It's always a good sign when you pull up to a restaurant and the parking lot is full. The Honey Bee Cafe is definitely a local favorite! Even though they were packed on a Tuesday at noon we were immediately greeted with a friend smile and we were seated right away. Just as soon as the tables cleared out, they were filling up again! Service was fast, friendly and attentive. Their menu is quite large and includes breakfast, lunch and dinner items. I enjoyed the country fried steak with country gravy. While the outside of this restaurant appears quite plain and unassuming. The inside is clean, cozy farmhouse atmosphere with comfortable booths and table options. They even have a large banquet room off the side that can be reserved for special events.

We read about this cafe being rated an excellent place to dine chosen from other diners across the country so we thought we'd give it a try on our way to Springfield. It was lunchtime when we arrived, but my spouse opted for breakfast and it did not disappoint. The bacon was crispy, the eggs cooked perfectly, and the hash browns perfectly crisp to her liking. I was very hungry and choose the spaghetti bolognese with meat sauce, which definitely delivered the flavor! The menu is huge and the service is great. This cafe is definitely worth the trip!

OK. Here's the deal. I've reviewed Honey Bee Cafe before and it got five stars. So, you ask, why am I doing another review? Great question. Well, the new photo is the answer. That's peanut butter pie. Here's the deal... I will now rate all my future inter-personal relationships on whether or not you like this pie. I have no use for those who do not like this pie. This is THE BEST pie I've ever eaten! I am COMPLETELY full. But, I WILL finish this pie. And, here's the way it needs consumed: Get it with the ice cream. Get it with the coffee. Get it with a fork (because that's what she gave me and it did not hinder my experience one bit.) Enjoy nirvana.

Exactly what you'd expect from a restaurant in a small town! Waitress was very kind and the food was good. My only qualm was there were a lot of flies inside but idk how much can be done to prevent that on a hot summer day.

What a hole in the wall but great food and omg the homemade cinnamon toast. Stopped in during a business trip. Ordered the western Benedict. Really good very large portions. Coffee was good but the orange juice is FRESH squeezed. Delicious. Stop in you won't be disappointed.

Outstanding service and food! A huge menu (I came at lunch) and couldn't be happier. Chicken noodle soup and turkey club were delicious!

Hashstack with no gravy

I can't believe I just spent 13 dollars on this and it didn't even come with gravy like advertised. Did not come with the cinnamon toast either. They have gone way downhill recently. Disappointed.

Just passing through Matoon. Wanted to eat at a non-chain restaurant. Searched Yelp and decided…read moreto try the Alamo. Very nice first impression and welcome. The loaded side salad was excellent. Better than the normal side salad. Ordered the Prime Rib. A bit tough but flavorful. Prompt service and received our meal quickly. Plenty of food, generous portions. Bottom line, next time passing through, we will eat here again.

Hey, again, faithful review readers!…read more So, today, we are dining at Alamo Steak House here in Mattoon, IL. We live in a small town area and this is definitely a local favorite for many in the area, us included. This is to say that the experience, the food and drink is consistently very well done. As we pulled up, the parking lot was JAMMED! It was so crowded there was only about two spots available. Wifey told me to check the wait time. So, we went in. No wait!!! It appears that everyone drove separately. The hostess was very pleasant. We had her switch our table because we like the tables vs. the booth. Today we sat in the upstairs balcony. We've sat here once before a few years ago. Pleasant. More cozy than the common dining room. Our server was very prompt, and since we come here enough, we knew what we wanted. I got the smothered chicken with a sidecar porkchop (just because I can). Sides of House Salad and Onion Rings. Wifey ordered the distiller, baked potato and a salad. For the first time ever, the dinner rolls at the table were actually overdone. It's usually crisp outside and soft inside, but this was actually way too hard. Wifey likes things well done and she said this is just not edible. This could have been easily remedied, but we did not want more so we left it be. But this was the first time this has ever been an issue in 13 years. Salads came out first. I had ordered a house salad with blue cheese but got a Caesar salad. Lots of Parmesan, good presentation. I decided I was meant to have a Caesar salad and was glad this mix up occurred. Wifey had a house salad and it was good, but she was eyeing up my Caesar with those thieving eyes! So we will call it a happy accident! Shlafly's makes a competent stout, a little hoppier than you'd expect from a stout, a little spritzier than you're used to in a stout, but I knew this going in. It's a solid brew, but not creamy like most stouts. Wifey's raspberry margarita was, good, according to her, but a little sweet. She squeezed in some lemon and lime and that helped add more tart which pleased her. She does not usually get non citrus based Margaritas, so she chalked it up to that. Again, the drink was still good, just not her favorite. A little long in the main course delivery, but, wifey had a medium well steak and that takes some time. However, it seems to be taking much longer than expected... The food DID show up, just before it became a seriously long wait. My food: Most things were not quite hot enough. All the flavors were great, but, it feels like the food was under a heat lamp that didn't work for too long, or maybe not under it for too long of a time.. At a steakhouse as "high quality" as this one, I expected better. Since our server was uber busy, we didn't voice our complaint. He was truly running hard up and down the stairs so we have no complaints with his service. But we are both disappointed that it was very not hot. And we were hungry, and the flavors were good, so we chose to eat it as is. Wifey said all the flavors of her steak and potato were on point but admittedly the not hot part took its toll on the overall. We are sad to report all of these very unusual mishaps but we really still swear by the place for the great food and for the many, many experiences that were consistently on point. We also know if we would have complained or asked it would have been fixed no holds barred. But it was pretty busy and we did not want to wait. So if one experience out of maybe 50 was a bit sub par, we are still going to consider it a winner and well worth looking past. It just seems everything happened at once. So hopefully we are all good for another 50 visits!

Not a terrible problem, but noticed. Then, wifey asked for napkins. They took a wiggle to get here. I asked for my Yuengling Lager and water. The water didn't show up. Then, Oldest and I ordered bowls of chili. Hers was a bowl, mine was a cup. I guts the server didn't hear one of us correctly. It was steady, but not much of a wait, so, pressure should have been not too bad. Things got better. But, one entree came out about 10 minutes after the rest. Timing. It's a thing. The Loaded Mac & Cheese was good. The chili was decent (but small and missing spices). The rest my party loves TRH. I've never been a fan, so when one came locally, I knew I'd be here often. And, since you obviously follow me extensively on Yelp, you know my usual disclaimer that chains are mostly about service and execution. There were rough spots in the start and then we had a bit of recovery. Of course the check was wrong in the chili cup/bowl problem. But, overall, it was ok. The food was executed properly, except one entree being ten minutes after the rest wasn't great, but didn't derail it too badly. Wifey's turn: Skip what he said. Even though I was under the weather, the food was great. The steak kebabs never fail to please with a great texture and excellent flavoring/seasoning. Overall, the server did recover the night and it was a good time. We even saw several people there that we knew, workers and friends. Don't let Mr. Sourpuss taint your thoughts (although he wasn't untruthful).

With that being said, last night we went for a girls night and it was not a great experience. It started out strong but slowly went down hill. Our waitress honestly did the best she could. Our food came out in 2 different rounds, 20 minutes apart. She did apologize for that. But again, she did not being us the food, it was runners. Around 6 pm, all of sudden the music was cranked up like we were in a bar. The waitresses could not hear their customers and we couldn't talk. Our waitress apologized saying that one particular manager always does that. I asked to speak to the manager and she was pretty rude to say the least. She told me that it was "company policy to turn the music up 96% at a certain time. We are a sports bar that's how it should be." I just kinda looked at her and explained that I had never been to one that was like that and asked if she could possibly please turn the volume down a little so we don't have to scream at each other. She rolled her eyes and said "I'll see what I can do." The volume did get turned down. Will I go back.... It won't be my first choice.
