Kenny made some amazing catfish and green beans for us! He waited on our table. Great option for soul food in Mattoon.

WOW!!! So glad we stopped in today, I've been driving by regularly but never had time to stop. Our…read moreserver was amazing and on top of our drinks, checked in several times to make sure the food was good. I believe the owner (or possibly the chef) stopped by and made sure everything was up to par as well. I honestly thought it was going to be a much smaller space as when I'd driven by it looked small, but there was so much seating inside! The decor was beautiful, too, and the music was awesome. We both had chicken and waffles and my LORD it was so good! The waffles were so crispy and flavorful (I've seriously never had waffles so good in my life) and the chicken was breaded well, perfectly seasoned, and was super fresh. I'm pretty picky about sweet tea. If Wilford Brimley doesn't side eye me with serious concern as I drink it then don't even bother. This was so perfectly southern sweet I was in heaven. Sweetest sweet tea I've had in Illinois. I'd go back for that alone even if the food was just okay. We had decided on fried green tomatoes (which were soooooo dang good and zesty!) when she told us they JUST got fried okra and I said both. Just give us both. I'm a fried okra fiend and was so happy I could've cried. The okra was fresh and perfectly crispy, and the seasonings, again, were immaculate. Absolutely cannot wait to go back. (I just need to give my stomach a lil rest, we both took home over half of our meal there was so much.)

Delicious food and friendly service. It's a casual place but it's a lot of fun and the food is…read moregreat.

I came in because I had heard from family members how good the food is. I brought in a friend, her…read morehusband and their two kids. It was near the end of the night but the service was not lacking. I order a piece of fish, a pork chop, black eyed peas and yams. The fish was flaky and crispy. The pork chop was seasoned well and cooked perfectly. The black eyed peas were tender. They yams were seasoned well but tasted like they were from a can. We got dessert. I was disappointed that they were out of sweet potato pie. I had the butter pecan cake and my friend had the double chocolate cake. Over all we all enjoyed our meal. My friend's son tore up his wings. For all the food we ordered we only spent $35. This place is reasonably price and delicious. I would highly recommend it to anyone. The only reason I wouldn't give five stars is because there were several items they were out of. I would just suggest getting there early. I would go back anytime I'm in Decatur. As a matter of fact, I would make this a "have to visit" place when I am there.

Not quite my idea of soul food but sort of. I've eaten fried walleye fillets with side dishes here…read moretwice and they've been quite good. Place looks clean to the point of obsession and the staff have been solicitous and kindly. Breading on the fish has been very nice. I wish I'd asked for greens but foolishly I've asked for green beans. The Friday fish buffet was unexpected and not self-service: ask for what you want and they'll put it on a plate for you. Then they'll bring you deep-fried catfish or walleye to go with it. I cannot understand why they're not mobbed with customers, but then again I left Decatur in 1981 and spent another year there in 1991-92 and I don't understand the place though I was born there. Watson's is one of the cleaner and shinier hangouts but it still has some campus vibes. A lot to choose from. The prices aren't bad for portion and quality. Coming in the first time it wasn't that busy. It's a lot crazier when school is in session. This has been around for a while now but it's still a pretty cleaner looking kind of place okay to bring families of students or whatever. A lot on the menu. There's shit tons of drinks and we got a few of these. It's about $5 to get a slushie which hit the spot because outside it was hot. There's a few flavors to choose from which rotate. Among the cocktails are a few that are cool looking. I got one of the seasonal specials, the Campfire Mule. This was made with ginger beer, lime, and whiskey. It's about $12 for the cheapest entrees. She got the Tofu Basket, which was big enough for a meal. This was panko breaded tofu triangles and waffle fries, with a choice of a sauce. I got the Watson's Po Boy. This comes with a choice of protein and I got tofu. Comes topped with lettuce, onions, and a choice of sauce and got it with the vegan remoulade. Great stuff. Also has plenty of choices for chicken. They got the hot style. Got to say it has lots to choose from. It's closed Mondays and Tuesdays. There's chicken of course but also plenty of things for vegans and vegetarians.

I am here for Ebertfest and it has now taken over an hour to get drinks, food, and dessert. I am trying to flag down my server because I was worried about the amount of time it was taking. She apologized and took off the dessert, but she seemed to be the only one working. I was near the back so I got to see all the other servers "yucking" it up and just standing around while this poor lady was doing laps. I am from the service industry and only 40 so I'm not being a Karen. This server deserves a huge raise and probably a better job. Pair that with them cutting down the menu, this place went to a "must see" in Champaign to a maybe. What I ate was tasty, but the rest of Champaign has caught up and starting to leave them behind.
