The atmosphere reminds me of a place you might stop in in the U.P., or Northern Minnesota on your way to a fishing trip..... a little hole-in-the-wall, nothing fancy. Super casual. Dimly lit. Old-school. Basic. HOWEVER, the food is fantastic. The tenderloin that I brought home for my husband was SPECTACULAR. Thick, juicy, not greasy. The omelette was enough for two. The burger was huge. This place has come full circle over the years, and is currently a very legitimate food option on the East side and near lake Monroe. The basil pesto chicken, and BLT were exceptional. Service was great too. Nice outdoor space in the bar side. Highly recommend. read more

We were surprised that this hole in the wall would serve really good food. Don't let the establishment's outer appearance scare you away. The hamburger was hand patted. The BLT was made from fresh ingredients, the bacon was still hot when I was served my sandwich. The server was also the cook that afternoon. He was friendly! I would put this establishment on my "might stop again " list. read more

Can't get over how great the food is and how low the prices are here. We were staying at the Monroe campsite and both ate for $20, which feels unheard of these days. We both ordered sweet tea which was clearly homemade, got a great burger and a truly excellent pork tenderloin sandwich, which we could hear the cook flattening the old-fashioned way in the kitchen. No one else was here on a Sunday night, so can't speak to the ambience, but we fully plan to return to check out the breakfast menu. Little hole in the wall restaurant on the way back into Bloomington. Spent a weekend backpacking the Deam Wilderness and all of my friends recommended this place. We stopped to use the bathroom and grab a late breakfast. I think I spent like $4 on a coffee, OJ (in a bottle) and a pancake. I almost got the stack but she told me they were plate size...glad I went with just one. The decor is something like one of those places which are part crafts shop, part restaurant, I believe everything was for sale. One of the oddest things I noticed was the bag of water over the door...I thought it was a joke or something but the waitress told me it was to keep flies out. One of my buddies said he has eaten here for years and never seen a fly in the summer so it must work! Bathrooms are kinda small and dirty and could really use an update. No, just no.....I wasn't even sure it was open when we arrived. We were the only people there. The booths were mostly broken and torn. There was trash piled everywhere! Looks like someone cleaned out their garage and piled it around the restaurant. I had the pulled pork special....it had the consistency of baby food. If you're looking for a snazzy looking restaurant, this ain't it. But if you're looking for a place that puts its money and talent where you're mouth is, then you've come to the right place! Every dish is delicious, all day breakfast is fresh not matter what time and a super nice staff. It's a dive bar with a family vibe and very cool regulars. When I walked in I wasn't sure, small dark room, small stage with instrument. My husband and I decided to stay because it had good reviews. Glad we did, staff was super polite. We both got the cheeseburger, it was sooo good, I upgraded chips to fries (enough for 2-3 people). Great prices, definitely try if you are in the area. read more

Very Diamond in the rough. Stopped in for Breakfast. Some of the best biscuits and gravy I have had. Try the haystacks and the Manhattan was great too. While the serving of gravy served is sufficient, and its really good I would have ordered a 2nd serving of gravy. read more

I'm not saying this is a true '4-star' restaurant, but it should receive props for what it is...a great, little, local place that can serve up a perfect traditional grilled cheese, sweet tea, and tasty home fries. Let's face it, Bloomington is blessed with an abundant supply of bourgeoisie food. You are not going to get locally-roasted coffee, Indiana maple syrup, a vegetarian-separated fryer, or organic milk for your coffee - you will get eggs cooked to absolute perfection, potatoes that are both soft and crispy, and you will do this at a great price. Because of this, I think it deserves 4 stars. Logistic Details: The restaurant is on one end of the building and the lounge is on the other. Although the restaurant is smoke-free, some smoke can waft down the hall from the lounge - so if you are allergic, this might not be the place for you - that being said, I am smoke-sensitive but was fine. Although I paid in cash, I did see a credit card machine. I don't know the hours but they are opened on Sundays, for breakfast and also in the evening for the music acts in the lounge. What a sweet, country-loving place! There are absolutely not enough of these places and that can explain why they are so far away from downtown Bloomington. Grandma and Grandpa made me feel right at home, politely and comfortingly yelling over the counter if we'd like mayo on our sandwich. I come to The Cabin multiple times a week great food from Kiana, the cook there. Great people all the way from staff to customers.

My friends and I are semi-regular faces at the Cabin, and some of the few students that come down from the Indiana University campus to this hidden gem, and we don't mind that one bit. Jake the owner is hilarious and does a great job keeping customers happy. The kitchen is almost always open for late night chicken, fries, etc. after a few beers, but they also have great Hoosier breakfast foods as well. Shannon is always very sweet and puts up with lots of different characters at the bar. Jimmy is just someone you have to meet and listen to a few jokes. Food and drinks are cheap, the atmosphere is traditional roadhouse bar and if you like that it's excellent. The building is old, the floors creek, the place isn't perfect but neither are the people that come in to drink, but I take all my friends that come to Bloomington down for a night to enjoy the place. Just watch out for some of the noises that come out of the stage on Karaoke night... read more

The food here was very good. We had a tenderloin and a BLT. Like some of the other reviews say the service is not the fastest, but you shouldn't come to a little cabin and expect fast service. You come expecting quality and that's what you get. All the staff was very nice and helpful. We will be back and recommend anyone stop in and relax a bit with some good food. read more

A generation ago, saying, "just like Grandma used to make," was a real compliment. When I say that now, I think more of the grandma of the 80's who wasn't as much of a cook as a "microwaver". The Cabin Restaurant and Lounge was a lot like this variety of kitchen where the freezer and microwave are the two most used appliances. The oven functions as more of a storage area that you're not allowed dirty with use. After looking over the variety of round frozen items described on the menu, I decided on the country fried steak. The deep fryer brought this grey cylinder to a reasonable temperature with the consistency of wood and a faint taste best described as freezer burn. The macaroni salad clung to the fork with the determination of snot not quite ready to let go. And the dinner roll was nuked to an interesting temperature rendering it warm in the center, cold on the outside, dense as a tire, and "toasted" on the top. Even the "buttery spread" had no hope in making it edible. I was served with one of my fellow patrons who ordered the same thing I did. We looked at each other when the food arrived silently saying, "I'll eat it if you do." Our third fellow patron was left to wait for her bowl of beans and ham while we ate. She hoped the waitress had forgotten her order so she wouldn't be damned to eat with us, but alas the food arrived. It must have taken some extra time in the microwave but the bowl of goop remained maddeningly lukewarm in the center. Given the wait for the beans, I was blessed with the opportunity to order a slice of turtle pie while we finished lunch. Perhaps I was given two slices because the cook felt some remorse for what they had whipped up for the only three patrons in the restaurant at 12:30 pm. I must say, the store bought pie was just fine. Maybe the country fried steak lowered my standards, or maybe I was just hoping so hard for something palatable that I made it so. The cook called out for the waitress to bring over a can of green beans as we finished our lunch and headed out $30 poorer. read more
