Our experience here was superb! We can't believe after living near this restaurant that we never tried it until now. We are glad we did and we'll probably return due to the freshness of their food. The rainbow roll was just right not too fishy. The chicken teriyaki, miso and edamame also tasted fresh and delicious. Some other sushi places usually have a similar taste or the chicken doesn't taste as fresh but here, the food was of a different quality. The edamame too tasted different with what they called the "spicy edamame". It wasn't your typical chili flake spice; this one tasted like a bit of gochujang or miso paste. It was a nice change from what you normally get at other Japanese places. The inside is just on the smaller scale so if you have a large group, it may not work out especially if they are busy. They also do not have an outdoor area. So, I would say 1-4person group would work. We came on a Friday evening and there was only 1 table of 2 left for us. So, we will definitely be back. We recommend this spot if you are in the area and want to eat good quality Japanese food!
I'm from Los Angeles, and every time I come up to Sacramento, Hito Yatai is a must-visit. This was my third time here, (and it happens to be my birthday week) and somehow it gets even better every visit. What I love most is that the menu is always changing with the seasons. There's always something new and exciting to try, and many of the ingredients and fish are sourced directly from Japan. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable about what they're serving... I was amazed when they explained that one of the fish had been raised on a diet that included orange peels. The level of care and attention to detail is incredible. Everything I've had here has been exceptionally fresh and delicious. In fact, I keep bringing more friends and family with me each time because I want everyone to experience it. If you're planning to visit on a Friday, I highly recommend arriving around 5:30 PM if you want a good chance at getting a seat because it's small. This place is absolutely worth it.
Uh still my fav, if anything I have grown to love this place even more. If you like authentic real Japanese food aka you have been to Japan more than a handful of times and do not care for tourist traps, you will LOVE it here. If you enjoy mikuni and the likes and enjoy your rolls, this might not be the place for ya. You want it at fast food speed, yeah unlikely. Nothing wrong with that but stick to mikuni and other random "sushi" spots and skip writing that bad review due to your personal expectations and experiences, or lack thereof. I love food. I travel for food. I use the Michelin stars as a guide and will never call myself a foodie. If I had to explain it, I'm a food connoisseur. I know when I'm here I want the sushi bar so there's no lag time for the nigiri (many steps to eating nigiri but I'll spare ya and timing is crucial) to touch my tongue. The special dishes are always amazing. I have never tried a roll lol. I travel for food and we all know sushi rolls is an American made concept of fast food "sushi". Very mom and pop and possibly understaffed at times but customer flow can also be extremely inconsistent. Let's all have a bit of compassion and be slightly understanding and come for the best real Japanese food in North America (yes I would know I'm a star chaser without a budget) and an authentic experience akin to Japan. It's incredibly reasonably priced and I would easily pay 3x. But at 3x I might need mood lighting haha. Sit at the sushi bar, talk to the chefs, try new things, be open minded and patient, and maybe then you can learn to love this place too.

Early celebration for my brother's birthday and we wanted a good Japanese place that's not too far. Found this new place and read several good reviews from Yelp elites. We decided to try it. We had the okonomiyaki and it was okay. Think my brother could almost make it just as good lol. The premium sashimi was not cheap - 15 pieces for $55, but it was worth it. My mom loved the quality and taste. It seemed that the Dream Fish was popular so we ordered that one, but I did not think it was special. I liked the Red & White roll much better with blue fin tuna. We were still a bit hungry so we got the mixed tempura. It was perfectly fried. I also got a Hokkaido uni and Hokkaido scallop. They were delicious. I must say - their nigiri is on point. That's what I normally would focus on, but my mom likes rolls and other items. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality and taste at this place. Think the sushi chef and one of the servers were Japanese. Not very affordable and not a lot in quantity, but the taste was excellent. I will certainly be back to taste other items.
We had: - chicken teriyaki bento box $20 which came w miso soup, potato salad, salad. Delicious chk terkyaki w thigh meat. - okonomiyaki $9- Delicious and nostalgic. Hard to find in sac! Had green onions in it though so hubby couldn't eat even though waitress told me no green onions. - Nigiri mix 10pc $45- Delicious fresh fish. Again 1 or 2 had green onions and we were promised none. - white yuzu sake $9- not bad - red & white roll special $20- was ok. Probably wouldn't get it again. - echigo sake $9- not bad. Service was super slow once more people came in. Small restaurant but our last roll took forever to come and toddler got restless. Tried to cancel order but supposedly was coming out soon. Overall good for fresh fish sashimi and nigiri. Wouldn't get the rolls again. Would try other bento boxes.
Went here with a friend on a whim because we were out golfing in Carmichael and man am I glad we stumbled into this place. Hands down the best sushi I've had in a long time. They even serve fresh wasabi from half moon bay! My only complaint is that my stomach wasn't able to handle more food than what I ordered! 10/10 will come back
This was my friends' and my second time here and as usual, even on a weeknight, the tables and sushi bar seats were full! We made reservations just in case, so good thing we did! The first time we dined in this Japanese gem of a restaurant, we were blown away by the flavors and presentation of their soft shell crab appetizer roll and salmon teriyaki dinner. Service is excellent and the ambiance and decor make us feel as though we are in a home in Japan. This 2nd diving visit,, I decided to try one of their specials posted on their wall chalkboard. Wow, that lobster-mas roll did not disappoint! I am sometimes weary of ordering something that is not what I already enjoyed from past dining experiences, which is salmon teriyaki from Hito Yatai for me. Every bite of this roll had the perfect amount of garlic and mayo flavoring and the lobster and tuna were very fresh! If they have this special roll on the menu next time, I want to devour it again! What's more is the sake we tried was so smooth and with its hint of sweetness, it paired well with this roll, as it enhanced all of the roll ingredients, as the flavors danced on my tongue. Last time, they ran out of the mango mochi I wanted to try, so I was excited to order both the ube and mango mochi this time. What a perfectly sweet, grand finale to our dinner!
I've driven by this place probably a thousand times, and in our ongoing mission to try as many sushi spots as we can, we finally decided to check it out. It's tucked away at the end of one of the many strip malls along Madison Avenue, and after reading some solid reviews, we figured it was worth a shot. First impression? The place actually smelled new -- almost like fresh wood and recent construction -- so I'm wondering if it recently opened or was remodeled. Either way, it had a really nice feel to it. Clean, bright, modern, and a little more "high end" than the average everyday sushi spot around town. You could tell they put a little more thought into the menu than most places do. The food was really good, fresh, and flavorful. Prices were maybe a touch higher than the typical local sushi restaurant, but the quality and overall experience backed it up. Service was friendly and attentive too. Like a lot of great restaurants in the Sacramento area, the outside doesn't really tell you what the inside is like. Being in a strip mall has absolutely nothing to do with how good a restaurant is around here -- it's just where restaurants end up opening. And honestly, one bonus of the strip mall life: there's always plenty of parking. Definitely worth checking out.
Took myself on a solo date for omakase here. Brought a little sudoku to pass the time between courses. IT WAS PERFECT. I loved everything. It restored my sanity and health. Especially when a loud bass playing music enthusiast almost ruined the night and a fellow diner stepped out to save the day and politely ask them to drop a few thousand decibels. Amazing omakase and saved from tinnitus. 500/5 stars!
Hidden gem unlocked! We kept seeing this sushi spot pop up on Yelp and finally gave it a try for date night--and we should've come sooner. The menu is refreshingly unique, focusing on nigiri & sashimi with a strong lineup of Japanese staple apps. Fresh inventory, clean flavors, and attention to detail all the way through. We started with uni and flounder nigiri--super fresh. The mixed tempura wasn't your usual veggie lineup either; creative, crunchy, and so good I didn't even get a photo. Probably my favorite dish of the night. Rolls are a make-or-break for me and these were handled beautifully--fluffy, not smashed, exactly how they should be. The Hokkaido roll (spicy tuna, Kani Kama, tempura scallop in soy paper) was the winning combo of the night. Tucked away on Madison & Fair Oaks with easy parking, this spot feels like one of those under-the-radar gems that get you excited about "finding it first." Already planning our next visit to keep working through the menu.
My wife and I tried Hito Yatai for the first time last night and enjoyed every bite. From the exquisite sunomono to the rolls and the amazing nigiri every bite was perfect. The service was attentive and the ambiance was cozy and classy. We have tried many sushi shops in the area and in other Northern California towns and this was our favorite. If you enjoy sushi please give Hito Yatai a visit. You won't regret it.
My daughter's favorite fresh sushi restaurant. I ordered to pick up for us and the coziness, cleanliness, sushi bar and friendliness of the owners was very welcoming. The food is first rate & sooo fresh. We had chicken teriyaki, rainbow roll, California roll, yatai roll and miso soup. The owners said they will be on vacation soon. So I told pics to share. Will be returning again! Highly recommend!

When Shige Sushi closed down we didn't really expect there to be a worthy successor, but guess what? Hito Yatai is definitely that worthy successor. We finally managed to visit last night and we were thoroughly impressed. The interior has been redone in a suitably minimalist style. Very clean and orderly and pleasing to the eye. The service is very friendly and personable. We were told more than once that we were appreciated which felt nice. The real star is the food. We ordered sunomono, veggie tempura, the Hokkaido roll and a special roll (Red and White roll). The sunomono was delicately seasoned and the shrimp were very fresh and sweet. So good. The veggie tempura was nice and crisp and included a couple of unusual ingredients - okra and parsley - which we really enjoyed. The flavors of the two rolls were amazing. No goopy sweet sauces on these, just fresh ingredients expertly prepared and served. We definitely recommend the Hokkaido roll (it's on the regular menu) and I would definitely trust the chef's specials based on last night's experience. This will be our go-to when we want excellent sushi. read more

We finally got to stop by to try this place. They are only open a few hours for dinner. They have nice specials, including some authentic okonomiyaki. Their beef tendon skewers was very delicious. The Hakkaido roll was pretty good too. read more

What a bummer!! Came in with my boyfriend for a much needed sushi date. A large party got seated before us, so we sat at the bar. It was cool to watch, but the sushi chefs seemed more invested in taking shots with the other patrons than getting our order ready. We ordered the potstickers appetizer, dream fish roll, and a 10 piece Nigiri. The dream fish came out, and I wasn't a fan of the flavor- so I sat and waited for the potsticker appetizer which never came out. We had to remind them three times, as they gave it to the patrons taking shots with them on accident, I also tried to order a different roll that they never made. Somehow paid $91 and left barely having eaten. My boyfriend did enjoy his nigiri. Super disappointing. read more

I've finally found my favorite sushi restaurant in the Carmichael area, and it's not even close. Each time I've been to Hito Yatai, I've been truly impressed by the quality and variation of fish they serve. I've been here a couple of times now and can confidently say it'll be one of the sushi spots I have in rotation. The remodel upon change of ownership is nice. I did wish they did not have the lights on so bright as all that artificial blue light messes with the circadian rhythm. I prefer restaurants with a bit of a dimmer setting. However, sitting at the bar helps a little bit with that problem. Fish here imo is on the more fresh side. It is buttery and delicious. I've had sushi where I can taste the ice in the fish and have since been on the search for restaurants that care more about quality than making a large profit. The dream roll was alright. I would probably never order it again. I love the rainbow roll. I've gotten that one every single time. Chu toro and negitoro is a must try here. The Yatai roll was good and what caught me by surprise was the Dragon roll. I normally do not like unagi or dragon rolls for that matter but the way they torched and did just a thin layer of unagi was the ticket! The tonkatsu was a really thick cut of meat and surprisingly cooked tender. We did wish the crust was a bit crispier. Chicken teriyaki was just alright. I'd pick tonkatsu over the teriyaki for sure. Also before I forget, the wagyu asparagus is so delish! Another dish we order each time. Overall, I am happy to have found another small business to support and can't wait to try the rest of the menu this coming year. read more

Hito Yatai is a hidden gem in Sacramento. My friend recommended this place so we met for dinner. As we entered, we were greeted and welcomed so warmly with kindness. The interior is clean, modern yet contemporary. The menu is straightforward which shows more focus on the quality of your food more than the amount of selections available. They also have daily specials and their selection of nigiri. We ordered the Croquette, Potstickers, Aged Chutoro, Dream Fish Roll, Rainbow Roll, Dragon Roll, Yatai Roll and Chicken Teriyaki. Every I listed was absolutely delicious. Every roll and dish ordered was unique in its own way and complimented each other. Service provided was amazing and helpful. The timing of each plate was perfect, not rushed at all. It showed the attention of detail of their culinary skills with each plate arriving to our table. If I could give Hito Yatai more than 5 Stars I would. I highly recommend this sushi restaurant. You won't regret it Thank you Chefs and Staff for a wonderful and beautiful experience!! read more

Best Sushi Place in Mid Valley. Couldn't imagine this sushi place have the most traditional ways to serve sushi and dinner plate. No questions ask on food quality, choices of fish and way of the food presentation and serve. The chef is professional and friendly! Very decent price you couldn't find it anywhere in Mid Valley or Bay Area. Variety of special dish and the kitchen food will surprise you! If you know Sacramento sushi then you might get my reference that this place reminds me of early days Kru before they got trendy and upscale. This place doesn't serve run of the mill frozen gyoza and the standard trio of salmon, maguro and hamachi. They have interesting choices of fresh fish of the day served nigiri style. I had nigiri of barracuda (kamasu), ocean trout and toro zuke. These were all served beautifully and tasted fresh! My husband had the dream roll which excluded rice, which was interesting. Our most favorite items of the night were the gyoza and Saikyo Yaki which is their miso black cod. The gyoza were clearly hand made with chunks of ingredients and perfectly cooked. By far, the most amazing star of the show was the Saikyo Yaki black cod. The fish was perfectly prepared, deliciously marinated and absolutely delicious. My husband said that this was the best fish dish he had ever had. We drank their iced green tea, which actually tasted like green tea. The ambience of the restaurant is casual. You'd fit in wearing a pair of shorts or jeans. The restaurant is also small, so I imagine as word spreads about this place we might start seeing it get pretty busy. We tried this restaurant on recommendation from friends. We loved it. Our server was new and gaining experience so we were patient. We sat at the Sushi Bar and watched the chef prep his dishes. Our food was reasonably priced and very good. We'll be back. read more
