I'd like to give it 4 or more stars because everything was very good BUT, the prime rib my friend got was only 1/3 edible. He got the 12oz and he and I ( gave me some to try) almost literally gagged on the amount of fat his piece had. The flavor was good but a good portion of it was left on the plate or regurgitated in a napkin. We told the waiter afterwards because he never asked us how anything was. We didn't expect or want any kind of discount. We just felt they should take it off the menu or better yet...buy better quality meat. This place should have been an outstanding experience, but people made it disappointing. We called for a reservation, but they did not accept them. They did ask the size of our party and expected arrival time, which we provided. When we arrived, right on time, the hostess was clearly flustered by our party size (seven). After a short delay, we were seated at table in a place that can only be described as a wide hallway. The only other table in this area of the restaurant had a party of approximately 20. That party was drunk, unruly, obnoxiously loud and foul-mouthed. And they had children with them. Clearly, they were placed in that location with good reason. The food was good, but the menu inflexible. No substitutions. We were told there was only one vegetable option, when we later learned there were several. Hofbrau used to be a solid 3, 3 1/2 and dependable. But tonight's dinner was terrible. Used to be served wonderful cheddar biscuits like at Red Lobster, gone. Used to have a salad served with entrees, gone. The bread we were served was fit for feeding deer, not much else. Ordered Cajun shrimp over linguine, came swimming in oil and no shrimp. Really? There's real competition in the neighborhood and Hofbrau, sadly has dropped in quality. Can no longer recommend it for anything but pizza and beer. Sad. read more

My family loves this place! We have been there several times. We have never had and issues. When we first went, we thought it was too expensive. Then we saw the amount of food. We always have to go boxes. Also, it tastes so good. It is amazing!! Worth every penny. The wait staff is amazing, the beer is amazing and it does not take too long to get food. My children do not even have time to ask "when will dinner be here?" I love this restaurant. My son attends the art school so we go very often. I recommend this to anyone I talk to. read more

What has happened to one of our all-time favorites? This used to be one of our favorite restaurants, but within the last year it seems to be going downhill...especially the service. Yesterday our server forgot things we substituted and never brought them after being reminded. Our bread basket never came, salads came before soups...then they ran out of the soup we ordered. We had to ask for drink refills several times before getting any. We asked for extra plates so we could share, they did not come until we were half way through eating. The food was good (except the black olives are nasty). Last time we were there, my wife ordered a stuffed chicken breast, they brought a grilled chicken breast and couldn't make the stuffed one in a decent amount of time. The time before that, one of our steaks was over cooked. The stories go on and on. They have always taken bad meals off the bill...but we would just like to pay for all our meals and a good experience. It doesn't look like we will be going back... read more

Absolutely great dining experience! Server was Jean, super friendly and attentive. They have a huge selection of draft beers, recommend the Michigan flight which is a steal. Where I could have a dinner that supports an entire day! Although being told unhealthy, I order french fries because the fries here are the best I could find in Traverse City. Over the years we've brought in thousands of dollars to this restaurant by our patronage and the friends we've brought or sent there. It's nearby and the food is good and the atmosphere is pleasing enough. We liked it so much we bought a bunch of gift certificates for the place to give to our friends at Christmas. We kept 1 of those $20 certificates to use ourselves, but because we were in Haiti for most of the year helping with relief efforts, we weren't able to use it right away. We realized after returning to the USA that the certificate had expired earlier that week. We decided to see if they would honor it. We didn't assume they would, but we asked our server (whom we knew) to find out from the manager if they would let us use it or at least give us some small discount. Our happy pleasant server was sure it wouldn't be a problem, but double-checked. She came back and told us the manager wasn't going to let us use it, nor would he even give us a free dessert or $5 discount or anything to indicate our business was desired. The irony of this is that if we would have chosen to interrupt our dinner by playing Euchre, we would have received an even larger discount, but we had wanted to quietly talk and 'debrief' after our time in Haiti. Because we knew our server we didn't want to put her in an awkward position, so we ordered our food anyway and decided we would write a letter to the manager explaining what had happened. My husband took time out of his busy schedule to write a thoughtful letter that detailed what we liked about the place, the business we brought in, and how we weren't looking for a free ride, but would have appreciated knowing our business meant enough to them that they could have at least matched the discount they were offering patrons who played Euchre that night or at least had the manager personally come out to tell us he was sorry but unable to give us a discount. We had our return address and phone numbers in that letter and never heard back. It's been more than 6 months since that incident and now we take our friends to Buds or Boones or somewhere else. It's a shame that this restaurant that is suppose to 'neighborhood friendly' fails so miserably in genuine customer care. read more

This review has no reflection on our server's performance. She was lovely. We were meeting our older son and his girlfriend their to celebrate a special occasion during brunch. As we sat down my son shrieked. "Mom that's gross. I mean really gross", I leaned over to see what caused him so much dismay. What I next saw was a dead mouse lying directly next to our table. The server saw the commotion as everyone at our table was visibly shaken so she came over and looked down at the mouse and then looked up at us. Not missing a beat she took our drink order and seemed to be at a loss for words. Within a few minutes a hostess came with a dust pan and a broom and removed the dead rodent. Then our server returned with the drinks. Obviously we were all very careful of what we ate and honestly our $75 meal (due to it being a Sunday buffet) was ruined. Not one manager came over to apologize or even address the issue. I thought to myself, well they must just be quit embarrassed and when he bill comes the apology would be reflected there. It was not. We have been going there for years and had recommend it often. I will no longer due this. It's a shame it use to be such a nice family place with really great food. The food this day was sub-par and not cheap. It you are going to pay a $15-$16 for bunch don't waste your money here, hit up The Workshop in the warehouse district in Traverse. Went for lunch at 12:10 and sat down to a nearly empty restaurant. We then watched patron after patron be seated and receive their food before we received ours. Being polite at first we didn't say anything, but as nearly an hour went by, and watching others, who came in after us mind you, enjoy their food. We asked our server how long it would be- he kinda blew us off with an "I'll check" and we didn't see him again as now the restaurant was busy. We then spoke to another server who told us sorry, and finally we got our food, at 1:20 and it was cold. So they didn't even bother putting it under the heat lamps. If we weren't one of the firsts to sit down and hadn't seen others come in after us and be served immediately then I wouldn't be writing this review, also there were only 4 of us so it's not as if he was serving a huge party. With expansions came a wider menu selection, nightly specials, fun drink specials, and an impress tap selection. Unfortunately, the prices expanded as well, maybe a little too much. went there last friday after arriving at the sunnywoods campground to have a hefty dinner. first we started with the fried pickle and fried mushrooms. it was divine, the wonton was crispy and the swiss and ham made a nice touch to the pickle. The mushrooms were okay because im not a major fan of this particular vegetable but the other people at the table were enjoying it. For the main course i had the perch, it was deep fried to perfection because it was not overly covered in oil and there homemade sauce was superb.On the other hand, i tried my sister fish and chips and taste as if i was drinking plain oil, which is not a good thing. Also, my brother in law had pasta alfredo but it was missing something really. Personally, the service was not that good, and i think is due to the location of our seating area. Went to hoffbrau recently 3 of us for a couple of beers and a quick bite. Friday night in the dead of winter. They were not very busy at all. It took over 15 minutes to get our first round of drinks after they were ordered. Long story short,, A pizza was ordered, a salad, and an order of bean dip. It took almost a whole hour, and when it came the pizza was wrong, and the bean dip was cold. I've never sent food back in my life, but felt I had no choice, I was so mad from the wait, i totally lost my appetite. complained about the pizza as well being wrong. Our server gave us a piss poor apology at best, we were never offered a free drink, discount or anything. The saddest part about this whole fiasco.. This has happened to me almost every time I go there. But I will not have that problem again, because i will not be back. Shame on me for trying to give a 3rd 4th or 5th chance.. Poor service, very slow, I could almost overlook the higher than average prices if the food and service were good. Had dinner here on Saturday July 5, 2014 with my wife and 6 other friends. The food was good, but an honest mistake by the restaurant was handled very poorly by the Manager. One individual in our party of six had his sandwich that he had ordered dropped on the floor in the kitchen. They sent our waiter (Not His Fault) to explain this and say they were making him another sandwich. After waiting more than a reasonable amount of time, the waiter was sent back out to tell him that they made his second sandwhich, but gave it to someone else (Again not the waiters fault). Finally this customer had to ask for the Manager who came out with a third sandwich that he refused since we were going to be late for our concert at Interlochen Music Camp. Obviously she did not charge him for his lost meal, but she should have not charged his wife also and should have given them a gift certicate for two more meals in the future. As it stands right now the Hofbrau has lost 8 customers. None of us plan to patronize this Restaurant again. read more
