Amazing and creative bbq! I usually get the hand pulled smoked chicken sandwich and it is fantastic every time. My husband has ranged everything from their signature Hot Dog to the Hog burger and more and it is probably the most delicious heart attack you'll ever have :) It's a lot of food, but really tasty and well priced. It's a hole in the wall type of place and gets very busy, so if you want to eat in on a weekend night you will probably wait for a while. But, you can call in take-out and it is just as great and will cut down on your wait times. They have a range of beers and homemade drinks, served in mason jars, and a full bar in their tiny restaurant. Very tasty, well priced and creative bbq style... Bring your appetite! read more

I've eaten here more than a dozen times in the last 6 months and I still haven't made it to the barbecue yet! Their sandwiches keep calling my name when I'm reading the menu. The chicken sandwiches are just excellent. The steak and cheese is my favorite in town as well. It's so nice that the owners get it. They get it from so many levels. They understand that people want seasoning and flavors. We eat at restaurants more than most and the one thing that seems be lacking from most places is flavor. Not here. Their food actually has flavor. It's just great tasting food. The sweet potato fries with the maple dipping sauce is the best I have ever eaten. How often do you say that after eating somewhere? Not too often. The wait staff is quite friendly and they don't seem to be locked into the "That's not my table" attitude that you see at most places. Honestly, this is one of the only places I've ever eaten that gets it. If you pay attention to the customers and the food, then you'll succeed. This place is proof of that. Great job Hogs Head! I feel so lucky to have this place so close to my apartment! The sandwiches are delicious. The portions are huge. Definitely enough for awesome leftovers. Their mac and cheese is amazing and I definitely recommend it as a side dish! It's a small place that gets full pretty quick so keep that in mind. It's definitely worth the wait though. Read the rave reviews about this restaurant and decided to give it a try. I was very disappointed. We did a to go order and had to wait 1.5 hours, but after reading the reviews... we thought it was worth it. I had the ribs and it was way too smokey all I could taste was smoke, and still have the smoke smell on my hands hours later. We had the mac n cheese as the side and it had a cardboard taste not a real mac n cheese. I did give it two stars as my mom enjoyed her hot dog and the corn pudding and limeade was good. read more

Had the pleasure of going there today....It's our favorite BBQ Restaurant. Took a friend with us today and she loved it as well. I love the pulled pork sandwich less bread and my sister tried the Cuban for the first time and loved it. Our friend tried the pulled pork sandwich and loved it . We first heard about Hogshead in the Weekender and from that first visit it was a huge hit for everyone who I have taken there for lunch. I personally think this is the BEST BBQ in Richmond! Everything I have tried from here has been awesome. And the portions are so big you can almost count on taking some leftovers home with you! The owners and workers are very friendly and they always remember you when you come in and you just feel like you're at home when you walk in! The only thing that I wish they would work on is trying to expand to fit more seats in because if you do not get there early then you will certainly be waiting. I will be honest, the food is amazing but customer service was absolutely horrible!! My office goes for lunch/dinner almost daily and I opt to always pick up the meals. That being said i come in contact with almost all the near restaurants regularly. Every time I go to hogshead the service is so terrible i refuse to spend my money in there. It's not so much long wait etc. but more so the attitude of the staff is absurd. Completely RUDE has been my experience!! I have never filled out a review online but after the horrible service I just received yet again I felt compelled to. This place can be summed up in two words ... heavy handed. From the décor to the grease encrusted food, this is the joint to hit when your doctor tells you your cholesterol numbers are just too low (hah). The fried green tomatoes were overcoated and cooked to a such a hardness I feared for my dental work. Shrimp po' boy and oyster po' boy were cooked much the same way and swaddled in a huge bland bun. OMG I just died and ended up in meat heaven. After hearing nothing buy amazing things about this place, the hubs and I finally hit up this place. Its a pretty small restaurant, but if its packed on a Wednesday night, you know its going to be good. First of all I appreciate any place that serves me a beverage, especially alcoholic, in a mason jar. After staring at the menu trying to figure out what meaty goodness we wanted to try, we decided to split the Hog Sampler which includes 1/2 a rack of baby back ribs and 1/2 lb pulled pork. For sides with had the Mac and Cheese, the Squash Casserole and the hushpuppies. The ribs were fall off the bone tender, and the pulled pork was juicy. They offer two sauces, the hog sauce and a yummy carolina sauce that both pair perfectly with the meat (i like to mix the two together). The sides were amazing and the hushpuppies were the best I've ever had. But the star had to be the squash. Either way, i'll be back. My first review is below. I went back today to get food since their food is fantastic. One of the owners came and spoke to me about the concerns I had mentioned in my previous review. She did alleviate some of my concerns. She told me the issues with the odd closures had been fixed and offered to let me tour the kitchen. I am glad they care about what people think.She informed me that their first priority was keeping the same quality food, so this is understandable. The waitresses do work hard and are friendly but the place is still pretty crazy. Unfortunately she did tell me that they will probably remain in the same location for at least the next year. The place is pretty crazy and small, but the food is great and it is family run which are two good things in my book. So, I will probably continue to go but I will reserve a 5 star rating until they are able to get a bigger location and stop running out of food. I do understand opening a family restaurant can be challenging and I may have been quick to leave a bad review after this mornings issues but it is my hope that things will run smoother the longer they stay open because even after all this annoyance I still went back today because their food really is that good. "The food was great but the service so bad I will never go back. Closed Sunday, ok fine, but then it was closed two different Mondays I went. I just called today to order a quart of BBQ right after they opened and I was told I could not order that b/c they had too many catering orders today to let me BUY a quart of BBQ, that was the last straw for me. We had been meaning to come here for some time, but we avoid Broad Street, and specifically the western part of it, like the plague. At the urging of a yelper who saw my list of wings places, we finally made a point of visiting. I am certain of two things about this place: It is popular as all get out for lunch -- it's a small room, so if you arrive in the middle of the lunch hour you better have either a lot of time to wait or an alternate destination. Also, it's a manly man's menu. As for the wings, they are absolutely bathed in sauce, so if you like that then fine, but I don't, and it is BBQ-based sauce, so it's sugary and sticky, also not my thing. However, the fiery wings are indeed quite hot, so if you go place to place looking for extremely, perhaps insanely hot wings, give it a shot. The wings also are whole wings, so when you order a half dozen, it's the equivalent of a dozen wings at a regular place where they are already segmented. The chili is good, rich and spicy, but the beef is as finely ground as hot dog chili, so the mouth feel could be a damn site better. The hushpuppies are OK as Virginia hushpuppies go; at least they aren't sweet like cake. We haven't had the barbecue yet, but we saw plenty, and it sure looks good. read more

Hogshead is a great place to eat barbecue. A couple things that set them apart are their sweet potato fries and their FRESH limeade. You may be hesitant or tempted to get the regular fries or chips, but don't these are really really good. The limeade is really great; very fresh tasting, and goes great with pork sandwiches. This has been on our radar screen to try for a while now, and we finally stopped on a rainy day last weekend. Tiny location, so we had a few minutes' wait for a table. That gave us time to read over the chalkboard list of specials. Generous portions and a depth of offerings far beyond the advertised barbecue. The sides alone are worth the trip - I had a delicate scalloped potato dish that was seasoned deftly. The meal was such a highlight I went back the next week for lunch, aiming for a plate of sides. Again, the chalkboard included some compelling soup options, so defaulted to a shrimp-and-corn chowder and caesar (all dressings are house made). The side is like the sampler cups you get at Costco and they are free, Hogshead cost $.99 for a taste of slaw. The bbq should come with slaw and it not be a side. Since moving to Richmond, I have not been impressed with the BBQ choices. That finally changed when HogsHead opened. When I lived in Tampa, there was a place called First Choice BBQ in an unassuming strip mall next to a Home Depot. The BBQ would melt in your mouth, and I even think I saw a few people crying (happily) after eating there. The BBQ at HogsHead is as close as I have come to that. We popped in for lunch based on Yelp reviews and we were SO happy we did! This is a small place that packs a huge punch! MDP and I tried chili and corn and shrimp soup, both of which were excellent. My pulled pork nachos were not only delicious, but absolutely gorgeous! There were so many layers of flavor and the plate would easily feed 3! MDP's hot dog was good and side of Loaded Baked Potato Salad was so good! Topped it off with homemade blackberry cobbler, just delish. Don't miss this one when you're in Richmond. read more

We couldn't have been more disappointed--especially because of all the Yelp reviews. I won't go into the bizarre system used for waiting for a table--still seemed random-- and it was a really cold wait outside. Once we were seated, my husband commented that he didn't smell any bbq smoke--which Should have been a red flag--but we were lured by all the Yelp reviews and the place was packed inside and out. One thing the reviews did not lie about was the quantity of food. We ordered the nachos and sampler platter to split. The hush puppies were 4 stars (husband would give them 3), cole slaw was 5 stars. The pulled pork was not good--steamed cardboard with a hint of clove? The ribs were gross--liquid smoke flavored with a hint of cloyingly sweet sauce that did nothing to alleviate the overpowering liquid smoke flavor--NOT a substitute for hickory smoking the meat. I believe the texture of the rib meat was good but I only ate the little rib on the end of the rack. The nachos were 5 stars:nice presentation, tri- colored chips, chopped tomatoes had good flavor, real cheese (but not too much of it), lettuce, drizzle of sour cream. The pulled pork on it was a detraction (-1 star). The best part of the nachos was the chili--flavorful, nice heat. Bottom line? Don't go expecting bbq--in fact, AVOID the pulled pork and the ribs.
