I was in the area for the day and searching for dinner options brought me to Hoof's in Pawcatuck. The ambiance is elevated above casual but not stuffy or exclusionary. I was in there a short time after opening and my waitress was fantastic. I will say the bar staff were a little sweary amongst themselves which could be heard when I wasn't even seated at the bar. They serve warm bread and hummus to start the meal which was great. Im not a hummus person so I used the table olive oil with some fresh grated parmesan instead. The meatballs were amazing. The veal cutlet was ok. The sauce is good. Pasta is served tossed in the sauce rather than just placed on top. I eat a lot of red sauce italian and the food leans roughly middle of the road for me BUT the total experience brought it to 4 stars. I would definitely return and will check out some other dishes. Why did I detect some arrogance in the staff? I am an ordinary person just trying to have an ordinary nonalcoholic drink at the bar. I am not a demanding customer and I don't drink alcohol, so my perception of events and attitudes was not askew. I tried to speak to the manager, but management apparently had no interest in speaking to me. Very noisy environment, but it was a night to be with family and friends and celebrate. I'll give them this one. Menu items seemed overpriced, but again I decided not to eat. I cannot comment on food quality, but I can comment on service. And I am doing so right now. FYI...tipping is never automatic. I decide what I want to tip, and you have no right to round up to the next whole dollar because you don't have the change on hand. Is this a special occasion restaurant only? If so, I'll go elsewhere. read more

There are so many things I love about this place. It's clean, upbeat, and the service is prompt. Our servers name was Sam. Clean cut young man, very proper which is so appreciated these days. We sat outside on the patio because it was booked solid and I was really craving the food here. It's pretty noisy with the traffic and the trains, but it's a small price to pay for perfection. We had the lobster nachos for an appeteaser, YUMMMM! I had the surf and turf pasta. It was great. My son had grilled chicken and mashed potots, the wifey had a white truffle pasta with grilled chicken. The food was great. I hate to reiterate this but, the traffic noise is obnoxious. Amazing dinner tonight at Hoof's!!! We had the Bone-in Veal Chop, it was HUGE, tender and simply scrumptious. The Caprese salad with tomatoes that were red, ripe and delicious. Okay, we've been looking for a new high quality Mediterranean place that has other things as well. Hoofs Restaurant on the Pawcatuck/Westerly line (I prefer to think of it as Westerly) nailed it. With outstanding service, a great, lively vibe (without being obnoxious) and incredible food, we had an amazing 39th birthday dinner for my wife. (We had a 39th birthday for her over a decade ago as well...., hmmm). Our server Beth was generous with her time, gave outstanding dining suggestions, was intimately familiar with the menu and ingredients, and was very nice and hospitable! Thanks Beth!!! We started off with an appetizer to share, it was a filet mignon carpaccio, which is a thinly sliced, almost tartare consistency on a delicious bed of fresh arugula (In February, nice touch), topped with romano crumble and bits of crispy prosciutto. I could've eaten just that for dinner but I wanted the pork chop that my buddy told me I HAD to go to Hoofs for. So clearly I had the pork chop calabrese plate, which blew everything you've ever thought about a pork chop away. Moist, tender, flavorful and definitely filling. Served with spinach, peppers, sun-dried tomatoes and thick, super flavorful slices of tender, fried potato, it filled me up, and that's hard to do. My wife had the salmon piccata which was one of the nightly specials, and she, who NEVER finishes her whole dinner, loved it so much she "ate through the pain" as I recommended and killed it! Her dish came with some light/fluffy mashed potatoes that were lightly seasoned and delicious. She also had the arugula salad which includes pears, red onion, shaved fennel and goat cheese (gross...sorry, my opinion, she and many others love it, haha) Closing out the night we had a delicious piece of authentic Key Lime pie with an Oreo crumble crust. Beth even jazzed it up for my wife's birthday and added a candle and even got me to sing Happy Birthday to my beautiful wife. Perfect night, perfect meal, our new go-to, special event place. As a comparison, we went to a highly advertised/recently opened place in one of the casinos recently, paid DOUBLE what it cost us for a better, more delicious and enjoyable meal at Hoofs. read more

I found this gem earlier this year, and I honestly can't stop going back. I love going out to eat, but Hoofs has quickly become my absolute favorite spot in the area. The food is incredible every single time--the Linguine alla Vongole and Rigatoni alla Vodka are hands-down the best I've ever had. The drinks are amazing too, especially the sangria! The atmosphere is fantastic and welcoming, and the service is always exceptional. Every visit feels like a great experience from start to finish. What an amazing meal we just had at Hoofs! the pan-seared scallop special was delicious, with a lobster and asparagus risotto which was to die for! Another in our party had the very hearty Bolognese which he raved about. The mussels, clams, and fried calamari were also devoured by our party. A busy noisy Italian restaurant on a Friday night. While someone screwed up the reservation, we we lucky to get a seat. The clams oreganato were good as an appetizer and the salmon and the pork chop was big and moist. Hoofs is a good place to go for veal and pork, so that was no surprise. It was the second time I gave them a chance. The first time, I found it impersonal and the food bland. I've never tasted Rabe, which had no character. The last time I had the franchise, the chicken was tough and dry. I could have said something, but I shouldn't have to for $25 Entree. Nice upscale Italian restaurant environment. Although we didn't have reservations, we were able to get a spot at the bar. The bar tender was very attentive, even though super busy and everything we had was delicious. We started with a burrata salad - tomatoes, pickled onion, balsamic vinegar and burrata. So delicious. I had the white truffle mushroom Alfredo fettuccine, the Alfredo was not too rich and the pasta was Al Dente, both to my preference. It was fantastic. My partner had chicken Marsala. The sauce was rich and Betty and intense with perfectly mashed potatoes. We topped it off with Key Lime Pie and Ice Cream. The Key Lime Pie had an Oreo crust, which isn't quite as good as Graham cracker crust. The Ice Cream was creamy and homemade. Hoofs was one of our go-to restaurants in the Westerly/Stonington area. Our last visit was not so good. First of all, our server did a very good job and our cocktails (martini's) from the bar were also very good. Its what came out of the kitchen that was not-so-good. We started with the tomato salad. The tomato(s)were nothing better than one can find during the off season (greenhouse) vs local and the cheese was plain old mozzarella slices that one could buy in the local grocery store. Nothing special. I think they could've done better. Both my wife and I had chicken dishes for entrées. I had the chicken marsala. The 3 small scallopini were dried out and hard. Usually when I get chicken marsala, it is covered in sautéed fresh mushrooms with the wine sauce. There were no mushrooms in this dish. It was sub-par in my opinion. (I've had better at local pizza joints) My wife had a chicken piccata dish, which was also overcooked and dried out. I am not sure what is going on at Hoofs but appears like many other successful restaurants in the area, complacency has taken hold after a steady clientele has been established. The food coming out of the kitchen simply is not up to their reputation. Maybe this was a one off or maybe this is a pattern that is starting to set in. Time will tell. read more

Very nice restaurant located in the downtown area. What I liked: Very attentive service. We had a reservation and were seated promptly. The team service was great as they had dedicated staff serving bread, water, and serving your food as it came up. The server was able to focus on us. The food: The prime rib was excellent and my wife ordered shrimp over risotto (exchanged shrimp for scallops with no issue). She also ordered a shrimp cocktail and raved about the cocktail sauce. The cocktails and wine list. Cocktails were very creative and the wine list was extensive by th glass and bottle. My only disappointment was the oysters I ordered. They were so small I worried I might be breaking the law eating them rather that letting them grow for a year . A go-to if you're visiting the area or live there. this space has been a few different restaurants and this is by far the best! The restaurant was packed with people. 100% recommend making a reservation. We started with the mussels. Plenty for 3 people and the broth was flavorful. I had the shrimp scampi. There was plenty of large, fresh shrimp and the Pasta was delicious. Another person at the table had the scallops with lobster risotto. The picture speaks for itself- so good! Highly recommend. The first time I went to hoof's was for my boyfriends birthday and the service/food was great. So great we decided to get a gift card there for my parents for Christmas. We had gone out to a casual dinner elsewhere (pooch's down the street) and decided to stop in after the game to grab the gift card. I was wearing a beanie and my boyfriend was wearing a hat-which we understand is not appropriate attire for hoofs. We just wanted a gift card. The bartender refused to give us the time of day after the hostess had told us we were all set to go ask him for the gift card. He said to the young boy "get them out of here they can't be dressed like that" the hostess then came back over and had to explain to him we just needed a gift card cause he wouldn't even look at us. Still got the gift card cause I didn't want that one bartenders attitude to ruin the entire restaurant for us. Then my parents went to dinner at hoofs last night with the gift card. They cut my dad's scallops in half my moms salmon was overcooked. $40 for scallops cut in half is crazy. place is overrated but maybe if you catch them on a good night you will luck out. read more

We were a bunch of hungry musicians looking for a late dinner after a concert nearby. I had made a reservation for the group for outside on Open Table, but the remnants of Hurricane Ida had other plans. We called to see if we could get a table separate from the main dining room. When we arrived everything was all set up and to the side as requested. Even though they had officially closed, they continued to take our orders without seeming to rush our very chatty bunch. The COVID protocols on their website state that they try to limit parties to 90 minutes, and previous reviews have mentioned feeling rushed, but the only sign of them keeping us in a time limit was how eerily fast the food came out and how quickly dirty plates disappeared and how quickly drink refills came out. Completely welcome when it's late and you are hungry!! Service- 5+ stars. The food: why the place is called "Hoofs" I have no idea. The cuisine is Italian and perfectly executed (though when the server announced the "hoof salad" I did half expect to see a equine foot on top of the greens). Lobster risotto with scallops was right up there with another one of my all time favorite risottos (one in Italy and one in Iceland). The fresh pappardelle was perfection. Our bass player who is a huge foodie, went old school and got the chicken parm and we didn't hear a peep out of him the whole time but for the nom nom sounds coming from his end. Top that off with dollar Bluepoint oysters ("dollah oystahs" as they say across the river in Rhode Island) and it was a magical evening despite the raging storm outside. I don't know how many times I've driven past hoofs and thought absolutely nothing of it. I'm pretty sure that the location threw me off, as it has seemed to change hands quite a few times over the years. On a whim we opted to stop in for a drink and an appetizer....Upon arriving I was taken at back by how busy it was, so busy there was not a single bar seat. By a stroke of luck there was 1 two top table in the bar area. At this point we had to see what the heck was going on in there. Was it happy hour specials, Sunday dinner specials??? Much to our surprise we were greeted by the absolute friendliest most personable host I think in the entire town (Patrick), and we just new we had to stay for more then an app. I have to say the entire dining experience was top notch and if I could give more than a 5 star rating I would. The pricing was more than we anticipated, but that's par for the course in 2022. The steaks are cooked to perfect, and can be paired with a great cocktail or wine as well!! Very nice desert options like an amaretto cake if your into desert(whose not) All in all if your looking for a really nice local dining experience and ok with spending some money to do it, then HOOFs it is!!! Although I've been to a lot of Italian restaurants, I can say by far that Hoofs really knows how to provide great food and service. Just from the environment when you walk In seeing wait staff pouring water to the clean glasses and folded napkins. My second review of this place- why? Be at it's still that good a year and half later!!! Went with my daughter as they were promoting last of their Pumpkin martinis -though we were disappointed that they had run out of pumpkin- the rest of meal did not disappoint! For starters - some very cold Oyster Bag - Sauvignon blanc- NZ is def my go to for this wine. We ordered the lobster nachos and oh my thighs!! This dish made me truly understand all the cooking shows when they talk about flavor layers and added crunch- do not go here if you are worried about calories/ you will not enjoy yourself- we foodies love great food at any cost - these are must for any lobster lover! My daughter and I ordered off the specials menu- she had the scallops and sausage pasta! They n me and their own - so good! This was combined with asparagus, cherry peppers, roasted tomatoes and Alfredo sauce pasta- she loved it- and had plenty for leftovers the next day. I ordered the Pan seared scallops with duck confit and spinach risotto along with a limoncello beurre blanc- anything with risotto I'm in- but added with super sweet scallops and a light sauce- I'm in heaven! Leftovers also did not disappoint! We wanted to order dessert because well tiramisu-!! They make one of the best i've ever tried! We opted for espresso martinis and what a perfect ending to a wonderful night. Shout out to our waiter Kyle, who was on point all night and even entertained me while I rambled on about life.
