Brunch at The Hive Cafe today! I ordered the chicken and waffles with a side of grits, and everything was good. The waitress was very personable and provided great service. The ambiance was just okay, but I was happy it wasn't loud sometimes a quiet brunch is exactly what's needed. Over the years, several restaurants have tried to fill that void, but there was always something special about the combination of food, atmosphere, and consistency that made Goody Goody stand out. After browsing Yelp, my sister and I came across Hive, located at 235 S. Florissant Ave. in St. Louis, Missouri, and decided to give it a try. The first thing I noticed was how clean and inviting everything felt. The atmosphere is bright and modern, the logo is memorable, and the dining room still has that fresh, well-maintained feel. I even checked the restroom, which was spotless. That's always a good sign. The second thing I noticed was how good everyone's food looked. Every plate coming out of the kitchen made ordering more difficult because everything looked tempting. We were greeted quickly by a friendly hostess, and our waitress was knowledgeable, accommodating, and genuinely interested in making sure we had a good experience. Like many modern breakfast spots, Hive offers a variety of brunch-style cocktails. While the drink menu looked appealing, I was hoping for decaf coffee and was disappointed they didn't offer it. That's a small thing, but it would be a nice addition in the future. Food is where Hive really shines. My sister and I both loved the "Build Your Breakfast" option, which allows you to customize your meal by choosing a bread, sides, and protein. I ordered French toast, eggs, breakfast potatoes with peppers and onions, and four chicken wings. Everything was outstanding. The food arrived hot and fresh, my wings were literally still steaming when they hit the table. The seasoning was spot-on, the French toast was delicious, and the breakfast potatoes were some of the best I've had in a long time. My sister ordered the catfish sandwich with breakfast potatoes and enjoyed her meal just as much. Honestly, everything we ate was excellent. I enjoyed the food so much that I asked who was behind it. We were told the menu was created by an old-school cook whose recipes continue to guide the kitchen today. Whoever that person is, they knew exactly what they were doing. The food reminded me of Goody Goody, not as a copy, but as a restaurant carrying that same spirit while adding its own personality and style. The only thing keeping this from a full five-star experience was the plastic silverware. The food, presentation, and atmosphere feel elevated enough that real silverware would make the experience feel even more polished. Overall, Hive is one of the best breakfast spots I've visited in the St. Louis area in quite some time. I sincerely hope they maintain their quality because they've earned a repeat customer. This spot was highly recommended by a local, and I'm so glad I went. The food, service, and ambiance are all solid. At noon on a Sunday, it was bustling, but luckily, there was a very short wait for a table. Our server, Antigone, was fantastic! She provided amazing recommendations, was extremely warm and friendly, and made our experience very pleasant despite the somewhat lengthy wait for our food. The food was well worth the wait. I thoroughly enjoyed my order of salmon croquettes with rice and a biscuit. My mate's Build-A-Breakfast order of scrambled eggs, hash browns, and chicken wings had some of the best-tasting wings that I have ever had in my life. This place came across my feed and I decided to check it out and my flight got in from Tampa. They told me where I could sit and when I initially sat my stuff down, the chair was covered in dust. I moved to the seat across that was still a little dusty but not as much. The server came over immediately and gave me menus. I briefly saw the menu online but figured I'd do a once over before making my decision. I went with the build-your-own breakfast and got the eggs and potatoes with a biscuit and turkey sausage. Drink wise, I went with water and a strawberry-pineapple mimosa. The mimosa was so refreshing and I def. appreciated the pour after a stressful flight! It wasn't long until my food came out. I was a bit disappointed at the portion of the egg as they seemed almost too small for what I was supposed to receive. The peppers on the potatoes threw me off. I think I was expecting something different. Nevertheless, they were good but not what I had pictured. Surprisingly, the biscuit was the highlight of my meal. It was perfect! The turkey sausage tasted like regular turkey sausage, so nothing special there. Overall, my server was awesome and gave great service. While I enjoyed my visit, it would have been nice if there signs to let customers know they're under construction instead of walking into dust on the floor, chairs, and everywhere. I've tried the shrimp and grits, the french toast, and the chicken and waffles. All of it was delicious. They have mimosa options as well as a bar for mixed drinks. Parking is off street but shared with the local residents who live above the restaurant (that has to be unnecessarily tempting if you work from home!) Anywho, check them out. The food here at the Hive Cafe is so good that I had to come back again lol. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by a friendly face and the vibes were on point. The first time I visited I tried the Build-A-Breakfast and it comes with two sides, a choice of bread, and a choice meat. I had French toast (2 pieces come with it) and for my sides, I chose grits, bacon, and some breakfast potatoes. I also ordered a Dusse Punch for my drink and everything was so good! Very well lit. They were pretty packed when we arrived but the wait wasn't too long for seating. The food was really really good minus the large amount of butter. Today was the grand opening. It's to be expected there will be kinks to work out. They are off to an amazing start though. It's not a large establishment, so they can only seat roughly 30 patrons at a time. I would not suggest you bring your large group, rather a party of 2 to 4. I was recently disappointed in treatment received here. My cousin arrived before me with the adequate number of guests that we made the reservation for with one of the owners. Upon arrival we were told there was no reservation. They don't take them. It was then explained. I am pretty sure the owner confirmed with the staff before responding with her yes. She was detailed and said we won't seat anyone in a section 30 minutes before your arrival. Needless to say my cousin encountered a nasty employee (not the owner). Once I arrived and shared who took my reservation, we were seated in a different area with everyone scattered throughout. No one even came in the room where we were seated for 30 minutes. We called a brunch place directly across the street, they had available seating, took us right in, and gave us exceptional service. Oh, and the food was good. Later learned that the owner's husband said he didn't give an F if we had left. The feeling, unfortunately, was mutual. We try to support black owed businesses but cannot continue to settle for less. Back for a second visit. And I must say, I'm pleased with how things have improved in just a week since I was here. Seated and served quickly! The food was just delicious as it was before. I did notice; however, that the portions of some of our dishes were a tad bit smaller than they were my first visit. Not sure why - the prices didn't change. If I have one complaint it's how they price the pitcher of mimosas. I don't recall how much a pitcher costs, but our server informed us that only 2 glasses come with each pitcher. Since there were four of us, we were required to purchase two pitchers. Doesn't make sense, nor is that fair- to the customer. The restaurant is making out like a bandit if that's their rule. I dine out frequently and I've never been limited on how many glasses come with a pitcher. Furthermore, the table of three next to us had one pitcher and three glasses. Really? When we walked in it was two of us and we were given one menu. Then I had to ask and wait for coffee and had to keep asking for a refill. My order was placed wrong. First time visiting with my partner for a random breakfast run. Hive Cafe has been on our list to visit for a while and we were very pleased with finally making the stop. The cafe was very nice, accessible parking, and great location right off New Florissant Road. The cafe was definitely hustling and bustling with folks simply enjoying breakfast, have meetings, or utilizing the work space. The menu options were plentiful. We both created our own breakfast platters. Our wait staff was so sweet and very attentive. We did experience one small mix up (his chicken and waffles order came out wrong), but the staff corrected the issue immediately. The space in general was cleanly, well organized, and you could see a team effort amongst the staff. I will definitely be back to support! Especially with this being a black owned business creating a functional space and opportunity here in North County! Definitely pay them a visit. read more
