To relax I enjoy trying out new thrift stores and meandering down the aisles to see what they have to offer. I stopped in to TurnStyles today, I haven't been here in a year. It has your basics of most thrift stores with tending to have more mature style clothing. They have a section in the back that appears to be items that were overstocked and new with good prices on those items. I tend to go for books and they unfortunately have a poor selection of books. They have nice staff and it's is generally neat and orderly.

So I came back to this place on Monday because Sunday it was closed, and I'm glad I did. The prices are very inexpensive and it's pretty organized. Looking from the outside I thought it would be much bigger but there were some good finds. It wasn't too crowded and I checked out pretty quickly. The reason I gave them 4 stars is because there are only 3 dressing rooms and it seems to always be full. And they were a bit dirty. I had a lot of crumpled tissue balls on the floor and clothes still in there from another person trying on things and leaving them, but there was enough space for me to try on things and be comfortable at the same time. They have a good selection of clothing, furniture, household goods, shoes, books, and more. I would definitely Recommend this place first. I went to another place called Savers which was much bigger but it was more expensive. I would definitely come back here whenever I'm in town.

Is $4-a-gallon gas behind Overland Park's thrift store boom? I've heard news reports that charities around the country are selling their inventory as quickly as it comes in; but is that because donations have slowed down, or because more people are shopping at thrift stores out of necessity? I decided to find out by checking out a couple of recent additions to the 87th & Farley area. Turnstyles was the first store I visited. It's run by Catholic Charities and operates with the mission of helping those who might otherwise fall through the cracks. Turnstyles is probably three times larger than its neighboring thrift store, so there's a larger variety of items for sale. You can find clothing, furniture, housewares, electronics, toys - even antiques. To me the odds and ends were the coolest stuff, with everything from empty eight-packs pop bottles to baby bathtubs and Neil Diamond cassettes. Talk about doing the Time Warp! If you suddenly find yourself without the necessities of life, you can find most of them - reasonably clean and in good shape - at Turnstyles. On the other hand, if you have a spare bed or light fixture, donate them to Turnstyles. Plenty of people could use them.

Stopped donating here when I saw "volunteers" taking my stuff to their cars without putting it out for sale.

You can get lucky and find some really great furniture too. I love that they have started giving donors a $5 off coupon when bringing in donations. I also love that they will come to your house to pick up any furniture that you want to donate but can't bring in yourself. They also have sales daily and post a calendar so you know what is on sale when. Clothes sales days can get very hectic! That being said I don't like donating too much here, as I feel they price items awfully high for people on limited incomes. It seems like they cater more to people with money who are just looking for a good deal. I prefer to take clothes to places that give it away to low income people. I know they take the money they make and help a lot of people in the community, so that's great, but I just wish some of the prices in store were a little more affordable. I frequently see housewares priced higher or the same as new items at retail stores.

I found the parking lot to be depressing as if I was in the middle of no-where with civilization being hundreds of miles away. I'm just adding this point as it was the way I felt. That said, the staff friendly and most of the patrons were very nice. Please note Thrift stores are very hit or miss so going from week to week can result in a highly different experience. I'll be the first to admit, all thrift stores have a funky smell to them and I found Frugal's to be especially smelly; nothing to the point of unbearable but it lingers for the duration of the visit. Now in terms of being what do they offer, well pretty much everything and anything. Furniture, clothing, toys, books, CDs/DVDs, cookware, you name it. I found the kitchen section in terms of pots, pans, mixers and things of that nature to be very sparse while their main attraction was clothing. Off in the back right, one can find a small furniture section with some decent to horrible offerings. I liked some of the books they had and was extremely tempted to pick something up since I found many that perked my interest. Their music selection had me laughing as I noticed a couple odd bands from the 80s, 90s and beyond which I don't think anyone would buy. Color Me Bad anyone? I don't recall seeing much for motorized lawn equipment but I was in and out relatively quickly. Overall, thrift stores have a very particular clientele and subculture. I'm pretty sure if you're reading this you know how things go, so I'm not going to try and upsell you, rather give you the thumbs up to come on by and see what they got. It's safe and the people are nice while have a very large floorspace open to many different reasonably priced objects.

Everything was the same , prices, nice employees . Prices that are supposed to be $1 to$2dollars a pound, the main awesome thing that everyone loved and could actually afford was when an item like forsay a blender that weighed 5 lbs or more would be considered a 5 dollar item and it would be 5 dollars, period. Did not matter if the blender weighed 15 lbs, it was a 5 dollar item. Now all the sudden , depending on which worker you get, it can cost 15 dollars, maybe 13 or whatever they say that day. This completely ruins shopping at Goodwill Outlet. I know I'm speaking for numerous people. My days of coming are done. Especially when people have been coming for years because those who have a low income, were able to come and get many things for the whole family. What used to cost a cart say 30 dollars is now 80... Unbelievable. The workers will say different prices to every single customer, they will tell some hey let me know how much you got, and I can do this much, but wait till the one manager isn't up front. This is clearly wrong, dishonest to us and your company, they absolutely do not do rotations every 30-60 min. Your lucky to see 3 throughout the whole day. I really think the corporate headquarters needs to investigate every worker, manager at this location and you will see that your workers are dishonest, untrustworthy, and making people who been coming here for so long, just say I'm not coming back, and in disbelief on how they were charged as there walking out the door. Everything I have just written is the honest truth. Please give your customers some kind of hope in change to this store. Kind Regards 04/28/2028

I followed up this conversation by sending a picture of the doors to the coordinator, who said they were interested in the doors. I was going to arrange for their free pickup, but it turns out this is quite inconvenient. They schedule based on your zip code, which dictates the day of pickup. Then, the pickup window is the entire day. So you have to be home and waiting for the pickup on a random weekday, the entire day. If you work, you just can't make this work. The lady told me that instead, you can drop off the doors at the donation center. Today, I borrowed a trailer, loaded up the doors, and took them to the store. At the store, the man told me at that he could not take my doors, without even looking at them. They don't want doors, they can't sell doors, and they definitely can't take as many doors as I brought with me. Not to mention, the man was standoffish and acted like my bringing in a donation was an inconvenience or something. This would be fine with me if I had not already been told they wanted them and to bring them in. So yeah, pretty hard to make a donation to this place. It was a waste of time this afternoon, and it's a shame these matching doors in decent condition now have to go to the dump.
