They are nice but did not mount the tape under tube inside the rim of my wheelchair tire, when they explicitly said they would. The tire popped within days. $40 poorly spent. For anyone looking for a great LBS in union county or in and around Cranford, look no further than Hilltop Bicycle shop. I stopped by last week to inquire about general bike tuneup and repair services for a used bike on Craigslist I was looking to buy and they were super helpful, no disdain or influence to to buy new rather than used and extremely welcoming. When I later bought the bike, I immediately brought it down to Hilltop for service and I was stuck in traffic running late and the stuck around till I got there about 20 min after closing time. Now to the service performed. The bike was extra greased up and shifted poorly and Craig the bike tech did an annual service, degreasef every part, serviced the bottom bracket, cassette, deraileurs, shifters, brakes top to bottom and put on new handlebar cushioned tape wrapping. The bike now looks and RIdes amazing and is perfect in every way, good as new and I couldn't be happier. And the price was reasonable especially given how much time and care they put into it. But in the end, it's customer service and Both Tom (Mgr) and Craig (tech) were super helpful and great communication. Definitely will be back. FYI, here's a pic of my new MASI ride. Gave me a free tire to make up for it at least. Had to bring the bike back a second time because they didn't notice the cassette was bad as well. Not a great tune up job all in all. They accommodated me the same day after calling in the morning to see if they could put my bike together. Thank you for the quick service! Horrible business. I brought my bike there to change a tube and they told me it would be done the next day. Then they would not answer the phone for days at a time. They would finally answer and tell me it would be ready the next day. This went on for about 3 weeks until the guy got an attitude on the phone and said to just come pick up your bike. Simple job to change a tube and they couldn't be straight forward with me. Should've known when I heard him hang up on a lady complaining when I brought the bike in. read more

My family has bought four bikes so far from Hilltop. The first was my mountain bike. Tried a local shop (live next town over) who was pushing a bike that did not fit. Never again. Stoped in Hilltop and immediately felt at ease. They were not trying to push a bike on the floor. Instead, they were trying to find the bike that best met my needs. Fast forward to a recent experience. My son's second bike from them was having issues with the chain popping. Suspect the entry level derailer on the 24" min bike. Brought it in and expected to drop off. However the staff insisted on looking right away and making sure my son had a positive biking experience. Anyone can beat a price but it takes a real shop to meet a high level of service and commitment to the customer experience. I highly recommend Hilltop to everyone I know. read more

So I just recently started road cycling to get my exercise in. Before this I have no experience with road cycling or road bikes at all. Now I want to start off by saying that I did not purchase my bike from Hilltop Bicycles. Since purchasing my bicycle I've been to 3 shops in the Union County area, which is where I reside. Out of the 3, Hilltop Bicycles (Cranford location), was by far the friendliest staff I've dealt with. I felt like I had an issue with my gearing and it turned out to be nothing, however the tech that day took the time to put my bike on the stand and show me what was going on and how to correct it. At no point did I feel like they didn't want to help me due to me being a "Newb". They were helpful and again very friendly which, to me, will make me a return customer for all my future service needs. Unfortunately I can't remember the techs name that helped me but Thank you Hilltop for the great customer service. Its nice when you can walk into a local bike shop, talk about your bike, the places you like to ride and your style of riding and they know EXACTLY what upgrades or new gear you're looking for. Had a great experience with Hilltop Cranford. I had been looking for a specific mountain bike for a long time, and wanted to buy it locally from this shop- Stefan arranged to get the bike transferred from another store for me by the next morning, and the crew spent an hour setting everything up perfectly for me before I was on my way. They answered every question I had, and gave me a lot of great advice. I'd highly recommend the shop; even if you don't live locally, the service is definitely worth the trip. read more

I will not go back to Hilltop Bicycles in Cranford. I needed a new outer tire. They ordered one, I left my bike there and took longer to get than they said and when it was installed, it was a different size (circumference). Went back to get it put right. They said they cannot order the correct tire I need even though the brand (Kenda) shows them as a retailer for that specific tire. They put the old tire back on but refused to remove the labor charge!!! It was not my error I shouldn't have to pay anything. They should have noticed the very visible difference in the sizes. It was a full 1.5 centimeters thinner than the one they replaced and the one I still had on the front. So much for shopping local. I ordered the proper tire from Amazon. read more

Looking over the other reviews, there's a consensus that says this place delivers beyond what's expected and that was definitely my experience. I don't think mine was a typical job for them. It seems that most of their business is selling pretty high end mountain and racing bikes but based on a friend's recommendation, I dropped off my neglected Schwinn Typhoon for a $35 tune up. For $35, it seems that they spent a lot of time on it. The rust which the salesman said wouldn't come off, was miraculously removed almost all over and the wobbly handlebars, dented fenders and loose chain were all beautifully adjusted and repaired with care as if the service person was fixing his/her own bike. Bike looks & feels good after $80 comprehensive tune-up. Staff seems knowledgable and helpful. But their prices seem high. Services I used to get at Cranford Bike (now closed - former owner now works for Hilltop) would cost me half the price at Hilltop. In addition to the tune-up, they charged me labor for a flat tire change and to replace brake pads; things Cranford Bike did not charge extra. May return, but going to shop around for a better prices in the area. read more

A pleasant buying experience & no pressure. Purchased a new Giant "Talon" for my 14 year old sons birthday. The salesman couldn't of been more helpful. When I went in the early afternoon to inquire about the bike one was not on display but was built up when I came back later that evening. I brought in my daughter's bike for repairs because she had an accident on it. The bike needed at least new brakes since they broke off and some bending back and stretching. The employee was very pleasant and knowledgeable about bicycles and knew what needed to be done and tuned up. He provided us a quote and promised the bike during the middle of the week. We received a call when promised and picked it up shortly after. We actually paid $15 less than the the original quote. Just by looking around, they have a nice variety of bikes and accessories for all ages and sizes. I will be back when it's time for a new bike. read more

I don't usually write review cuz I think there is nothing need to be mention since I m dat kind of go-pay-go person. However, I deiced to write this review to let you know what good experience you will get from them. The review is going to be very long tho... I went to 3 bike shops before Hilltop. And dat were 3 very bad experiences tbh. I do MTB a lot but I have no idea about road bike. So I did my research before I go to a bike shop(both the shop and bike). The reason why I choose LBS is that build a good relationship with them will benefit me in the long run. Even I did my research before I go I still need to know it is the bike shop that I can really trust in the long run. So I always start the opening with " I wanna buy my first road bike, could you please help me get one?" The first shop tried to sell $3000 bike to a beginner like me and dat was the cheapest one they introduced. The second one lied to me about they have the model(which they don't) I am asking and waste me 1 hour driving time. The third one was the worst...They tried to sell a used bike as new to me. However, I did my research and notice the model they tried to sell me is 2017 model even they told me it's the newest model(The newest model is 2019) and I also noticed there were heavy scratches on the wheel and frame(both are impossible for a new bike). In general, my experience was so fking damn bad. Maybe cuz I am foreigner so they think they can rip me off? idk Hilltop was the last one I decided to try. I was going to order my bike online if Hilltop failed me like 3 other bike shops. I am so glad they did not fail me at all. Erin was the one who helped me get my bike. Even my broken English cannot stop her help me find the right bike. I start the opening ask for help even I know which one(at that moment) I am looking for... She asked me about the reason I want a road bike and introduced cheap one for me cuz I am a beginner. I feel something different intermediately cuz it seems like she does hear and care what I said. So I told her my real budget and the brand I am looking for. Then she introduced 2 bikes which are on my "Purchase list". Things go very smoothly and happy. However, they don't have the size that I wanted so she placed a new order for me. She also spent a lot of time explaining what I will get and help me find accessories. Well...after I went back home I suddenly regret the bike I just ordered and wanna exchange to another same price bike. So I called them to cancel my original order exchange to another bike. No problem at all. They did it for me and put a tag on a new bike which is in stock to make sure they don't sell it. So I went to Hilltop today again and became a "trouble maker"..in fact, I feel so bad being a "trouble maker". I don't really mean to but cuz 3 very bad experiences I had...It's really hard for me to trust another bike shop dat easy cuz everything went just too smoothly...I ask them to order a new one with the same size and color cuz the 3rd bike shop experience is still hunting me. I did check the bike hang on the wall multiple times and I m sure it's new...but I just can't pass the feeling. It's hard to describe but you will understand if you have the same bad experience like me. My request is not reasonable tbh and I did not expect a positive answer from them. However, even they do not know why I insist order new one rather than get the one in stock(I didn't tell my bad experiences to them). They did it for me. Erin just called someone make sure it's OK for me to order new one even they have one in stock. And now, I am writing my first review and waiting for my new bike : ) This is my whole bike experience in Hilltop Bicycles. From what I experienced...this is the one you can trust in the long run. Can't say enough good about Hilltop Bikes. Sean showed genuine interest in what kind of riding I plan on doing and which bike would be the best fit for me. My first choice was out of stock but he managed to wrangle up a comparable bike that was both newer *and* less expensive. He walked me through all the options on computers, pumps, GPS, gear, etc and never tried to push me to buy something he didn't feel I needed. I took my bike in for a tune up a few day after the shop first opened. Unlike most bike shops, Hilltop has their repair stands out in the open and gives you a your diagnostic right in front of you and explains what they'll be doing so you can understand it easily. While taking a look at my bike, Chris noted that, while I probably could use a tune up, the real problem I was having is that my derailleur was too small for the gears I had installed on my bike. He suggested a longer derailleur and fresh chain and quoted me a fair price. I picked up my bike three days later and it ran better than ever before. Better than when I first got it. These guys have been my shop of record since then, for about a year now, and have continually been excellent every time I've been in. All of the staff is incredibly knowledgeable about bikes and cycling and they have been unfailingly diplomatic and helpful with every idea/problem/question I've brought to them. In short, an excellent local business; glad to have them in town. read more

Had such a lovely experience buying a first bike for my youngest. We've (and by 'we' I mean my dad-who lives in Cranford) bought all of my older son's bikes here as well. The staff is so helpful. I went there recently on two separate occasions. First was to buy clip less shoes. It was my first pair, and I had a few questions that were easily answered. The mechanic/sales rep was very easy going and there was no sales pressure. He got an idea of what type of riding I was going to be doing and made a suggestion based on that. I also purchased a couple of water bottles and he made me aware of a difference in price between two types of them, being honest and saving me a couple of bucks. Also went back this past Saturday after mangling a star nut install on a fork. Shop was pretty busy, but the mechanic took my fork and asked if I'd wait around for a little while. I came back an hour later to a still busy shop, but the mechanic acknowledged me right away and told me I was all ready. $6.41 for a star nut install (including the star nut)!! When I was picking up the fork I also noticed the other mechanic was fixing a hitch for a guys bike trailer. It only took a couple of minutes, and he didn't charge him at all! These guys are honest, sincere, and not pretentious in the least. Great shop, great service. read more

You only get 1 chance to make a first impression and unfortunately I will not be a return customer at Hilltop Bicycles. I had been to this store several times just browsing and I never really got a warm and fuzzy feeling about them but I though those feelings were unsubstantiated and I decided to support my downtown businesses and let them work on a spare bike that I have. For $35 I had a wheel straightened and gears adjusted. Leaving the store, I found that the rear wheel was rubbing against the frame and that the brakes felt very loose. I immediately returned to the store for them to rectify the issues. Then while riding home, I found that the rear gears were not working. After arriving at home, I discovered that the cable to the rear gears was completely loose. At home, I positioned and secured gear cable myself and corrected the issue. Unfortunately for Hilltop, my actual purpose for taking this bike in for servicing was to evaluate their service before taking two high quality bicycles that I own.
