We returned for dinner with our friends. We love this location due to the proximity to the west and east sides. We also really enjoy the food so the fact that they accommodate large groups really well makes it a well rounded choice for us. I ended up getting the Chicken Spanakopita and, as always, the Panko Encrusted Feta. I always fill up on their hot breadsticks (they are SO good!) that I end up packing up most of my entree for later. I did have some of the entree - the chicken is stuffed with spinach and feta. It was a great taste combination. The entree also comes with a side salad. In retrospect, I should have gotten that to go so I could enjoy it later. I'll do that next time. The feta appetizer was a chef's kiss - it is fried with panko breadcrumbs and served with honey drizzled all over. We had an incredible server who actually boxed up all our entrees for us so we could focus on our conversation and not clutter up the table. She was excellent! read more

After an nice hike at Highland Rec. Area we had an opportunity to make our first visit to the Highland House and were very pleased! We arrived around 2:30 on a Sunday and only had to wait a few minutes for a patio table. It was a perfect day to be in the patio but the fact that they have garage door type of windows also makes it even more open and gives you the feeling of being outside. The Highland House is part of a restaurant group so if you've been to one, you kind of know what to expect. They have fantastic bread sticks and if you don't try them with the garlic cream cheese spread you are certainly missing out! The food is always delicious and the portions typically allow you to bring a little home to enjoy later. our server in this day was very friendly and took decent care of us. I would have given this 5 stars, but... my biggest complaint is that there was a lot of waitstaff chatter - so much so that sometimes when they walked in groups of 3 or more by our table we had to stop our conversation because they were so loud. I don't know if something was going on or what but it was noticeable that they were the loudest people in the restaurant. Food was fantastic. The breadsticks with garlic cheese spread and then dunked into the roasted cauliflower soup - superb bite! The chicken spanakopita was very flavourful. As soon as you walk in the vibe is very cozy and it has a very comforting smell. Our server was very sweet and was answering any question we had. The breadsticks are fluffy and we got cream cheese dip for them. It was hard not to fill up on that. The people I went with got ribs and Alfredo which they both loved. I got the spicy chicken sandwich, I thought the chicken on it was really good but the spiciness comes from just putting some Frank's on it so I wasn't a big fan. Best Liver and onions anywhere in Michigan. That's the only thing we come here for about 2 times a year. The ambiance is way too modern after they remodel but it's nice. Good food at a fair price. For our first meal here we ended up getting the Margarita pizza and Greek salad with gratis house bread sticks. The Margarita pizza was well baked with the thin crust nicely browned all over. The tomato sauce, Mozzarella cheese and Basil toppings complemented each other very nicely and made for a vary flavorful pizza. The one small gripe I had is that the pizza could have used a bit more Basil as this is such a key ingredient for this style of pizza. Relative to the salad and bread sticks they were both quite good where a small salad was enough for me and wife to share. For drinks we ended up getting a Long Island ice tea and an Old Fashion with Woodford Reserve bourbon. The drinks were definately a tad on the stronger side, which I personally like, where the Old Fashion could have used just a tad bit more sweetness (syrup from cherry bottle always is good choice or simple syrup) to add a bit more balance to the drink. Having said that it was still a well made tasty drink. Relative to facility and staff, the restaurant has a large footprint with plenty of seating and a casual dining environment. The staff and in particular our waitress, was super friendly and very attentive to our needs where she personally added a lot to our dining experience. Definitely appears to be a strength of the business. Overall I was quite pleased with our first experience here where if you are looking for a good pizza that is a large step up from the many chain restaurants in the area than this is a place you should check out. read more

This place has been a long established restaurant. I remember as a young teen coming here with my family when they first opened up. They were the first in the area to have a salad bar which was so unique back then. The breadsticks were always outstanding and what most of the kids really wanted to come back for. The food was delicious, so the restaurant grew and grew and grew. Now it is massive compared to what it was, open air lots of room. Good place for groups together however, or waiter did the best that he could with a group of 17 so I'm not discounting him at all. He made sure all of us had drinks he made sure that everyone's checks went to the right people definitely you could tell that we weren't his first large group. Quality of the food. I was very disappointed actually this place used to have such a high standard and as I look around at all of the choices that were coming out and of course talking amongst ourselves, the quality just wasn't what it used to be. My ribs were grisly and overcooked, the fish was over battered, the lasagna which used to be outstanding here was a mess on the plate. My niece said it tasted good but I don't know if she was just being kind. I would hope to think that maybe it was because it was a large group and it was a busy day so I'm not going to not give this place a second chance. I will go back one day with a smaller group and see if I can get that old fashioned feeling of good cooking and ambience back. read more

How would you feel if you asked the waitress for a simple BLT and fries...and when the bill came found out they charged you $15! Turns out she just rang up their "gourmet" turkey sandwich with the turkey, guac, and other extras taken off, but still charged full price....wow! ...and it was awful! How do you screw-up a BLT??? (chewy bland bacon, slimy tomato, and soggy toast...plus I had to put the mayo on it from a bottle) Plus, their fries were beyond just "greasy"...they were dripping...and surprisingly flavorless....no spice or seasoning...just oily. We have gone here several times...trying different things each time looking for something good...have not found it...bland, mediocre food at a higher price than it is worth. Plus, the attitude there is really giving off this bad vibe....you are greeted at the hostess desk but 3 girls who look like they don't want to be there....and manager who is looking for an argument...and I don't know what is happening with the men in there...everyone seems to be stoned or has an attitude towards everyone. Previous to last night I would have said everyone should go to Highland House, but having went last night and not having drinkable water was awful. The server rudely told us he gets comments every night and didn't offer any explanation except "it's well water and I drink it." The water smelled like sulfur so badly I couldn't keep it at the table let alone have it near my nose to drink. I asked about it as we left and the hostess said she brings her own water from home and that they have a Britta in the back for water for servers. I can't conceive a restaurant not having drinkable water. The friends we were with said it likely indicates a problem with their well. The hostess also indicated to me it is getting worse. I'm not from Michigan, but locals said Highland house was the place to go. They were right. The restaurant was rebuilt within the last 5 years. It's open & airy. Large & comfortable. The breadsticks. EVERYONE said they were the best. They are very good, and a basket comes with your meal (or you can buy a basket for $7). The side salads. Huge! A side salad could easily serve 2 or 3. The entries. I had the chicken spanakopita- so delicious. My husband had the filet. Very good too, however he ordered it well done & should have opted for medium-well. The beers. We drove over from Pontiac when we had a few hours to kill and couldn't find very many options near the airport. We got there just after 5pm on a Saturday with hopes of beating the rush but we were shocked with how busy it was. The wait was already 45 minutes and there was a line out the door. We eventually got a table but our server wasn't great. He stopped by our table 3 times. To take our order, bring our food, and bring our bill. He was pretty awkward and all of our interactions were rather uncomfortable. I went with the fish and chips with fries and a Greek salad. The salad was massive and way more than I needed for a side. The fish was very good and cooked perfectly. The fries were crispy but just your average bar fries. Everyone here is obsessed with the breadsticks and they were pretty good. We ordered a basket of them to start but I felt the garlic dipping sauce was slightly overrated. Overall, cool atmosphere with a massive dining room and bar. We went with cousins and I have many memories of great meals there. I haven't eaten there since I was a child so I assumed that it was still great. We had take-out. This was supposed to be our Valentine's Day meal since we were both out of town on the 14th. We ordered two of the Kale Salad one with blackened salmon and the other with chicken. The salads were only okay. The kale was tough as nails and needn't have been. If it had been soaked it would have been tender. The salmon was very tasty. The Cauliflower Steak was served on uncooked - not kidding - lentils. I love lentils. Not these. It was a disaster. A few years ago, I came here for the first time and ordered a Caesar salad, which was basically just a few pieces of lettuce swimming in way too much dressing. Earlier this year my husband and I found ourselves hangry and in need of a quick meal with a cocktail and Highland House was one of our only options open at the time. We ordered some drinks and sat out on the patio to enjoy the warm Spring air. When you get a good sunny spot out there, it's so nice! My soup & salad lunch (Caesar + Minestrone) was delightful -- perfect portion size! I cleaned my plate! Another dish that hits the mark is the Cauliflower Steak. It's bright and savory, and satisfies the palate the same way a meat dish would. Great vegetarian choice if you're looking for something light and healthy. My favorite pick as of last week is the Super Food Salad. It's fresh, sweet, and full of flavor; something I will now crave forever! My husband usually gets a sandwich or pasta dish, and always raves about it. There is an extensive selection of interesting cocktails and the bartenders seem to get it right every time. Try the "Whale Hello There," it's perfectly light and similar to a classic margarita, but made with gin. Even if you hit this place up just for the breadsticks, don't forget to add on the garlic cream cheese dip.. it will change your life! Make it a point to stop by if you're in the area. Just landed in Michigan for my niece's baby shower and was hungry for dinner so my brother in law took us to Highland House. We were greeted with a smile from the hostess and seated. Our server, Nikki, was an absolute sweetheart. She was bubbly and friendly and brought us a basket of breadsticks as she greeted us. OMG!! These are the bomb!! A little bit of crunch on the outside soft inside and just the right amount of salt. I ordered the chicken wings which are baked by the way and a small Greek salad. The chicken wings were absolutely delicious and came out piping hot. I loved that the flats were attached to the little drumsticks. They have a tasty dry rub and are very meaty. Met an old friend yesterday and had a lovely lunch and great food. We are separated by distance so our lunches run long. Our waitress Brooke was lovely and took great care of us. When she left for shift change, she told us a new waitress, Kelly, would be checking in on us. We were aware of the restaurant getting busy and did not intend to take a table for too long. Kelly came to our table about 1/2 hour into her shift and literally swept everything off the table and made it pretty obvious she did not want us taking her table. We asked for water and little did she know we were going to order a cocktail. After sweeping the table of everything on it, she never returned with water or to take our drink order. Love it here, best date spot in Highland! the prices are amazing, and food quality is great. They don't take reservations so be willing to wait a bit. We get the shrimp and scallop provencal. Comes with a huge basket of bread and almost full size salad. We split the pasta and still take leftovers, and we never split entrees at other restaurants! Here's my issue with this place. Went for the first time in V-Day. Husband called and they said they don't take reservations but would get us in. We went early so there would be a horrible wait. We came in and we had about a 15 minute wait. As we were waiting, a number of "regulars" as the manager referred to them, came in, and were seated before us. What a crock. I get the need to want to serve those who are loyal to your business, but to seat those groups before everyone else is poor business practice. And to say out loud they are regulars so everyone knows they are getting that treatment is even worse. I want to be clear that it was who I believe were managers doing this, not the owner. The owner walked around chatting with people and thanking them for coming in. I even overheard how one of the managers was talking to a staff and it was so inappropriate. She should have taken him to a private area to say what she had said. No matter how good food is, that type of behavior is discouraging. I will share what I thought about food. Large meals! If you think the menu is expensive, don't. You are getting a lot of food for that price. I had the Italian Chopped Salad. Wasn't a fan of the house dressing, but the salad was good. Husband had fish and chips and loved it. Our server was quirky, but gave great service. Happy with food and server. read more

Arrived at highland house about 5pm on a Saturday and it was crazy busy. We waited 40 mins to be seated (3 people) and there were loads of people waiting both inside and outside. We were seated out on a small patio and it was pleasant. The servers seemed overwhelmed so the service was a bit slow. The breadsticks were devoured once the basket finally came. They were great- salty, fluffy, buttery and almost reminded me of a pretzel. I got the chicken spanakopita and it came with broccolini and rice. The broccolini was a little tough/undercooked but the chicken and rice were perfect. I loved the lemon sauce (it was subtle) and how cheesy the chicken was. My friend ordered the ny strip medium rare and it came back a little overdone but the waitress did her best to make it right. Many of my friends rave about this place so I think that the staff may have just been overwhelmed and it might be better on a slower night. read more

Great service too, we will have to try the ultimate Chocolate Cake (recommendation-Yes! ) but this time we are too full. Loved the burger- really juicy and tasty, cooked as requested AND the fresh Turkey sandwich on marbled rye - the spaghetti side was a relief from French fries. We enjoyed the big space with the floor to ceiling windows (they open in the summer) which offered enough light even on a dreary rainy afternoon. This place is very clean and updated. I ended up at Highland House after wandering around aimlessly, not having a clue about what I wanted. I eventually decided that I wanted a salad, saw the ones they had to offer and decided to try it. First, the restaurant was much nicer than I'd expected; I'd driven past it a few times, and I thought it would be more of a family-oriented, kind of hole-in-the-wall kind of place. But actually, it looked much more upscale than that, and as I was waiting on a Saturday afternoon wearing jeans and tennis shoes, I suddenly felt underdressed as I watched more dressed up parties walking out. Still, I decided to go in, and I'm really glad I did. I had a tough time choosing between the Apple Orchard and the Super Food salads, but in the end, decided that the Super Food might be a little rough on my stomach. So I got the Apple Orchard, but I substituted feta cheese for the bleu cheese. Oh my. It was SOOOO good. Loaded with vegetables, dried cranberries, Granny Smith apples, pecans, just enough onion for contrast and topped with grilled chicken, it was truly one of the best salads I've had.
