On the corner of Eastern and S. East Avenue, High Grounds Coffee establishes itself as a classically comfortable cafe. There's tons of seating, and even a little back room with some couches and a coffee table. The green walls with wooden accents around the space give a natural effect, and I think is conducive to focusing on work. I've got to echo other folks' reviews - the dirty chai is FANTASTIC. As was the hot coco, totally recommend. As for food, honestly not too shabby. The avocado toast had solid flavor with the red onions, but maybe not my favorite avocado spread. The breakfast sandwich was also good but I think the bagels toasted a tad too long. Between the drinks, the food and the vibes, I would say it's a solid place to grab breakfast and hang for a while!

This is my new spot! Their chai is my favorite in the city so far, it is creamy, flavorful, and I'd overall highly recommend. If you're in it for the caffeine, the dirty chai is also great, both hot and cold! It's also a good place to work-- they had a surprising amount of table/desk space and the wifi didn't require a password which I think makes the WFH experience much more seamless and friendly for customers. A great local spot that I now take my friends when they are in town!

Excellent dirty chai and PIPING hot breakfast sandwich (sausage egg and cheese) on a pretty good bagel! I liked the egg and it was well seasoned. Space is cozy and the staff were very nice. There is plenty of street parking but I was there around lunch time. I would definitely return here for the yummy dirty chai!

This is a cozy coffee spot with a wide variety of coffee flavors and syrup options, including sugar free syrups. And they have serve yourself cereal bar and drip coffee bars! It's kind of like the buffet at a Holiday Inn Express, only significantly better, and you don't have to stay at the Holiday Inn first.

i've always loved high grounds coffee because it's the closest coffee shop in the area that is actually open on Mondays lol. I really wish people would keep in mind that this is a local coffee shop and not a chain. Coffee shop location. The servers do their best to get your orders out in time. Please know that sometimes they might run a little slower than usually depending on the amount of servers working at that time. Regardless this location does their best to get you in and out as quickly as they can and they take their time preparing your food and coffee and drinks and it makes the experience well worth it. also, if you don't wanna work from home, you can actually work at this coffee shop. They have a ton of seating where you can sit and work all day long. I think my favorite part of this coffee shop is the cereal bowl section which I think is so unique. I've never seen that at a coffee shop

Ordered online here for lunch for the first time. I included a note asking for syrup for my latte as I can't take a break at work today and was really craving one. They were super sweet and made sure it was perfect! The ham sandwich and blueberry muffin were also very delicious. 10/10 recommend

CUTE lil neighborhood coffee bar. KUDOS on the decor, cereal bar, bagel/pastry display, and the many menu offerings. Totally LOVE the effort on the menu items. See pics. Friendly (but SLOW) service. I'm thinking an upgraded toaster oven is in order and would absolutely help their output. I ordered an everything bagel w/ salmon cc. NO complaints on the salmon cc ... TWO thumbs up on the real bits of smoked salmon. Also ordered a ham/Brie breakfast sandwich. Only the pic can prove my disappointment. It was plain ole wonder bread with a dollop of Brie and deli counter ham ... but NOT $7 worthy deli ham. Grateful for the addition of the strawberry preserves but overall, it was just MEHHHH for me. MINOR complaint. The cafe could use a good cleaning. For example, the cinnamon and nutmeg containers were super grungy but not a deal breaker b/c I didn't need cinnamon or nutmeg. The tables coulda used a wiping but, again, not a dealbreaker for us because we were not dining in. Overall, worth the drop by and tell them you saw it on Yelp!

I appreciate a small business, it's where I prefer to spend my dollars. This was walking distance and being new to the neighborhood we wanted to check it out. The spot allows for a traditional table experience in the front and some lounging in the back. While it's very community oriented the furniture doesn't seem well cared for. It's also kind of dark. The service was nice although I have reservations about the same person taking the payments and making the food. They were running out of bagels so we were limited in options but appreciated the vegan options, that's not always available. I ordered a large hot tea and I liked the loose leaf tea option but needed a spoon or a longer stirrer. Not sure if I would go back but the community seems to love it.

Pretty simple Coffee. I wish the caramel was more flavorful!

Was overall okay cup of coffee. $5.00 for this. I don't think it was the best use of my $5.

I found this small coffee shop because I signed up for a tour and this was the meeting spot! While waiting for the tour guide we ordered coffee and tea! Prices were reasonable l! The inside has tables and chairs to chill out..WIFI is available for patrons! Although it is probably an adequate..nothing special coffee house..some of their proceeds go to: Doctors Without Borders; Building 100 orphanages Internationally! Extra star given! Higher Grounds..give Liz our tour guide (Highlands Mural Arts Tour) at least 10% off for her orders because she is driving folks to your spot and informing them of your mission!

Great place for a latte and a chat. I went here with a friend and we enjoyed the cafe very much. We've been drinking our way through different coffee shops in the city and this was another successful stop. There is a nice variety of seating including comfy leather chairs, regular tables and even some bar stools.

Inside bacon egg and cheese sandwich on jalapeno cheddar bagel (after I cut it at home).

Off the bat, I will say the service was extremely friendly and warm and the prices are good value. The biggest turn off for me was that while I was there a regular waltzed in, got some of the self-service coffee on the counter, and paid with no mask, all while chatting with the staff like nothing was wrong. The staff member didn't acknowledge this customer wasn't wearing a mask and seemed to find no problem with it. The hubris of that customer went unchecked and I don't respect that. It made me uncomfortable. The breakfast sandwich I ordered (bacon, egg, and cheese on a cheddar jalapeno bagel) was large and tasty. There was a lot of melted cheddar and jalapeno slices on the bagel which made it pretty spicy (which I liked), though the bagel was a little flat. I do wish the person who made the sandwich had cut it in half before giving it to me-- it was fine since I was going home and could cut it there, but if I was going to the park or somewhere without a kitchen it would have been harder to eat. The latte was just ok. Overall, I'd rather spend my money somewhere that enforces the mask mandate and has the guts to tell a regular to follow the rules. There's not a lot of places to get a cheap breakfast sandwich in Highlandtown, but I'd rather walk a bit further to Patterson Perk and give them my business instead.

I got milk chocolate sweetness, mild acidity, some citrus/fruit notes, and a little spice as well. The flavor got more complex as I worked through the cup. Balanced shot overall with good texture and distinct tasting notes. 5 / 5. The pour over was also solid. Full bodied, fruity and floral notes. 4/5.

I realized I actually have been here before but it's been years since my last visit! The inside is your typical quaint, converted row-home with some limited seating. There was only one barista working this day but she was doing her best to take orders and make drinks in a timely fashion. By the time we arrived in the late afternoon, they seemed to be out of some specialty items like the blueberry cold foam (which I heard a few people ask for). I opted for an iced oat milk latte with caramel and really enjoyed it. The flavor was so good I actually questioned whether it was really oat milk, but it was just that good! Street parking can be hit or miss in this area but we got lucky. Super grateful to see their hours are a little more expanded compared to other coffee shops in the area that close early.

Short answer: absolutely worth it!Long answer: I'm already thinking about my next excuse to come back. Walking in, the space immediately delivers. The aesthetic is awesome-- the kind of intentional, beautifully designed interior that feels warm and curated rather than staged. It's trendy without being cold, and the Inner Harbor location makes it that much more special. I know there is a huge renovation planned "down the harbor" , this Matriarch is ALREADY READY! You get all the energy of the waterfront with a cozy, tucked-in feel once you're inside. Now, the coffee. I got a latte that was genuinely one of the better cups I've had in a long time -- smooth, rich, perfectly pulled. I also had a Chai and paired it with a cherry & cheese danish that was fresh and delicious, the ideal complement to the drink. I asked for it heated and it was hot all the way through. Hate it when I get it and it is cold in the middle...the barista understood the assignment and got us right! Everything felt thoughtful, like someone in that kitchen actually cares about what they're putting out -- because they do. Speaking of which -- I had the pleasure of meeting the owner, and it all made sense. Warm, passionate, and clearly proud of what they've built. Shirts, cups, napkins, and merch that says "I love my Matriarch" is a reminder of the "Why" behind this spot I think. That kind of energy flows through the entire space and staff. You feel it the moment you walk in. The Matriarch isn't just a coffee shop. It's a destination. If you're in Baltimore, this is a must. If you're outside the city -- make the drive. Trust me. See you soon, Matriarch!
