The Not Husband and I decided to have an Adventure Day on Sunday and this place popped up as new and close by. When we arrived another couple had wandered in as well. HipBao claims most things are made in house. I want to believe that but what came to us in the basket of six was chewy, cool or cold as if they had been microwaved. I was disappointed. The pot stickers were rather tasty and seemed fresh. They were hot and nicely presented. I would order them again. Then I am not sure where it came from but the very nice waiter/cashier brought us a fresh, hot vegetarian bun. This was a complete departure from the first basket they brought to us. This was soft and pillow-y and very delicious! There were five parties in the place, NH and myself, the other couple who arrived the same time we did and three Asian parties. If the local community is coming out to support and spend their money here, you know they are on to something. I will go back in a couple of weeks once they have worked all the kinks out. I was really excited to try this place because the food looked really good online. But I should've turned around as soon as I stepped in. A restaurant that has no one in it by 5:30 is a bad sign. They said they were out of something I had ordered online and asked if I'd like to swap it out for something else. I said yes. I proceeded to watch them take a bag of frozen bao out of the freezer, take it to the back, and heard the microwave whirling for 2-3 min before she brought it out to me. And when I saw the bag, it wasn't even like they had made the bao, frozen it, and made it easy to warm up. I would've accepted that. It was something just from the Asian market. Something I could've warmed up at home, and for cheaper. We also got some noodle soups...they didn't taste good. And something upset my boyfriends stomach and it all came back up a few hours later....sadly it smelled the exact same coming back up. Would not recommend at all. read more

So good! Full disclosure, my boyfriend and I ordered it for takeout so I don't know anything about the dining experience. We called about 20 minutes before picking it up. The man who picked up was very polite and answered our questions. I didn't know much about bao before this. We decided to order a bit of almost very type. The juicy beef Shangai steam-fried Bao was definitely my favorite. Highly recommend trying that. My least favorite was the red bean paste one, but that was just because I expected it to be sweeter. Had ran across this restaurant due to its mislabeling of "Dim Sum" which they do not serve. I am always a sucker for handmade dumplings and had to make a trip with the family. We first tried the beef noodle soup and the minced pork noodles. The beef noodle soup was ok, I feel as if it lacked flavor. The minced pork noodle on the other hand had great flavor in which I would order again. We got a couple Baos and Shanghai baos. The regular baos were also lacking flavor, are they truly handmade as well? The shanghai baos were great, the pan fried adds a different flavor profile which makes it stand out. The dumplings were also good, decent amount of filling- can totally tell they are handmade. Goes very well with the hot chili oil.---you can also get them frozen to take home. Overall good food. One thing that is weird..everything is paper except the noodle bowls, including your drink cups. Service is just like a typical Asian restaurant, lack there of. *review update* I think this place has potential but it is currently a solid 3 Star for me. I understand they are still new though so maybe sometime in the future I can try it again. The second time I went I ordered the minced pork noodle soup with 2 buns and and order of pot stickers. The buns came out right after I ordered so they were clearly just reheated. They weren't very hot... I didn't find anything special about the buns but I was hoping they would be the winner since Bao is in the name of the restaurant. The minced pork noodle soup was good. I liked the soup but they didn't give much of it. They also didn't give a spoon. When I asked for one last time I was given an actual soup spoon. This time she just brought out more small plastic spoons. I'd recommend they provide actual soup spoons with their noodle soups. The potstickers were decent but it didn't have a lot of filling so they weren't very satisfying. --------------------- Service was good. I got the beef noodle soup and the *special* Chinese sandwich. I was visiting from California so this review may be a bit unfair. I thought the noodles were average. The soup was pretty good and flavorful. If they used handmade noodles I'm sure the beef noodle soup would be wonderful. I was pleasantly surprised by the Chinese sandwich. I was deciding on whether to try the special or to try the buns but the cashier recommended the sandwich. When I got it I was wary. It didn't look the most appetizing since I'm not a fan of too much scallions and cilantro but each mouthful was actually really good! So, my wife wanted a sub which is right next store. I saw the shop and ran in while she waited in the drive through. The place wasn't anything exciting on the inside, for some reason I had the image in my head of something else. It was bare essential. I understand that with everything going on a small place needs to cut corners but you can do it to much. I got an order of Pork Potstickers, I think it was 8 or 10 but it took twenty minutes. They didn't taste better than what you get frozen from your grocer or any regular Chinese restaurant. It was disappointing because my kids would love to go. read more

I had heard the Bao was amazing, but I am going to describe it as good. And when I say good, just a step above what they sell in the Trader Joe's freezer section (no disrespect, I live there LOL). I'm giving this place 5 stars, because I want it to stay open!!! There are some very very tasty things at this restaurant, and I would hate to see them not succeed. We have been twice. My favorite things were the beef noodle soup (complete with some tasty bits of tendon and a splash of spice!), steamed dumplings, shanghai panfried bao, and potstickers. i LOVE that they are made from scratch! they hit the spot, and are better than buying them from the chinese market. And way too easy to consume! As for the condiment stand, I sort of wish there was some fresh cilantro and ginger available. I also ordered the Pork Bao and Beijing noodle. Not my favorites. The pork bao came out a little too fast to be steamed (tho, we ordered only one)...and it didn't have much veg. The beijing noodle had so-so noodles. Could be much better with a more al-dente texture, or altogether different kind of noodle? The sauce was also so-so. SO, constructive criticism. I would give this place 6 stars if they had more vegetables!! My bowels be grateful, and my mom guilt assuaged--if there were options like stir-fried bok-choy, or Kong-xing-cai, or snow pea tips (or snow peas!), or spinach,...or even stir fried //(steamed!) broccoli? And I would totally buy a cold tofu side dish, or kimchi, or seaweed? Some of these things could be stored in the fridge, and easy to pop out and serve. I only discovered this place recently during the pandemic, so I don't have the experience of sitting in. I had never had Bao and was very excited to hear Omaha had a restaurant where I could try it. Based off previous reviews, I'd say they improved the ratio of meat to bun. The spices were mild, enough to provide flavor and not overwhelm and the bun was soft and spongy. I was pleasantly surprised to see scallion pancakes on the menu, and they are currently my favorite item there. Simplicity at its best, scallion pancakes are made with flour, oil, and scallions. They are fried with a crispy, flaky outside/edge, and a chewy center. It is one of the best, if not most greasy, comfort foods. Some comments on the interior: I didn't get the chance to sit in, but I saw a lot of people criticizing the experience. Having traveled all over in and out of the states, it's not uncommon for many non-western family restaurants to not be much for the eye. The point is the food they provide. (Take street foods or holes-in-the-walls, for example.) If you go in expecting much as far as looks, you'll be disappointed, but I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the food. I heard about this place on a Facebook group and was super excited to try their vegetarian options. When I saw they only charged $1.50 delivery I ordered all of the veggie items! Everything is delicious. It's been hard finding good veggie potstickers and dumpling soup. I've never had Bao before but I found it tasty with the spicier red sauce that came with. I read mixed reviews on this place and decided to visit the establishment during the lunch hour. There is plenty of parking in front of the restaurant and the appearance is very clean inside and out. I was greeted promptly and ordered the Beijing noodles and an order of the beef pot stickers. Many complaints on Yelp were registered about the wait time and I had no issues with this since I was one of the few in the restaurant. The noodles came out first. They are very tasty but take your time making sure all the noodles are well mixed with the sauce before you start to eat. The pot stickers came out 10 minutes later. A warning that the sauce is very spicy, which I prefer but to others, this will be a big surprise. Overall, good fresh food and pleasant experience. read more

I been wanting to try this place for a while now so decided to stop on a Saturday. Pulled in the parking lot at 11:10 am and the doors were locked , checking the sign for confirmation it was listed at opening at 11:00. I sat in my car for a whole figuring out where I would go instead and around 11:25 the open sign came on. A few minutes later I went inside and no one was at the counter. Stood there for about 5 minutes before a staff member came around the corner. I ordered Beef Fried Bao and pork dumplings her comment was " oh you want to order that too ?" Not sure why she asked that but ok . She said it would be about 15 minutes which was true to her word. I really was hoping upon hope for the best but I really did not love it . The meat inside the Bao was just a clump like a tiny little meatball and if you missed biting into it it would fall out. The dumplings were ok , I would soak them in the soup base to make it more juicy . The highlight was the dipping sauce , a little spicy but not overwhelming. I am not sure if I were to go back, would love to give it another try but I think the outcome with the food will be about the same . read more

Love this place. We got chicken and pork steamed bao and beef fried bao, veggie dumplings and pork noodles to go. Everything was delicious. The bao dough was less sweet than I have had in the past and I really like it more savory. The noodles were spicy, loaded with crumbled pork and fresh veggies. The left overs heat up really well and cold bao are also nice snacks. I'll definitely make this a go to for take out. read more

Hipbao has great traditional Chinese bao and cold Szechuan pork noodles. The people who are complaining about the bao not being good after taking it home don't realize that bao is only made to be eaten fresh. It'll get soggy and oily if it sits in a styrofoam container. The staff did mention that you can buy the frozen bao from them, which I definitely plan on doing for New Year. read more

This could be almost be 4 stars. My daughter wanted some steamed buns or bao. She loves their steamed pork bao. I agree they are pretty good especially with the dipping sauce. I tried the dumpling soup which the broth had no flavor. I poured the soy sauce and vinegar that was on the table and salt to make it good. Dumpling/potstickers were good. The atmosphere is pretty plain. We had to get more bao to go since my daughter loves them. read more

Sadly, nothing about our experience with HIPBAO was good. We ordered takeout, arrived almost exactly at their time estimate, and when we checked the food in our car, all the bao we ordered was cold, not like lukewarm but actually cold. We called back to try and get this fixed but they offered us store credit instead exchanging our cold food for hot food? We were already turning around to go back and exchange our cold food for hot food, so we stopped back in to talk to them and got our bao reordered. We ordered a variety of bao and potstickers, some with meat and some vegetable ones. When we got our new order, it was hot, but was not as good as we hoped it would be, not even close. The bao dough was extremely thick and the filling was definitely lacking. The veggie bao and the veggie potstickers had the same filling, both barely flavorful. We didn't even end up eating a third of the food we ordered because we just didn't want it. So...we will not be trying HIPBAO again, probably ever. read more

As I'm placing my order for 6 bao (8.99) and a side of cold noodles (5.99), I notice a guy happily hacking away at a piece of meat just off of the kitchen, which confirmed my hope - bao made from scratch and not reheated from pre-made frozen. Tried the pork & napa cabbage, teriyaki chicken, curry beef and vegetarian which resulted in varying favorites. I continue to prefer the traditional pork, while my dining companion preferred the curry beef. Teriyaki chicken, in my opinion, we meh - primarily because I'm not a fan of teriyaki sauce or chicken for the matter. The noodle salad was just OK, but made better when I got home and doctored up a bit more sauce to brighten the flavor. Of all of the items we ate, not kidding, our favorite was their homemade chili sauce. Just spicy enough with a bit of flavor, it was good on everything...including the noodle salad. read more

HIPBAO has potential, but it needs a bit of work. Restaurant is sparsely decorated. The tables were sticky. There needs to be background music-- it was awkward having to listen to others speak in hushed tones because you can hear everything in the silence. One man came up and joked, "You guys need a stereo in here." We ordered the chicken-celery and beef-onion dumplings and the juicy pork bao. The juicy pork steam-fried bao was really good, but the chicken and beef dumplings were bland. They also did not provide small plates to share, as most people do when eating dim sum, so we had to catch all the juices with napkins, hence the sticky tables. I understand this place is new, and there will be a few bumps. But I genuinely hope that they continue to improve. Since my favorite dim sum restaurant in Omaha closed, I'm on the prowl. read more

This was my first time trying bao. So yummy! Talk about comfort food! I got the 6 piece and tried one of everything. My favorites were juicy pork and curry beef. But they all were delicious. I also tried the Beef Noodle. It was very savory and a huge portion. My husband and I split it and were stuffed. So I went based on an online recommendation (because I love me a good potsticker and it's so hard to find good ones anymore) but I just can't bring myself to like this place. The service was good and my food did come out freshly made, but that's about it for the "plus" column. I ordered the pork potstickers, and they were okay--if a bit greasy and underfilled--but I was so let down by the dipping sauce! Usually that makes or breaks it for me, and I can't believe they go through all the trouble of making the stickers by hand and then drop the ball by pouring teriyaki sauce out of a jug to dip them! (And not even good teriyaki sauce at that--it was basically salt water.) All I tasted was salt. :( read more

Loved this place! wonderful dumplings and noodle combos. We went on a Wednesday night and had the place to ourselves. The service was great and helped us pick out what we wanted. Prices where perfect compared to serving sizes in my humble opinion. Get the dumpling sampler and try all the flavors. The sauces where really good and added a savory side. Many reviews rank this place low. I mean you really get what you pay for. keep atmosphere expectations low and just go for the quality Asian cuisine at a great price. read more

Food was good! Dumplings are exceptional. We ordered the fried and steamed chicken bao.

We were OVERCHARGED and had to deal with an ANTAGONISTIC worker with a language barrier (no shame in having a language barrier, but if you need help, get it! Don't screw over your customers!!!) who charged us for twice what we ordered and then didn't even deliver what we ordered! It was an unethical NIGHTMARE! The dumplings and bao are delicious (not the red bean bao...that one unfortunately does have the texture of microwaved bread but the others are really great) and if the younger employees are taking the order then it'll probably be okay, but if you can't just order without there being an issue what's the point?! read more

Little small restaurant located a block south of 84th and Center. It is easy to pass by if you're not looking for it. They have a small selection of Bao, potstickers, noodles, and dumplings to choose from, including vegetarian options. Soda is available in cans, but they do have bottomless refills on ice tea and water. The Bao is wonderful. I would personally compare it to a runza, but the dough seemed to taste sweeter and was softer. Not as much filling, but still very tasty. Their noodle bowls are huge and delightfully delicious. I highly recommend you add a bit of their chili oil to it. They have options for taking home frozen potstickers and also do catering. The only problem I encountered was an order mixup. The group I was dining with added on an additional two Bao to their meals, each different flavors. When our meals came out, all our Bao were mixed up. Seems they need to work on organization a little, but it didn't bother us because they were delicious. Highly recommend you give this place a try! read more
