We ordered a large veggie pizza. Really didn't have a lot of flavor and by the time we got it home it was very soggy. When we called in the order they said it was an hour wait. No problem, but I feel the pizza was done maybe in 30 minutes and it sat in the box for the next 30 minutes? It certainly wasn't hot; that should have been our first clue. read more

We were in Benzonia and read about Upriver Pizza. Checked their hours to verify they were open. When we arrived, they were closed. Checked their hours on the door which indicated they should be open. Three other cars pulled up; individuals going up to the door and looking at the posted business hours. Nothing posted to indicate they were closed for a specific reason. Unfortunately, I have experienced this with many different food establishments since COVID. It's a laissez-faire business model: we might be open when we're supposed to be, or we might not. Camping in Manistee and wanted a good NY style thin pizza and checked out the reviews for Upriver Pizza in Benzonia, a 30 min ride from our campground. Nothing but time on our hands, we took a ride, they did not disappoint!! Located in a strip mall, small place, very clean, nice bar to sit at and multiple tables to eat at. Very pleasant employees, sat down and checked out menu and placed order at the counter. Our drinks were delivered to our table along with a small Greek salad, very tasty. Our pizza came in a timely fashion, we ordered a large meat lovers cooked crispy, generous amount of meat and cheese cooked perfectly. Delicious thin crust pizza, really enjoyed it along with the salad. While eating we were able to enjoy live music, perfect timing, 2 young guys playing guitar's and the one singing, really good voice singing Rock Got our bill and the place was really busy, good pizza and good music, cold beer, don't get any better than that! Had the deep dish Detroit pizza yesterday it was very good. Feeling good today so it must have fresh ingredients in the pizza because I don't feel well the next day if the things aren't fresh, I would give it a five star rating. Upriver Pizza is the best pizza you will find. I go there very regularly and have been since it opened. Mark, Jodi, and Chris are top notch people with a true passion for what they do. I feel always welcome and the staff I consider friends. The pizza is so good that I get it a few times a week. Fresh ingredients and home made dough that is truly hand tossed. Three types of pizza crusts they offer, New York style hand tossed (thin crust) American style (pan style) and Detroit style (deep dish). You can't go wrong with any of the choices. Thursdays they do smash burgers which are epic. They do salads,sandwiches and pasta as well. It is my favorite restaurant in the whole area by a long shot! One a Detroit style. Two New York thin crust pizza's. OMG so gooooood. I also ordered there chicken wings which were meh! Yes, it saddened me. But, let's go back to the pizza. Upriver, has the secret from great service, in-house music, and exceptional pizzas. Dip a slice in buffalo sauce and it's love at first bite. First time here and I was pleased! Looks a little shotty from the outside but those are the best food places! Fantastic service. One of the owners is in the back making the pizzas and his wife is one of two bartenders. Everyone was friendly and went out of their way to make sure we had a good experience. Ask the bartender about her "homemade ginger-ale". We got the Large New York style: vodka sauce, feta, pepperoni, basil, garlic, and tomatoes. It came out to roughly $30. A bit pricey but I'm always willing to spend a little extra to get something that actually tastes good. The pizza was made from scratch and you can tell. Tucked next to a tackle shop of a strip mall along the roadside of Benzie Highway is the best pizza for 100 miles, including Traverse City. It looks like you would expect a place to look beside a fishing gear store; they found a place that had tiled floor, put up a wall for the kitchen and oven, towed in a bar. This could have easily been a space for a DMV waiting room, but slap two TVs on the way, tap the kegs, put on the hockey and voilá. Whomever is making these pizzas knows what they are doing... they mastered it. The pizza has the thinness that is very hard to achieve, and shows the experience of the pizzaiolo; it's like inspecting a carpenter's work; you have to have made tons of pizzas, the art has to be in your hands to craft the dough in this way. The cook is perfect, a nice light crunch to the crust and not "floppiness" to the slice. Come here because you love pizza and you aren't an asshole. Have eaten here a couple of times now and really love their NY style pizza. They sell whole pies or you can order by the slice. It's an affordable (and filling) lunch.
