Strawberry Refresher
Ronald N.

Hizcafe has been serving the City of Hercules awhile now and they are doing a great job on people walking along the Bayfront. A coffee place with a good view of the water and the trains passing by. I tried the entire drink that is on the menu. I do like the Strawberry Refresher. It is a nice cold drink to have while sitting down at the table watching people strolling along the Bayfront. Here is what I enjoy Hizcafe, with the Hercules Farmers Market being nearby on Saturday this would be the place to go to while attending the Farmers Market. Another Five Star Review on Hizacafe

Breakfast Empanada, Rolo Steak hot sandwich, and Iced Hazelnut Latte

Little local cafe found in Hercules. Great for patio seating and enjoying the breeze by Hercules waterfront. They drinks (hot or cold), breakfast and lunch food. Street parking is available and free. This is my second time ordering an Iced Hazelnut Latte and breakfast empanada, and it's good. Quick bite with a coffee. There rolo steak sandwich is delicious. Hot and freshly made from the kitchen. Come check this spot out!

Chorizo Empanadas with mango habanero, sugar free iced vanilla latte

Empanadas were SOO good and the size was much bigger than I thought! Such a great spot to stop by with a few outdoor tables

Super cute tiny cafe by the bay! It felt surreal - like it's an extremely cute residental street. Lots of parking by the bay. They have great selection of colombian coffee, empanadas, and alfajors! I had an ice coffee, perfect treat and stop on a long drive. Plenty of patio seats with the bay view. It's so nice and peaceful here. You can also walk by the bay! But I definitely got bitten by a mosquito even at like 4pm so be careful!

First time trying this place out and it did not disappoint! It is basically an order to go and dine outside place. Seating is very limited only about 12-15 chairs outside. It's right next to the shore so you can count on a nice view and fresh breeze! The service is really good, employees are fast and very kind. The food and drinks are also really great! I tried the passion fruit refresher with sparkling water and lychee jelly which was nice and refreshing ;) I got through half the drink before remembering to take a photo. The empanadas were super tasty! They were both packed with flavor and the dough was a nice soft texture. I tried it with and without mango habanero sauce and either way was really yummy! If you live in the area or are dropping by the area you should visit this place for a great drink or snack! They even serve sandwiches and other great meals that i hope to try out in the future!

Hizcafe is more of a grab and go type of situation, since they only offer outdoor seating. This would be a great spot to sit and catch up with friends on a warm, sunny day, and there is a nice view of the water over the train tracks if you look west. If you are looking for a cafe to get some work done, this is not the spot. Also, they do not have any bathrooms. I got the iced vanilla latte, which was ok in terms of taste. For caffeine purposes, it did its job. I also got the chocolate walnut alfajore, and it hit the spot. The dulce de leche filling contains walnuts, which added a nice crunch and offset some of the sweetness. Saw the many reviews raving about the empanadas, which I'll have to try next time.

Neighborhood cafe with a view. We often come here after a walk along the water. My adult kids like the coffee and sandwiches (Paisa Chicken). For this visit we had the cafe latte and the espresso macchiato. We also had the breakfast empanada served warm - I wish it was a little bit more toasted. I recommend trying their sandwiches and the chorizo empanada. The service is efficient.

Bacon egg and cheese and beef empeñadas with a Vietnamese coffee.

My brother turned on to the empanadas at Cafe Bueno Aires but they don't taste like they used to so I'm happy to have another place to get them. I tried the bacon egg and cheese and the beef empanadas. Both were really tasty and still very warm by the time they delivered to Richmond from Hercules. Highly recommend!! Vietnamese coffee is good too

Views are amazing from here ! Sunrises - sunsets - or just throughout the day :,) you get a great view of the bay. Empanadas are delicious - really flavorful & the outside has a crunch! I love the sauces they have for the empanadas as well - from a fellow sauce queen The ham & cheese one tastes like a fancy hot pocket

With surprising regularity over the past couple of years, I've been walking back and forth over the five miles that make up the San Pablo Bay Regional Trail. I say 'surprising' because I don't live nearby, but what the hell, it gives me my FitBit steps next to the calm water over fairly flat pavement. The commercial development hasn't caught up with the residential though I only noticed recently that there were small businesses on the last block of Railroad Ave in Hercules. At the very end of the street is this friendly coffee spot which serves a specialty Colombian blend coffee. It's not a cafe with indoor seating but rather an embedded kiosk with an inviting patio - which frankly makes it more ideal during a pandemic. They could probably use a couple of sandwich boards on the trail at the edge of the waterfront parking because it was purely by chance that I noticed they were open for business. It turned out they have quite a menu of coffee, tea, and sandwiches. There were also empanadas, and other baked goods like alfajores in keeping with their Colombian theme. I ordered the $3.89 Medium Mocha Latte, and it was just the right temperature libation for a late afternoon treat (photo: https://bit.ly/3mVypRO). I believe it was the young owner who was serving me, and he generously offered me a complimentary lemon brownie (photo: https://bit.ly/3qNPZZ9). After smirking that I didn't need the extra calories, I gratefully accepted and enjoyed the sweet indulgence. I'll likely come back on my next shoreline stroll. COFFEE - 5 stars...the latte hit the spot and so did I AMBIANCE - 5 stars...ideal spot for a mid-walk libation SERVICE - 5 stars...hey, they gave me a free brownie TOTAL - 5 stars...the right place, the right time RELATED - Exploring the western part of Contra Costa County? Colombian Empanadas and desserts
Rachel M.

Whenever a new spot pops up in Hercules, I make it a point to give it a try. This time it's a Colombian cafe at the corner of Railroad Ave overlooking the bay. It looks like a nice place to grab a bite and/or hot beverage. You order at the window and there is a some outdoor seating in the mini patio. Music was playing from a rock that looked like a radio - clever! Menu has a bunch of sandwiches, some pastries, empanadas and a variety of drinks. I ordered a chicken and beef empanada, ($4 each) an Alfajor meringue, and a lemon brownie ($3.50 each) to go since I had groceries in the car. I toasted the empanadas when I got home because I like them warm. Each were a bit small, had a nice flavorful chicken and beef filling and the dough was ok but overall nothing special. I did notice from other reviewers' photos that there were sauces that came with the empanada but I wasn't offered any. They would have helped elevate the experience. The desserts were very sweet- I didn't care for the lemon brownie but I did like the Alfajor meringue better. This is a traditional South American dessert that has two shortbread cookies coated in meringue with dulce de leche in the middle. It's nice to enjoy with tea. I haven't tried their drinks yet so I may be missing out a star for that. I may be back to give it another shot.

Is there outlets/is this place study friendly?

When I was there it's all outside seating with no outlets. Looked like they might have inside seating at some point in future. Need to check with them. You could easily have a laptop at one of the outside tables

We ordered a creamy corn empanada, traditional beef empanada, plum & bacon empanada, al pastor empanada, and a bacon egg & cheese empanada. Everything was fresh, authentic, and delicious. My favorite empanadas were the traditional beef and al pastor. Along with the flavorful meat filling, I enjoyed the crispy flaky crust as well. The sauce and pica de gallo provided went well with the empanadas. The presentation of the empanadas in the box was appealing and delightful. I appreciated the little menu in the box to inform you what you ordered. The little flower was a nice touch. Overall we enjoyed our experience at Vinoma. It was nice to try some legit empanadas from an Argentinian restaurant. Price point was fair. Glad we were able to run into this gem in wine country. We hope to be back next time we are in the area.

I am so disappointed at the food changes and feeling bad to give a bad review as I love supporting small businesses and love Salvadorean food. There's a lot of room to improve. I've been eating Salvi food since I was child. If you order to go check before you leave. I had an item missing. I called and was able to get a refund. She handled it nice too since she forgot to add it. I took food to go. I added pictures on all. The tamales both chipilin and pork were good. The masa was excellent. The size was small to medium. The pupusas are tiny, they are good but nothing extraordinary. As they are small there's no cheese stretch or a good feel about the filling. The masa is good. The quesadilla pasty was crumbly, it did not feel fresh. It was dry with no flavor compared to ones I've eaten before. The best Salvi quesadillas are moist. The guava, pineapple, and custard empanada pastry were small. The pineapple one did not feel fresh, more on the dry side, crumbly compared to other flavors. The pork empanada was probably the worst. They were tiny with hardly any filling. The empanadas usually have a ground meat or shredded chicken. This one had pieces of pork so it was not flavorful at all. There's table seating indoors and outdoors. The yucca con chicharron was okay too. Usually it comes with a salad like but this one came with 1 beet, 1 slice of tomato and 1 slice of cucumber with a small bag of curtido. No sauce. Tip: The server gave me a business card and recommended to call for orders to go as the waiting time was 30 minutes. I did not mind waiting. I appreciated her sharing this. Tip: recommend the pork tamal. The pupusas if hungry get at least 3.

It's a tiny place and there's no outdoor seating so not really a place where you can sit and eat unless you get lucky and arrive early and no one is sitting at the table. I especially like ordering the big platter of Shanghai lumpia for parties with friends or for my child's classroom (it's always a hit with everyone young and old).. my only gripe is the timing of pick up. I used to order over the phone right when they open all the time but 100% of my orders are never ready at the specified time. Even though I give a specified time for pick up I end up waiting at least 10-15 minutes more after the time I requested. I thought maybe it was because I was ordering over the phone and not paying until I get to the restaurant for pick up later in the afternoon so thought I'd try ordering in person, paying up front and giving a pick up time for a few hours later. We arrived a few minutes early and they actually didn't have it ready and I, unfortunately, still waited a little bit. In any case, the wait is usually worth it but if I'm extremely pressed for time I think I would call ahead of time to let them know I was coming to pick up.

I love that they put the empanadas in labeled sleeves so you actually know which is which! I've been to places that just stamp a letter on the crust, and half the time you can't even read it. This way is much easier especially when you're ordering a bunch of them like me. They are easy to eat on the go or grab a table at either end of Oxbow Market. Don't forget to get a side of their Chimmichuri sauce for $1.50. The sauce really completes the empanada! The staff is always friendly, helpful, and happy to make recommendations if you can't decide. I ordered both the crab and Cuban empanadas when I visited them at the San Jose Latin Food Festival. Their empanadas are made-to-order, which is great in theory as you know they are fresh but also resulted in waiting almost 30-45 minutes. The empanadas were definitely tasty but not necessarily worth the long wait. Now I should mention that the festival itself was a complete flop (if I could write a review, it would be two stars)... besides this place, there was literally one other taco truck and a Puerto Rican food stall. There were quite a few people in attendance at this festival that were literally all split in terms of waiting in line between these three places. I'll give Dona Aida's the benefit of the doubt and that they may have just been overwhelmed with the crowd hence the long wait time. However, I should note that I also caught a glimpse of this place at the Latin Food Festival in Oakland (much more successfully put together than the festival in San Jose) and they seemed to be backed up there as well. Once again, the empanadas from here were delicious and had I picked up my order immediately, I would have given a five star review, but it does seem like they are best used for pre-orders/catering rather than made-to-order at an event.
