Today they said they have no rice or chicken and there's a problem with their pancake batter. This isn't a great situation for a restaurant with a limited breakfast menu. Coffee is good however. read more

I have only tried the bowls but find them excellent for a healthy lunch. The outdoor patio is lovely.

Stopped by during their grand opening week and got the half-off chicken items deal. Tried a few different things, including roasted chicken, chicken pot pie, snack and a slice of the hive pie. Chicken pot pie is very tasty and pretty filling. The hive pie tastes like a custard pie with the right level of sweetness and creaminess. Roast chicken is very good and the price for the whole chicken is acceptable considering the fact that they use high quality ingredients. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Have been to Hive several times since it opened in summer, always good food! Atmosphere: you order at the counter and get your own drinks, food is delivered to your table. Nice patio seating although a little loud from adjacent road. VERY CLEAN- and there is a hand washing station outside the bathroom, which I love! FOOD: Delicious. Have so far tried sandwiches and bowls - never anything bad! Nice selection of sides. Kids portions generous. SERVICE: even though it is essentially self serve, attentive staff answering questions, cleaning tables, etc. DRAWBACKS: 1. Prices - higher than average for a la carte self service, although ingredients are high quality. 2. Get more beers on tap! It is the child of a brewery - get more beers! I am so glad I've tried this place before I leave Bloomington. I got the Yoga bowl and it was delicious. There were four options for coffee, including decaf and brown county coffee. I feel like it is a bit expensive, but considering the amount of veggis, it is reasonable. The place is very spacious and clean. read more

Had an interesting mix of cafeteria meets Panera. The menu is very limited - and very expensive for what you get. I got the Chicken Pot Pie that, while delicious, was a whopping $12, with no sides or anything. My partner got the Churrasco bowl, was even worse at $15 (also no sides), and was ok in flavor. Customer service was excellent and the establishment was very neat. Plus, their disposables are eco-friendly. Were it not for how expensive it is for its offerings, it would get the full five stars. Give Hive a try. It's worth supporting this latest entry from One World Enterprises (Pizza X, Lennie's, Bloomington Brewing, etc. http://www.bloomington.com/brands/index.html). Unfortunately we just didn't like the food very much. Maybe some day I'll give Hive another try with some different items on the menu, but our first breakfast did not imbue us with great enthusiasm. The service was slow, too, despite the restaurant not appearing to be very busy. I had the Kuku: Crustless quiche packed with greens -- kale, spinach, mint, and cilantro -- walnuts, and currants. But it's far from the flavor of traditional quiche one might expect or want. The Kuku tastes strongly of the walnuts and currants, which is fine if that's what you want. But if you want a more traditional cheese/onion/bacon (Lorraine) style quiche, you can't find it on the menu. I also had the Cinnamon Roll: Made with organic flour, European-style butter, brown sugar, honey, and sea salt. But it too is not the flavor I was expecting, as the texture and flavor of the dough is like cake donut, and the rest is heavy on butter flavor and not much cinnamon or sweetness. I was hoping for a stronger cinnamon and sweet flavor, and a flakier dough. My wife had the Cauliflower Grits: Corn grits, cheddar, cauliflower, sautéed greens, mushrooms, and garlic. She too was underwhelmed, reporting that it was mostly a pile of grits without enough of the other ingredients to add flavor. So, give Hive a try and see what you think. Met friends for dinner last night at Hive. Sat on the patio which is dog friendly! Enjoyed CHURRASCO a steak bowl with sliced steak, jasmine rice, black beans, pico de gallo, sautéed peppers & onions, avocado crema, chimichurri, fried plantain, and Hive crunch mix. The steak was perfectly seasoned, rich with a deep spicy rub and a cold session IPA on the side. I took a slice of peach pie home and it was perfect. I love pie and am often disappointed with a pie's crust. This peach pie did NOT disappoint. I will certainly go back. read more

Helpful, kind staff. Accurate menu online, in print, and posted. Fresh, clean food in interesting combinations. It would be helpful to have an ingredients page on the website for people with food allergies. Also, my hot bowl was two meals' worth of food - same for my husband's Reuben. We'll have to figure out how to order less food. At Tenth and the Bypass, Hive is ideally located for people driving east from IU. There's a good place for a driver and car to wait while a passenger goes in for a takeout order. This old lady found the chairs really, really hard and really, really low. I don't think I'll be eating in-house again, but I look forward to enjoying takeout from Hive. read more

We went to Hive for lunch today. We've been here a few times now. The food and service are both pretty great. The cardamom cream soda and Reuben egg rolls are favorites. Their flavor bar always is a fun area to visit too with a variety of pickles and jams. I do think it is a bit overpriced (a little over $40 for lunch today), but not so much that we haven't returned. read more

Friendly helpful staff. Sides and deserts in a nice display case. Went to have a Reuben $15.75 I have heard so many good things about. Got a side of 1000 island to add to the it as needed. Ordered a beet pickled egg as a side for $1.50 Nice open dining area with great natural lighting. Nicely landscaped outdoor dining area. The tables and chairs were all in long rows. Reminded me of my 3rd grade cafeteria, also looked like it might be a prison dining area. It was busy and somewhat loud but not too loud. On to the meal. I was expecting a lot from the Reuben , I had heard it compared to Shapiro's in Indy. Sadly it was not as tasty. I think it was the bread or how it was heated. It was in a par with Scenic view's with Scenic being a tad better. The egg was not what I was expecting. It was split with the white a pink color and the yoke more red and somewhat translucent. Very pretty. It tasted a little sweet, not what I was expecting. Scratch that off my list. To sum up I will go back. Won't have the Reuben or the egg. Oh another thing if you don't know this is a restaurant you won't see a sign outside. Hope those thousands of cars going by figure it out. read more

Really good food! I had the churrasco bowl. The meat (i think brisket) need a little more broiling. It was really great though. I tried the roasted chicken and it was great too. Hive Restaurant is a spacious new eatery where good food and friendly service seems to reign supreme. Parking is plentiful and so is air conditioning. I like the walk-up and order arrangement and then the prepared food is delivered to the table. Plentiful windows enhance the indoor experience. Eating outside at an umbrella covered table is also a choice. I've been sampling the breakfast pastries. I enjoy the Kuku (it's like eating in the Emerald City of Oz) for it's flavorful packed with nutrients profile. The cinnamon rolls are outstanding. I have also enjoyed the cheese Danish. The Cuban Bowl has been a hit with my breakfast mates. Also leaning green are the fiber straws, glass glasses, plates and metal silverware. No plastic waste here. The lunch/dinner menu looks delicious. I'm looking forward to trying that. Hive is a sister restaurant to Lenny's, so there's some successful history here. Hope Hive becomes a Bloomington mainstay. read more

Food is good, but the price is WAY off. I mean unless you like paying $9 for a CHICKEN SALAD SANDWICH. It was delicious and I won't lie, the best I've had, but I just can't understand how expensive it is for just normal deli sandwiches and pastries.
