This store is absolutely fantastic! I stopped by to make a donation, but they were closed outside for a heat break so I went inside to drop my items off. I was so impressed with the store that I did some thrift thing for the first time in a couple of decades. The staff was super helpful and kind, most folks there are volunteers. I was able to find a pin striped suit that fit me for $30. All I have to do is get the pants hemmed because I am short. I also got a couple of shirts, including a KC Royals shirt for five dollars because I didn't have one. Students and teachers get discounts on Friday and seniors 55+ get 25% off on Wednesdays. I love that this store works with people who are transitioning from being unhoused to housed and they let them come in and select whatever they need for their new place with no charges. For this reason, we will be making all of our donations at Hillcrest thrift store from now on. read more

Last two times I've been there dealt with rude employees . This last Friday was the worst . Some old man got on a mega phone and was yelling at customers in the store that they were closing in 30 minutes and the employees there have lives and want to get home to their families . Excuse me jerk, if you don't want to work there than quit !!! If you're terrified of working a few minutes late to deal with customers that are giving you money, you're in the wrong business !! Meanwhile the new store , Savers , next door actually keeps good business hours and doesn't scream rude crap at customers . Very nice and friendly kind as can be, I recently had a very big move and several boxes were misplaced so instead of buying New right away I decided to come here to purchase until I decided what my color scheme was going to be. This place is soooo overpriced and dirty. Oodles of crap in here and it's all priced to NOT sell. Hillcrest's saving grace is the people who volunteer there! They're so kind and helpful. A nice gentleman asked me if I needed help finding any specific movies and the woman who checked me out was super sweet. Another positive note - the children's paperback books were 25¢ each! SUCH a refreshing deal compared to shopping at other thrifts in the KC area. I'm not super impressed with the prices but Hillcrest has an important mission and it's local. Even though i am disappointed more then not when i go in there i havent lost hope and keep trying to enjoy the thrift in here like i use too. Like Red Racks its getting very pricey and why? They get it for free and if its for such a good cause move the merchandise so you can get some different fun stuff in. I have a thing for thrift stores.... So when I happened upon this one, got very excited! Store is clean and very well organized. Some furniture selections were top notch with a NON thrift price. That was a shock. Big selection of wedding gowns for $20 each. Not much in the shoe section; that was a letdown. The home decor section was almost nonexistent. Usually "trinkets" in most thrift stores are busting at the seams. Was really impressed by the book selection. Books were organized by topic like a real book store. Even the fiction section was alphabetized by author. So depending on what you're searching for, this store might just have it and makes it easy to find rather than digging and hunting. Three stars for pricing and smaller inventory. Five stars for organization and no "thrift smell"! read more

I went to Hillcrest Thrift Store on a mission. I needed a statement shirt, blazer, & some accessories for a concert that night. I had no idea this place existed until the Yelp phone app let me know where all the thrift stores were at in Lee's Summit. I was impressed when I first walked in. The place is large & spacious unlike many thrift stores which are usually cramped. There is a nice women's clothing section immediately to the left when you enter that is organized with regular store displays & racks. A note - the items on the mannequins are not for sale. Strange. Hillcrest Thrift Store's strongest feature is its organization. Everything is in its place. I learned later that this store is ran by Hillcrest Ministries which makes sense with all the sharp-mouthed older ladies walking around. They run that place like a tight ship. The furniture section is clean. Most of the pieces were ordinary run of the mill furniture. Not any unique pieces. They have a "Retro" section that I got really excited about at first but it turned out to be mostly plastic ware. I saw a Garfield lunch box. That was cool. There is a book section that looked well organized. I didn't venture over there - that's usually my husband's go-to place. So I don't know if they have any DVDs (another one of my Hubby's hobbies). It looked clean & not messy. I noticed they have a cute toy section. Its carpeted & contained with white picket fencing. All the toys are within kid's reach and the section is next to women's clothing so you could potentially let your kids play with toys while you shop nearby. Women's clothing was organized by size, of course. Each size had its own rack which I think is a step above normal thrift stores. So, why a 3 star rating? Why is this place just "A-OK"? Honestly I was completely underwhelmed by the lack of clothing. There were literally only two circular racks per size in the Women's section & maybe 20 blazers. This narrows down variety drastically since I didn't have much to choose from. I felt most of the pieces were hand picked by the Ministry that runs the place. Most of the items were not on trend for women under the age of 60. The same goes for shoes, purses/bags, housewares, & men's clothing. I'm sure as a thrift store they get tons of donations. I don't understand why they didn't have more clothing out on the floor. They didn't have much of anything. I was quite disappointed. Its like they drastically limit the items on the floor to keep it organized but in doing that they are also limiting the selection of items to choose from. My expectation of a thrift store is rows & rows of clothing so I can sort through to find that perfect gem. I like the hunt. Hillcrest Thrift Store is still worth a look. I ended up finding a soft vintage radio station ringer tee & a sheer scarf. read more

Although we didn't find a bookcase that we were looking for they have great furniture, clothes, books, even computers for a great price. This place is HUGE showroom. Goodwill is good and so is Red Racks but this hands down has the most variety and amazing prices! Tons of furniture to look at if you've just moved in the area, Goodwill also is great for that. I've shopped at the Hillcrest Thrift Store a few times prior to the poor customer service that I experienced yesterday, Saturday 12/15/18. After watching the cashier give the woman in front of me 75% off for a pair of Coach shoes when the discount only applied to Christmas related items I asked for a Veteran discount of which I had received previously. Last night I bought a new table lamp for my bedside to replace the one I've had for nearly 25 years that died. I was truly delighted to walk out with a new lamp and shade and a new tote bag. It is true you can find some nice items in this store; however almost every time I am in there, they overcharge me. I usually add up how I am spending and I always have to ask them to redo because 9 times out of ten they charge too much. If an item has two different stickers they will charge you both of those. My first time here, thought it was a nice clean store, good prices. Descent selection of furniture and lamps. Not a lot of home goods or decor, not much vintage on the day I was there. There is was an abundance of books and lots of space to got around. Plenty of parking too. They had a great selection of nice shoes, picked up a pair of vintage Converse All Stars. The store is clean and the staff and volunteers are friendly. There's a good selection of thrift store items. The reason for my 3 star review rather than 5 is the recent hike in prices. I used to shop in the store very frequently finding great items at great prices. Several months ago, it seems the pricing strategy changed, and Ebay prices are being used. If anything is remotely old or vintage, the price is high. People typically go to a thrift store to find a bargain. If I want to pay Ebay prices for something, I'll probably just buy it from Ebay. read more

My husband and I regularly shop here and many more thrift stores around the metro. We just happen to frequent this one because it's close and usually has good stuff. Some other reasons; the store is clean with low odor, the restrooms are always clean, and most items are organized very well with room to move about. The only problem I have with this particular thrift store is the climbing prices. They need to calm down a little bit and remember that each one of those items has either been in some stranger's mouth or on someone else's butt - so price accordingly please! read more

I have been coming to and donating to this thrift store for years. Always had a great selection, best prices in town, and amazing staff. It used to be my favorite in the area by far. I discovered more about their cause when my daughter's Girl Scout troop volunteered here. 100% volunteers and 100% profit goes to helping homeless families in our communities unlike other thrift stores in town in which a majority of their profits go to CEO and prices are ridiculous for used items (Red Racks). I have donated many car fulls to Hillcrest because I believed so much in what they did for our community. Management has changed over the past few years and it has had a drastic decline since. The staff and management are extremely rude! My mom had noticed once that the store receipt stated $30 (correct) but her credit card receipt they charged $60! When she went back into the store they accused her of....taking a different receipt and stapling them together or basically stealing!! The manager, another lady that seems to be in charge, and about 3 other employees are now there almost every day. They are all equally rude!! I can't imagine they volunteer that much time without some sort of compensation which makes me wonder if the proceeds are 100% going to the cause anymore which is truly sad and despicable!! In the past, anytime you donated you would get a $5 coupon for the store. Now, you get a coupon for $5 off $20. Wednesdays would always be senior days with 50% off for ages 55+. The place was always packed with seniors with very full carts. I went in yesterday and saw that senior day is now only 25% off and the place was almost dead. Those that were in there had very few items in their carts! The prices have gone up quite a bit since the management change as well. Looks like greed is their number one mission now... read more

I've supported this charity for over 10 years with countless donations. Each time I donate, they've given me a coupon to use in the store but due to personal issues (moving, cancer, etc) I've not used the coupons until recently. One cashier is particularly unfriendly and puts restrictions on coupon use that differ from posted signs and from other cashiers. I inquired with manager who accused me of stealing the coupons, stating that stealing them "wastes the time of his volunteers". I'm more offended than words can say; this is how you thank your contributors. Shame. read more

I bought 2 china cups, a silk blouse and a skirt from this store....when I checked my receipt I discovered that I had been over charged $2.00 for 3 women's items, when I had bought only 2 women's items for 3.00 and 6.00.....but I was charged 3.00, 4.00 and 4.00......and he did not give me my 25% discount according to the card that I had drawn.
