Hook Burger and Caprese Chicken with Sweet Potato fries
Darryl N.

AMAZING and very affordable for Cali! Arrived after several days at Channel lslands NP, and wanted a meal before crashing at the hotel. Saw this option with burgers and brew on the way. It is located in a strip mall parking lot with other restaurants and shops. You order at the front, with lots of wall menus or hand menus. Then seat yourself. We had the Hook Burger and a Caprese chicken, added on some Sweet Potato fries. Limited but sufficient wine menu, about 6to 8 taps, but two were dry. Staff were friendly and checked us often. Bathrooms were clean, but need to be monitored. Amazing taste and great price.

Haven't been here in years and I need to change that. Definitely one of the best burger places in the area. Always consistent, always delicious. I had the hickory burger and added ranch.... Yummo! Got a side order of onion rings also. Crispy, crunchy and certainly not greasy. Couldn't ask for better. Service was fast and friendly. The restaurant hadn't changed a bit, lol. Doesn't need to either. Clean and inviting just like I remember. I think it's safe to say I'm hooked!

I finally had Hook Burger again after several years. I ordered the Hickory Burger, Maui Burger, and The Trip (potato & sweet potato fries) with onion rings, all to-go so I could eat at home. Extra ranch and BBQ sauce were an additional 50 cents each. It's never as good as eating it fresh in the restaurant, but it was still delicious and satisfying after a long time. My rating: 4/5. Next time, I'll definitely dine in. The staff was very friendly, and the restaurant was clean!

Nice lunch with mom. We both ordered the Hook burger with onion rings. Enjoyed the burger. Nicely built with all the usual fixings lettuce, tomato, onions and pickles. All very fresh. The onion rings were very crisp served with ranch dressing. Service was better than expected. The server came by often to refill our drinks and would ask if we needed anything else. Buen Provecho

Haven't been here in long time. Was craving a burger so I went with the Hickory BBQ Burger combo. My husband got the same burger with onion rings. The onion rings and fries were crispy and hot. Service was quick and kind. I like the seating options and big tables. Glad I went back to remind myself of how good Hook Burger is.

First time eating here after looking for a good place to eat on a Friday night. The Yelp photos convinced me I needed to try this place. My friend and I came and ordered 2 California Burgers, 2 pomegranate lemonades, 1 regular fries and 1 sweet potato fries. Total cost was just under $39. My friend got her California burger with Romaine and a few bites into my burger that has arugula as the standard greens, I think she made a good choice and next visit I would also swap romaine for the arugula. I don't feel Arugula did this burger justice. The burger itself was fantastic. It was juicy and filling. The sweet potato fries were hitting the spot. I decided to not have the sugar on them. I just wanted plain sweet potato fries. After we sat down, someone served us our order to the table ( even though they gave us a table buzzer) and even got us ranch and banana peppers. Just before we were about to leave, the same staff asked us if we wanted refills on our drinks. Of course we said "yes!" And I was pleased to know that lemonades were free refills. Overall this place reminds me of Brook's Burger in Pismo. The food seems like a good value and good quality. The staff were friendly and went beyond doing basic customer service. So glad I tipped them on the order. I didn't expect the table service and I wish I tipped a bit more. They have a nice deck outside to enjoy the cool Oxnard weather if you like.

Who doesn't love a good burger! I was feeling that same thought, and hadn't had HOOK in a long while. I got me a sandwich instead of the burger for some reason and to my delight it was just as good if not better than the burgers. The cashier was awesome and brought out our food. The place was open and clean. I love the large booths, just in case you bring a friend or 2 or 4. The small bar was my favorite, and they had TV's with some sports on. Can't wait have one of their shakes next.

BBQ Worth Fighting Over at Smokin Jay's BBQ & Coffee from Potheads Coffee…read more My wife and I recently stopped by Smokin Jay's BBQ and paired it with a visit to Potheads Coffee, and it turned into one of those meals you end up talking about long after you leave. From the first bite, it was clear this spot takes their BBQ seriously. Entrées: We started by ordering a brisket plate, which came with about 1/4 lb of brisket, roughly six solid pieces, along with macaroni salad and baked beans. Our original plan was to share, but that quickly changed after the first few bites. The brisket was tender, flavorful, and cooked just right with that perfect balance of smoke and juiciness. It didn't take long before we realized sharing wasn't going to cut it. So my wife went back up and ordered a brisket sando with fries, and it absolutely delivered. The sandwich came loaded with brisket, pickles, slaw, and sauce, all working together perfectly. The fries were a great side, crispy and a solid pairing with the sandwich. Sides: The macaroni salad and baked beans that came with the plate were both on point. The mac salad was creamy and complemented the richness of the brisket, while the baked beans added that sweet and savory depth you want with BBQ. Sandwich Details: The sando really stood out, especially with the addition of the slaw. My wife usually isn't a fan of coleslaw, but this one changed things a bit. It wasn't overpowering and added a nice crunch and balance to the sandwich, tying everything together without taking away from the brisket. Drinks and Service: Grabbing coffee from Potheads Coffee alongside the meal was the perfect move. What really stood out, though, was the service. Jay, the owner, was walking around checking in on customers and genuinely engaging with everyone. He even helped my wife decide on a coffee based on what she usually orders at Starbucks, which was a great personal touch. He later stopped by our table, chatted with us for a bit, and made the whole experience feel welcoming and personal. Ambience: The atmosphere strikes a great balance between laid back and lively. It has that casual, welcoming BBQ spot feel where you can relax, enjoy your food, and not feel rushed. Pairing it with Potheads Coffee adds to the experience, making it feel like more than just a meal but a spot you can hang out and enjoy. Overall: Smokin Jay's BBQ is hands down the best BBQ spot I've had in Ventura County so far. Between the quality brisket, well put together sides, standout sandwiches, and the personal touch from the owner, it's an easy recommendation. Pair it with Potheads Coffee, and you've got yourself a top tier Ventura food stop that's definitely worth coming back to.

I rarely eat any "fast food" like McDonalds, Jack In the Box, etc. and consider Five Guys to be a step above those places based on the quality of the food and how everything is cooked to order. I also don't feel sick to my stomach after eating there. I love the topping options like grilled mushrooms that Five Guys offers and the ingredients always taste super fresh to me. The fries with the skin on and malt vinegar are addicting and IMO far superior to In N Out. The prices have definitely gone up a lot over the years...the little cheeseburger and little fries was around $17, which does feel a bit steep, but that's how things go right now. The regular cheeseburger was only $2 more but I didn't want the calories of that, which are over 1000 by the time you add toppings and the little cheeseburger is always perfectly filling for me. When crowded, parking can be a bit difficult but I have always managed to find a spot. This location itself was very clean and the staff were all friendly. It was pretty empty at that particular location, with everyone getting orders to go, so it felt a bit depressing in there, but hopefully I was just in there at a slow time.

Serenity! If I can use one world to describe Lazy Dog in…read moreOxnard is Serenity! We come here to celebrate the good times. But it is different when you need to escape the chaos and a "bad" day/week. Not only it is the confort food we seek, but it's the atmosphere! Adam, our FAVORITE MANGER, always takes the time to stop by and say hello. We met him as a server and since then he was one of our favorites! Another favorite person is Josiah. His energy is so positive, it turns our frowns upside down and we leave this place feeling like we received the hug we needed for years. He wasn't our server tonight, but he stopped and made us feel like we were family! And I cannot forget Kat and Viktor. Our server was awesome and took care of us. Viktor took his time to check in on us. Please come by Lazy Dog in Oxnard, when you are celebrating something, but more importantly, when you are not having a great day, you will leave feeling embraced!

I am not about to stroll into Oxnard and pretend I am some linen-shirted coastal ethnographer with…read morea tote bag full of artisanal certainty. I had never been here before. I was merely a road-battered pilgrim, six hours removed from Oakland, washed ashore near the freeway at the velvet fringe of Ventura County, in that glossy new development called The Collection, where every building looks as though it was approved by a committee whose mission statement was: Let there be ambient lighting and retail optimism. My dinner choices arrived like mildly desperate contestants in a televised pageant. Cheesecake Factory told me the wait would be twenty-five minutes and that they would text me. Reader, I assume that text is now trapped in a ravine somewhere, being nursed back to health by quail. Then there was some steak place whose name dissolved from memory before I finished looking at it. So into Lazy Dog I wandered, hungry, tired, spiritually fragile, and very open to persuasion. And I have to admit: the place has a certain charm. From the back at night, Lazy Dog is weirdly enchanting. The warm lights, the patio glow, the bottles shining through the bar, the whole thing looks like a lodge designed by someone who wanted to seduce exhausted motorists into believing life is still full of promise. Yet the actual entrance is oddly easy to miss. The restaurant is basically playing hard to get. A chain restaurant with mystery. A flirt. A woodland princess in practical shoes. Inside, the vibe is part upscale sports bar, part polished suburban den, part "let's make everyone from picky teenagers to diet-conscious moms to semi-hungover road warriors feel included." Buffalo Wild Wings, but after therapy, better lighting, and a semester abroad. The seating is not what I would call voluptuous. You are not sinking into a cloud of velvet mercy here. But the room is lively, social, and good-humored. It hums in that specific modern way that says yes, you may order tacos, noodles, a burger, or a cocktail with fruit in it, and no one will judge your lack of culinary allegiance. The cocktail situation was fun. I had the raspberry sangria, which tasted less like old-world wine-country sophistication and more like Hawaiian Punch got hired by a vineyard. It was bright, sweet, cheerful, and only slightly ridiculous. A prom queen in a stemmed glass. I did not hate it. I also did not see God. 3/5. Service was reliable, friendly, and sincere, which in today's dead-eyed hospitality landscape feels almost mystical. No fake grandeur, no attitude, no emotional frostbite. Just kind, competent people doing their jobs without making me feel like an interruption in their evening. That deserves respect. The menu is broad enough to make you nervous. Burgers, Italian-ish things, Thai-ish things, tacos, bowls, pizza, noodles, probably a diplomatic treaty if you ask politely. Usually a menu this sprawling suggests culinary panic. But Lazy Dog somehow lands on the right side of chaos. Not transcendent, not revolutionary, but steady in a way that is more useful than many trendier places would like to admit. The fried hard-boiled deviled eggs were the surprise star. In theory, this is the kind of appetizer that sounds like America whispering, "What if we made the picnic more reckless?" In practice: very good. Crispy outside, creamy inside, faintly absurd, and impossible not to admire. 4.5/5. The shrimp tacos were also solid. Bright, fresh, avocado doing its usual California diplomacy, pickled onions bringing color and sass, and the whole plate looking just photogenic enough to make younger foodie civilians feel seen by the algorithm. 4.3/5. The shrimp Thai noodles were decent too. Not an oracle, not a revelation, not the kind of dish that makes monks ring bells in the mountains, but flavorful and more than respectable after a long drive. 3.8/5. That may be Lazy Dog's real strength. It is not trying to be a sacred culinary temple guarded by tattooed sommeliers and fermented foams. It is trying to be open late, fun, dependable, and welcoming enough to make a tired traveler feel the night still has one last good chapter in it. And after six hours in the car, that is not nothing. That is grace with parking. So no, this is not the hidden gastronomic throne of Oxnard. But it is a lively, late-night, good-energy landing pad with charming exterior glow, sincere service, fun drinks, and better food than a cynic might expect. Would I come back? Absolutely. Mostly because Lazy Dog fed me, comforted me, and acknowledged the passage of time, which is more than I can say for Cheesecake Factory. Also, points for being open until midnight, because some places close early as if adulthood itself should have a curfew. Lazy Dog, by contrast, understands the nocturnal needs of the weary, the under-caffeinated, the gossip-prone, and the mildly glamorized freeway drifter still chasing one last decent meal before surrendering to hotel-sheet oblivion.
