As an avid cyclist it is very difficult to find a great bike shop where people actually know what they're doing. When you find a place like hilltop stick to it, they are friendly, knowledgeable and professional. I've had quite a few repairs done here, and bought a few items too. They even put one of my bike together that I had bought elsewhere. Never had an issue with any of their services, if anything it's quite the opposite. I know I've got a slightly awkward situation - being that I live internationally and I've got to pick up a bike while I'm back visiting the states - but I was literally TRYING to give these guys my money and they were just totally disinterested in helping me work anything out. I was very open and flexible to any options that would have been helpful. They didn't care to return my messages in a timely manner, didn't care to answer my questions, asked probing questions about me that were really none of their business, and in the end turned me away and said to go to another location when I got to the states. I am updating the review as I had received good feedback from the store. I had read good reviews on this shop so I decided to try them out. But I guess it's a hit or miss. I guess I missed. The worst 5 minutes of of telephone conversation I have ever had with sales rep - Dan. The rep is totally unprofessional and impatient. My questions regarding mountain bike were answered with impatient and rude responses. He totally discouraged me to not to come to the store. Perhaps perhaps it was one of the bad day. But I would say that that the person answering the call should be trained or should know how to receive and recommend or sell the bikes. It would make me think that's its not a very customer friendly oriented place. Just sharing my experience. read more

With a caveat...the service was great. Staff was knowledgeable and very helpful in helping me get a great bike for my son. My only concern is with the staff not wearing masks inside the store. I wear a mask to protect them from me exposing them to covid-19, thus my hope is they can do the same from a respect stand point for their customers. If I had a N95 mask that could filter my intake and block exposure for them, I wouldn't be as concerned. However, most customers didn't have that caliber of protection, and given that there isn't adequate testing, nor thorough enough contact tracing for the state - my hope we all can do our part. Again, not comfortable for anyone to have to work with a mask on for 4 hours, but I don't know y'all and y'all don't know me. Let's work together a little bit more. Thanks read more

As of my last and only visit, on July 9, staff at this locations are NOT wearing masks or gloves. On-site staff that day dismissed my questions about their mask policy, and as of today, their customer service hasn't responded to my email inquiring about their mask policy and expressing my concerns. My husband and I ended up ordering our new bikes online from the VERY excellent Brooklyn Habitat, then driving to BK for pick up and outfitting (they have several locations). Staff were all practicing distancing, and wearing masks and gloves at all times. We appreciated this so much and intend to be loyal customers there. The almost total lack of masks by the all-white, mostly male staff at the Summit, NJ location indicates that they do not see how this once-in-a-lifetime virus is infecting and killing black and brown people at higher rates in our community. I intend to spend my money supporting businesses that make it clear they prioritize not just the health of customers, but also the most vulnerable groups within our communities. I'm hopeful this has changed, or will change soon. read more

Very knowledgeable and friendly staff unlike the one in Madison. I went in for cycling shoes. They only had a few pairs in my size but are able to special order in a different color. I will be back. It's a little farther than the Madison store but the staff is what makes the place an enjoyable store to shop in. read more

I hate posting this review, because I really wanted to like this bike shop. In December of 2019, I purchased a 2019 Specialized Fuse here. And the entire process was really smooth. The staff at that time was very accommodating. I took great interest in the fact that I was told the bike did not come with a tubeless setup, but that it was tubeless ready and would be fairly simple to convert over to tubeless whenever I should desire to do so. My first issue with this bike shop actually came after a few rides and I noticed my rear brake was significantly weaker. I took it back to the shop to have the staff there look at it, and they assured me it's normal and the brakes should increase after a few more rides. Well, after another ride and the rear brake getting only weaker, I had another shop look at it. That shop said the line needed to be bleed, and I authorized that shop to do the work. After that the rear brake lever ended up failing completely. I ended up having to purchase a new brake lever since I broke warranty and had another party perform work to the brake. I'm not sure if this was going to happen eventually, or if it was due to the work the second shop did. But I know Hilltop simply refused to even look at it. My second issue with Hilltop goes back to the tubeless setup I was told during purchase was an easy conversion. I decide to have the conversion since I had recently gotten a pinch flat. Well the staff at Hilltop told me the rims weren't tubeless ready, only the tires. And I would need to purchase tubeless ready rims at over $90/rim to convert the bike to tubeless. Well I eventually ended up taking it to a completely different shop from Hilltop and the other shop that looked at my rear brake. This bike shop said "sure we can do that. It shouldn't take more than a half hour." So $50 + tip and a little over a half hour later, my bike was tubeless. Now I understand all these issues are happening during COVID, and businesses are stressed with uncertainty. But that's no excuse to give misinformation at best, or outright lying to a customer at worse. I will not be do business here again. read more

I bought a new bike this year after thinking about it for way too long (Cannondale Synapse). The folks at Hilltop in Summit set me up to demo ride as many as I wanted with no pressure to make a decision. Once I decided, they had everything ready to go in time for the next weekend. When I needed adjustments, they stopped mid-ride to make sure everything was perfect. When I brought the bike to Cranford instead, they drove the parts I needed down there to save me a trip.
