Gateway grille is amazing in its location on downtown canandaigua. The service was quick as we visited for brunch on Sunday. The food was amazing as my wife and daughter all quickly ate their meals. The price was very reasonable for the quality and location. The portions were good and they served the jam in small hand packed containers.. Popped in on a Monday just before 11:15 hit and was told by the hostess that they weren't taking anymore customers because they've been so busy and the kitchen needs to catch up. So my party of two didn't get to eat here. But strange to turn people away when online, it states the business closes at 2pm. EDIT: If you post a sign on the door with specific hours but don't update your hours on Google, it can create confusion for customers. Additionally, there seems to be a discrepancy between the chalkboard outside, which lists a closing time of 2 PM, and the sign allegedly on the door which stated 11:30 AM close. We didn't even see the 11:30 sign. The hostess also mentioned a noon closing time. It might be helpful to ensure that all sources of information are aligned to avoid misunderstandings. For those seeking consistency, another option nearby, such as Simply Crepes, might be a better choice. If the owner is responding to Yelp reviews, I'm sure he's tech savvy enough to update hours on Google. Came here for a quick catch-up breakfast and wasn't disappointed. It took a while to get menus, but once we did service was on point. Our server was super friendly and funny with a healthy side of sass. He made sure our coffee and our bellies were full. I got the omelet which you can put in as many toppings as you want. It was well made! The home fries were a little burnt but still pretty good. The interior was pretty busy for 7:30am but I liked it. It was homey and cute and very relaxing. I appreciate that they didn't kick us out (there wasn't a line of people waiting or anything) and everything was super comfortable and cozy. I had to use the facilities before ordering and wow the women's bathroom was dimly lit and dirty!! Yuck! Had I not been with a friend that had ordered I would have walked out right then. My wife and I had a rare Saturday to ourselves so we headed to Canandaigua specifically to try The Gateway Grill... We had been meaning to try it for some time. The restaurant is located in the middle of the business district in Canandaigua. There are a few cafe tables out front and a roomy and immaculate dining area inside The staff was efficient and very pleasant. Service was a little slow but I honestly believe that was by design. We were happy to drink our coffee and relax without being rushed. Gateway has a fairly standard breakfast and lunch menu but also some creative daily specials to mix things up a bit. The lemon poppyseed French toast was unique and delicious. All in all a delightful experience. With a little drive to Canandaigua for breakfast and maybe a stole on the pier. read more

Dropped in for brunch and the food overall was really great. The breakfast plate was fantastic and the sausages and gravy were super tasty. Pricing was good overall and they've got a nice location with street parking available. Service was pretty bad overall with wait times keeping us in the place almost two hours. We were in town for the weekend for a concert. We ate at a number of different local restaurants and I have nothing but good things to say about all of them. We stopped here before we left for home for breakfast. It was busy, but there's busy and then there's busy and this was not that busy. We were seated fairly quickly, but it did take a bit of time for someone to come over and actually noticed that we were standing there. There were three maybe four servers as well as two older, I assume family members who were pouring coffee and bringing water, and then someone else. So again they were busy but they were not that busy. They certainly were not understaffed. We were seated quickly once we were noticed and we ordered, but after our order was brought that was pretty much the last time we saw anyone until our waitress brought the bill. No one asked us if we wanted anything else. No one asked us how the food was. We had to flag down someone in order to get a 2nd cup of coffee. Servers seemed very rushed and stressed. My breakfast was pretty good. Unfortunately my wife's was not. She had ordered the hashed eggs Benedict. The eggs were very overcooked, and there was about a tea spoon full of hash. We went up to the counter to pay our bill because our waitress and vanished again and we did let them know that she was not happy with the meal. One of the waitresses response was well mistakes get made. Well I'm not here to pay for your mistakes. They did take the cost of the meal off the bill so extra star for that. read more

A bunch of us had brunch recently. It's a nice place, the service was good, but I was very disappointed in what I ordered. " pico de gallo Benedict" a variation of eggs Benedict. If it had been cooked properly, it might've been delicious but there were several problems number one the English muffin was not properly toasted. It was more like warm. The next layer was the pico de gallo, which must've come right out of the fridge and I'm guessing the egg was also cold so the center wasn't even warm. As a result of these three factors, it wasn't even room temperature when it was served. I ate part of it and should've sent it back, but I didn't want to create a fuss. The service and food were both rather disappointing. When we first walked in it was a little busy but still a fair number of open tables and staff walked by us several times without acknowledging our existence at all. Once we finally were sat, it became apparent that the lady who was hostess was also running drinks and clearing tables. Seemed like poor allocation of staff responsibilities for a Sunday brunch. Then we noticed that other groups of people coming through the rear entrance were also completely ignored while people coming through the front entrance much later than them were sat near immediately. The food itself seemed exciting on the menu, but when it arrived on the table it lacked flavor and was all around unexciting. Then you were pretty much ignored by waitstaff for the duration of the meal, as our coffee was not refilled once the whole time we were there. My eggs Benny showed up with completely solid yolks. Rather than make them refire a new order, I asked if I could just have a runny egg to throw on top. 20min later still no egg or check on us and my husband is finished with his breakfast. Mine is now ice cold. A different server sees me sitting there. Apologized and cleared my barely half eaten plate. When our server runs our check with zero dollars off, she says "oh it's too late? sorry, he did make the egg". What's the point of making the egg if it never arrives to the table. I have worked in many restaurants, and the fact that the mistake wasn't rectified in a remotely timely manner or taken care of after ensures I'll never be back. read more

In the spirit of the holiday season, I'm giving Gateway a very generous 3 stars but will not be planning to return anytime soon. It would seem if you find yourself craving weekend breakfast and are near main street in canandaigua Gateway is one of your 3 options. Not in the mood for crepes, the better half and I decided to check this place out. It's easy to find and seating was plentiful; I actually liked how there was a "please seat yourself" sign in front, which avoids the awkwardness of waiting for a hostess to show up. The service was great if not outstanding; coffee was attentively replenished and things seemed to run quite smoothly here. But the food was very lacking. If your going to serve diner food, it needs to be good. This is stuff even the cooking impaired like me can make reasonably well in our own kitchens. My Gateway french toast (which was coated in oats) sounded like it would be good, but was served at a rather cool temperature and on cheap bread with little if any cinnamon flavor. Served with what I believe was margarine (gasp) and a patty of the chewiest toughest overcooked sausage, I left very disappointed. My better half got the belgian waffle topped with a blueberry compote which was pretty sad looking as you can see in the photo attached. The coffee was ok as was the water; probably the most enjoyable components of our meals. Was definitely in the mood for a crepe after leaving this place. read more

Went there for Breakfast. Prices and portions are very amicable. Waitstaff is friendly and fast. They have grits! And their pretty darn good for up here!. Will be back again! Will say their home fries are a bit on the sweet side ( might be the type of potatoe they use for it) I know some people are not a fan of that so just a PSA. read more
