In our experience, the communication was unprofessional and unnecessarily alarming. We felt information was presented in a way that created fear and pressure for more tests and labs, instead of giving clear, balanced guidance. Thankfully our first baby was healthy, but we experienced the same pattern again during the second pregnancy. Pregnancy is already emotional and stressful. Patients deserve compassion, respect, and honest communication -- not to feel like they are being treated as an invoice. We are seriously considering filing a formal complaint with the medical board.

Sure - we had read a lot and had additional support to help us get ready, but with Modern Mama, we found a professional who specializes in exactly what we needed - "what does good look like?" / "what should we be doing?" / "what are we doing right/ wrong?" From the moment that Kristin walked into our door, we were met with a calm and welcoming presence that shared recommendations for getting to sleep, eat, and dressed appropriately. She shared with us what most parents do and what is truly a choice for us. What's more, she was an incredible support for my wife who was breastfeeding for the first time, encouraging her and helping her to establish appropriate techniques and set her up with pumping appropriately, which would have taken us weeks without the support. Lastly, Kristin also followed up with us multiple times after the nights that she had stayed, seeing how we were doing and following up with great resources tied to the questions that we had + other professionals that could help with some of the areas that we were looking to develop. We'd highly recommend the support from Modern Mama and specifically Kristin as a doula for and first time parents - I truly believe they were a primary reason for us to start off on the right foot at home. During transition and pushing, she offered guidance and support that was helpful in those intense final hours. I do believe she understands birth well and brings expertise to the room. That said, there were a few things that did not sit right with me. At multiple points during contractions, when I looked up, she was visibly on Facebook and Instagram. I understand that long labors can involve downtime, but she was only physically present at the hospital for a few hours during transition and pushing. Given the relatively short window of in person support, it felt disappointing and inappropriate that she was on social media during that time. It made me feel like she was not fully present in such a vulnerable moment. There were also moments where her reactions felt disproportionate, such as when the toilet water unexpectedly splashed up. Her response heightened the situation rather than helping me feel grounded and calm. In addition, I found the overall value of the package to be underwhelming compared to other doulas I interviewed. Many offered formal childbirth classes (which were extra through MM) and ongoing support groups as part of their services, whereas Modern Mama primarily offered monthly mini classes on rotating topics, which did not always feel directly relevant or comprehensive. For the investment, I had expected more structured education and support. Though I was appreciative of the nice photos that were included. I am grateful for her knowledge and the role she played in helping bring my baby into the world, but I do wish the level of presence, professionalism, and overall value had been stronger throughout the experience. I likely won't hire Modern Mama again although I don't have experience with the other doulas.

Morgann and Deidra have been such an incredible foundation to our birth team and we couldn't ask for better midwives to help us bring our first baby into this world. We felt so loved, supported, informed, and empowered throughout our experience to make the best choices pre and postnatal for myself, our family, and our sweet baby girl. In the midst of a very long, first labor Morgann gave me some of the best motherhood insight I think I'll ever receive-- she encouraged introspective thinking and gently guided me in knowing and trusting in my own "mother's intuition" vs personal anxiety/fear. This insight helped me make a tough choice to choose an intervention I hadn't wanted initially (breaking my waters), but ultimately was the right choice for me and my daughter, Ruby to finally progress our labor and deliver her despite my own anxiety over how it may intensify labor which already felt overwhelming. Our conversation around this was quiet, loving, gentle, compassionate and had zero pressure. It still brings me to tears to think about and I'll cherish it forever! Morgann is not just a medical support, she has celebrated in our joy, she has been a shoulder to cry on (in labor and in postpartum as my husband struggled with life threatening medical issues), she's given clarity, choice and informed consent, and she's no-nonsense direct when it's needed (like when our baby decided at 39 weeks to be breech for a bit!). Interesting experience yesterday when I called and made an appointment for the next day due to a…read morebad cough with congestion. I was offered a video visit but declined since I had already made an appointment. A little while later I got a call from someone I thought was a triage nurse but was actually the nurse practioner. So I didn't state all the symptoms and saved some for the nurse practioner visit the next day. Later I got a call from the office staff asking if I wanted to keep the appointment tomorrow since I had a video visit. I informed her that I was not aware that it was a video visit since I had already declined the video visit earlier and kept the appointment. She seemed surprised. I called back later and canceled the appointment. Someone had also called about my labs which I know have multi abnormal values and I declined reviewing them stating I was seeing someone in person tomorrow and she can go over them then. So, I guess I won't know what to do about the abnormal lab results as well. Needless to say I wont be returning due to the bumbling staff and the risk of things going sour the next time I attempt to see a nurse practioner. Disappointing since I planned on continuing to go there but now I won't be returning which probably don't really matter to them.

She supported me again in 2010, and most recently the end of 2018. Every experience, while each very different, has been exactly what I needed at the time. She has the calming, grounding energy I so need in my birth space. Her desire to share any information and education we ask for, and support us in whatever our decision, has made my journey into motherhood more peaceful than I could have imagined.
