Recently went back to NY to visit my mom and family. First morning back, friend from high school and I went to Hill Top Diner. Ok so growing up in this area, we went to the place it was back in the day, Akropolis (I think is how the spelled it back then) Back in the day it was pricey. Fast forward to present day and it's STILL pricey...and pricey for a diner. It is NY after all, but I mean, plenty of diners around that are cheaper. Does that mean I had a bad experience? Nah. Was just shocked at the prices. My plain waffle with butter was like $9. That's just insane to me. Waitress was super nice. She didn't check on us for refills and whatnot tho. So that was unfortunate. Still a nice person. Suuuuper quick in wanting us to order tho and by the time we got there the breakfast rush was definitely over. So It's ok to slow down some, sis lol. It's a good place to check out. Will I rush back there? Nah, probably not. We went bc my friend had to go to Canandaigua for her boyfriend and my mom lives not far from Canandaigua. So my friend picked me up...hence why we chose this place. Definitely worth checking out. People like this place from the reviews I've seen. Again, it's not a bad place at all. Food was definitely good. Just pricier than I expected is all...and again...for a diner. Best experience! Took my daughter to her first concert and found this little gem of a Restaurant on the way home. We live 3 hours away. My daughter accidentally left her (handmade by me) jacket there and was crying on the way home, we were too far away to turn around. My husband called the restaurant and an angel named Julia (who was probably swamped working at the time) said she would mail the jacket to us. 2 days later it arrived. It was such an act of kindness that is so rare these days. It is a reflection of the kind of people you will encounter at this wonderful restaurant. Absolutely not impressed! I called to order a to-go order, and the lady put me on hold. No big deal. I was on hold for almost 10 minutes before I hung up and called back. Another waitress told me the previous waitress forgot she put me on hold and walked away. I ordered French toast with fresh fruit on it, and instead I got plain French toast. No fruit, no powdered sugar, no butter, and no syrup. I also ordered corn beef hash and didn't get that either. When my boyfriend showed up to pick up our order he said there was a line out the door of people waiting to be seated, and not a waitress in sight. We love the sky burger - It's a double decker cooked to order. No bun is a great Koto meal - replace fries with cottage cheese.

We've been going there since they opened and have always found the food to be be very good and most of the wait staff pleasant and competent. However, not a fan of the reno. We stopped for dinner right after and it was extremely noisy, plus the long tables in the center were a bit much for 2 people - all the booths were full - 2 people that came in after us wanted to sit at the other end of our table. We also went for breakfast one day and the whole place was full with a party of some sort - no sign up. Another time we stopped for lunch and there was a sign that it was closed until dinner for a private party. We drive from Naples. Probably won't be going back. read more

We were with a tour bus and stopped here for dinner. Frankly, I didn't have high expectations, but I was pleasantly surprised. There was a large back room that seated us all, and the service was very good. The staff worked efficiently and served us all drinks, and the kitchen turned out 53 orders pretty quickly. Salads were pretty good. My fried Haddock fish dinner was delicious, with a nice coating of panko, I believe. The French fries were particularly good. Even though it was deep fried, it wasn't greasy at all. My wife had the chicken and rice dinner, and it came with three generous pieces of chicken. For dessert, we both had strawberry shortcake with strawberry ice cream. A nice dessert that wasn't heavy, and complimented our dinners perfectly. The food and service were good, but if you are looking for fine dining atmosphere, you won't find it here. It's nothing fancy, but as I say the food and service were good. Our favorite place all the time. Whenever we are in Canandaigua, it's our go-to place. How disappointing to be turned away at the door at 735pm when you close at 8 pm. We were told they stopped taking orders a while ago. Maybe we have to rethink our loyalty. Even worse, while we are Applebee's, the table next to us states they got the same message, and they were eating appetizers already when we arrived. Then we leave and drive by the restaurant at 842pm, and there are customers inside lights blazing. So, more than an hour after we were turned away, others were still in there. Great diner! We were on our way to Watkins Glen and needed a lunch spot. Hopped on Yelp and found this new hot business and great reviews. Walked in around 1230 and it was busy but managed to grab 2 seats at the counter. We had Hannah as our server and she was very friendly and seemed to love her job! I went with a cheeseburger and fries and man did I make the right decision! The burger was cooked to perfection and was delicious!! I stopped here with two friends while passing through town on a Tuesday afternoon. My friend H. recommended it because she liked the fried fish, and also most other eateries in the area are only open weekends. Let me give them a word of praise for having good wheelchair access. That's unfortunately the best thing I can say about the restaurant. When we walked in the door I was greeted by a reek of cleansers. The smell was practically unnoticeable in the dining area but there was an occasional faint unpleasant hint. The decor was light and airy, yellow walls and lots of big windows, but very bland and faintly shabby. I am a vegetarian and found very few possibilities on the menu. All the sandwiches, all the specials, even all the salads except the Greek contained meat. My only other option was macaroni and cheese, which I ordered with a side salad. The salad was fresh but served with glutinous cheap dressing. The macaroni and cheese was sticky, the cheese sauce textureless and bland. My friend P. was equally dissatisfied with her Reuben sandwich which she said was too greasy and rated 5 out of 10. However, H. enjoyed her fried fish and onion rings. I tried an onion ring and it was indeed good: a thick slice of onion in crisp batter, and not over-salted. I have no complaints about the service from the prompt and pleasant server. However, when they brought us the check they failed to mention that we should go up to the counter to pay, so we waited a long time before figuring out why they didn't return. I'm disappointed in the fish fry we had recently. From my favorite, crispy, flaky haddock fish fry we enjoyed at Hilltop in the past, I've had two bad experiences. The last one was so poor I won't hurry back. The beer batter was soft and I don't think the fish was haddock. It wasn't as white, flaky or tender as haddock. The server was delightful. We went on a Monday and I had one of the daily specials, bourbon glazed steak tips with mushrooms and mashed potatoes. The serving was enough for two meals and was DELICIOUS. Had the garbage plate and asked for the hot sauce on the side. It came with hot sauce on Hamburg and chicken. Hot sauce was awful. Scraped off and continued to mac salad. Terrible and off color. Tried home fried potatoes and were soft and tasteless. Hamburg and chicken the same. I tried to force as much in as possible but still half the plate was left. I was a contractor for 30 years and have eaten at least two meals a day at diners, and have never left food. Buy far the worst I have ever had. I thought maybe the waitress forgot to write down hot sauce on side but when the bill came it was write on the check. We had a table of ten for a birthday lunch, two of the ten were happy with the food. All similar complaints. The cook just isn't trying. read more

My fiancé and I came here and all I can say is what a let down!! We get seated and the people after us ordered AND received their food before we did!!! I'm visiting Canandaigua with my family and we wanted to make sure to eat at a diner. We saw Hill Top Diner got good reviews so we thought we should give it a try. To say the least, we were disappointed. I ordered scrambled eggs on the side and it was riddled with egg shells. With each bite I took I got a crunch of egg shell which made me lose my appetite. One of our menus had numerous eye lashes on it which was distasteful to say the least. Our server was efficient in providing us our food and water and checking to make sure we had everything, unfortunately it just wasn't the best experience overall. The best thing about our breakfast was probably the pancakes as it's hard to mess something like that up. However, they came with syrup packets and not even a full container of syrup. My French toast came without any butter yet the pancakes did which appeared to just be a lack of consistency. With all that being said, I don't think we'll be coming back. read more

I have been to the Hilltop Restaurant two times and both times, unfortunately, were disappointing. On the last visit, I went with the Greek Eggs Benedict. The hollandaise sauce was not whipped enough, it was separated and very thin, no flavor. The poached eggs were overcooked. We both ordered a side of avocado and had to send it back to the kitchen, it tasted rotten and slimy.. inedible. The homefries were underwhelming, just thrown in a deep fryer, no salt, pepper, or seasoning. The orange juice had a metallic taste, my boyfriend always gets OJ for breakfast and he just couldn't drink it. He ordered the egg sandwich with bacon and there was just one piece crumpled in the middle of the sandwich. I have worked in restaurants for many years and I know that the details matter, even for the basic things. I also know that it is harder to find staff nowadays so maybe that is part of it. I just wish there were more options and higher standards for restaurants around the area. I thought I would give it another chance today, but I have to say, I will not be coming back to this restaurant. Besides the disappointing meals, the seats were ripped, décor is kind of drab, and I think serving utensils in a brown bag is a bit tacky. The service could have been friendlier and more attentive. We didn't actually know who was supposed to be our server.. she only returned to give us our check and did not mention we have to pay up front, so we were waiting and waiting.
