Our experience here was superb! We can't believe after living near this restaurant that we never tried it until now. We are glad we did and we'll probably return due to the freshness of their food. The rainbow roll was just right not too fishy. The chicken teriyaki, miso and edamame also tasted fresh and delicious. Some other sushi places usually have a similar taste or the chicken doesn't taste as fresh but here, the food was of a different quality. The edamame too tasted different with what they called the "spicy edamame". It wasn't your typical chili flake spice; this one tasted like a bit of gochujang or miso paste. It was a nice change from what you normally get at other Japanese places. The inside is just on the smaller scale so if you have a large group, it may not work out especially if they are busy. They also do not have an outdoor area. So, I would say 1-4person group would work. We came on a Friday evening and there was only 1 table of 2 left for us. So, we will definitely be back. I'm from Los Angeles, and every time I come up to Sacramento, Hito Yatai is a must-visit. This was my third time here, (and it happens to be my birthday week) and somehow it gets even better every visit. What I love most is that the menu is always changing with the seasons. There's always something new and exciting to try, and many of the ingredients and fish are sourced directly from Japan. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable about what they're serving... I was amazed when they explained that one of the fish had been raised on a diet that included orange peels. The level of care and attention to detail is incredible. Everything I've had here has been exceptionally fresh and delicious. In fact, I keep bringing more friends and family with me each time because I want everyone to experience it. If you're planning to visit on a Friday, I highly recommend arriving around 5:30 PM if you want a good chance at getting a seat because it's small. This place is absolutely worth it. read more

If you like authentic real Japanese food aka you have been to Japan more than a handful of times and do not care for tourist traps, you will LOVE it here. If you enjoy mikuni and the likes and enjoy your rolls, this might not be the place for ya. You want it at fast food speed, yeah unlikely. Nothing wrong with that but stick to mikuni and other random "sushi" spots and skip writing that bad review due to your personal expectations and experiences, or lack thereof. I love food. I travel for food. I use the Michelin stars as a guide and will never call myself a foodie. If I had to explain it, I'm a food connoisseur. I know when I'm here I want the sushi bar so there's no lag time for the nigiri (many steps to eating nigiri but I'll spare ya and timing is crucial) to touch my tongue. The special dishes are always amazing. I have never tried a roll lol. I travel for food and we all know sushi rolls is an American made concept of fast food "sushi". Very mom and pop and possibly understaffed at times but customer flow can also be extremely inconsistent. Let's all have a bit of compassion and be slightly understanding and come for the best real Japanese food in North America (yes I would know I'm a star chaser without a budget) and an authentic experience akin to Japan. It's incredibly reasonably priced and I would easily pay 3x. But at 3x I might need mood lighting haha. Went here with a friend on a whim because we were out golfing in Carmichael and man am I glad we stumbled into this place. Hands down the best sushi I've had in a long time. I've driven by this place probably a thousand times, and in our ongoing mission to try as many sushi spots as we can, we finally decided to check it out. It's tucked away at the end of one of the many strip malls along Madison Avenue, and after reading some solid reviews, we figured it was worth a shot. First impression? The place actually smelled new -- almost like fresh wood and recent construction -- so I'm wondering if it recently opened or was remodeled. Either way, it had a really nice feel to it. Clean, bright, modern, and a little more "high end" than the average everyday sushi spot around town. You could tell they put a little more thought into the menu than most places do. The food was really good, fresh, and flavorful. Prices were maybe a touch higher than the typical local sushi restaurant, but the quality and overall experience backed it up. Service was friendly and attentive too. Like a lot of great restaurants in the Sacramento area, the outside doesn't really tell you what the inside is like. Being in a strip mall has absolutely nothing to do with how good a restaurant is around here -- it's just where restaurants end up opening. And honestly, one bonus of the strip mall life: there's always plenty of parking. Definitely worth checking out. read more

Early celebration for my brother's birthday and we wanted a good Japanese place that's not too far. Found this new place and read several good reviews from Yelp elites. We decided to try it. We had the okonomiyaki and it was okay. Think my brother could almost make it just as good lol. The premium sashimi was not cheap - 15 pieces for $55, but it was worth it. My mom loved the quality and taste. It seemed that the Dream Fish was popular so we ordered that one, but I did not think it was special. I liked the Red & White roll much better with blue fin tuna. We were still a bit hungry so we got the mixed tempura. It was perfectly fried. I also got a Hokkaido uni and Hokkaido scallop. They were delicious. I must say - their nigiri is on point. That's what I normally would focus on, but my mom likes rolls and other items. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality and taste at this place. This was my friends' and my second time here and as usual, even on a weeknight, the tables and sushi bar seats were full! We made reservations just in case, so good thing we did! The first time we dined in this Japanese gem of a restaurant, we were blown away by the flavors and presentation of their soft shell crab appetizer roll and salmon teriyaki dinner. Service is excellent and the ambiance and decor make us feel as though we are in a home in Japan. This 2nd diving visit,, I decided to try one of their specials posted on their wall chalkboard. Wow, that lobster-mas roll did not disappoint! I am sometimes weary of ordering something that is not what I already enjoyed from past dining experiences, which is salmon teriyaki from Hito Yatai for me. Every bite of this roll had the perfect amount of garlic and mayo flavoring and the lobster and tuna were very fresh! If they have this special roll on the menu next time, I want to devour it again! What's more is the sake we tried was so smooth and with its hint of sweetness, it paired well with this roll, as it enhanced all of the roll ingredients, as the flavors danced on my tongue. A total hidden gem that is going to become our go-to spot for Japanese food. Sacramento does Japanese food (and sushi) so poorly that we simply just don't even bother. Hito Yatai totally surprised and impressed us. Mix Tempura - I am a tempura snob and I haven't had better tempura elsewhere in the Sac area. This is the right batter, perfect dipping sauce, and I love that they use traditional Japanese veggies (kabocha cut to the perfect thickness, Japanese sweet potato, mizuna, okra), and the tempura shrimp tasted so different and fresh - like they literally just caught it. Nigiri - don't sleep on the specials board. 90% of the listed fish were unique and not your standard sushi fish - already a great sign. We had a variety of nigiri, all were super fresh and perfectly cut and seasoned. We also were lucky to get to try the firefly squid which was in season (I've only ever seen it in Japan). Mini-Don - just get it - thank me later. The only thing I might skip is the chawanmushi. I like mine to have the texture of panna cotta and this felt less silky. PS - I already had a good feeling about this place because of the name - we were in fukuoka recently! We will 100% be back soon!! read more

As a religious sushi addict nothing compares to the artistic freedom of the chef/owner Cameron. No where else do we see fresh fish selections and seasonal selections and ESPECIALLY the teriyaki salmon or chicken. Side note, the potatoe salad is so unique. Hidden gem unlocked! We kept seeing this sushi spot pop up on Yelp and finally gave it a try for date night--and we should've come sooner. The menu is refreshingly unique, focusing on nigiri & sashimi with a strong lineup of Japanese staple apps. Fresh inventory, clean flavors, and attention to detail all the way through. We started with uni and flounder nigiri--super fresh. The mixed tempura wasn't your usual veggie lineup either; creative, crunchy, and so good I didn't even get a photo. Probably my favorite dish of the night. Rolls are a make-or-break for me and these were handled beautifully--fluffy, not smashed, exactly how they should be. The Hokkaido roll (spicy tuna, Kani Kama, tempura scallop in soy paper) was the winning combo of the night. We could not recommend this business more! The service was stellar. The interior was very cozy and cute, considering the building space itself. If this restaurant was located in EDH, Folsom, Rocklin or Roseville, they would sell out every night. The food was incredibly fresh and melt in your mouth delicious. A very unassuming storefront - this restaurant is an absolute gem in the Fair Oaks/Carmichael/Rancho area of Sacramento. Relatively recently (past few years) changed over to new ownership - the restaurant features a wife and husband combo that run the front and back of store, respectively. They truly treat this place as if they work here - taking the care to make sure your meal is exactly the experience they plan for. The sushi and nigiri are prepared absolutely perfectly - nicely sliced and prepped pieces of fish, delicate hand rolls, well-crafted specialty rolls that are *not* drowning in sauce like many other restaurants - this place offers one of the most authentic and genuine Japanese cuisine tastings that Sacramento has to offer. While Kru has a lot of flash, this place feels like a local family is making their best meal for you to share with them. Everything is tastefully decorated, the menu is well designed with plenty of sake and beer options, there are non-raw options if you prefer more fully-cooked dishes, and the service is excellent. While it's right on Madison by the busy Home Depot entrance, there is still plenty of strip mall parking and an easy turn-around if you miss the stoplight. Very, very highly recommended. read more

We had only been to Shige's 2-3 times before he retired and we were so bummed because it was the BEST. When we saw Hito Yatai opened and saw the good reviews, we had to try it out. Not much has changed, which is EXCELLENT. The quality, service, and interior are basically unchanged. The food, even when simple, is prepared with care and excellence. These folks know what they're doing! Hito Yatai: A solid roll, good mild crunchy tempura texture, portion, and better fish quality than I usually expect from a roll, which was nice. Savory, slightly sweet from the sauce. I would get it again but I would like to try other menu items before that. Chwanmushi: Comfort breakfast food, great quality, good chunks of shrimp and fish, even flavors. Tastes of the sea but not too salty, fresh. Potato salad: I LOVE Japanese style potato salad. If you have ever had the potato salad they sometimes have at Oz Korean BBQ, it's like that but the quality at Hito Yatai's is better, more fluffy and... Plump? Moist? Anyway, it's a sweeter savory velvety soft dollop of potato salad with egg and corn mixed in (Kewpie instead of mayo, which makes it sweeter also). Served with a side of cabbage salad with an equally slightly sweet mildly chunky sauce, which was also very nice. Will probably get this every time. read more

And I am usually not concerned about quality of service if I'm stoked about the food. But that didn't hold up for me either. It too a very long time to get seated, even though we were told it was a 15 minute wait. It took an exceptionally long time to have our order taken, and even longer for our order to come out. Impressed with the menu and dinner specials. There is WAY better than average sushi at Hito. The quality of fish stands out and the menu options are very traditional which I appreciate. It's nice not seeing mayonnaise smothered over ridiculously named rolls so if that's your jam go elsewhere. Very kind service, to include a young and ambitious owner. It's usually crowded and the kitchen can get backed up but this can happen. I guess my point is to come with patience and kindness. I don't know why I waited so long to try Hito Yatai, but I'm so glad I finally did. The experience I had was top-notch both in terms of service and food quality. The premium sashimi plate featured high quality, fresh, seasonal fish. Also had a piece of the Hokkaido scallop nigiri - I can't remember having a better piece of fresh scallop. Ended the meal with a bowl of the chawanmushi that was also flavorful (but not overdone). As others have said - they use a light touch here to let the food speak for itself. What you get is an unassuming but high quality dining experience. Get here early, take your time, and savor each piece slowly, and I promise you will walk away satisfied and with fresh appreciation for how food ought to be done. read more

Overall the food is 3.5 star but service was just so so.. ... felt the service was pretty slow when we were the first people there and then another couple show up. Server asked me if I wanted tea, I assumed that it was free but unfortunately not..and funny enough that I didn't see hot tea in their menu. The food were good, some was better than others. The beef tendon skewers were very good! Very savory and tender. Okonomiyaki- delicious, very authentic Hatai- good/ fresh hamachi Hokkaido- looks plain but it was good. The tempura scallops was very fresh 5 pieces nigiri- I will skip this. The 5 pieces of fish aren't that special to cost $5 a piece except the chutoro. The chutoro had some chewiness 7 pieces sashimi- good and worth the $25 3 trio tuna- Alamo, chutoro and Otoro... all good. Again, the chutoro was a little chewy and had like what people call "sinew" I notice that the "sushi chef" maybe is inexperience. Notice the cuts were somehow uneven, the cuts they do on the Akami and chutoro was a little weird.. probably that's what I tasted the sinew (chewiness) read more

We ended up getting the last table before it really started picking up. I'd definitely suggest arriving early since they are only open from 4-9pm! Service is fairly quick and we got our food fast as well. We ordered the hamachi carpaccio, japanese rib eye skewers, soft shell crab roll, and the dragon roll. I'd definitely skip the skewers as they were too well done, but the rest were great. The hamachi was super refreshing, especially with the little peppers. The rolls are a little on the small side, but still good proportions. The restaurant is small, but intimate. It can get a little loud sometimes especially with large parties, but nothing too crazy. We will definitely come back to this hidden little gem in Carmichael! read more

If you want exotic fish, octopus prepared differently than normal, or what's allegedly traditional Japanese cooked foods (there were 3 tables of older Japanese patrons so it must be legitimate Japanese small cooked dishes), and you can't wait to pay a lofty price for it, come here. The service on both visits was polite at the tables. Their voices are extremely low and the place is loud. I wanted to dine at the bar, but yesterday they didn't answer the phone because they were too busy. I arrived tonight to be told the two remaining seats were reserved. But they were empty for most of my dining period. They need to resolve their reservation system problem and set up something online. The decor is simple and plain. I like that. The tables feel sticky and gross. They seem to be real wood, treated, but the protective coat is replaced with stickiness from cleaning solvents. It's also unappealing that the savory custard comes with a wooden spoon to eat it. Not enjoyable to eat with. Also my oysters had some shell fragments. Thankfully, I've learned to eat most meat/shelled proteins slowly and carefully. Prior visit late September 2023 the dream fish roll was twice the size as it was tonight. Very disappointing. The nigiri always has liquid on them and/or are torched. I decided to convey no torch and no ponzu sauce, but if it's not smokey tasting, I'll try the liquid on the nigiri. It was nonsense. Do you put A-1 Sauce on a good cut of steak? No. I want my fish pure, clean, delicious. And for the hefty price I paid, it would have been nice if there was a small dollop of pickled wasabe. I appreciate the polite service, but it's been slow for me both visits and the food isn't that spectacular and the sticky tables are gross. Sadly, I don't believe I'll be returning. read more

Dining at Hito Yatai was a refreshingly unique experience. We were a last minute reservation for their omakase option and the owners made it happen despite needing usually a week in advance for the omakase option. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming and the service by the sushi chefs was higher tier. Everyone dish was very fresh, seasoned well, and presented perfectly. Coming back from Japan this past June, I'm confident to say the food, service, and dedication of Hito Yatai was at the level or even higher than what I experienced in Japan.
