Today was the 2nd time Dr. Scott saved me from a world of pain. My old crown fell off and the tooth was piercing into my cheek which hurt for 2 whole days and I could barely eat anything at all, it was so painful I could barely sleep. I called them and they said I could come in the next morning. They fixed it in an hour with a new crown and now 12 hours later I feel 100% perfect again and I can chew on both sides which is a miracle with absolutely 0 pain, not even a tooth ache after a root canal, wow ! This is the 2nd time in a row they did this for me, the last time crowns fell out on the other side about 6 months ago and was causing huge tooth ache almost till I was tearing up and crying. They fixed that one also 100% within the next day after calling. I have beeb a patient of Dr. Holyoak for quite some time. Not any more. On my last visit, I was told I needed a new crown. I provided my new insurance information and was told the proceedure would be covered 50%. So, I booked the appointment, had my crown fixed, paid my half of the bill ($900) and was told insurance would take care of the rest. My inurance refused to pay because of a "waiting period". The doctor's staff said my insurer made a mistake. In fact, Dr. Holyoaks office staff did not read the terms of my inurance correctly as there was a waiting period for coverage. They told me "too bad" and made me pay an additional $900. I complained directly to Dr. Holyoak and he said, "sorry you have to pay" ! I am done with him and his sloppy offic estaff. read more

I've been a patient of Dr. Holyoak until mid 2019, followed him from his Oceanside practice. I used to have great great respect for this Doctor. NOT ANYMORE. I should have posted his review sooner. In 2018 I had some crowns made. Before the procedure I provided them with my insurance information and I was told I needed to pay $1300 and my insurance will pay the rest. I hate surprises so before the procedure I called them a few times and they confirmed my copay is still the same. Each time I called I asked that they double check with my insurance and let me know if there are any changes. The day of the procedure before I paid my copay I again confirmed and was told the same. After a few months I got a bill from Dr. Holyoak for $1300. I called and was told that my Insurance denied the claim. I called a few times to appeal and the "used to be" nice, caring people at the Dental Office were cold and NOT willing to help and accept that they screwed up. This includes Dr. Holyoak. I talked to him and explained what happened and all he can say was he's sorry. There was no compassion. I paid the bill but after that incident, I felt so disgusted with the Doctor I once truly respected. I moved on and charged everything that happened to KARMA. read more

I am one of the rare few who actually love going to the dentist but Dr Holyoak and his staff are pretty incredible - even for those who fear dentist visits. Here's why: 1. Easy Booking: It is super easy to book an appt using the online booking system. I never have time to call and this allows you to do it on your own time. It helps you find available times and then sends you reminders and confirmations. 2. Friendly staff: Never have I been in a office that is not only friendly to patients but to each other. You can tell they are a work family and appreciate each other. I love seeing that...esp when metal objects are scraping my teeth. It's comforting. :) 3. Very happy with Dr. Holyoak. He's not pushy, he's always happy and upbeat. After braces, I took our teenage kids to Holyoak for Invisalign retainers. These are very nice to have to keep the teeth straight and also use for occasional bleaching. I also had a (minimal) 6-tray Invisalign treatment to slightly move crowding lower teeth. I've had quite a few dentists in my time, and most of them use their office as a means to sell and upsell cleanings into braces, whitening and other services. I don't want this. No one wants this. Luckily, after coming to Encinitas Family Dentistry, I got the cleaning I wanted and no sales pitch. The hygienists are the finest crew I've had clean my teeth, and Dr. Holyoak is friendly and easy to discuss dental requirements with. I returned to the office twice in two weeks to get deep cleanings done, and despite my irrational fear of needles, was able to get through the process without weeping like a baby (it ended up being really easy thanks to the aforementioned fantastic hygienists). Obviously going to the dentist is never really a pleasure, but going to Dr. Holyoak's office could best be described as not that bad (which is at the very top of enthusiasm that is humanly possible for going to the dentists office). read more

I came in for to be fitted for a take home teeth whitening kit and I have to say that I am really impressed with the staff. Michelle (front desk and/or office manager) and Patty (???...sorry if I don't have the name right) are very professional and genuinely warm people. I didn't meet the dentists but their staff reflects VERY well on them. Let's start with location. Unless you know what you're looking for, the smallish building is easy to miss. The office itself doesn't look like much from the outside but as soon as you walk in, everything feels comfortable and welcoming. My previous dentist's office in Downtown SD was very modern--lots of steel, concrete and high ceilings--cool to look at but it didn't exactly emanate the warm fuzzy feeling that Encinitas Family Dentistry effortly does. At first I was told that I would have to pick up my custom-fit trays the day after, but after taking the time to find out that I live over 30 miles away, Patty asked if I could hang around nearby (she suggested a mall not too far away) for the next hour or so while she does a rush job on the trays. Of course I gladly said yes! So after 40 minutes of browsing at H&M, Urban Outfitters, and Anthropologie, I went back to pick up my trays. They were ready right on time! Patty spent time making sure that my trays fit and counseled me on how to use them. By the way, I got one of those Buy With Me deals (kind of like Groupon but more obscure), but not once did they make me feel less important than if I paid the full $300 for the service. And not once was I asked any questions unrelated to teeth-whitening. No hard upsell here! My appointment was for 11 AM and I was seen promptly at 11 AM...gotta love that! I am even considering going back to them for my regular dentistry work. On one hand, I have 2 little kids that would require longer time with the sitter because the the dental office is so far from me. On the other hand, I have never been to a dental office that didn't make me feel like they're just tacking on unnecessary work to inflate the bill. I have a feeling that I will be back. This dentist happens to be within walking distance of my house and they take my insurance. I had tried one other dentist in the area, but they were not awesome,so I was in search of a new one. After my first dentist, I knew my teeth had found their new home. Admittedly, I had waited too long between appointments, but no worries, hygentist Kathy (Cathy?) fixed me right up and my teeth were sparkly clean after a visit. It wasn't exactly comfortable, but she was entertaining and held a one-sided conversation to keep my mind off the discomfort. Dr. Holyoak is great too and very friendly. I've had the unfortunate experience of having a cavitity filled, but it was very fast and great work. I am usually sent home with a small travel kit, which is a nice bonus. They are always on time, within 5 minutes of my scheduled appointment, and very very thorough. I highly recommend this dentist office. read more

UPDATE: Over a month from the "fillings" and still in a lot of pain. Now I need to wait out COVID before I feel comfortable finding another dentist. I'm not upset that they feel "uncomfortable" I'm upset that I have sharp pain where I had none before. He also pushed the whitening multiple times after I said I wasn't interested - and I never inquired about it in the first place. I tired to go in and have him fix it but he said there was nothing he could do. I stand my ground. read more

Worst experience ever. If I could give negative stars I would, Needed a root canal and was given 5-7 different invoices with different estimates each time. Showed up to the appointment and was turned away because I questioned the price (which was different than what was told before the going in) Very unprofessional, not sure how they conduct business like this but would 100% recommend you get a second opinion from another dentist and compare the results so they don't rip you off like what they were trying to do for me. I took it as a sign that I probably would've had problems down the road with the tooth and was best for me to not have him operate on me. My advice, avoid this dental office all together. I was really pleased with my visit to Holyoak Dental. Lydia at the front desk was pleasant and kind in person ( JUST like she was by phone). Rosemarie , the hygenist was very pleasant, and did a great job of explaining to me what was coming next, what she was looking for. I just felt like I always knew what was about to happen, which was great. She took X Rays, shared with me what she saw, and then moved me to another room for Dr. Holyoak to come in and review. I did not see the dentist, but am disturbed by the unprofessionalism of the staff. When I called to make my appointment, I was told the office accepts my insurance and is within my network. After I arranged for childcare for my 3 kids and drove 25 minutes to get to the office, they then told me they do not take my insurance and am actually out of the network. They should have called to inform me of this mistake since this was clearly known beforehand! Apparently their financial profit is more important than my time and inconvenience. I would be wary of a practice that is misleading and inconsiderate towards their patients. read more

When I called to schedule an emergency appointment for a broken tooth, I was told he had a new practice and that I would have to see someone else. I declined and found his new office on the internet. When I called, I was greeted by Tilley. She was beyond helpful and very caring. She was able to get me in immediately and had everything I needed waiting when I got there. I am new to SD and relied on yelp to find a new dentist. My first shot at it scared me! Ultra tech office with all sorts of streamlined gadgets and gizmos and after my 'new patient evaluation' - aka almost 2 hours in a chair - I was told I needed a LOT of work, which they would do in stages: a couple of cavities, old crowns needing replacement, decay under onlays that would need new crowns, etc. This freaked me out as I religiously get my check ups and didn't think so much could go wrong in 6 months. After a couple nights tossing and turning, decided to get a 2nd opinion and went back to yelp. I found Dr. Holyoak and he was exactly what I was looking for - knowledgable, up to date, but not overwhelming. After his evaluation, all I needed was one tiny cavity filled, which he did on the spot; I didn't need to make another appointment. He was an upbeat dentist with interesting stories that I thought would hold my son's interest, so immediately booked him an appointment for the following week, and he liked him, too (as much as a 15 yr old can like a dentist!) Jump forward 6 months and I just had my first official cleaning and checkup and, lo and behold, I still don't need any more work done.
