At at Hito Yatai tonight with a group of 6. Very personal service. I liked the ambience ---the place has a pleasing vibe, supported by an apparently happy clientele ( as I looked around at other diners) and a simple but pleasing interior. Our food was excellent--from the okonomiyaki, to the beef skewers, to the trio of fish on a sushimi plate (very fresh, flavorful, tender), and the multiple rolls we ordered. We also shared a sake recommended by the owner---apparently a choice from a large sake tasting the owners attended. I was pleased, not that I'm a sake expert. I can't wait to return! read more

3 all around for ambiance, service, and food. Probably a 2 for price. The ambiance is nice when you walk in, but it seems very... unfinished. Like if someone did a really good job at dressing up the inside of a doughnut store, but it still held that doughnut store vibe. Service was nice when we got it, but they we're definitely understaffed in front and back, and the waitresses looked visibly stressed. We tried a little bit of everything from the menu. The food was sort of what you would expect from a decent sushi restaurant in this area, but a little less polished (and definitely not what the restaurant's feel or brand is trying to portray). Lastly the prices. While the rolls were adequately priced, the entree's and nigiri were exceptionally expensive - for one piece of nigiri nonetheless. Wow, the reviews don't lie about how incredible the food here is. On par with Kru and Southpaw for sushi quality without quite as high a price tag. Yatai roll was outstanding, and their spicy tuna is the best I've ever had on the west coast. Low key ambiance and friendly service. A warning: Do NOT come here if you're in rush. It took a good 30 minutes for our three rolls to be prepared, because there's one sushi chef behind the counter and he isn't compromising on quality! Seriously though, their staff:table ratio overall is a bit lacking. No one refilled our water the entire meal. During peak rush around 7PM, we watched a couple sit down next to us and then decide to leave 15 minutes later because they still hadn't been served water or had their orders taken. We will definitely be back! But probably on a weeknight when it's a bit less crowded. read more

Hm, the interior looks nice and but the service is way too slow. I ordered online and waited about 30 min before heading out to pick up since it said it should take 25 minutes or so. I showed up and they said it would take a few more minutes. It was about another 35 minutes before I finally picked up my 2 orders of Nigiri and a Maki roll lol. So total time about an hour. Observing around the place, there were about 5 tables with guests and 2 couples at the bar. Only one table was actually eating. ************** Update ************** The owner called 05/03/2024 at 9:12am and 10:17am but I was unable to answer. She left a voicemail on the second call. At 12:38pm I called back and spoke with the owner. I told her that what really bothered me about the interaction yesterday is that she told me twice that she would call and resolve it but never did. I told her that all she had to say was that she was committed to providing the refund but unfortunately the restaurant is extremely busy so she will not be able to issue a refund until tomorrow morning. I would have been fine with that. I wouldn't have felt like we were deliberately cheated. I certainly wouldn't have left a 1 star review. She issued a refund via PayPal. She refunded the missing carpaccio, the missing sashimi 15pcs and the chicken teriyaki which had three big undercooked pieces; in addition to that, she provided a $20 courtesy credit. I appreciate the courtesy credit. It is going to take me a couple of days to shake off the bad feelings over this whole situation and probably a few months before we will try them again. Since family members enjoyed the rolls, the salmon teriyaki and the potato/egg salad in the teriyaki dishes I am updating the review from 1 star to 4 stars. ************** Original Review ************** My normal review policy is to leave positive reviews. Today, 05/02/2024, at 4:57pm I walked into Hito Yatai and placed a large order for my family: Chicken Teriyaki, Salmon Teriyaki, Yatai Roll, Rainbow Roll, Dragon Roll, Carpaccio (Hamachi) and Sashimi 15PCS. Total:$156.00. It took till 5:41pm before my food was done, which is understandable, it is a large order, and then I received my order. At 6:13pm I arrived home (Natomas), and we found that they FAILED to include the Carpaccio (Hamachi) $16 and the Sashimi 15pcs $45. At 6:15pm I called Hito Yatai and the owner said "Oh yeah they're still here. I put them in the fridge for you and I forgot to take them out for you. I'm so sorry. Do you live far away?" I said "Yes, Natomas." She said "I am going to give you a refund. I will call you in one hour." An hour came and went, no call. At 7:20pm, I called her back and after one ring my phone was immediately forwarded to the voicemail of another phone number. I immediately called from my husband's phone and since she didn't recognize Abran's phone number she answered and sounded surprised to be talking to me again. The owner reiterated that she would process a refund and call me when it was done. I asked when that would be and she said 9pm. It is 11:32pm and there's been no call, just a stomach ache from some undercooked chicken teriyaki pieces. I had to split my son's chicken teriyaki and while his half was cooked some of the pieces in my half weren't fully cooked. Everyone had to share food since we didn't receive all of the food that we paid for. Mistakes happen, and I have no problem forgiving a mistake that is corrected. We are all imperfect and I do not believe in writing a bad review over a mistake. When you make a mistake that shortchanges a customer food that totals $61 plus tax and you don't fix it, it is inexcusable. It is disrespectful. It is bad business. And legally speaking, it is fraud. read more

The menu is a solid combination of sushi and kitchen prepared meals (small bites, a few sharing dishes). Feels unfussy traditional Japanese with California flair - fresh meat/fish, quality produce, balanced flavors, and seasonal. Modern furnishing, but the overall feel is warm and inviting. No giant TVs or music blaring. Our toddlers polished off their tender pork and salmon skewers (panko breaded with sauce in the side) and miso soup. We ordered hamachi kama, okonomiyaki, chawanmushi, the dream fish roll, and nigiris for ourselves. Solid drinks menu too. Service is friendly and efficient. We shared the best hamachi kama, that's worth driving back alone to eat again, comes with crisp and sweet shredded cabbage, grated daikon, a very nicely cooked bowl of rice and miso soup that our toddlers fight over. Served with lemon and light soy sauce based sauce. Hardly used the sauce, the fish is so fresh. Slightly sweet, rich, delicate large moist flakes, and charred salted skin. I scraped the fish clean shamelessly. I have mixed feelings about having this place discovered and get too crowded in some near future. Traditional japanese aged fish meaning the fish does not taste like its come straight from the fridge, more umami. He and my husband had two omikases and I had a teriyaki salmon. Food was better than any place in the area. This is true authentic Japanese food.
