My work lets me work from home, so I tend to try out a lot of coffee shops in the area that have free wi-fi. High Grounds provides fast free wi-fi and their espresso and coffee is great. I have been here several times and will definitely be back on a regular basis. They provide microwaved breakfast sandwiches for those in a rush, handmade toasted sandwiches for those that want a better meal (ME), bagels, muffins, wraps, and pastries. All of these are for a reasonable price, though on the current menu they don't list the prices for the bagels, pastries, and handmade sandwiches. There is decent amount of seating and the owner is adding outlets to most of the tables. Seating was a great layout and the tables made it easy to get my work done. For a local coffee shop this one is striving to set the bar of excellence very high. The owner Michael is willing to make a difference for his customers and quickly addresses any issues that are brought to his attention. I received a brief tour of their coffee grinding operation which provides coffee to some of the larger grocery stores. They run 6 days a week grinding coffee from multiple countries. read more

I always take my coffee on the go. Normally, rushing out the door desperate for my caffeine fix so I am somewhat intelligible at work. I used to never care about how my drink tasted just as long as I got my morning jolt. The High Grounds costa rican coffee is so incredibly delicious that they converted me into a coffee snob. Yesterday, I had Starbucks and was so disappointed. Never again. Service is always incredibly friendly, but I have to admit I am jealous at other customers who seem to be the workers best friends. I never stayed, but I plan to one day park my computer there. Be sure to get a frequent user card if you are a caffeine addict. This is the place to get a lotta latte love..... First, the coffee itself is amazing. Bret (the coffee-geek owner) actually travels the world to bring home the bestest in coffees. Then, he actually roasts it on-site in the back. You can take your cup o' joe all the way in the back and sit and watch if it strikes your fancy. (Note: the iced coffee is cold-brewed. Not this double-strength shiite Starshmucks schelps together. Incredibly smooooth & tasty.) Second - The espresso is JUST as good! You can't go wrong with espresso this smooth and drinks so lovingly and carefully concocted. Third - Super-delish baked goodies. Bridget (barista extraordinaire, the Empress of Amazing Espresso Concoctions) bakes the scones herself daily (and the woman knows her way around an oven!) and makes the now-famous veggie cream cheese 4 de bagels. Both incredible. Never had something I didn't love. Last - and so far from least - The amazing people who work here. I'm lucky that my man was already BFF's w/ the whole crew by the time I met him - and them - and I have to say they are a lovely, creative, wild and whacky bunch with their very own unique outlooks on life. First time visiting and my girlfriend and I made the mistake of ordering an americano and a mocha. What we got was disappointing to say the least. My americano was exceptionally weak and tasted like hot water poured through a used coffee filter. The staff person as if I wanted room, I said no, so she then filled up the cup all the way to the brim. As a result, when I took off the lid to add a bit of sugar I got scalding, slightly brown water all over my hands. This was literally the worst americano I've ever been served. This is a great local coffee shop! There are usually several different kinds of drip coffee available. The beans come from all over the world but I believe they are all roasted in the back of the store. You can even buy their beans by the pound. The baristas are usually pretty good at recommending a coffee based on your preferences. They also have the standard selection of other coffee drinks: lattes, cappuccinos, americanos, etc. The hot chocolate is also usually pretty good as they are not heavy handed with the chocolate syrup. There are also a decent selection of prepared food options. They usually have bagels, assorted pastries, cookies, and cold sandwiches. The seating area is pretty good. There are a good number if seats and a couple different seating options: cushioned chairs, four top tables, and hightops. Plus the wifi has always been great for me. So I've been here three times. 1.First time I went in and they had a trivia question which I answered correctly and got a free coffee! That was cool. 2. Next time I came in, was in a bit a of a hurry before work, there was about 3 people in line and no one behind the counter. I asked who was working and someone said "I think they are in the back" I left, went to mcdonald's drive through. 3. Last time I went in, a month ago, younger woman who worked there stopped ringing me up to violently spank/beat yell and curse at a small child, who she explained was her sister's, who had thrown him upon her and she didn't want to be watching him. I love supporting local coffee shops and was so happy to see one, in my grandmother's old hood. This coffee shop seems like it's still working out its kinks, but once it does, this will be a talked about shop. This coffee was great, especially since they're in carafes. During the forty min I was there, I saw two of them swapped out for fresh coffee. High five. The baristas were friendly and hustling; Starbucks could learn a thing or two. My biggest issue is that they should advertise that their breakfast sandwiches are frozen Jimmy Deen. Their pastries looked frozen and purchased, too; they're the kind you see in NYC bodegas. Great corner coffee shop. They used to let me bring my dog in when I ordered and even had a nice bowl setup if I wanted to sit outside with her and would give her a little treat. Apparently the Baltimore City Heath board has issue with this... which is redic, if you don't like it you should just take your business elsewhere. I am astonished at laws like this that force owners to make changes to their business... But everyone here is fantastic and very friendly, which was my whole point! They aren't open as much on the weekends, which does stink. I get breakfast from here sometimes and they are premade but get microwaved as a whole (bread + egg + meat) which make them a bit soggy. Wow, what a let down. I'm not in the area regularly, but I've been here three or four times in the last five years. The first few times I always enjoyed it and lamented that its location and lack of parking meant that I couldn't work it into my usual routine. But those drinks were GOOD and the drip coffee was excellent. The pastries have always been a sight for sore eyes, but passable. Unfortunately, on this most recent visit, I could not have asked for something more straightforward. Two medium mochas. Well, the barista fessed up after handing them over that she forgot the mocha part and took them back to do some fancy wizardry to "add mocha." I'm not sure exactly how things went so wrong but what I ultimately got handed was definitely not mocha and I'm pretty sure they forgot the espresso as well. It basically tasted like pure frothed milk. I'm not a picky person but this visit was essentially a disaster. I have tried to go out of my way to go here when I can but no more. I happened to be in the area and had some free time so I stopped in not expecting much but wow their espresso is actually pretty decent! I thoroughly enjoyed my iced hazelnut latte... was perfectly sweet and the espresso isn't bitter. I'm not really a fan of the atmosphere, although clean, there is something about it that I just don't really like- maybe the furniture makes it feel cheap....maybe because it's not bright enough? Not my favorite coffee in Baltimore but my pet gets treats and extra rubs and loves (they always wash their hand immediately after too!) good proximity too the park for walking adventures. Great place to pick up some coffee beans to brew at home. They roast their own, and while I'd like to see the roast date on the bag, the beans I've bought have always seemed fresh. As others have said, the service is very different depending on who is working the counter, but it's rarely good. I'd love to give these guys a 4/5 as they roast their own beans and their coffee is great, much better than anything you'd get at Starbucks, but the service really needs to improve. Was in the neighborhood for something and needed a caffeine fix. There was on street parking and I stopped in. The service was fast and friendly. They were out if a dark roast and to make up for it, the person behind the counter offered me a few free espresso shots instead of asking me to wait. I offered to pay (I support local businesses) and was refused. I really appreciate good service. I also appreciate good coffee and this was a really good cup. One other note. Apparently the manager? Owner? Heard some feedback from a customer about perceived poor service and was talking it over with another employee. I had braced for a "blame the customer" conversion but was pleasantly impressed that they talked about it with an eye on how they can address the concern. Today was my first visit to High Grounds, and I was very impressed! I met the owner and he took the time to show me the roasting room and discussed the whole process with me. What a great guy! I had a shot of espresso and purchased a bag of "Cafe De La Finca El Ocaso". Apparently it won the Cup of Excellence Award in Columbia. Well, the espresso was fantastic, very smooth. I just made a cup of the Columbian coffee that I bought (I used the pour over method at home), and it was amazing. Without a doubt one of the nicest cups of coffee I've ever had. She was so kind and attentive to me and ever person who came in despite if they were stopping in out of curiousness or a paying customer. She worked so hard to keep this space clean, vibrant, and enjoyable. There was not a moment I didn't see her working to making the shop a place for everyone. Hubby and I were headed to lunch at a nearby Pizzeria but arrived about 30 minutes before they opened so we decided to have a cup of coffee while we waited. We loved the quaint decor and all the local artwork displayed on the walls, definitely not what we were expecting when we walked in - pleasantly surprised. I ordered a Medium Italian Roast Coffee with a shot of espresso and Hazelnut and it was delicious. Smooth, bold and just enough espresso to do the trick and put some zing in my step. We checked out the different menu items while relaxing and will definitely be back to try the homemade chicken salad. I stumbled upon this place by accident while exploring the area. I ordered a spiced chai tea and my wife had a latte and bagel. The chai tea was a little sweet, but very good. I'm not sure where they get their baked goods, but the bagel was very tasty. There is ample seating inside and the place is modern, clean and cute. They also have outdoor seating and bike racks. Being new to the canton area I wanted to find a great coffee shop !! :( I went here for almost two weeks until I couldn't take it anymore. They were out of something everyday. Wether it was milk, sugar, lids. They were out of lids for an entire week, they could still be out of them for all I know but I stopped going finally. The people that work there are pretty nice. Except for the girl covered in homemade tattoos, she was very rude when I asked for milk which they were out of. She is actually the manager? Just didn't work for us. Help was pretty clueless, and our sausage egg and cheese sandwiches were piping hot out of the microwave (except for the egg and sausage, which still had some ice crystals). Atmosphere was nice with good selection of magazines and clean tables. And the coffee, which we bought and took home, was exceptional. I like it here a lot -- a great place to study with friendly baristas and decent coffee. It's small, and there's a trickle of neighborhood people who come and go, adding some definitely homegrown Baltimore character (which you sometimes have to be in the mood for). Good outdoor seating for the nice weather, and steady internet. They don't have much in the way of food, and the inside can be cramped with just a few windows, but it's great for a coffee drink and a few hours of studying! read more
