I've driven down to this HobbyTown USA location multiple times since I moved to Portland six years ago. The staff has always taken the time to greet me as I walk in, take a look at my RC car and help me figure out what's wrong and tell me exactly what I need to do or in some cases even show me what to do. I've had such a positive experience every time I've been here! They recently (June 2024) added some fun tracks in the back for customers to use! You can also rent the cars to use back there if you don't have your own. A suspended obstacle course, a drift track and a couple other tracks. If you are into rc cars, or have someone in the family who is, this is definitely a place for you to try out! read more

I don't know what has happened to this place. Not to long ago, there was a wall full of so many plastic model cars boats planes to choose from. Now there is a shelf about half full of the same modes. Nothing to choose from that's good quality models. And the paint section has been bare since at least January of this year. It's like none of the paints or cements or primers have been replaced with new stock. I drove a half hour just to get some paints for my model car I bought, and it is very disappointing. Bare shelves, nothing getting restocked. I'm done going there. I have spent a lot of money at that store in the past, now it's just a ghost of its former self. Better off going to hobby lobby or just Amazon. read more

Ok hobby shop as far as items. Main highlight is the backstage area where there is a few different racetracks for RC vehicles. That's pretty cool! Staff is friendly and helpful too. Only issue is that they didn't have a lot of good variety of products compared to other stores I have been to. read more

Garbage customer service. A very unwelcoming feeling as soon as you step through the door, almost as if the staff can't wait for you to leave. The Hobby town in Wilsonville is miles more accommodating. The owner there let's you take the trucks out of the boxes to inspect, has demos that are ready for you to take OUTSIDE and try. That place is the best- although their selection isn't as large as this one. When I went to the one in Happy Valley (this one) I asked to see a truck that was already unboxed behind the glass, so that they wouldn't have to open a new box, was exactly what I said-​ and the old lady just snaps "oh yea, we don't do that here"... she wasn't even the one that was helping me. Early this week a purchased a RC Gravedigger. After the car, a battery and a charger I spent close to $400.00 that day. Later that afternoon after we got Grave Digger up and running and within 10 minutes a part had broken, and the legendary Grave Digger was dead. The very next day I had called and told them the situation. I brought my car with me. Within minutes, they had checked the part number, got it, and installed it on my sons vehicle. I love coming here. I just wish they were open to at least 8. I build model cars and airplanes. Mostly cars. They have a great selection of both model kits, and an awesome selection of paints, glues, and everything else in between. Also a great selection of RC vehicles and accessories. Not a bad hobbytown but as with this chain it you don't do remote control toys it is very spotty.

Dropped a batter off to be fixed. Owner told us an hour at the most. Called to pick up she said she needed more time, 3 days later still not done. Not to mention when we called on it the young kid behind the desk was rude. Finally picked up our unfixed battery days later that was only suppose to take 1 hour to fix. read more

I wish there had been a place like this near my house when I was growing up, when I was into R/C vehicles. My projects are more modest these days, painting miniatures and modding Hot Wheels, and they always have exactly what I'm looking for from fabrication materials to paints to decals. I do always walk around when I'm there and drool over the amazing array of R/C vehicles, Lego, and particularly the gorgeous, larger-scale slot cars. I can't believe how bad these people are. The same owner owns the Hobby Town USA in Vancouver also. I started my quest at the Vancouver store. I was interested in 1/32 slot cars for my man cave. When I asked they said they didn't carry them at the Vancouver store because there wasn't any call for them. They do however carry them at the 82nd st store. A couple of days later I went into the 82nd St store. Yes they had a few. They couldn't answer any questions but there was somebody coming in that was the expert. Imagine my surprise when the expert was the guy from Vancouver. He walked through the door and the lady said that I have a few questions about slot cars. He looked her dead in the eye and said "I told you that I wasn't here". With the proliferation of hobby oriented Web sites, the only thing these brick and mortar stores have to offer is knowledge. I would have probably dropped a few hundred dollars but what I heard was "Go buy it off the internet ". Save your time and money and don't bother with these clowns. read more

***False Advertising*** I visited this store today...wish I hadn't. A lady (probably in her 50's) helped me out. I got a negative vibe right away. Seemed as though I was a bother to her. She eventually found was I was looking for. She started ringing me up and I told her had a coupon for $20 off a $60 or more purchase. She gave me a dirty look and said she would have to look up their actual cost. I said...okay...she then said she wouldn't take the coupon because the discount would be too close to their cost. I said the coupon says it's good for any purchase over $60??? The item I was going to purchase was $75. Seemed pretty straight forward. I had even called before going to their store and talked to someone there who said I could use the coupon. She didn't believe me and seemed pretty agitated. So they wouldn't honor the coupon. They were willing to match the price listed on their website which was $63 (not sure why the "in store" price didn't match the price advertised on their website). But fair enough...I just wanted them to honor the coupon they had previously told me they would. So instead of selling it to me for $55 with the coupon ($75 less $20 off)....she got really defensive and said they would only match their website price of $63. So for a difference of $8 they treated me like crap and made me pretty uncomfortable. A bummer really. Pretty lame customer service by the older lady that works in the shop. I felt it was a last resort going in here looking for a tiny remote control helicopter for my husband. Walmart had the plastic ones for nearly $40 and I thought, well, it is a birthday, and for my husband no doubt, so let me venture into Hobby Town in panic mode, looking for at least an upgraded model. I should know how long they have been here, since I've shopped at Trader Joes next door since they opened, but this Hobby Town is very junky from the minute you walk in and see wires being covered up by the floor mat at the front door. It strikes you as a very worn out store. As another review says, nobody will acknowledge you at all. Luckily I knew what I was looking for. There was a man and woman behind the counter and the woman was helping a guy who sounded like he comes in a lot, and the other guy was on the phone. When I walked up to pay, they let me stand there, both looked at me. Thanks people for the stare down and the guy finally came over and never said anything, he rang me up and out the door I went. The vibe in that store is not one that makes you want to hang out. I knew they run expensive, but when you are in a birthday emergency situation your good judgment tends to cloud, I was guilty of this because a week later, I see the exact same helicopter for $10 less at Costco, bringing it down to $19. If my husband had not had so much fun buzzing the dog and dusting the top of my lamp shades with it, I might have hit them with a one star. read more

I read the reviews and did not want to go but it was close and they had what I needed. I looked around for a bit and I was asked if I needed help. I did need some help. The guy seemed nice and helped me quickly. Cashed out and was on my way! Found out later I didn't have what I needed. He sold me the wrong items for my application. Maybe an honest mistake. Because of the way the products were packaged I didn't try to return the items. They got me this time but I will visit again in the future! It was a good experience all in all! read more

I went in on the hunt for very small deer. I had my scopes set for N-scale, and nothing else would do. Plus: HobbyTown USA has them. Not many places do. Minus: They only had one package and its blister-pack was missing a deer. Plus: They gave me a 10% discount on the missing deer. Minus: I spent WAY too much time trying to sort the packages to see what exactly they had in stock. The hooks held an overstuffed mixed-up jumble of every possible figurine combination. Plus/Minus: When you walk in, they don't acknowledge or talk to you until you start disassembling and re-arranging their entire figurine section. I'm actually the kind of person who's OK with that. Plus: I was able to imagine, in miniature, a whole wide world full of blister-packed Lovers, Roofers, Dog Washers, Rebels, Engineers and Wildlife Fight Scenes. Minus: I couldn't purchase most of these, 'cause the prices for these tiny treasures were just a bit too steep. Pluses and Minuses aside, when I'm a grumpy old man, conducting my miniature trains in the workshop I've built, I'll likely know every employee here by name, since shops that carry model train supplies in Portland seem a bit too few and far between. read more

I've been here a dozen times or so, and the staff always answers my questions to my satisfaction. They have a great selection of most any 20th century hobby you might be interested in. They've always had what I needed to finish my modeling projects. In an age of vanishing model shops, I hope they manage to stick around. Never been rude to me, just businesslike. Parents - how about instead of getting another video game for 50 bucks, why not buy the kids a model car, airplane, or rocket kit? They'll learn to read instructions, follow a diagram, build, and spend hours obsessively detailing or painting, and have something to show for it when they're through. The staff basically SUCK. they have a ton of hobby stuff at normal prices (no deals here) this is my fifth time here and every time the staff act bothered to have customers, the check out fellow didn't make eye contact, didn't say thanks for coming, don't smile at all, didn't have clean breath, didn't have clean hands, didn't have clean clothes, and seemed like he hated his job. Screw these guys. But the rockets are cool. Only reason they get a two star is the selection of things but don't expect help when your shopping. PS. when I got home the jerk gave me a glue that is acidic and corrosive to foam which is why I asked for an adhesive that was safe for foam. Screw these guys. read more

So disappointed with the staff and manger(owner?). Not sure if he was, but acted like it. Staff was rude and dismissive the first time I went in although I love the selection. Went in again hoping for better treatment and was met with same rudeness plus a manger/owner type who was even more condescending and inappropriate. He at one point waved something in my face so much that I had to put my hand up to stop him from physically getting so close to me. Perhaps he had an issue with me being in that store since I'm a woman? I really wish I could make this place somewhere I frequent but the staff is so unpleasant it's not worth it. :(. Go at night when the young guy is working. The other staff are rude and treat you like your needs are an inconvenience. The guy at night is helpful and knowledgeable. I must say--if it hadn't been for the fella named Ken (I think thats his name) I would be a LOT farther behind with regards to getting my first r/c plane in the air.....for him alone I'd have given five stars without question. But there was a lady there yesterday (manager/owner?don't know) but she literally and in a very audible fashion berated him right in front of the customers; what a turn off! Bottom line, let Ken continue to be the ENORMOUS help that he is with his knowledge and awesome ability to answer r/c questions (even help you when you bring your model into the store!) and keep the owner/manager gal in the backroom filing paperwork and away from customers and that'd be optimal! thanks for your help Ken! read more

I was greeted on entry and assisted by a gentleman as I stepped in seeking scale models of aircraft that were relevant to my background. We found one, and the gentleman made a computer check for the other item(s) I had in mind. Though not currently in stock, I appreciated the assistance. The store was well illuminated. Prices on the items I considered were no better or worse than other resources I've explored, but I was pleased with the customer service and product visibility, so I will return. As someone returning to model building after a 30+ year break I have to say this place is great. It's unfortunate that it's gotten a bad rap and to be honest I was reluctant to go there because of the reviews. I was overwhelmed by the selection of kits, paints and supplies. The staff has always been cool to me and will do special orders if you ask. HUGE selection of Gundam and SciFi kits as well as tools and weathering supplies. This place is pretty good! Large selection of everything rc.. Helis, planes and cars. They also carry lots of parts, more than other shops I have visited. Their prices are pretty standard, not bad but not great. I have never had a bad experience with the staff, however some employees are much more knowledgable than others. One of the biggest frustrations with hobby shops is when you buy a new toy and it breaks, they don't have the parts to fix it.. They have always had what I needed and even helped me fix my heli. Their hours are more convenient too as they are open later than most. I am a fan and recommend Hobbytown. I go in regularly as I look for my next toy, or need to fix something I crashed. read more
