This is an odd four star review after reading it thoroughly but the staff was very nice, polite, and accommodating after a few mishaps. The sushi was great. The wrong plate of sushi came to the table at first. An on-the-rocks pour should not be one ounce over ice. I made sure to emphasize a "rocks" pour the next time and informed them they can charge it as a double if they do not have a rocks pour within their system. They most definitely picked up on the hint and made up for the first drink although it was lacking enough ice. So, glad to see there is a sharp learning curve. The open kitchen concept was one of my favorite features. I like the bar being in the middle of the restaurant. Makes the place feel lively. Although not sure about having a DJ with the branding that they are going for. It's hard to pinpoint the image they want with all that's going on. Love the wine lockers available for an annual rental membership. Keeping in mind that the place is new. We'll definitely go back for another attempt. read more

What a fabulous lunch we had today at Hook restaurant!! We began with craft cocktails. I had a Stoli Dollee, which was pineapple infused vodka. It was sweet, and was amazingly smooth. Then we went onto appetizers. One of them was crab cakes- I don't think they used any bread crumbs. It was just chunks of luscious, tender crab. Amazing!! I'll go back just for them.! we also had a very spicy, spicy mussle dish. I didn't try it because I don't do mussels, but the people I was with absolutely loved it. They we then went on to have Fruiti De Mare- squid pasta with scallops, shrimp, mussels,- it was amazing. A second entree was scallops which were huge and very tender. The last entree is the whole grilled Branzino fish with a balsamic glaze on top of fingerling potatoes. Amazing. Dessert was Keylime pie and donut bread pudding. What a meal! We will be back, and I highly recommend this place PS. We have the most amazing waitress!! so pleasant and friendly, and very informed about every aspect of our meal read more

This is a couple weeks delayed as I have tried calling the manager twice without a call back to see if this could have been dealt with without a review....but alas here I am. I went there for dinner a few sundays ago. There were approx 12 people in our group. Our waitress was very short with us, gave us attitude about asking for simple things like silverware and a water refill. It did look like they were short staffed and she may have been one or two servers working the entire outdoor area. However, she had to walk past our table to go in and out of the restaurant so it's not like she couldn't see what we were missing. Coming from someone who used to serve, this was disappointing. Then we were hit with the bill with an "automatic 25% tip" on it. Now it made sense why she didn't care about our table, she was getting a large tip no matter what. Myself and a few others used to work in the restaurant industry and none of us have ever seen an automatic 25% applied to parties....the standard seems to normally be around 18%. We asked the hostess if we could talk to the manager and they initially said "you could fill out a complaint card." And then when we asked again they replied with "she is with someone else right now" and just looked us right in the eye. There was no offer to go get her or ask if we wanted to wait until she was done talking to whoever she was supposedly talking to. I've attempted to call twice to talk to the manager to talk about the terrible service and the ridiculous 25% automatic tip applied to parties and I have not received a call back. This is very poor business, and I am greatly disappointed. On top of that the food was very bad so overall I would not recommend coming here, especially if you have a party larger than eight because you'll have an automatic 25% tip applied and terrible service because the wait staff has nothing to lose as they are getting a very large tip regardless. read more

It's new, patience is key. My wife and I went to Hook for our anniversary dinner. I made a reservation. Upon arrival, you will probably have to valet your car. Valet is complimentary but the guys work on tips. The hostess saw the note about requesting a water view and happily honored it. So far so good. Unfortunately we visited on supposedly the last night with the limited menu. Our waitress was very kind and happy to work with us but you could tell the wait staff was still learning. The gluten-free options and knowledge of GF options was disappointing. There was a chance some of the sushi rice was mixed with a malt vinegar, but it was not clear to the server, and we figured rice-based vinegar was typical. The muscles, and shrimp appetizers were good. The sushi was good, and the wine/alcohol selection was ample. For the price of the restaurant, the value wasn't 100% there. One thing that bothered me was my martini glass having lipstick on it from the previous guest (noticed partially through but didn't bring it up). Also, the cutlery, and glassware need to be looked over before setting on the table. Lots of water marks that could easily be removed with a microfiber towel when quickly setting a table. Understand this is me being on the picky side because I expect more when spending this amount on a dinner. Make sure you understand it's new, and don't expect perfection. Service Suffers at Hook. After 10 minutes I had to ask the Bread Girl if we could get a Server. The Server was given specific instructions on how my wife would like Her cocktail prepared... it was wrong. I took it back to the Bartender and repeated the instructions. Ten minutes later it was once again prepared incorrectly. So the Manager wanders by after the 2nd drink was delivered, and offers to make it himself, which I assumed was a sincere effort to correct the problem. What I saw next was mind blowing. The Manager went back behind the Bar, then stood there with a Martini Class and a Shaker... at which time he literally began a ten-minute conversation with another customer. This was the most blatant display of Passive Aggressive behavior I have experienced in quite some time. So, waiting even longer now... it took approximately 45 minutes for the Wife to get a Cocktail, that still was not prepared correctly. If this seems like a lot of Fuss about nothing... be aware this is a $16 Drink. I don't have a problem paying, I knew what it cost when I ordered it... just make it correctly and in a timely fashion. Especially the 3rd time... how about showing some sense of urgency if you are sincere about satisfying your customer. Service is very slow every step of the experience. The few Servers they have can't keep up. Dinner was mediocre at best, the Seafood Bucatini Dish at $38.00 had a ton of pasta, but we had to search to find the Lobster Meat. So, two hours and $135.00 later... I won't be heading back anytime soon. I believe a lot of their issues are due to the challenges to hire and train staff. I'm a seafood lover so I really enjoy this place. You have the option to sit outdoors or indoors. The menus are different, the outdoor menu is limited compared to the indoor menu. I had the lobster roll as a appetizer which was great. Then I had a salmon bowl as my entree and not a day goes by that I do not think about that salad. (I substituted the arugula for romaine) The salmon was seasoned well and crispy. The salad was tossed in the perfect amount of dressing, just sooo good overall. I believe Bri was my server and she was very nice, cool, and happy to tell me her favorite items on the menu and that I could make substitutions to my liking. read more

I never write reviews but this one needs one. I don't even know what this place is doing and who they hire to make food and wait the food. We all should've walked out the minute we walked in as we heard people questioning the front of the house if their table is ready when they made a reservation and were 45 minutes past their reservation time, giving excuses and only offering "sorry your table isn't ready". Next up was our experience, and this was a dinner reservation we made to take my mom out for her birthday. First off, the glasses on the table were dirty, and if you look up we literally had spiderwebs right above our table and bugs along the window sill. So next, got seated at the reservation time however our order came after TWO HOURS of waiting. Our appetizers (sushi only) were completely messed up and we got a lot of wrong rolls. We heard the table behind us also complaining and at this point my 2 children were ready to jump out the restaurant window and so were the kids next to our table as well. After waiting over 2 hours and so many issues later we asked if our meal would get boxed up so we can just leave, well that took forever too. We didn't get to sing my mom happy birthday or get the chocolate cake we had ordered at the end of the meal and all we got in the end is some bill for nearly $300 and one sushi roll comped. This was absolutely ridiculous and being from the Grosse pointe area and dining at restaurants along the SCS nautical mile my whole life and now residing elsewhere I would never recommend this place to anyone unless you want a disastrous lunch or dinner with the most confused staff I've ever encountered. Side note: when we took our son out for a walk outside of the restaurant for a little break, there were chefs or kitchen employees smoking cigarettes against garbage dumpsters and surrounded by garbage, it was disgusting to think they were preparing/handling our food. read more

Went to hear a band on a Friday. We sat on the covered patio area, not the open patio because it was raining. Food was good, have been waiting a long time to try chef Nehra's cuisine, it was "good". Staff was obviously not trained yet, have a long way to go although they did knock themselves out finding us a table indoors. Service was hit or miss. I doubt I'd go there for "fine dining" because it looks like it wants to be all things to all people and that stretch of Jefferson near the marinas has had the same clientele for the last 40 years. But to see a place fire someone when a Bartender gets out of line and a manager backs him up... We won't be back when we come to Michigan and we will let our Michigan business partners know not to set our dinners up there. Sorry Hook you need to train your Managers and show them how to be diplomatic and use some discretion. If I was her I would see you in court, if I knew her name I'd offer our lawyers services free. We have been here a few times but today was the worst. It was my birthday (I don't put this on our server, she was alone outside) it took over 1 1/2 hours to get our food. They didn't have the ingredients for what my son ordered. My husband got the lobster roll that was tiny and basically no lobster. We went for dinner based on us loving to watch chef Bobby on Sundays. Plus my husband met him at Luigi and loved him. We were not impressed. We sat outside in bar area. The place was filthy in disarray our table was wiped down when we were sat. Service....15 minutes later before we got water. It took about 25 min for sushi. No silverware and soy sauce for about 10 minutes. Fish was great. The service and cleanliness is what will keep me away. I think there needs to be a new GM. This is a very different review than I've ever posted... We had a death in the family and the original place we booked was limited to 55 guests. Unfortunately, we realized we were definitely over 55 and started looking for a new venue for the funeral luncheon. A local priest recommended Encore who (thankfully!) recommended Hook. Hook took us in with minimal advance planning which is fairly amazing considering we planned at least 70 people. Hook said "No problem!" And worked closely with us, during Lent, to create a perfect menu at a very affordable price. The venue was gorgeous; the bartenders were fantastic; the Chef (Bobby) made a personal appearance to greet all the guests and when he noticed my niece didn't have a plate he inquired, found out she is vegan, and created a special dish for her on the spot. Wow. Wow! Our view was over the marina and into Lake St. Clare - a beautiful vista anytime of year. Service was above and beyond, and everyone extended their heartfelt condolences Perfect for a large group or an intimate date night out - try Hook, and be rest assured it's well worth it! read more

Great improvement from when the restaurant first opened! The Maine lobster shrimp pasta with lobster cream sauce was delicious and big enough to share. There were 8 large shrimp and about a half pound of lobster meat. Definitely worth the $36. We sat at the bar for dinner by choice. The bartenders were quick to acknowledge us, serve our drinks and very friendly. Chef Bobby was there. He took the time to chat with us, came back after our meal and asked for feedback. Impressive. We walked in and the hostess greeted us and immediately seated us. I recommend sitting at the chefs table, watching how hard everyone in the open kitchen works to craft delicious food made the meal even better. All of the food was very good and HOT when it came out. You have to order the donut bread pudding for dessert. I think the best part of our dinner was our server(Hannah S), she was so friendly, attentive, and made great recommendations on what to order. The service at the bar was slow and no one greeted us right away. 30 minute into our wait we decided to order Blake's wings and the wings came out cold! We decided to leave at 2! The edamame and shrimp tempura roll was the worst I've ever had in my life. The edamame was so soggy and tasted like freezer burn. The shrimp roll- the rice was falling apart and batter was so hard. I had the branzino and could've been fine without it lol. The favorite was the corn. I would go back and just order the corn and enjoy the view. My friend and I finally made the 25 minute drive from Birmingham to SCS. It is not as far from Birmingham as it sounds. It was well worth the 25 minutes. We had delicious food. Berry Salad with mix greens, and Sicilian Chicken with Fettuccini Alfredo. It was excellent. It was so nice when we walked in to be greeted immediately greeted by the hostess. The ambiance was beautiful. We sat on the deck surrounded by Lake St Clair. The inside is beautiful with white table clothes. We had a great time. the service was outstanding. Exceeded our expectations. We tried the calamari and 2 rolls for appetizers, these were great. For dinner we had the sea bass special which was a solid A, the burger which was delicious and the nachos. I would pass on the nachos but everything else was just great. Food: Was excellent. Hot. Cooked perfectly. Tasty. Husband I were very pleased. Ambiance: Mediocre at best. The fish tank was filthy. A little warehouse-y. Loud. Maybe that little section at the front feels cozier. The hanging fish over the bar is the extent of the decor in the mostly black interior. It kind of battles between the very casual atmosphere and clientele with white table clothes and pretty wine glasses. Seems like an identity crisis. I was in a party of seven adults and went here to have a nice dinner. Service was extremely slow. When we ordered any drinks and it would take at least 25 min. before we received them. This happened every time we ordered another round. The food took at least a 40 min. for the entrees to arrive. One entree was missing and took at least another 20 minutes for it to show up. It was just a pizza. They took it off of the bill. Two people ordered the lamb chops med. rare. Both meals came well done. Two hours later a member of the party became extremely ill. The person had the salmon. The experience was memorable for all the wrong reasons. I, in good conscious, would never recommend this restaurant. First off website--on day of--and menu were completely different...,options and prices. Not good! Staff were attentive, but didn't bring any side plates and all we ordered were appetizers to share. Seafood tower....blah. $80 for 2, menu stated 2 king crab legs, we had one and were told because of its size?! Well, give us two smaller ones and use this for something else‍. Everything was just meh. Poke bowl was highlight...but no better than any other sushi place. Bone marrow with beef tips was NOT tenderloin as stated....also served well and very tough! Minimal meat & marrow....good flavor, but best thing was vegetables on this plate. Mussels were good....nothing original. Basically nothing was unique and so good we would have to go back for. The appetizer and bread they give you were good. The Davis salad was excellent. Pretty much that was it. The entree's not so much. My jumbo Scallops were drenched in oil. It wasn't good. The chicken dish our friend got was flavorless and the main knuckle claw with scallops wasn't very good. The pasta was not cooked enough. The dessert we got was donut bread pudding, the picture of it in the menu looked nothing like what we got. Plus it took forever! Disappointed in the food, especially since it wasn't cheap. The service is great! The food only so-so for the prices. Been there twice. Inside: first visit tried their sushi, friend had salad, both not out of this world, just okay. Second time: outside, tuna poke bowl and their specialty hamburger. The poke bowl for $17 was small, appetizer size, the presentation was nice but not enough to fill you, so ate my husband's french fries that was with his burger. Specialty burger was covered in so much brown sauce the burger was disgusting to hold and eat so didn't finish it. Martinis with 3 olives, the martini glasss were only 1/2 full so only one olive was actually in the martinis, the other two olives were old and dried up. $15 for that sad martini!!! Sunny outside but there was only two umbrellas that were functional, the rest were broken. Prices are ridiculous for a boating hangout bar. Missing Jack's. It saddens me to write this review but felt it was time to do so. Being a long time former customer of Jack's, which became Brownies for years, my wife and I have always enjoyed a great time, every time, being on the deck, either eating or having drinks while listening to some great music. That's all changed with HOOk...! We tried coming three time last year when they first took over and everything was different. It was a restaurant, an expensive restaurant with poor service and little to no energy on the deck. We were told the owner didn't want a boater crowd nor a bar crowd from several people had told us and was he firm on it. My question is: Why did he buy a bar on the water and not want a boater crowd or bar crowd?? Not too smart in my opinion.... LOL. The few times they had entertainment it was dinner music. All the fun of the gone..! Mandatory valet parking and a dress code took away from what the previous establishment use to be. Now, it's nothing more than an expensive restaurant on the water, that's it. We came again this year to give it another chance and it wasn't any different. In speaking to other friends of ours who frequented Brownies and Jacks in the past, they felt the same as we did. The best days of Brownie's is behind us. We hear the owner now wants to change things because business is not what he expected. I wonder why? In our opinion, it's too late. Once you lose your old Clientele it's very hard to get them back. Ask any business owner and they'll tell you the same. We've moved on and miss our days at Jacks & Brownies. read more
