We have "lunched and dinner-ed" quite often the past 5 months at the Homestead, having not been at the place in quite some time. New owners, new bar set up.... and yet the same cozy and comfortable welcome hits right when you walk in the door. We ALWAYS try to patronize local offerings, we do ! It is difficult to put to paper negative comments; however, honest reviews are what guide many choices. Our meals have been fine - but for $57 for my husband and I (no frills added!), it is startling that the cost is so elevated. Having read many reviews here, I wonder if we are at the same restaurant! A sampling: huge portions, excellent prices, great service, awesome food. We HAVE certainly been met with incredible service no matter if we are there for breakfast, lunch or dinner - and have so enjoyed meeting the owner and other staff. Which brings even greater angst in penning this. Our food is - most often - okay; but nothing as words present, and it is disappointing more often than not to have a meal that is (certainly) well=cooked, but does not a satisfying "oh my goodness" this is delicious sigh. I hope that the Homestead stays with us a long while... but not without changes. Until then, we will wave when we drive by the Homestead rather than turning into the parking lot for dinner! read more

Another dinner out while we vacation in Narragansett RI. We drove 20 minutes to this restaurant. Plus side: Menu was extensive Server Moderate prices Food was three stars. The Calamari appetizer was okay. The coating was not batter like which is good. Two of us ordered the Baked Food Combo for $25.95. It was large but mediocre. Quantity over quality. The stuffed clam lacked flavor and was just bread crumbs. The scallops were tiny and tasted as if they were frozen variety. The stuffed shrimp were good but the stuffing was not seasoned. The stuffed flounder was okay. The tossed salad was good but the "white" chowder was disappointing: flavorless watered down base and few clam bits. Bland food. My SIL ordered the meatloaf and did not like the chunks of green pepper in it. My daughter ordered the pasta with seafood which again lacked flavor because of no spices. The children liked their burgers and fries. The restaurant appeared to cater to the rural locals who were present, but many tables were empty at 6:15 on a Wednesday night in early July. I've been a customer since they first opened. It used to be my favorite place. Giving three stars for the OG bartenders and waitstaff because they always go above and beyond to keep you happy. The food for the most part has gone way downhill. They've made changes to a lot and not in a good way. Prices are very high now for the lack of quality food and taste. Too many dishes don't taste as good as the original. If you're going to make major changes to an established restaurant then it should be a positive experience not one that leaves you wondering why you're continuing to give them another chance. I probably won't be going back for quite a while. Hoping the feedback makes a difference to the new owners. read more

I my opinion, the food was ok, not to my liking. I purchased "The Squatch," and my husband got the cinnamon roll french toast w/chicken-fried steak. The Squatch was very bland, no flavor, no taste at all. The alfredo sauce is what makes the meal, but it still was not up to my standards for the price that you pay. Now my husband enjoyed has meal 100%, so maybe I will have to try something else and give another review. Now the huge cinnamon rolls that are on display are a must; I did purchase one on my way out, and it did not disappoint, very soft and tasty. The food was good! Went for a Sunday breakfast meeting friends. Short wait, staff very nice. They were busy and we had to ask for a refill of coffee No one checked on us at all, it was 40 min and we asked a young girl to see if she could find our waitress we just needed a refill of coffee, she said ok, it was another 10 minutes and we flagged down the owner ? He immediately poured us coffee. Food came out probably another 10 minutes after that . Come to find out our waitress ended up having a party of like 15 so she was overwhelmed . Maybe just a bit more staff for breakfast crowd or someone just checking on the tables . Food was good and I will for sure go back . Maybe not a Sunday morning ;) read more

We had ~20 mins to kill with our train being delayed and wanted to quickly grab food and a beer. The bartender David rushed us our order, got us set up with to go boxes, and proactively closed us out since we were in a rush. Homestead has been a family favorite since Matt first opened the place! Hearing that they had a new owner we decided to visit and see what has changed. We weren't disappointed; they've kept all the old favorites and had an interesting list of specials. Knowing there was a new chef I thought I'd try items off the Specials menu. The Calamari Olio was delicious !! There was a great ratio of tomatoes, olives and peppers to the calamari. The rings themselves were cooked to perfection; I'd definitely order it again! Corn chowder and clam chowder were great as always. My husband went for the fried scallops served with fries and slaw. It was just as good as always. I tried the chicken piccata with potato and veggie. It was scrumptious!! I dare so it was so flavorful that I don't think it even needed the breading on the chicken. The servers, as always, are super friendly, efficient and add to the dining experience. The kitchen was a bit backed up but it's an all new back house staff and I have no doubt they will have it together in short order. Don't let reviews about the place being a local hangout serving 'comfort food' dissuade you from making the drive. The homey atmosphere, the front staff service and the food itself make it worth the drive! We will definitely continue to keep The Homestead in our list of places to dine! read more

We were in the area and my mother in law recommended we come here for the fish and chips. During the pandemic, they have the table set up with every other one blocked, so social distancing was enforced. We got the fish and chips....and OMG...what a great choice. The fish was nicely done, hot and crispy. The fries were crispy and not too salty, just right. My husband got the Italian sandwich and it was good...but definitely the thing to get here is the fish and chips....one of the best I've had in RI. The staff seemed a bit overwhelmed, even though the restaurant was not too packed when we arrived. Overall service was fair. I asked if they had WiFi and they said yes, but we don't know the password....that is the reason for the 4 stars vs 5. To be customer focused and customer friendly, the restaurant needs to be transparent about their free internet and make sure the waiters can pass on the password to customers who request it. A nice simple not pretentious restaurant. Pricing is considerably less than other restaurants. Almost funny, like 5 years ago pricing. Hope the owner doesn't read this. Have been there three times. Always good. It is concerning how much they have on the menu. Can it all be a home run. I always get the opinion of the server. Stopped here just before closing on our way home from Galilee. Three of us got the fish and chips and one got the stuffed chicken parm. Chowder was a little on the thin side but with lots of potatoes. The fish was light and crispy which is just how we like it. Chicken parm was stuffed with ham, feta, and black olives and was very tasty! The service was excellent, Sybil was very bright and cheery and was attentive and friendly. Just had breakfast at the Homestead, had the biscuits and gravy platter and my husband had the fresh veggie omelette both were delicious and came out really hot which I love. They also have gluten free options. Priced very reasonable and large portions. read more

We've passed by this little restaurant countless times over the years as we sped to and fro between North Kingstown and South Kingstown and never once stopped in (although we kept reminding ourselves that "sometime, we should try it ...") Well, on the way back from a hiking expedition, lunch-time beckoned, and being chilled and hungry, Homestead looked warm and inviting. And so it was! Friendly service, dining room decked out for the holidays, we settled in near the hearth (which sadly wasn't aflame) and enjoyed a good lunch. I started with the clam chowder (happily, a proper Rhode Island milk chowder, not those thick touristy Boston-style chowders) which was hot and deliciously "clammy"; then followed with a good old-fashioned tuna salad sandwich with fresh-cut fries. Yum! My wife had their veggie wrap and it was packed full with nicely cooked and varied vegetables. AND the prices were reasonable! read more

I understand that this establishment changed hands recently which may account for the issues that happened to my family tonight. It took a very long time for us to get service, it wasn't because our waitress wasn't paying attention but I'm guessing that they were short staffed. My issue was that I ordered appetizers for my kids and my parents and I and the wait from the time we finished our apps and the time we received our entrees was about 45-50 minutes. My kids and I were no longer hungry. I did not order both entrees and appetizers at the exact same time but only about 5 minutes apart. My kids, ages 7&8 boxed up our dinners and went home. My parents wanted to stay. I will give this place another chance but it won't be for a few months. read more

I enjoyed my first visit to the Homestead last evening while eating the best fish and chip dinner I've ever had. The fish was flounder,which is a nice light fish,battered in a light batter and fried to a nice crisp. There were 3 filets and up on seeing them thought I wouldn't make it through. Before I knew it they were gone! I substituted the fries for sweet potato fries and they were terrific as was the cold slaw. The service was outstanding. Be sure to ask for Dawn. Oh, and my two accomplices had already been there many times and continued to enjoy the experience. With an excellent fare at decent prices, I very much recommend the Homestead. read more

I never used to like this place, but now it's my favorite. Chicken Monterey is awesome and a must try is their baked-stuffed shrimp. There bean side salad is delicious as well as their carrots, zucchini in marinara, coleslaw, and broccoli. There Clear Clam Chowder is SOOO GOOD! The food was so good I forgot to take a picture. I got the grilled chicken (peppercorn flavor) with cucumber salad and garlic mashed potatoes. For my soup, I chose their soup of the day -- pork barley. The grilled chicken was so tender, and had that flavor from a grill. It was so aromatic, and the peppercorn sauce they lightly drizzle on top gives the perfect compliment to the dish. This restaurant is supposed to give you homestyle cooking and that's exactly what it gave me. The potatoes were fresh, a little lumpy but smooth down your throat with a light garlic flavor. I chose to put mushroom gravy on mine and it was something I wish I could've had more of. The cucumber salad is cold cucumber drenched in watered down mayonnaise. The flavor was great for a hot summers day, but it might not look the best. Coming to this restaurant reminds me of going back down South and trying grandmas food.
