    Mozzarella Sticks and French Fries
    Sarah B.

Summary for those who don't want to read the whole review: Everything I ordered was FRESH and cooked to PERFECTION. 100% recommendation, just go already! Review: I went in the "to go" side of Hook Fish and Chicken. I didn't know what I wanted and the employee was nice enough to show me the order screen on the wall. It's their cashless ordering system. I looked through and selected my order. I will say, there isn't any pictures on their ordering system for you to see what the items look like, BUT paired with their online menu... I was able to figure it out. I chose 5 wings (did 5 single wings) and mozzarella sticks with bbq sauce and ranch. All sauces are prepackaged and I thought they would add sauce to the wings after frying. They do not but you can order bbq sauce to dip your order in. I must've entered the wrong door because prior to me going, I looked up this restaurant and thought it had a dine-in option. Not a big deal as there's a little community garden right around the corner and I ate in the shade of the garden surrounded by plants. Now onto the food... the wings were COOKED TO PERFECTION! I have NEVER IN MY LIFE had better wings than this restaurants. And that's saying something because I definitely think myself something of a wing connoisseur. They had the PERFECT level of crunch on the outside to wet on the inside ratio, plus the seasoning that they used was some kind of dry rub that was just HEAVENLY. I almost didn't need the bbq! The mozzarella sticks were perfectly fried and had the right level of crunch and the fries were crunch on the outside but soft and amazing on the inside. 100% will go back to this location!

Catfish sandwich (the yellow stuff is the amazing earth shaking seasoning)

Wow. Straight up this place is special. No need to read any further... just go and order food from them now. Get the tenders. Get the catfish. Experience the euphoria that is The Seasoning. Even the sweet coleslaw. Do it now!! If you insist on having details, here you go... About a week ago I was driving into town for work and found this place on yelp. I had to try this place that people online were saying was the best fried chicken they ever had. In Pittsburgh though? So I stopped by... and 4 more stops later (all in less than 10 days)... I can confirm they have the some of the best chicken I've ever had. And yes in Pittsburgh!! I came for the tenders. But switched up when I saw the catfish on the menu. Ate the catfish. It was amazing. On par with and maybe even surpassing the best I've had in the Carolinas or Georgia or anywhere else on the east coast. Not trying to be sacrilegious - I have the utmost respect and love for southern cooking but this place here in Homestead, just outside downtown Pittsburgh, is the real. The big single catfish filet (for the sandwich) is nicely fried but still tender. Lightly crispy. Fresh and light/flaky inside. And the seasoning... transubstantiation in powder form (legal powder form!). All comes together perfectly. I ate it so quickly that I thought maybe I should try the tenders too. I bought 4 pieces thinking I'd eat one now and heat up the others in the hotel late night or the following day. I ate all four before I got to the car! :) With no sauce too!! I'm a huge sauce person and I didn't need a drop. It was that good. The chicken is expertly cooked with flavor all the way through the meat. It's so soft it almost falls apart. And the breading is crispy and flavorful. Some of their special seasoning seals the deal as the best tenders on Earth. The fries are excellent. The Seasoning works it's magic on this too. The coleslaw was sweet and chopped finely. Just the way I like it. The sides were delicious. Hope to try others next time. For to-go orders, they use a rubber band to keep the container closed. Not only is this a good solution to keep things tidy, it's nice to have to shoot at the family before we eat. :) Special note about the staff. I've met several over the last 4 trips here and they are all super friendly and nice. Fast too. The owner was great. Greeted me personally and had a nice chat with him. Good to hear about him and his dad running the place and single handedly getting the place ready for business. And they did a fantastic job. The restaurant itself is deceptively spacious and both the seating area and the restrooms are super clean (as a neat freak, this is important to me). I think there are other locations... but THIS is the one to go to. Food + value + friendly staff = you can not miss! There's even an Aldi parking lot across the street you can easily park in. Overall, a purely wonderful experience. Give it 6 stars if I could. P.S. The only thing I found strange was the light sensor in the bathroom (it's a large single person bathroom) seems to be a little far from the toilet... so while using it, the lights can go off (since the sensor thinks there's no one in the room). Nothing a wave of the arm can't fix. But it's is a little jarring the first time. (So.... Why are you still reading this? Go order now!)

We were visiting from California and were excited to eat here, so we had a few questions about the menu. The Black female employee who helped us was very short and rude when answering our questions, making us feel like we were inconveniencing her simply for asking. To make matters worse, the cups we were given were dirty. When we politely asked for the tab because we no longer felt comfortable staying, she responded by saying, "It's cool, you all can just leave." That level of customer service was shocking. Earlier, she had also rudely asked our group if we could move to another area of the restaurant because they had a large party coming in. We were happy to accommodate the request, but the way it was communicated came across as dismissive and disrespectful. I understand everyone has difficult days, and I always try to give people grace. Throughout the entire interaction, our group remained polite and respectful. We simply wanted to enjoy a good meal while visiting from out of town. I'm genuinely disappointed because we went out of our way to come here based on its reputation, only to leave feeling unwelcome. I hope management addresses both the cleanliness issues and the level of customer service, because no guest should be treated this way.

The food is a bit better than standard bar food. I ordered a fried chicken salad. The iceberg lettuce (ugh) was accompanied by a handful of cucumber slices, banana pepper rings, red onion, some cheese, and what I think was boneless, sliced chicken fingers. I opted against having fries in my salad. I also picked off the handful of cherry tomatoes. The dressing - balsamic vinaigrette- was good. The steak sandwich as well as the caprese sandwich are some pretty stellar options. The steak sandwich has a really flavorful and unexpected corn pico. Here for it. Caprese in any form is a plus for me. I like that the sandwich includes red onion and a really tasty sun-dried tomato pesto. Venture over to Homestead for this spot. You'll be happy you did.

It's a bit confusing at first - you don't enter from the "front" of the house; rather, you head around to the back, just off the small parking lot under the balcony. You enter directly into the lovely stone walled bar area that has a decent number of dining tables. There's an upstairs that looks quite different. We - far & away - preferred the downstairs. Much better ambiance. The place was already humming at 5pm! We took the last open table (we had a reservation). Our server came to the table pretty quickly to welcome us, put down menus, and let us know that their draft beer system was on the fritz (what?!) - had been since the day prior. Ack! But they had a really good brown ale in cans from nearby Hazel Grove Brewing, which we had been wanting to try anyway. We ordered our meal pretty soon after, as the place got even busier. But that's when things got a bit harrier. The wait staff got more & more overwhelmed, and the kitchen was overwhelmed, too, clearly as it took 40+ mins for our appetizer to come. But it was good. The goat cheese toast w/ yummy homemade tomato jam. The sliced French bread it was on could've been toasted more - for sure - but the flavors all played really well together. Another 40 mins later, we got our meals, which was fine - we were enjoying each others' company. But we couldn't get our waters refilled to save our lives, & it took forever to get another round of beers. People at other tables were getting restless waiting, too. Three of the 4 of us ordered fish & chips for dinner. The fish was huge - beer battered haddock. The tartar sauce - homemade- was mild and flavorful. The hand cut fries were good, but my sisters-in-law substituted with sweet potato fries - and those were *really* good. My hubs got the bangers & mash which he said "wasn't bad." The peas were fresh and good, and he really liked the mashed potatoes, but sausage was just "meh," he said. No one came to clear our table as people finished their dishes. The 1st beer glasses sat on the table, as did our appetizer dish. As a group, we ordered bread pudding to share for dessert. To my shock, the server was actually going to cram it onto our table with ALL the dirty dinner/appetizer dishes still there! I said, "No no. We need to have these taken away." We started stacking dishes for him to remove. I mean, yuck! We were trying to give the guy the benefit of the doubt on some of the other stuff - he was totally crushed under an avalanche of customers - but that was a bridge too far. As for the dessert - it was a huge serving with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream & a swirl of caramel on top. I thought it was a bit like eating a good apple pie, but my fam wasn't impressed at all (they all love bread pudding). One sis-in-law said it was way too firm and just seemed like the ingredients had been buzzed up and mashed together. BUT --- it was a good night, and we'll be back. I think we would opt for a week night, instead. Hopefully, it will be a bit less busy. And definitely, we want to try the patio. It looks really quaint with all the white twinkle lights. The parking situation is a bit tough for anyone with special needs. One sis got the one (I think) handicap spot near the door (the other small handful of spots were taken); the other sis had to park up a rather steep hill (she waited while we retrieved her car for her when we were done). There's a decent amount of street parking, but I don't know what that situation is like if you come after 5p/530p.
