Saturday around lunch time. I would never recommend ordering a to go here. Ordered two hit dogs and onion rings. There is only 1 cook. I kid you not it took at least 30 minutes to get my food. Food was good but you can't really screw up hot dogs or onion rings. If you are a person of color......you might be the 1st to step foot in this place. We just ate at Hinson's. Reviews seemed amazing, we are locals to Matthews and enjoy supporting local restaurants, however, we will never be coming back again. It took 60 mins to get food to the table. There was a total of 15 people in the restaurant. My husband's family owns restaurants, that is CRAZY long. We ordered burgers, chicken tenders and fries. There is no reason for it to take that long. Mind you we had a 3 year old with us so pure torture waiting. The people next to us ordered hot dogs and it took them 60 mins to get their food...for hot dogs seriously? Our server was FANTASTIC and brought us a box of toys to entertain our toddler. Food was just okay. I love a hole in the wall restaurant (this was the most hole in the wall I've been to) but if none of your money is going into the facility then the food needs to be fantastic not mediocre and take an hour to make. The onion rings were great but everything else was just okay. Fries tasted like they were from the grocery store. My bbq sandwich I didn't even know it had slaw in it until the end. The meat itself was good but could have been more flavorful IMO. I don't think I would go back. I can get the same quality at south 21 and faster. read more

I really wanted to love this place and give it more than three stars. The reviews led me to think I just found a great new spot to add to the list. I had the special chicken sandwich of the day and my friend got a burger all the way. The sandwiches were surprisingly small, not much bigger than a Bojangles biscuit. They were tasty but again painfully small. We split $16.00 sample basket of 3 sides and that probably wasn't worth the price tag even at half the price. The beers were ice cold and our wait person was fantastic but walking out the door at over $44 for food and a few beers at a dive type bar is tough. read more

This place used to be good. The food still taste good but I was just in there and ordered two garden cheeseburgers and one large fry. I hate to see what the small fry look like because the large was the size of a normal small fry anywhere else. I can't see them even making a cardboard container for fries that was smaller than the one they brought us. But what is worse is the hamburger wasn't much bigger than a sausage patty! I am not exaggerating! And it cost $7.50 and the "large" fries are seven bucks by the time I walked out of there it was $30 for two sodas, two tiny cheeseburgers and the smallest "large" fries that I've ever had in my life. 4 months in and we're here every week. The folks are friendly, the food is the best we've found in Matthews, and the prices very reasonable. Always bring our family when they're in town. The history of the place is great, cool to see this is still family owned and operated since the 50s (same grill from when they opened as well!). The usual is a sweet tea, pepper Jack cheeseburger, and the best crinkle fries in the area. Strongly recommend for those looking for a low-key spot in Matthews. read more

Yelp community, you've let me down! We don't keep secrets from each other!! Hinson's has been in business for more than 60 years and they only have 45 reviews?!?! Here's the deal. It's a total dive, in fact it's the epitome of dive bar. It's hard to tell if they are open or not, just pull on the solid wood door to see if it opens. The front door faces the freeway, so you have to walk around the building to get in. You also have to drive through a wooded area to get to it, so you'll feel like you're lost. But don't worry, it's right next door to a strip club. Did I scare you off yet? We almost left without going in, but we thought they were closed. The staff is super friendly, as were a couple of patrons at the bar. It was a great experience just chatting while the food cooked. The burgers are so fresh, cooked on a little grill with a toasted bun, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, mustard, ketchup and Mayo. This was the freshest, juiciest and tastiest burger. It's so simple, but done right, and priced at $4.50. It's called the Garden Burger, but don't worry, it's not vegetarian, it just has vegetables on it if you choose. This is ultimate hidden gem in the Charlotte-Matthews area. Please check it out and let's represent this place like great food deserves. As with many previous posts, I have driven by this place for a few decades without much thought. I decided on a whim to give it a go and am so happy with that decision. It will now be a very regular stop for me. Food was amazing, place was clean and friendly. Staff was exceptional. It's a family run business and Emmy (sp?) was a sweet and accommodating waitress. A little out of the way but the super friendly atmosphere and cooked fresh burger was totally worth it. I loved being able to watch my burger get cooked right in front of me while sitting at the bar. The burger was served super hot and so fast. I need to go back when I can hang out for a while and order other things off their menu. The atmosphere is very homey and enjoyable, even for someone thats as anxious in public as I am, however the crowd of older people still makes me nervous. Was looking for a place for my family to eat on our way to the beach. Found this wonderful restaurant just by looking on my maps app. Glad we stopped in and ate here. Great service, great food, made to order, and what I would guess always fresh. One of the best experiences I've had in a long time. Don't let the rustic appearance fool you. Everything is fresh made in there. Hand pattied burgers, fresh made slaw, daily made bbq. Mushroom Bacon Swiss Burger was well worth the drive, and the fries where done just right. read more

Excellent! Location is tricky, GPS get you close but the food is off the chain good. Old school burger and hot dog joint. Get the fried pickles with spicy ranch. It's got the perfect amount of kick from the horseradish. Hospitality was great too. They even have live music on occasion. read more

It is a definite dive but those places can be the best. The atmosphere was unique and cool. It was a long wait for take out though. The fried mushrooms were overly oily. The burger was cooked well and tasted good. The hot dog all the way was tasty and well made. The fries were nothing special.
