Homewood was our first winery stop on a guided Sonoma tour that took us to three wineries. It was by far our favorite experience, but I must acknowledge that it was likely not the normal tasting experience they offer. Our group did not go the direction that the signs on the property suggest is toward the tasting room. Instead, we went into, a room that is clearly set up for tastings, and perfectly sat our group of 13 around a wooden U-shaped table. Our wine expert from Homewood (Cheryl) was able to stand in the middle of the U where she taught us about wine tasting, poured our glass glasses, and engaged us in a sensory experience around wine tasting. This is a hidden gem in Sonoma County. I've lived in Sonoma County for most of my life and had never heard of this winery previously. It's nestled adjacent to Hanson's Distillery. If you didn't know it was there, you'd see the massive Hanson's and move right along. We stopped here during our Sidecar Tours, tour. We were greeted with a warm welcome and that vibe lasted throughout our stay. This is truly a small, boutique winery. They only bottle 3000 cases a year. Our group sat in an enclosed side room. Our host was fabulous. She did a great job explaining the winery and wines tasted. In fact, she was the most thorough host we've ever experienced. Like I said, we live in Sonoma County and have visited several local wineries. She was the absolute best. That's not just me, but everyone in our group felt the same way. The intimate setting lead to pretty much an open forum, where questions were asked and answered. We learned so much during our brief visit. Wine is subjective, each person has their own personal taste and likes/dislikes. For me, everything we tasted was wonderful, except the Port. I'm not a Port fan, but everyone else in the room seemed to enjoy it. For this quality wine, the bottles themselves were quite inexpensive. All bottles were priced at $22/individual. $20 or less if you bought a case or more. Simple and easy. read more

Out of the 3 wineries we visited in Sonoma, I think this was my favorite. Compared to Cline and Jacuzzi, it's like a Mom and Pop operation vs. a corporation. They only produce a few hundred cases of wine each year, compared to the thousands produced by the bigger wineries. But they believe in quality! The gentleman providing our wine tasting was jovial and loved making jokes, making the experience fun and less stuffy like you would get at most other wineries. It might have been that I was already tipsy, but I definitely enjoyed our short time at this winery! read more

Homewood embodies stereotypical Sonoma. It's small, quaint, and friendly. While it was so quaint I felt like I was drinking wine in someones backyard, I enjoyed how much less commercial the feel of this winery is. The standout here was the port. First, I typically don't like port but this one was amazing. Sweet, but not too sweet. Not too tannic and not too high in alcohol. The best part is that for about $30, you get a full sized bottle (note: most ports are half bottles sold for $30 or more). All the other wines were affordable too, and they had discounts if you buy several bottles. Lastly, I really loved that the tastings were free. In fact, there are about 10 wines you can sample, and they encourage you to have a second tasting if you want. Don't forget to try the truffles, they are amazing and go great with the port because the contain some of their signature Wizzbanger wine. read more

Came here on a Wednesday afternoon; our first winery stop and it was a great one to start with. Homewood is a small winery (in terms of landmass at this location) and has a very intimate feel. The tasting room is very small, basically just a countertop fit for about four people. The staff greeted us when we walked in and told us the tasting is $5 for 6 pours and if we buy a bottle, the $5 goes towards that. There was one other couple there and two staff members, so we each had a personalized, one-on-one experience. The gentleman pouring our wine was very knowledgeable and friendly. The wines were very good; a few of the reds were blends. We ended up buying 6 bottles, which gave us 10% off; if you buy a case, they give 25% off. Their wines are very reasonably priced, around $22/bottle on average. There is not much to the grounds since the company gets most of their grapes from other vineyards. They do have a small plot of land growing pinot noir grapes, so at least customers get the general idea. They have a small picnic area too. read more

What an interesting little place this is. Their case production is only 3,000 and the proprietor keeps the alcohol level at 12.5% or below on all his wines. The tasting room is super small and the restroom is literally next to the bar. But, the tastings are complimentary! I was met by a very friendly and informative retired gentleman who works their two days a week who was very enthusiastic about the wines. He poured me a whole slew of stuff and provided lots of information. Nothing here really wowed me other than the ports which were great. But, you gotta respect a man who sets out to do something and stays true to himself. read more

You will taste some of the best reds - ever - at Homewood. This place is not upscale in terms of decor or landscape - their tasting room consists of a little kitchen and a bathroom to the right of the bar. There is a cool outdoor tasting room but it seems like it's reserved for groups. The service is nice - the winemaker is super down to earth and even came into the tasting room - after doing some work outside with a forklift - to meet some of his customers. Homewood seriously has some of the best reds. Their Flying Wizzbanger is yummy. I usually don't like Ports - but their Ports here are yummy and great - especially with chocolate covered blueberries or truffles. Tastings are free and there are so many wines to taste. They give you a judging card so you can make notes on their wines and let me tell you, I felt so official. Unfortunately, we went on a very hot hot hot day. We bought a half case of wine and then went out to dinner in Sonoma. The wine was stored in our car during dinner - which was stupid of us - because when we got home, the wines all turned to vinegar. Impromptu wine tasting trips are the best. You end up having no idea where you're going and when you run into something random you just go for it. This was the case with Homewood. We intended to go somewhere else, missed it and then ran into Homewood, which ended up being our favorite stop of the day. The tasting room is quite small, although they do have a lounge outside, that I never really saw the interior but i'm sure it's fine. We happen to come in on them having lunch so we felt a little bad for having to interrupt her lunch. Anyway, Jasmine was the pourer extraordinaire of the day. She was friendly and a tad bit sarcastic for a touch of humor that made our tasting entertaining and fantastic. I had to show her the clip from Toddlers and Tiaras with Alana and her mother the coupon queen so she would understand what I meant when i called her Honey Boo Boo Child. The wine was pretty awesome. I don't think i had anything that I didn't like. We had a mixture of reds and whites and even ended up buying a case of their 2008 Chardonnay for $80. Yeah... that's less than $7/bottle. woot!! I think some of the other girls bought a few bottles of red as well. Did i mention that the tasting was free? If you decide to do a Sonoma wine trip, I would totally recommend coming here. If you have a party of 6 or more, you definitely need to make a reservation. It's really small so this is not only beneficial for you but for them as well. When you first pull up (to a barn), you'll think to yourself "Why would this place get 5 stars and such good ratings on Yelp?" It doesn't look like the type of winery where you'd ask your limo to pull up to. But taste their wines and experience their tastings to understand why people like this place so much. Our tasting host, Jasmine, accommodated our group of 15+ people in the outdoor lounge/patio because the tasting room itself is tiny! Jasmine was great! She is so friendly, knowledgeable, accommodating, and down-to-earth. I like that she let us try more wines than the tasting usually entails. But that worked out for us, because I realized I liked a lot of them and ended up just buying a whole sampler case for myself :X (very inexpensively priced btw...comes out to less than $15/bottle) My favorites were the House Blend (Flying Wizzbanger?) because it has a spicy kick to it, and the Port which was VERY sweet and syrupy. Based on the wines, I'd give this place a 1 or 2. I hate saying that, because everything else about this place is a 4 or 5. I came here on a tour with a group of 12, and they had plenty of outdoor seating. The weather was in our favor and we enjoyed the sun and the table service. Things I liked: 1) Sitting outside 2) Paper & pencil to jot down notes. The paper had all the wines we would be tasting. More places should do this. 3) AWESOME SERVICE. I remember being told who was serving us wine -- but I forget her name. Forgive me! She was awesome! She put up with my friends and their antics. She didn't even bat a lash when Dee compared her wine to menstrual blood. 4) The owner came by and said hi. They had the sort of attitude of, "hi! try our wine! Of the 4 wineries my boyfriend and I visited in Sonoma, this was our favorite! The vineyard is right in the middle of Sonoma valley, but its small size and incredibly friendly staff really set it apart. Patty led our tasting and let us sit outside on the patio, which was beautiful. With each wine she brought out to us, she had a plethora of interesting bits of information about how it was made, what foods it would pair best with, and just general cool facts about the vineyard. Despite the fact that there was a big party coming in after us, she made the effort to make sure we weren't rushed and that we got her undivided attention (even provided us with restaurant recommendations for dinner afterwards!). The wines themselves were great and we bought a bottle of their Dolcetto. I would absolutely recommend this winery to anyone coming to Sonoma. I have been to Homewood several times, and have never been disappointed. Great place to stop in and sip the new releases, or as a first stop on a California wine tasting tour. If you let them know you have members in your group who have not been wine tasting before, they will walk you though how to taste, what to look for - and then, based on what your guests said they liked, recommend other wineries you might want to visit. Not unusual to have the owner/winemaker, Dave Homewood, in the tasting room to talk about the wine and winemaking. Love Homewood's Sauvignon Blanc, and their Flying Wizzbanger Red to name a few. I have used their wines as holiday gifts - since Homewood doesn't sell to grocery stories or big chains, you know you are giving a unique gift that is of good quality, and if your friends like wine, this is a gift that will be enjoyed. The tasting room was petite with no frills - it really felt like I was tasting in someone's home kitchen. $10 per person wine tastings of six wines from an impressively large list, and waived with bottle purchase. We liked so many that we settled on a 6 bottle mixed case for about $25 per bottle. After reading about this winery being a local one man show, my husband and I had been dying for weeks to come support and check out this winery. We liked it - we just didn't feel more than that. Tasting was $5 pp (older websites claim the tastings free), which is an ok deal. We just didn't love any of the wines - we thought they were good, but nothing special. We liked the port, not too syrupy like most ports, and they add white chocolate with it, which is a great combination. Great service. Just nothing felt special to us about this winery. We came on a winter's day and found comfort in the small tasting room. The tasting room isn't much to look at with a tasting counter that fits four, and nothing much else. The hosts are friendly enough, especially the winery dog who sits in the tasting room on cold days. This winery is so homey. I love the natural, rustic atmosphere. I felt like I was in Italy. It was very old world. It was all about the wine for them and I really like that. The wines were complex and low in alcohol which was a plus. The prices are super resonable. The only downside is that this wine is not available anywhere but at the winery. Its not far for me to go since I live in san francisco but visitors from other parts of the country will want to stock up. Gordon was very attentive to us and gave us the breakdown of the wines and taught us a thing or two. I loved that he didn't pressure us to finish any quicker, instead he was patient. He suggested a wine for us to enjoy at the end, which was the Port. You'll definitely get some delicious white chocolate to pair with it! Yum! The only thing that could complete this place would be a banjo-playin' wheat-eatin' dude in overalls sitting on the back porch as you walk up to this place...but not in a Deliverance sort of way. In an old ma' and pa' sort of way. Non-pretentious, but an all around fun place to be. Tiny little bar inside, but great for smaller groups. Chill place, nice wine selection, and all the tastings are *free* (yes!). I never knew I really liked Zin very much until I had theirs. I was pretty much blown away by it, and am now a proud owner of a bottle of it! The server we had sat with us and chatted and suggested wines to try. Very friendly service and delicious wines. I have to say I was very disappointed. I appreciate the fact that it is a smaller and more intimate winery, but the service was horrible. We where with a group that was apparently "late" so we (the members of the group) got the schoddy service for it. I felt very rushed and as if they had better things to do than serve us.
