    Mozzarella Sticks and French Fries
    Sarah B.

Summary for those who don't want to read the whole review: Everything I ordered was FRESH and cooked to PERFECTION. 100% recommendation, just go already! Review: I went in the "to go" side of Hook Fish and Chicken. I didn't know what I wanted and the employee was nice enough to show me the order screen on the wall. It's their cashless ordering system. I looked through and selected my order. I will say, there isn't any pictures on their ordering system for you to see what the items look like, BUT paired with their online menu... I was able to figure it out. I chose 5 wings (did 5 single wings) and mozzarella sticks with bbq sauce and ranch. All sauces are prepackaged and I thought they would add sauce to the wings after frying. They do not but you can order bbq sauce to dip your order in. I must've entered the wrong door because prior to me going, I looked up this restaurant and thought it had a dine-in option. Not a big deal as there's a little community garden right around the corner and I ate in the shade of the garden surrounded by plants. Now onto the food... the wings were COOKED TO PERFECTION! I have NEVER IN MY LIFE had better wings than this restaurants. And that's saying something because I definitely think myself something of a wing connoisseur. They had the PERFECT level of crunch on the outside to wet on the inside ratio, plus the seasoning that they used was some kind of dry rub that was just HEAVENLY. I almost didn't need the bbq! The mozzarella sticks were perfectly fried and had the right level of crunch and the fries were crunch on the outside but soft and amazing on the inside. 100% will go back to this location!

Catfish sandwich (the yellow stuff is the amazing earth shaking seasoning)

Wow. Straight up this place is special. No need to read any further... just go and order food from them now. Get the tenders. Get the catfish. Experience the euphoria that is The Seasoning. Even the sweet coleslaw. Do it now!! If you insist on having details, here you go... About a week ago I was driving into town for work and found this place on yelp. I had to try this place that people online were saying was the best fried chicken they ever had. In Pittsburgh though? So I stopped by... and 4 more stops later (all in less than 10 days)... I can confirm they have the some of the best chicken I've ever had. And yes in Pittsburgh!! I came for the tenders. But switched up when I saw the catfish on the menu. Ate the catfish. It was amazing. On par with and maybe even surpassing the best I've had in the Carolinas or Georgia or anywhere else on the east coast. Not trying to be sacrilegious - I have the utmost respect and love for southern cooking but this place here in Homestead, just outside downtown Pittsburgh, is the real. The big single catfish filet (for the sandwich) is nicely fried but still tender. Lightly crispy. Fresh and light/flaky inside. And the seasoning... transubstantiation in powder form (legal powder form!). All comes together perfectly. I ate it so quickly that I thought maybe I should try the tenders too. I bought 4 pieces thinking I'd eat one now and heat up the others in the hotel late night or the following day. I ate all four before I got to the car! :) With no sauce too!! I'm a huge sauce person and I didn't need a drop. It was that good. The chicken is expertly cooked with flavor all the way through the meat. It's so soft it almost falls apart. And the breading is crispy and flavorful. Some of their special seasoning seals the deal as the best tenders on Earth. The fries are excellent. The Seasoning works it's magic on this too. The coleslaw was sweet and chopped finely. Just the way I like it. The sides were delicious. Hope to try others next time. For to-go orders, they use a rubber band to keep the container closed. Not only is this a good solution to keep things tidy, it's nice to have to shoot at the family before we eat. :) Special note about the staff. I've met several over the last 4 trips here and they are all super friendly and nice. Fast too. The owner was great. Greeted me personally and had a nice chat with him. Good to hear about him and his dad running the place and single handedly getting the place ready for business. And they did a fantastic job. The restaurant itself is deceptively spacious and both the seating area and the restrooms are super clean (as a neat freak, this is important to me). I think there are other locations... but THIS is the one to go to. Food + value + friendly staff = you can not miss! There's even an Aldi parking lot across the street you can easily park in. Overall, a purely wonderful experience. Give it 6 stars if I could. P.S. The only thing I found strange was the light sensor in the bathroom (it's a large single person bathroom) seems to be a little far from the toilet... so while using it, the lights can go off (since the sensor thinks there's no one in the room). Nothing a wave of the arm can't fix. But it's is a little jarring the first time. (So.... Why are you still reading this? Go order now!)

It's not much to look at - no decorations, low ceiling tiles, and just super plain. But the place appeared clean, and the staff is so nice and attentive. I'd give them 4 stars for that! The food is a bit better than standard bar food. I ordered a fried chicken salad. The iceberg lettuce (ugh) was accompanied by a handful of cucumber slices, banana pepper rings, red onion, some cheese, and what I think was boneless, sliced chicken fingers. I opted against having fries in my salad. I also picked off the handful of cherry tomatoes. The dressing - balsamic vinaigrette- was good. My husband enjoyed his club sandwich on rye with American cheese. Apologies - forgot to take food pics!

Soulful Flavor & Stellar Service…read more I ordered the steak and cheese egg rolls, collard greens, honey cornbread, and a Pineapple Mango drink--and every bite was a hit. The egg rolls were generously stuffed, perfectly crispy, and paired with a dipping sauce that was downright addictive. Meaty, cheesy, and satisfying. The collard greens were a standout. The pot liquor was rich and savory without being overwhelmed by vinegar, which is a rare and welcome surprise. As for the honey cornbread--finally, cornbread that tastes like cornbread! Not a slice of yellow cake in disguise, but a true, honey-kissed classic. The Pineapple Mango drink was light, refreshing, and just sweet enough. No syrupy aftertaste, just clean tropical flavor. Kay was incredibly warm and welcoming, and the space was spotless. Smooth R&B played in the background, setting the perfect laid-back vibe while I waited for my food. I'll absolutely be a repeat customer. The prices were on point and better than any fast-food restaurant.

I tried the BBQ Beef Ribs bundle - which came with a drink (I got a Diet Mountain Dew) as well as 2 sides (I chose the Mac n cheese and cornbread, although it already came with 1 piece of cornbread) and 4 Beef ribs, a salmon croquette, steak and cheese egg roll with some sauce, and a peach cobbler. The main entree (ribs) were quite disappointing. There was very little meat on them. The ribs were quite chewy and mostly fat, which is not something I enjoy. They were also quite thin and coated in a ton of very sweet BBQ sauce. So, not a win. The corn bread, though, was actually quite good. It had a sugary moist topping that was very pleasant. It was a bit dry on the inside and did crumble, but the overall flavor was decent. I do appreciate they give you one piece for free. The Mac n cheese was not good, unfortunately. There was very little cheese. Any of the cheese that was present came in clumps, which made for a strange texture and flavor. It was also very buttery and oily, which I'm not a huge fan of either. I would really recommend staying away from this dish unless you like oily macaroni without much cheese. Portion is large. The egg roll was quite tasty. When ordering online, I couldn't find a way to add a single roll to my order, so I had to write it in the description of another item. Thankfully, the person making the food saw this note! The roll is larger than your average Chinese takeout egg roll, and it's packed with delicious items. They have seafood, chicken, and other varieties, but I chose the steak and cheese. Its crispy and the sauce in there (maybe the steak juices?) was delicious. Would have liked a bit more cheese, but overall great. However, the sauce that was served with it was not that great. You do not get the option to choose your sauce. The one it was served with was very acidic and too spicy for my liking. Maybe someone who enjoys spice would have a different opinion. For dessert, the peach cobbler was flavorful. It was made with real peaches and was not overly sweet. I have not tried many peach cobblers, but I assumed they were supposed to have a crust? This did not have a crust, and it was a bit soupy. The 'dough' parts were soggy. My favorite part of the meal was the salmon croquette. I would honestly recommend just getting the bundle meal with these croquettes, because I was that impressed. Definitely homemade and delicious. The portion was bigger than I expected for $4. A bit spicy, crispy on the outside, flaky on the inside. Nice sauce. All in all, there were some parts of the meal that were a let down. Others, like the salmon croquette or the egg rolls, were great. It's a hit or miss type place. I'm still looking for a Southern place in Pittsburgh that blows me away.

Unfortunately, what should have been a joyful meal turned into one of the most disappointing restaurant experiences we've ever had. After waiting nearly 2.5 hours without receiving our meals while watching surrounding tables be seated, served, and attended to, it became difficult not to question whether we were being treated differently. Our server rarely communicated with us directly, despite us overhearing explanations and updates being given to nearby tables about delays and kitchen backups. We were only served drinks and appetizers before spending hours waiting with no real updates, urgency, or effort to resolve the situation. As the wait stretched close to three hours, it became increasingly uncomfortable sitting there watching surrounding tables be seated, served, and checked on while our table remained ignored. Even staff members and nearby guests appeared aware something was wrong, yet no one stepped in to properly address the situation or communicate with us in a meaningful way. When we finally expressed concern about the excessive wait, our server was dismissive and unwilling to get management involved. We eventually had to approach a woman manager ourselves, but even then the situation was not properly addressed. On our way out she stopped us to say our food was almost done and suggested we have it boxed to go. At that point, after wasting almost three hours of our day and being on a schedule to travel home, we were forced to leave around 1:30 pm without ever receiving our meals. What makes this even more upsetting is that this was meant to be a special family gathering that included mothers, veterans, college graduates, and even a child we had to explain the situation to. Instead of ending our weekend together with a celebratory meal, we left feeling ignored, unwelcome, and deeply disappointed. We would have preferred being told outright that they did not intend to serve us. We tried to make the best of it while waiting by playing phone games and staying patient, but no group should be made to feel invisible in a restaurant they made reservations for. We will never return.

It's a bit confusing at first - you don't enter from the "front" of the house; rather, you head around to the back, just off the small parking lot under the balcony. You enter directly into the lovely stone walled bar area that has a decent number of dining tables. There's an upstairs that looks quite different. We - far & away - preferred the downstairs. Much better ambiance. The place was already humming at 5pm! We took the last open table (we had a reservation). Our server came to the table pretty quickly to welcome us, put down menus, and let us know that their draft beer system was on the fritz (what?!) - had been since the day prior. Ack! But they had a really good brown ale in cans from nearby Hazel Grove Brewing, which we had been wanting to try anyway. We ordered our meal pretty soon after, as the place got even busier. But that's when things got a bit harrier. The wait staff got more & more overwhelmed, and the kitchen was overwhelmed, too, clearly as it took 40+ mins for our appetizer to come. But it was good. The goat cheese toast w/ yummy homemade tomato jam. The sliced French bread it was on could've been toasted more - for sure - but the flavors all played really well together. Another 40 mins later, we got our meals, which was fine - we were enjoying each others' company. But we couldn't get our waters refilled to save our lives, & it took forever to get another round of beers. People at other tables were getting restless waiting, too. Three of the 4 of us ordered fish & chips for dinner. The fish was huge - beer battered haddock. The tartar sauce - homemade- was mild and flavorful. The hand cut fries were good, but my sisters-in-law substituted with sweet potato fries - and those were *really* good. My hubs got the bangers & mash which he said "wasn't bad." The peas were fresh and good, and he really liked the mashed potatoes, but sausage was just "meh," he said. No one came to clear our table as people finished their dishes. The 1st beer glasses sat on the table, as did our appetizer dish. As a group, we ordered bread pudding to share for dessert. To my shock, the server was actually going to cram it onto our table with ALL the dirty dinner/appetizer dishes still there! I said, "No no. We need to have these taken away." We started stacking dishes for him to remove. I mean, yuck! We were trying to give the guy the benefit of the doubt on some of the other stuff - he was totally crushed under an avalanche of customers - but that was a bridge too far. As for the dessert - it was a huge serving with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream & a swirl of caramel on top. I thought it was a bit like eating a good apple pie, but my fam wasn't impressed at all (they all love bread pudding). One sis-in-law said it was way too firm and just seemed like the ingredients had been buzzed up and mashed together. BUT --- it was a good night, and we'll be back. I think we would opt for a week night, instead. Hopefully, it will be a bit less busy. And definitely, we want to try the patio. It looks really quaint with all the white twinkle lights. The parking situation is a bit tough for anyone with special needs. One sis got the one (I think) handicap spot near the door (the other small handful of spots were taken); the other sis had to park up a rather steep hill (she waited while we retrieved her car for her when we were done). There's a decent amount of street parking, but I don't know what that situation is like if you come after 5p/530p.
