't want to waste food. But everything just seemed dry. We liked the virgin Bloody Mary with the beef stick, cheddar, and pickle. It was seasoned perfectly and had a little bite to it. The onion rings were nice and crispy and delicious. The view of the Wisconsin River at the back was gorgeous. There is a juke box that we all enjoyed and pool tables and cool decor like the canoe and boat table and hanging moose. We drove up to Hooker's Resort for the All You Can Eat Fish Fry from Madison Friday night. It was so worth the drive. Hooker's is a grill your own steak house. In addition to huge steaks, they have fish and chicken. It is grill your own, so if you want someone to grill it for you, this is not the place for you. There's a large variety of seasonings and you can grill your own garlic bread too. (As much as you like.) On Friday, the have 'all you can eat fish fry'. Your choices are cod, frog legs, or clams. Order one of them and after that they will keep bringing you baskets of all three until you are full. It's served with baked potato or french fries. The french fries were just how I like them, crunchy, crispy, thin, lots of flavor, and not too much potato. They also include a hot, flaky bread-stick. The frog-legs were great, lightly battered, tender, good flavor. The clams and cod are prepared the same. If you prefer baked or broiled this is not the place for you. Everything is grilled by you or fried. There are a few side dishes on the menu (shrimp, crab-legs, sauteed mushrooms and onion) and a couple of dessert options. The prices, including the drink prices, were exceedingly reasonable. I really enjoyed Hooker's Resort. The atmosphere is very much Wisconsin Supper Club. It was a great place for a fish fry and I look forward to going back. read more

Their burgers are creative, including a pizza burger, a Squealer, topped with ham and bacon, and even the Eye Opener, topped with a fried egg. But the best deal at Hooker's is the Sunday Morning Eye Opener breakfast--scrambled eggs, steak tips, fried potatoes and onions with bacon and garlic toast for just $8.95--including a great Bloody Mary! They also have a "grill it yourself" steak restaurant, but I just don't see the point of that so I've never been. Hooker's also boasts a small dock for boating up--and also a nice fishing spot! Grill you own steak! Getting ready for sons wedding, they rented a alpine type chalet on the Wisconsin River. Just before you turn onto Parkway Drive is Hookers Resort (not the type your might be thinking) :). A landing and launching spot, a restaurant I noticed a sign for fish fries at this location. The following day, I drove back to Waunakee to pick up my wife to bring her to the cabin where the ceremony was to be held. I was telling her about the fish fry plates they had posted. So we stopped in. Quite large place some outdoor seating facing the river and s bar area. The dining room consist of waitress service and grill your own steaks. The dining room was not yet open (at 5:00pm). So went went into the bar area where there was pool table, tables and of course the bar. We were greeted by Michelle (a owner) who nicely welcomed us and served us. We started out with a beer and then placed our order for walleye fish plates. We chatted with Michelle while our food was being prepared regarding the area, their business and our travels. Very nice conversationist Michelle was and so hospitable. Our food arrived fairly quick. Their was an abundance of french fries and fish. All of it was very tasty and fresh, oh yes the beer was cold.. If your a native Wisconsinite or from Wisconsin or you like fish with pleasant owners, Hookers is a very nice local stop. Poor service- so unfriendly from host to waitress. The strange inconvenienced looks from staff was the strangest. Fish fry was poor with thin walleye which made for a super greasy flavor. The potato au gratin was cold! And then sent back and still came back cold with one hot spot. Really needs to improve. read more

I'm not from the area but I've been working in the Madison area for 6 months and drive by here every day and finally got a chance to go. It doesn't look like much but the food was delicious. We used to go there often. This happens a lot on Tuesday. Rude bartender and was told we can't order 2 drinks at a time, she is always very busy, so just wanted to get my 2 drinks in before 5 o'clock and this is at 4 o'clock. Ordered drinks one time at 20 minutes to 5 and she did not get them to us until after 5, we were told they will be full price now lol. I used to come here a few times a year when I lived in Columbia County. The grill-your-own-steak concept seems like something that should really fall flat, but with the right group of people it is actually a lot of fun. Really, the main excuse to splurge (and when I say splurge, I mean that in a very conservative sense of the word; really, their steaks are priced very reasonably) is their birthday deal. They'll give you a free steak if you show your ID, a damn good deal. You can walk out of there for under $5 feeling like a king--more if you're drinking. Average cost of the plate when it's not your birthday is $20 to $30, depending on what you're drinking. Other people's complaints about the gas being turned way down are legitimate. It always seems like it takes a very long time for me to cook my steak here. This doesn't actually bother me a whole lot because it gives me a chance to chat with friends and drink my drink. Really, half the point of coming here for a steak is to hang out at the grill. You can always make garlic bread while you wait, but I've always felt like the brushes--which people use on raw meat, cooked meat, bread, and butter--are kinda by their nature sorta unsanitary. I just sorta hope that the flames kill any nasty germs--I'm no germophobe. With your steak, you get a salad and a baked potato. They are both generally decent. The friday night fish fry is also very good. It's all you can eat on most kinds of fish, but you probably won't be able to eat more than one or two plates worth of fish because they give you quite a bit. The flavor of the fish is great--lightly breaded and flaky, without being too oily or greasy. I'd say it's one of the better fish fries in Columbia County. I have been involved in one bad experience here, though. Awhile back my sister-in-law had a birthday party here; she made a reservation for a large group, I want to say 14 or 15 people but I honestly don't remember how many there were. When we arrived they told us it would be a bit of a wait while people cleared out and they pushed tables together. They never actually did that; as long as people in our party were ordering from the bar, they kept seating the walk-ins and never actually delivered on the table they promised our group. Clearly, they were trying to pad their pockets with drink orders and keep us there as long as possible, quality of our night be damned.. Our group ended up leaving without eating about two hours after we were supposed to be seated. I'm sorry, but that's just unacceptable. I get that a party that big is disruptive to a restaurant, but if they couldn't or wouldn't do it they should have never taken the reservation. Taking it and then not delivering on it is very unprofessional. I have been in smaller (but large-ish, around 8 people) groups where this hasn't been an issue, though. So therefore, I'd say the following: Hooker's is great for an intimate night out with a small group, but I've been turned off by the experience with a larger group. I have extreme opinions on Hookers: what I like, I'm very impressed by; what I believe they do poorly is the result of what I perceive to be serious issues. Therefore, I give them a 3/5 with the caveat that it doesn't mean it's a "meh" experience, but rather that it'll be very good or very bad depending on the night you're trying to have. read more

I've been here a handful of times and it was okay, but this place is terrible now. It's a grill your own food place, but I don't go out to dinner to cook for myself. On Fridays they have fish fry. Don't come here expecting baked or broiled, everything is deep fried. Hope you can remember everything because they don't have menus. The meal starts with warm, stale bread sticks. The French dressing for the salad is fluorescent red. The corn that came with the meal was soggy, wet, and obviously frozen. In Wisconsin in the summer, there is no excuse for using frozen over fresh corn. French fries were limp, soggy, and undercooked. Bluegill and walleye were good, but nothing special. After I ate, I found out that there were several side dishes that I would have liked to had with meal. Too bad I couldn't read about them because this restaurant doesn't have menus. read more

Wow. So at first, you think it is a cute little restaurant. The fun idea of grilling your own steak is ruined when the coals are terrible. It took us nearly 20 minutes to wait for an open spot on the small fire. After our waitress assured that she would not serve the rest of the table until we were ready, she then served them 15 minutes before we were ready. Jessica never checked on us, unless of course you count shouting at us as she walked by. I had no napkin and could never ask her for another one. We spent nearly $80 there that night and I feel completely ripped off. The meal was great but the service was terrible. I never received a refill on my water. I'd really like to give this review a higher mark. I cannot. On concept, location, and quality for the money, Hooker's is on point. The grill your own thing is cool if you like to DIY, and I have no complaints as to the quality or quantity of the food and bev aspects. Steaks and drinks are generous. The fact of the matter is, they try to save a buck or two by not fueling the grill properly. They simply don't put enough fire under the grill. If you follow the tried-and-true four minutes per side rule, prepare to adjust your calendar. One of our party made a point of this to staff, and was met with nothing but a set of rolled eyes, like she hears this all too often. We even saw someone pour some of the melted butter on the fire trying to get some heat! Very telling. We were a party of eleven, and were told to get our orders going because a party of 40 (yeah, FORTY) was en route. As we were eating, casual observations saw folks standing at the grill for 30+ minutes. Let it be known that I like grilled garlic bread* as much as the next guy, but sheesh! Half-an-hour? Really? Hookers is a family run restaurant/bar. It is clean food is good. If we could afford to eat here every week we would. The grill your own steaks is great. Friday fish fry is very tasty only down fall is we would have liked more fish. For the area it is hard to find all you can eat fish fry I think this would be good idea. Drinks are tasty. The view is beautiful durring the day & at sun set. They have a lot going on here at Hookers. Needs some kick ass desserts! read more

Went there for a free birthday dinner. We had the t bones. We got to grill them to perfection. The salad was fresh and baked potatoe was perfectly baked and huge. Gave this place a try recently and truly enjoyed it. Service was attentive and friendly, steaks were very good, and I think the dinner is a great deal. In the city you pay upwards of $35 to $40 just for steak with no sides! All of the cuts in the cooler looked fabulous but we stuck with ribeye. I had read the reviews and issues with coals before going in. There must be some truth to this as even the bartender told us to get there early. We arrived right after opening and had the grill almost to ourselves. As the night wore on the grill did get very crowded. This is a small restaurant and small grill so I can see how coals would be an issue. There are a variety of seasonings by the grill but no labels, so you have to taste test. Baked potatoes and bread for grilling are also provided. You help yourself to butter and sour cream. For people who don't like red meat, there was also chicken, salmon and Mahi available. Iceberg lettuce salad is provided at your table. We also ordered a side of mushrooms that we're delicious. We ordered 1/2lb crab legs too but I can't recommend those. If we lived in this area we would go back. Great deal, nice views of the river. The only thing I would change is adding some background music to dining room. We did visit for their Sunday morning eye opener breakfast, served 930 til they run out. Great deal at under $10.00 (includes great bloody Mary!) You get steak tips, scrambled eggs, potatoes, onions, bread and bacon or sausage. Loved it! It gets packed for breakfast though so get there early. read more

Wow. We've been to Hookers several time over the years and this was a real disappointing visit. Sunny spring day, everyone was in a good mood except the people working there. I had the bluegill basket, it was ok. She had the walleye basket, it was ok. Our guest each had the "Special" - not only have the sandwiches gotten smaller but the steak was tough and overall poor. We've always enjoyed good "bar" food in the past at Hookers but this food was pretty "run of the mill" out of bag or box offering if you ask me. Moving on to service, or the lack there of...in fairness to our original bartender/server - she was simply overwhelmed when we arrived. Once she did get to us, 10 -15 minutes after we sat down at the bar - she offered to buy our first round and offered happy hour pricing since we arrived prior to 5:00pm. As her shift ended at 5:00-5:30 and the next bartender took over, those offers apparently weren't communicated. Overall, just a poor experience and for over $100, I think there are better choices in the area. Disappointed. read more

Excellent Bloody Mary's. The bar food is typical Wisconsin bar fare which means it pretty good. The bar tenders are attentive. The restaurant is grill your own which is fun. Beautiful views of the Wisconsin River. Friday Night Fish Fry is beyond horrible plus they don't have cole slaw which is a fatal mistake for any fish fry. The fish was inedible and the corn on the cob had been boiled to death. So aside from avoiding the fish fry at all costs I would recommend this place. read more

We drove 40+minutes to get to this place, it was my brothers birthday. We were unaware of the grill your own food aspect. The whole idea is pretty weird for us, but my father liked it. The other people whom were there, the locals, were happy. My biggest problem with this restaurant was that you had to make your whole way to the restroom to wash your hands. Horrible concept when you have people who touch the tongs after handing their meat, then people whom have to go up there multiple times to check on their food and use the same tongs. My fiancé got the salmon. We were told he needed to use the basket to cook it, the basket had a hole on one side. I don't know if they are cheap with the cooking tools or that's how it's supposed to be. There was no one to get advice from, no labels on the spices and no thermometers to check the meat. Our server came to us maybe twice throughout dinner, probably because we make the food ourselves. We wanted more drinks, but we couldn't get any, another downfall. I get that you'll make more money if we order the make your own steaks and chickens than the bar menu. But I was very VERY angry with the fact that the extensive bar menu with burgers, prime rib and such wasn't available in the restaurant even though it's the same place. Oh! And the grill where you grill is a mess, there was someone who came to pick up plates and such. During our two hours or so there I saw her grab plates twice off the grill area. I never saw her wipe down the grill area of the juice from the meat. Very unappetizing We also ran out of bread near the "end" of the meal. My fiancé had to cook his salmon for a while. By the time he was done most people were finished so we nibbled on bread while he finished. But we ran out of bread. Like it was out for a while. We asked about dessert and the server was almost annoyed that we wanted to stay longer. She tried to rush us into ordering. I get that most places rush ordering dessert so I'm not going to factor that into a rating. Just some constructive criticism. I would recommend eating on the bar menu, it sounded good. This is a typical bar along a river in Wisconsin. They do have a nice dining room and looks like a place to cook steak over a wood fire. I haven't eaten there yet. I would normally give it a 3. They get an extra star because the beef in the burger that I enjoyed in the bar was excellent. Turns out that they grind their own hamburger. It is what a hamburger should be. This is a typical bar with the exception of the slow and angry seeming bar tender. If you can see past that, it is a great stop for lunch! read more

We ended up getting terribly ill after this with the same bug. All happening at the same time and having one thing in common. The Bloody Mary. Then I called just to notify the staff and was talked down to. I told him I just wanted to let them know in case of any other occurrences so they were aware. He then hung up on me.
