We had one of our Supper Club group outings at Hip Bao a while back, and I have ordered delivery orders from them many times since. Each and every time, it has been consistently delicious and affordable! The ambiance when eating in is very colorful and fun. The staff we interacted with were all great about any questions we had or recommendations we asked for. We started with the Pork Potstickers. They were juicy and full of meat (no skimping, here!) that was perfectly cooked, along with plenty of sauce for dipping. Another starter we tried as the Dumpling Soup that comes inside a dumpling and gooshes out when you cut into it. The soup inside was salty and delicious, and I loved the style it was served in. Our last starter was the Beijing Noodle Soup. It came with Asian noodles, minced bits of pork, and lots of shredded veggies. It reminded me of a few other ramens I've had, but with a twist on it, as the meat was minced so it was a lot easier to have a bit of the meat in each bite/slurp! After our starters and soups, we obviously had to get a few bao buns each - I think we probably tried all of them when all was said and done. They have both steamed and fried bao buns, and we tried both. They definitely had a different texture than each other, but I liked them both; they were just different styles. My favorite was the pork fried bao bun. I liked the chicken and the beef steamed options too, but the pork seemed to work best as the protein along with the fried bao texture. I would give 0 if I could. I ordered pork bao yesterday and it was horrible. First of all, the bread to meat ratio was laughable; it was a tiny little meat ball surrounded by air. This leads to my second issue. Whenever I've had bao from other places, the meat is tender and well seasoned. The woman who runs the cash register, who I'm assuming is one of the owners, was one of the nicest, sweetest people I've ever met and even brought us out some free cinnamon chips to try that were a better version of Taco Bell's cinnamon twists. I ordered the vegetable fried bao, egg custard bao, and a vegetable spring roll. The egg custard bao was the star of the show for me and I learned I prefer the texture of the steamed bao over the fried so I'll go for the steamed vegetable next time instead. So yummy! We drive by here all the time and have never stopped until today. The woman that runs the restaurant is so nice and the food is so good. Something unique, off 84th and Center ST. To describe Bao, I couldn't give it justice and would recommend searching for Mike Chen or Strictly Dumpling on youtube and Bao. That being said I had a fried beef bao, with pork potstickers and was treated to a cinnamon desert. The dishes were very tasty and not over filling. They also had a vinegar based sauce that was a nice alternative to most soy based sauces that added to the flavor and wasn't overbearing. There was a gentle "clear your sinuses" sensation to the sauce but it wasn't as strong as some hot sauces or horseradish sauces tend to be. The server told me it was the mild one. I have been looking for a bao place in Omaha so I was excited to see how many options they have on their menu! The fried bao were very good but you can see the filling doesn't have much. I still enjoyed it. The dumpling soup I had to add some of the sauce they gave me to the broth since it was really lacking flavor, but once I did that I really liked it! My husband and I came here on a Thursday for lunch. It wasn't too busy, so we got our food within 10 minutes. It was hot, fresh, and tasted wonderful! We started with the crab Rangoon plus sweet and sour sauce. The triangle shape was different, but I loved the crispy edges! We got the juicy pork dumplings, and they were certainly juicy! I love Chinese and love bao (type of Chinese-style dumpling). This place left a lot to be desired. First, the pork dumpling noodle soup. The noodles were like those in a Campbell's chicken noodle can, except this broth didn't have much taste at all. The pork dumplings were tasty and there was a generous amount but I could not finish the soup because of the lack of taste. Next, the steamed-fried pork bao. The bun itself was pretty good and the meat filling not bad but gosh they were essentially empty buns (see picture). Some buns had less filling than that. They do give 6 bao in an order. I was on a work trip and was looking for an authentic dimsum spot for dinner. The lady was so sweet and kind. She got my food ready so quickly and all the food I order for take out was still piping hot when I got back to my hotel. She also made sure I have the dumpling sauce and chili oil in the bag. This spot may not look as appealing outside but what matters is their fresh hand made dumplings and baos that are wrapped so nicely and sure is with passion for this type of cuisine. I prefer the steam bao if it's fresh but if I eat it hours later the fried bao is better. The chicken in the bao had a good flavor. Maybe next time I will try to warm the steam bao in the microwave with a damp towel around it and it would taste better if it does get cold. I have a love of all things bao, dumpling and potstickers. Give me all of the dumplings! Hipbao came through! Not pictured is the scallion pancake that we devoured in the car on the drive home. Ordered takeout from Hip Bao as I was craving pork buns. I ended up ordering panfried and steamed pork buns, chicken dumplings, scallion pancakes and custard buns. I'd say it had a bit of a generic supermarket quality but then again it was takeout so things may feel different. The portion was so right, though and fullfilled my craving. Their sauces were bomb and a good side to dip the dumplings and buns in. If you want high-end dim sum or chinese snacks, then this is not the place. I ordered the pork wonton soup and spring rolls, one vegetarian and one pork. Considering that I was the only customer in the store, my food took in inordinately long time to come. The place overall is kind of dirty, the water from the soda fountain tasted like the filter should have been changed a while ago. The front and the back of the house had an unkempt look. The person taking my order, was largely uninterested in my presence, when I came in he neither welcomed me or offered a menu. Maybe he thought I was a regular and needed no greeting or offer of a menu. The vegetarian spring roll was flavorful, spicey and only a little greasy. The pork spring roll was pretty good too, it did not have that extra kick that the veggie roll did and in fact, the veggie was better. However, I thought spring rolls were the ones wrapped in rice paper and fresh veggies. These were more like egg rolls, but I could be wrong, so while I was expecting something different, there were still pretty good and came out fresh and hot. The wonton soup was full of so much flavor and the wontons were decently packed with filling, which was also pretty good. The get 4 stars for food and 2 stars for service and cleanliness. I hate to give 3 stars since the concept is amazing and I 100% love local businesses who want to share their (and in this case, my) culture with the Omaha community- butttt the execution needs just a little tweak to earn my 4-5 star rating. The location is convenient, and there is plenty of parking. The inside is simple, clean, and has a casual vibe. To-go and dine in are equally easy, but it has a more to-go vibe. On my first visit, I tried the chicken, pork and beef bao, as well as the veggie and pork pan fried dumplings. On my next visit I plan to try the noodle dishes. I CAN tell that the items are homemade, which is great. I thought that the dumplings and bao were a little too oily for my liking though, and would prefer them to be dabbed or drained better before serving. Easy fix, I think. As someone with an Asian background, I really appreciate that there is food like this in Omaha! With this in mind, I had somewhat high expectations before trying the food, so I was kind of disappointed due to a few factors. The main two things I think could be improved are the texture of the bao skin and the amount of filling in the bao. The skin on the bao wasn't as soft as I would've preferred, and there wasn't enough meat to create a good ratio of "bread" and meat. However, since these baos are smaller, I can understand that it's difficult to achieve this ratio. On a happier note, I think the dumplings and wontons are pretty well made, and the food overall has pretty good flavor! Also, I ordered online and thought that their online interface was well organized. I've read a couple comments about how "dirty" the restaurant is, and I don't necessarily disagree. However, I actually feel like the inside of the restaurant matches that of many authentic Asian restaurants. While I agree that it's not the cleanest place, it actually gave me a taste of nostalgia because many authentic Chinese restaurants I grew up eating at have a similar vibe. read more

When we got home we were ready to enjoy but as we began to taste the dishes the entire meal left much to be desired. Steamed bao - felt like nothing but dough and the little trace of meat lacked flavor. The pan fried bao was not edible. It was hard and SUPER greasy. The restaurant isn't super inviting--maybe a bit sterile. When we arrived it was empty. The young man at the counter didn't seem super interested in answering any questions. We are familiar with potstickers but not bao. We ordered two orders of potstickers: pork and chicken and the fried pork bao. Previous reviewers loved the sauces that were available. Today, the only "sauce" was chili oil that was extremely hot. I like hot. I could not tolerate this. In addition there was soy sauce and vinegar on the table. The potstickers were fine. Nothing amazing. The ones we make at home are much better. These were fairly greasy. They were served on a coffee filter placed on a paper plate. We weren't given plates to eat on so we used the paper plates under the coffee filters. We were excited to try the pork bao. They were completely burnt on the bottom. Omaha's "Chinese" restaurants are generally terrible: egg foo young, moo goo gai pan, and General Tso's chicken, slathered in syrupy sauce and MSG. That's why HIP BAO is such a standout: authentic Chinese food. I've ordered from UberEats multiple times and have always been pleased. The Beijing Noodles are excellent, with noodles of almost perfect consistency and and the pork+bean paste topping is chock-full of that Chinese je ne said quoi. The bao are delicious, especially just the steamed bao. That being said, as many reviewers on here note, the texture of the bao skin is a bit rubbery and they aren't as fluffy as one would like. Taste-wise, however, they rack up their 5-stars handily, with authentic Chinese flavors. If this restaurant were in a metro with a better selection, I would have given them 4 stars. In Omaha, HIP BAO outshines all of the other pan-Asian wannabes. Are there any other authentic Chinese places in Omaha I'm missing? read more

Ordered the scallion pancakes and was super disappointed. It was so greasy! And they just sprinkled occasionally scallions. The steamed buns remind me of the frozen buns at the market and warmed up. I've tried this place twice now and I'm just not impressed. We've had a few different soups and they all have a good flavor and nice spice to them. The wontons for the wonton soup were almost too much. I appreciated getting so many wontons with my soup but it wasn't a good ratio and I ended up having some left over after finishing my soup, which would be fine except they were too chewy without the soup accompanying them. The steamed bao has been dry both times I tried it. The second time I ended up putting it in my store bought ramen the next day for lunch and it was really good since the dough soaked up a lot of the soup. The spring rolls are good but nothing exceptional. If I go back I would get them again just because I know they're a safe choice here. Over the last 6 years, I lived in New York, and San Francisco where finding bad dim sum is probably harder than finding good dim sum. All the bunz in my mouth all the time.
