I have a Trek 1000 that I have not ridden in about 15 years and both tires were flat (naturally) so I brought the wheels in to get new tubes and tires. There were two guys there and they both looked over the tires and said they looked fine - even though they were surprised that they were probably 20 years old. They put air in them and I was on my way! New tires, they said, were about $60/each so between that and new tubes and labor it would have been about $200 - which I was ready to spend - but these two great guys told me I didn't need new tires. In my book, customer service doesn't get any better than that and I am very grateful!! When I DO need anything for my bike, I will CERTAINLY use this shop!!! read more

Oooo so I had my bike delivered here and they wanted a surprise $100 to assemble it. I thought I was buying it from an affiliated company.

I can't thank the gentlemen at this bike shop enough. I'm visiting family from VA. My bike wasn't shifting correctly and these guys rapidly diagnosed it and fixed it. They also provided me with a long list of mountain bike trails to check out. Very down to earth. I wish I caught their names because I would list them here. WOW, WOW! My new AETHOS is AMAZING! And the bike fitting I got from Rick Danielsen at Hilltop Cycles in Madison was excellent. All of the adjustments made during my bike fitting appear to be perfect. A new seat was put on (and now my butt never slides forward), the new cleats were assembled correctly on my shoes so I have no knee pain and immediate power to the pedals. The size change made to the handlebar stem was also 'right on.' I am able to get low on the bars without feeling too compact or too stretched. It really feels just right. My experience with Rick and Hilltop Cycles has been so good, we will drive my husbands bike up from FL to get him fitted too. You guys have a lot of expertise in one bike shop. I debated within myself to publish this or not , I waited since 2019 and finally completed the draft as I do not favor badmouthing. I purchased my bicycle from Hilltop Bicycles Madison NJ store. Good is... Friendly and generally nice workforce and Location is good. That is all good thoughts I have for the people who work there. Bad is.. My dissatisfaction is with the bike I purchased, a Giant Defy. I don't even remember their names now, but if they read this review, they would remember me LOL. I was given good and correct advice and guidance, but the bike I tried had gear slippage. I believe it was defective Shimano 105 group set but they said, it needs tuning and the bike will be tuned and fitted once you take the delivery. I also bought Specialized Torch 2 shoes and road bike Shimano cleats set, satisfied. They were short of cleats inventory and had to borrow from other set, I felt strange but I did not care. They did the complementary bike fit, very satisfied. As we all know, 105 group set is still one of the rugged and most cost effective on the market, But mine is not, it makes me mad when it slips and it pains me to this day that for an expensive purchase, with my finances, I am stuck with a lemon that needs adjustment after 4 or 5 rides. I have been going there and they fix it but it starts slipping on my third and forth ride. I have stopped going there now, out of sheer embarrassment. I am not handy and I need to bring it back to a cycle store to get it fixed. It angers me that I have to ride with a defective part and it takes the fun and pleasure out of my ride. My strong advice is to be very very vigilant when you buy your stuff from this store. Recently I shared my two bit with my co worker to decide and buy a road bike, he bought Giant Defy, but I deterred him going to this store and did not recommend this store. (Obviously he asked to go to where I bought my cycle) I will never recommend to anyone for that matter. Hilltop Bicycles is a "Local Bike Shop" (or LBS, for those in the know) with locations in Cranford, Madison and Summit NJ. I bought a road bike in January 2012 from a LBS that's no longer in business, and she sat unloved and basically unused in my garage until this May. I am a swimmer, but I had shoulder surgery with a long recovery last year and will never, ever be a runner, so I brought her out to try my hand at cycling. I joined two local clubs - Morris Area Freewheelers (amazing group - maybe worthy of another Guest Review) and Hilltop - as a way to find organized group rides, because I am fearful of riding alone. I also joined Hilltop because of their strong support of local women's cycling, including a women's only Fondo. However, I had never been into one of their three retail locations until the past two days - Sunday for their Fondo, and yesterday for a bike fitting (both at the Madison shop). I find LBSs to be incredibly intimidating - kind of like hard core running shops. Their employees tend to be ultra-fit, all have like 5% body fat, are super knowledgeable, and very passionate and very focused....and I am none of these things. Plus stuff tends to be crazy expensive. I went for a fitting yesterday, because I was increasingly uncomfortable on my bike - my feet were going numb, my upper back was spasming, and my "unmentionables" were unhappy. I was incredibly nervous about the appointment - I have a very entry level, inexpensive bike and I am quite clearly not a cyclist. Let me tell you - Eric Chernoff is a Bike Fitting God. He made me feel instantly at ease, asked me a ton of questions, was patient, understanding and thorough, and never once made me feel like a beginner or embarrassed talking about my lady parts. I also learned more about cycling form and physics and the Zen of cycling than I could have from any YouTube video. He made some major and minor changes to my cleats and my bike, and I could feel the immediate difference with the first pedal stroke when I got onto the bike on the trainer. He gave her a quick tune up in the store's shop (and taught me stuff - didn't just "do" things without showing me), and I was on my way. I ended up buying a new saddle, which wasn't cheap....but nothing matters more than comfort in that particular area. Best two hours - and best money - I've spent in my brief cycling career. I've ridden since the fitting, and I'm a new woman on my bike - I'm comfortable, much more efficient, pain free, and climbed hills significantly better because of better body position. I love to support local. It was time for a bike and we had heard great things about Hilltop. We stopped in and were warmly greeted. After a few questions and looking around we were perfectly matched with one of their bikes. Although I am sure we paid a little above prices on line we would rather do it in person. We also purchased helmets and a child trailer so he can come along for the ride. What to look for: Personalized service. Friendly, knowledgeable staff. This place needs to train their staff in customer service. They didn't want to help me and than when one guy came over, he was eating in front of me. They didn't try to sell me shoes. I seemed to bother them. Don't patronize this place. Instead go to the one in Summit. read more

I've paid $80 for their Basic Service. According to their website it should include "Clean and Polish Bicycle". When I came to pick up my bike serviceman told me that basic package includes only cleaning the frame. However, my frame was dirty and had oil stains on it. Moreover, the handlebar grips were also dirty with oil. read more

Went to Hilltop still in the initial stages of my bike search so I really didn't plan on buying anything right away. I worked with Liam and was blown away by his knowledge of bikes. Too often these days buying a bike can be like a buying a used car given the limited inventory in entry level price points ("Either you want it or you don't.. I'm going to sell it either way."). This was not the case at Hilltop. There is zero pressure. Liam and Eric were more interested in making sure that I ended up with a bike that fit me and my intended use rather than making the sale. I'm not the easiest person to work with on retail transactions because I'm very picky with colors and other little details, but Liam answered all my questions and made me feel very comfortable with my purchase. He even let me try the bike on the trainer and take it out for a spin prior to purchase. If you're in the market for new bike, I'd highly recommend checking out Hilltop. I'd also recommend asking to work with Liam. We also brought back one of our bikes to have it repaired. Liam took care of it on the spot and at no charge. He also spent some time going through how all the gears worked etc. We didn't even buy the bike at Hilltop-- it's so rare so get such a high level of service at a bike store these days. Eric at the Madison store was super helpful in tracking down the bike, helping me get everything I need and even shipped it to the NYC store to be more convenient for me. Great shop!! My rear shifter cable snapped on me a few weeks ago while I was in the middle if my ride. I was a little worried that I wouldn't make it home but luckily I was a mile away from Hilltop. This was a Saturday and when I got there it was pretty busy. But when I walked in I was helped right away. The mechanic that helped me dropped what he was doing and fixed my bike on the spot knowing that I was in the middle of a ride. I couldn't believe how quickly my bike was repaired. Long story short I was able to finish my ride. This is one of the best experiences I have ever had at a bike shop and I will be sure to return in the future. I rarely write a review but I was blown away by the service I received at Hilltop today. My son fell yesterday and damaged his brakes to the point of not being able to ride it. On a three-day bike trip between Manhattan and Hackettstown, NJ, while riding through Madison, I was having trouble with my chain so I stopped at Hilltop Bicycles. Chris Yeager quickly determined that my chain needed to be replaced and my front derailleur needed to be slightly repositioned. He installed a new chain, repositioned the front derailleur, and adjusted both derailleurs, sending me on my way. The prices for both parts and labor were quite reasonable.
