I've been here two or three times before and had good experiences. They only service earl gray, no options, so that's a bit of a disappointment when going to high tea as usually there is a full menu of choices. Food - this time the food was so so. The issue is everything seemed to be prepared too far in advance and was dry and crusty, so much of the bread of off-putting. Certain breads were worse than others but some of the bread was so hard and stale we didn't eat it. Same with the pastries. They had clearly been sitting in the fridge for a while and had a yellowish tint to the top that shouldn't have been there. They just looked off. Overall all items were not great because of that, ruined the meal. It doesn't feel good to pay that mic and remove bread, top of pastries, etc, just to avoid the hardened icky parts. read more

So at the end of January 3 of us went to High Tea with Gerri. There are a few options to choose from price wise and you need to reserve ahead of time. It is in an older house and is a small tea room with what I call rather British decor: Ruffles and flowers galore, very cute. Gerri serves the tea and is friendly but not overly intrusive in the conversation when she appears. You can see from the pictures we had the small sandwiches, sweets and scones. Served with clotted cream and lemon curd and jam for the s ones Everything was very good, but no one was thrilled with the scones. I was glad they weren't super dry, but seemed a bit too moist. After trying to make scones a lot myself, it's hard to find a consistency favored by all though. It was cold outside but inside was sunny and warm. I loved the variety of art on the walls and the variety of teacups. A good time was had by all at 11:30 even though high tea is officially 5-7 pm. Oh and also, if you want to wear a hat, there are fun ones to choose from. And lastly the tea was good and refilled in your cup regularly. Awful experience. The food was stale!! The scones were hard as rocks. I was told that is how scones are supposed to be, as if I hadn't been to every upscale hotel in chgo dozens of times for High Tea; Peninsula Hotel, Drake, Etc. My granddaughter only ate the cucumbers, which appeared fresh. She whispered in my ear that this was the worst tea! She is eight years old. There were little chocolate parfaits on the top tear that I brought home to my husband, who took one bite and said, Are you kidding me?!" We through everything in the garbage. The finale was I became sick about 20 minutes after arriving home. Also, the ambiance was terrible. We were squashed like sardines in a can! I'm sure it was above legal capacity. The macaroon was good, which was probably store bought. I would give this place zero stars if possible. read more

The ambiance was very nice and felt exactly like a tea room. The food was delicious and the tea was great. We were told what was on the menu and the tea blend, along with the sides. Very nice service. I also really appreciated our experience with them, as we had previously scheduled a tea time a couple weeks prior but due to unexpected illness the day of, we had to cancel only a couple hours before our scheduled time. While there is a cancellation fee and we were understanding on being charged it, they understood the unexpected illness and waived the charge for us. That empathy and understanding was great and immediately made me want to reschedule for another date. I was very happy with the service I received here and the whole experience was great! DON'T GO!! A friend brought me here for my birthday 2 weeks ago, on a Sunday, it was an incredibly thoughtful gesture! The space was sunny and pretty although a little dated. The tea was good, unlike my other tea house experiences there were no choices offered In tea blends. We upgraded to add a salad with protein. I believe the charge was $20 more. A tiny salad with Wednesday's greens came out with canned chicken on top. It was shocking. Everything went downhill from there. The scones were microwaved, the petit fours were from a box. i believe the mouse was instant pudding. It was an $14 meal for $160! Our server was a very nice lady, and I'm sure had no part of menu options. I want to spare anyone who is considering this establishment the pain of sitting through an experience here. read more

I've been to high tea where each person gets a yea of choice and their own teapot. At Gerri's - no choice- and you have to wait for someone to refill your cup. What a wonderful treat for my sister and me! The tea was a delicious Christmas-y blend and the food was very tasty. The service was gracious, prompt and welcoming and the cost was reasonable. The house was decorated for the season and was very pretty. Gerri could noy have been more kind and packed up the food for our guest that could not attend because of illness. I want to start off by saying I know food allergies are difficult for restaurants to accommodate and I completely understand if they are unable to do so. However, it's one thing to be unable to accomodate an allergy and another to say you can and then retract that statement after several confirmations. I inquired about whether the food allergies my child has could be accommodated prior to making a reservation and was told by Miranda that they could. For context the allergies are dairy, peanut, and egg with gluten intolerance. I proceeded to make a reservation, and a week after I made the reservation Miranda reached out again confirming whether the whole party or just 1 of us had dietary restrictions. I asked for whatever was easiest and was told by Miranda that it was no problem to prepare a different menu for just the 1 person. By all accounts Miranda was a pleasure. The issue is with Gerri the owner. Gerri reached out to me today via text, 2 days prior to my reservation, to tell me in what felt like a very condescending tone that there were too many restrictions and offered to just serve salad instead. I was floored. Not only does their website state that they can accommodate, but I received confirmation from Miranda twice that it would be no problem. After I sent her a screenshot from her website suddenly the only issue is the bread because apparently no dairy and egg free bread exists? After I replied that it does, Gerri once again gave me a condescending response and asked if I wanted to keep the reservation and she would get the quote "special bread". As if the reviews about the lack of hygiene at this place weren't bad enough now I have to trust that this ignorant woman won't give my child an allergy attack. Gerri, I can buy the "special bread" as you call it at aldi, it's not that special and not that hard to find. Also a quick google search would tell you that you were wrong and would have saved you some embarrassment. I find it hard to believe that someone who claims to serve dairy and gluten-free menus has never encountered someone who needs both. I guess the reviews about your attitude, and most of your food being prepackaged from Trader Joes are right. Update your website and learn what accommodation means. read more

I made a reservation for 4 of us for afternoon tea. It was a 40 minute drive but Long Grove is cute and we were looking forward to it. When I made the reservation, there was no request for payment. I asked about how we were to pay via email and was not given an answer. There was not a cancellation policy sent to me via email. I went back on the website and could not see any policy either. On our way there, one of our friends we were meeting there had an emergency and was not able to go. When we got there, the hostess told us that the 3 of us would need to pay for all 4 tea reservations, even though it was not our fault that the person cancelled. We could eat the extra ourself or take it home. I thought this was very unfair, but we had driven the 40 minutes, so we paid for 4 and one of us took it home. But to charge someone $60 for tea in a box without all the ambiance of having it with the fancy table and china is ridiculous. If this is going to be the policy, the money should be collected up front and the policy should be clearly stated on the website. This is not professional and was very upsetting to us, but we had the tea and tried to set that situation aside. The tea itself was well done. There was a nice array of cute tea foods. The sandwiches were outstanding and there was an ample amount. We each got 8 small sandwiches. The scones were average and the desserts were average, but the overall experience was nice aside from the cancellation issue. The tea served is an Earl Gray, and it was served table side by pouring the tea over the leaves through a filter. I would rather have a pot of tea that I could pour myself but we were able to get refills fairly quickly. I would also recommend dressing warm if it is cold because it was extremely cold when we were there (January). So as long as you get all your friends to pay in advance, and you dress warm, you may want to give this place a try. Due to the unfair payment policy, we were not able to enjoy the experience to the fullest. The hostess kept saying how much the other person would appreciate the tea, but our friend doesn't live near us and we were not going to burden her with a $60 charge while she was dealing with a stressful situation. I suppose we could have left and not paid for any of the tea service but that would not have been fair to the establishment. read more

On August 3 2024, A couple of mom's and I threw my daughter a bridal shower. We chose this location to deliver a Vintage experience for my daughter. It accomplished the goal. It was just wonderful. Food was crisp and fresh and the staff spoiled our group of 24 to death in cute little vintage dresses. We used 2 rooms and it worked very well. We also brought in Prosecco to add to the menu. This place is definitely on the pricey side but worth it for a splurge. I popped in one day to see what this place was and was blown away by the lovely collection of tea-ware and inviting interior. The woman was so kind in explaining the concept and gave me some menus to take with me. She was also dressed up in lovely tea-time attire. You do have to phone ahead to book a time--not that it's super busy but that it does take her a fair amount of time to prepare your tea-time treats in advance. I came back on a Sunday afternoon date and had a lovely time enjoying tea properly poured with all of the right accouterments and beautiful finger sandwiches, scones, and sweets alongside. read more

Had a wonderful high tea experience with my daughter, sistahs and niece. The ambience was just right and is what you would expect in historic Long Grove. The amount of food provided was just enough. I however would have loved a bit more of their wonderful squash soup. The timbleful amount was not enough to satisfy, especially since it was really delicious. The bit that was disappointing was that we were provided with only one choice of tea-Earl Grey. In the other high tea establishments I've been to a different type of tea was offered for each course. I wouldn't go back. First off, I expected to be able to at a minimum have a choice of tea from which to chose from. Instead you get one thing - a mix of Earl gray and English breakfast. Next, I barely ate anything. The "soup course" is served in a super small cup and is a tomato based soup with cream on top. The presentation was cute but I didn't want it - but I hear it was good. Next came a pretty big serving of salad - I had the trout which was super salty, so I didn't bother with that either. Then there was a selection of finger sandwiches provided. These were passable, but nothing special. And fishy, the desserts - nothing was good. They all tasted slightly stale to me. First all, the ambience. It was in a Victorian style which was sorta cute and certainly set the vibe - so that's where the 2 stars come in. Mind you - I thought it was cheesy when you looked closer and saw so.e of it was dolls and much of it was overkill. The bill was $41 each - despite​ one member of the group who was vegan and clearly told that hers would not be the 5 course. And despite me not having the first course of the soup. But ... Reserved a table for a weekday afternoon. The place is cute and I loved that hats were available The food was good but for a tea room having only one type of tea seemed odd. The pace was relaxed and we didn't feel rushed. The tea started out hot but with each topping up got colder and colder. For the price, I would expect more attention to details. The quantity of food served was on the skimpy side too. An additional scone or a few extra finger sandwiches would have been nice. For three of us our bill was $140. Pretty pricey for what was served. Did I enjoy the atmosphere and company? Yes ! Would I return? Most likely not. read more

I want to start by saying that Sonia, who works there, is a really sweet person who tried very hard to be accommodating. As kind as she was, though, this afternoon tea experience was a terrible waste of both time and money. My family loves afternoon tea, and we've done it all over the world. High tea is meant to be a splurge. Prices are high--that's to be expected. The value in afternoon tea comes from having a leisurely experience, tasting decadent pastries and sandwiches, sipping an exquisite tea of your choosing, in a beautiful environment. This is not that. This is pre-packaged foods, cheap tea, and a chintzy environment--at a horrifying $50 per person. 0/5 stars for the food - When you sit down, they immediately start you with a tiny little demitasse of warm tomato soup. As soon as we took the first sip, we were all like "OMG, this is Trader Joe's tomato and roasted red pepper soup!" I'd be willing to bet money it was, and they dressed it up with a splash of heavy cream and a little sprig of dill. After that, everything else is brought to the table in a single course. A scone for each person (not warm), and the tiered platter with sandwiches and desserts. Again, I got that Trader Joe's / Costco feeling. The tea sandwiches (particularly the salmon and the brie) were smaller than any other tea sandwiches I've ever had--like the size of a quarter--and very ordinary (an exception being the asparagus sandwich). The meat in the in the beef tenderloin rectangles tasted like the cheapest kind of pre-packaged deli meat you could buy. The scones weren't bad, but weren't great. The devonshire cream was terrible. The lemon curd was really the only thing that was quite good. The "pastries" were just...cheap...store-bought... I'd bet more money that the macarons (one per person) were straight out of the Trader Joe's freezer section. The tiny little petite four was nauseatingly sweet. And the super tiny mousse cups were kind of weird and watery. Again, I was like "this came out of a freezer box" and they dressed it up with some lavender and a blueberry. All of it was just...tiny and cheap. What I expect for afternoon tea is for the venue to bake their own lovely scones, and for a pastry chef to make some beautiful, unique desserts. I expect some of the tea sandwiches, like the cucumber, to be traditional, and others to feel quite new and special. The fact that it wasn't any of that made it extra disappointing. 0/5 star for the tea - When you go to afternoon tea, there is always a selection of special teas from which to choose. At this place, there's one kind--black tea--and it's not especially tasty. But the worst part was, they left the tea steeping the entire time we were there, so when our teacups were refilled after the first cup, the tea was bitter and undrinkable. Beyond that: 1. The parking situation was terrible (they have two or three spaces in their lot, and there is no street parking. I would imagine that Long Grove has city parking somewhere, but all of the neighboring parking lots are private parking only. If you're a senior, or with seniors, this situation is no bueno. 2. The tablecloth and one of the tea cups was dirty when we arrived. 3. There are a lot of bees there for some reason. Maybe the flowers that are planted all around? As soon as we sat down outside, the bees showed up and wouldn't leave. We were warned that there were also bees that had flown inside the restaurant, and sure enough, that was the case. 4. They did not serve water. 5. The chairs are uncomfortable. Again, $50 per person for the afternoon tea served here is absolutely outrageous. We honestly felt like we'd been robbed. read more

Gerri truly goes above and beyond --- she answered my email questions very quickly, accommodated a gluten allergy and even upgraded my niece's children's tea to the adult tea on the fly. On top of all that, she has a variety of hats for guests to borrow, creates her own special recipes for the tea goodies (everything was delicious) and even greets you in a beautiful gown! Beware if you're making a special trip here!!! Very disappointing. Made plans for a special girls day. And all live over an hour away. Emailed reservation request 4 days ahead of time and received a response that the reservation was received and accepted. Received an email from Gerri 24 hours prior to the reservation saying she could not take our reservation as she had a bridal shower scheduled. I guess I'm left wondering why I wasn't notified about this when I originally made the reservation. Good thing I saw the email...perhaps a phone call with an apology would've been a better practice. There are a variety of different hats to wear to be in the high tea experience. The lady helping us was super nice and informative of the history of the tea and the place. The food was very delicious!! A lot of food to go around for the whole party. Their house tea was so good to go along with the sandwiches, scones, and pastries. If I could give 6 stars out of 5 I would. I spent an unforgettable afternoon at High Tea with Gerri and it was wonderful. I felt like I was getting Ritz-Carlton service in a cozy, Irish tea house. For a few hours my friend and I were transported back to Ireland with delicious teas, little sandwiches, tea cakes, scones with incredible lemon curd and stawberry jam. The decorating is eclectic and exquisite yet makes the guests feel so relaxed and at home. There is a rack full of beautiful hats for the men and women to wear. I selected a pink chiffon wide brimmed hat...what fun. If you want to escape the winter doldrums for a few hours High Tea with Gerri is the answer. DO NOT WAISTE YOUR TIME or MONEY!!! I cannot tell you how disappointed I was to spend my daughter's bachelorette party at High Tea with Gerri. We love high teas and have tried many different venues and this was the worst experience we have ever had. I spent $240 (not including tip) for 4 adults and 1 child. The adults get a small salad (the only thing of any substance) the equivalent of 1 sandwich (finger sandwiches listed are not meant as pickup with fingers it means they are the size of fingers), 1oz of soup and huge very dry and tasteless scone and three small desert bites (literally bites) $48 per person. Oh and lets discuss the kids $25 spread - my granddaughter, who was so excited to be joining us for this very special event, got a small peanut butter and jelly sandwich (cut into small triangles), 1 bite size cookie and a 1oz jello. The chairs are terribly uncomfortable and the tables are so small you can hardly fit your tea with a dessert plate on them. I had read reviews and I thought this was going to be amazing, but all's I can say about any positive reviews is Gerri either paid someone to write them or Gerri wrote them herself.
