Always been good but in the last 2 months not so. 1 st time they got the milk shake wrong, ordered no lettuce but got it anyway, and the waitress reminded me she was kinda busy!! What a huge disappointment. Our first time at Hogan's was an absolute let down. No senior, "lighter fare" or half order options on the menu. $3.29 for the worst tasting, extremely watered down coffee we've ever had. Food arrived ridiculously fast---but somehow was cold, as if it had been sitting for quite some time---? So that was concerning. Our over medium eggs had cold, raw, watery yolks---toast was cold, biscuits and gravy were all barely lukewarm. As we attempted to eat our cold and partially raw breakfast, we suddenly realized we ordered sausage gravy----but there wasn't any sausage. Correction....I poked around and found TWO tiny nuggets of "sausage" each about the size of a pencil eraser. The biscuits were reminiscent of canned refrigerator Grands....flat, gummy and tasteless. The "sausage" gravy was pasty and horrible....and no doubt straight from a #10 can. The 3 eggs and toast breakfast for $8.49 got us 3 of the tiniest (cold and extremely under cooked) eggs and ONE SMALL piece of toast! No joke....the eggs looked like quail eggs---basically one-biters. One egg on the ala carte menu is $1.99......so that means ONE SMALL 3 inch PIECE of cold toast is $2.50? I'm sorry---I realize food prices have gone up and businesses have had to charge more---but come on! There's no way your cold, under cooked, canned food----and ridiculously small portion sizes are anywhere close to being worth what you're charging. We would gladly pay a little more----for hot, quality food, cooked to order and served in decent portions. Hogan's missed the mark all around. Just plain and simply NOT GOOD. read more

Floors had food spilled and yuck in corners. Filthy! I have eaten here many times and I noticed a big change in the cleanliness.

Ordered Fish and chips and the fish was mushy. Breakfast burrito had wrong type of meat/sauce that was ordered and was pretty gross. The chicken fried steak and eggs was just ok but over priced. American grease spoon diners are my favorite and that's exactly what this is! I've been here a couple of times now and if you know what to expect this place is great. At different times during the day you will notice the sign to seat yourself or a waitress will seat you. Locals treat this sign with little concern -- if there is a booth or seat at the counter open, they will swoop in on it with little regard to people who may have been waiting. The diner is a mad dash of organized chaos, the waitresses are constantly tending to tables, and the open kitchen doesn't stop for a moment with a constant flow of orders being cooked and prepped. The shotgun willie breakfast is a cholesterol topped carbohydrate behemoth that is a force to be reckoned with. There are three layers - biscuits and gravy at the bottom, a boat load of hash browns on top of that, then basically an omelet with veges, sausage, bacon, and a mount of cheese topping off this calorie packed amazing dish. Then they add a big jalapeño as garnish for good measure. The service is fair - the waitresses are always on the move, trying to keep things moving; they can get overwhelmed when it's packed. I would not recommend this place if you are a strict vegetarian. Your food will come in contact with meat - watching the cooks, asparagus was cooked in the same oil as chicken tenders - then placed in the warming area with bacon. Personally, this doesn't effect me but I wanted to throw that out there. I will be coming back often. read more

I love the atmosphere, it would be nice if they used a glass barrier between the sides for noise. They are a bit expensive for the food that you get, but that most likely is because they are on the South Hill. As far as the food goes, it was typical diner food with little care towards preparation, the eggs were over cooked to over hard rather the our requested over medium. The chicken fried steak was well seasoned but had more breading than meat. The bacon was a little over cooked. The pancakes however were AWESOME and the gravy was pretty good as we're the hash browns. The service was friendly and the wait was not bad. read more

I was having my car serviced in Lincoln Heights and walked over to Hogan's to try breakfast. Hogan's goes with a 1950's look décor and is quite roomy. Because of my obesity, I usually have to look hard to find comfortable seating. Hogan's booths and tables account for tubbies like me and seating was a non-issue. The service was fast and very friendly, one of the hallmarks of the South Hill District. I had the eggs benedict, which was good, with generous hollandaise and perfect hash browns. All your traditional Yankee breakfast items are there, but they have some fantastic Hispanic desayuno options as well. Meh.... this place is Okay... when I was young I used to LOVE going here. Back before I understood the value of dollar and was too young to see that some places truly are over rated. This is one of those places to me. The food is not consistent. The only thing reasonably priced is their sams special breakfast menu item. The servers don't go out of their way at all. Don't introduce themselves, Check on you throughout your dining experience, etc... 2 people can't go in and have breakfast without walking out spending at least $50 after gratuity. Expensive juice too. Not even fresh. Many other options for breakfast food on the south Hill now besides just this one. I rarely go here and avoid it as often as possible. I will say the last time I went I had a grilled cheese and it was delicious. But... 9/10 times it's usually rated a 2 at best! Update: it's my 13 year old soles favorite place and we've gone twice in the past couple months. The servers are MUCH friendlier and they do have the best pancakes in town. I still always order the same special. My son ordered a side of sausage this weekend though that came out charred black. Did they not notice they put black sausage on a plate? But I've increased the stars because even though they recently increased prices, the service has been better and the pancakes and French toast are delightful. Getting better Hogan's. Hogan's is a great place for all meals. Very good breakfast, I recommend the Big Bopper if you are very hungry. Lunch items such as burgers and sandwiches are also tasty and come with either fries or salad. I have only eaten dinner there once but it was right in line with breakfast and lunch. Love the classic diner atmosphere, and the employees are always cordial. Great place to go for a weekend meal. However, I cannot give it 5 stars for a couple reasons: first of all, it closes at 2 pm on Sundays. And secondly, I do think the prices are a little too high. I have been going there for a few years, and items which were once $9-10 are now $14-15. I understand inflation and minimum wage increases force businesses to increase prices, but in my opinion these price increases are disproportional to what they should be. Although paying an extra buck or two is not the worst, it does it this case prevent me from giving the full 5 stars. I highly recommend Hogans to anyone looking for a great meal. Great diner with the classic diner styles with red and chrome abounding in the decor. Although located in a strip mall in Lincoln Heights (what's not in a strip mall on the South Hill), it has the feel of your quaint, but hip, neighborhood joint from small town America. For breakfast, I had eggs Benedict, which is what I always try in order to fairly gauge the quality of food at a new place I'm trying. The hollandaise sauce was just the right amount and the right consistency. Ham was good, but I like a thicker slice. Eggs over easy rather than poached. English muffin lightly toasted. Altogether it met my standards as a well-prepared good breakfast. The ambiance is great and it is a good place to take your kids. read more

I saw Hogan's Cafe and thought it was a quaint 50's style cafe. I thought about going there for 3 weeks. Today, I finally stopped. Their menu had a lot to offer especially for breakfast. I ordered the bacon cheese omelette. I was let down. It was full of bacon, the egg was extremely thin and dry, The cheese seemed like an afterthought it was spread lightly on top. The hash browns were extremely hard and dry, they were overcooked there was not much potato in the hash browns just crunchy, dry, overcooked- you could break your teeth on them. The coffee was good. I heard the cook say order up and when the waitress picked up the order he told the waitress the toast was burnt. I had burnt toast before but this was un-edible. When the waitress put it down in front of me she must have seen my face of distain. She asked if I wanted to take back the burnt toast. I said yes. The new toast came; it was good. I was hoping the breakfast would be good at this establishment. I really wanted to like the food but it was a big let down. It wasn't like the cafe was full of people when I walked in there was 3 people eating in the cafe. We watched the cooks work as we browsed the menu, which had a lot of interesting options through out. It is just a diner, but I thought it was a little more creative than your average breakfast joint. I ended up ordering Eggs Lopez which I honestly have to say is my new favorite breakfast in town. Two corn tortillas (very thick, almost like an English muffin) topped with black beans, spinach, and pork, as well as a poached and a delicious spicy hollandaise.
