GO ELSEWHERE! Buyer BEWARE & don't believe the tv ads. Even after multiple surgeries the results came out hideous & unattractive.

As I planned to have both of my eyes done over the next few months, for laser glaucoma surgery, i…read morebegan going to Dr. Tokunaga (who I was referred to by my regular eye doctor Dr. Chan at Honolulu Vision Care Center in Hawaii-Kai) at the Aloha Vision Consultants location in Aiea as it was closer to where I now live. I went to both pre and post exams from September 2024 to my final follow-up in June 2025. Several of the post operation exams were performed by Dr. Soriano with the final follow-up exam appointment done by Dr. Tokunaga. Besides having the laser glaucoma surgery, i opted also for near AND far vision corrections AND the procedure to lessen the eye pressure from the mild glaucoma that I have had for a few years. Yay! No need for use of my gas permeable contacts ANYMORE that i have used since 1985 and glasses before than since the 5th grade! My first surgery took place on Veterans Day on November 12, 2024 on my left eye (as that eye was my strong eye) since i would without the use of glasses or contacts until my next eye surgery to my right eye in February, the 24th to be exact. The actual eye surgeries for both eyes took place at an eye surgery center on the second floor of the Dole Cannery Square in Iwilei. My right eye post-surgery did not' 'heal' as quickly as my left eye surgery back in November, so I had to go to one more post follow up exams... which by that time, my vision had noticeably improved ! The feeling of warmth and compassion by EVERY staff member was so genuine and not a 'put on show' that when I had my last follow up with Dr Tokunaga in mid-June, I (sincerely) shook his hand and really wanted to break down and cry to tell him how welcomed i felt with he and his staff! I know, I know...I'm a man at 66... but hey, I still have feelings you know... haha... You know that i now live in Waipahu and not the east side... i did have strong thoughts of changing my eye exam location to here in Aiea. But I still also have my allegiance to Dr. Chan and staff at Hawaii-Kai where i have gone there since 2006.. so hence, I will still gladly make the drive to Hawaii Kai. But Aloha Vison Care Aiea ---- ALL OF YOU... deserve the compliments that i have to talk about! btw, parking there at that medical building complex is $1 per 30 minutes...no need to stamp anything at the doctor's office...

The office hours posted outside said 7:45 a.m. and it was still dark with a short wait. Felt relieved when the lights suddenly turned on and the door was held open. Was given a 5 page handout on a clipboard to fill out. Their questions about your total body, history etc was the most comprehensive I've ever seen. So many patients going in and coming out before my name was called. The female that took me to one of the rooms on the left used machines and even a headpiece to check my vision. I've never seen machines like those before. Then we proceeded to two more rooms for various tests and measurements. So different from my eye doctor's ones. Returning to the first room Dr. Tokunaga knocked and entered. He introduced himself, asked a few questions then went over the findings. He informed me of 3 types of lens that can be implanted for cataracts ranging to $3500. He explained the differences of each lens and the procedure on a model of the eye. I asked about the alien appearance of one of my friends' eyes in the light and he said all lens have a refelection. I will return in 2 months in August for scheduling surgery one month later. Had to ask about recovery time. You return here one day after surgery to have the patch removed. He recommends staying on island a week after. Surgery is performed at an eye center at Dole in town. He would notify my eye doctor and regular doctor of his findings. He said take care and I'll need medical clearance before the pending September surgery. The total exam took about half an hour and he said the cataract surgery was not a rush for me but since I was there...the actual procedure is about 15 minutes plus a few hours before you are released to go home. Okay, one appointment and one eye at a time.

Once I submitted their online form, I got a call back and Robert left me a detail message including pricing. He said to go in for Aiea location. The day I went in, the office looked really cluttered and unorganized. I saw muliple personal items of the staffs just left around in the office... When I was doing the eye exam, I could not see well on one eye, was wondering why....then after a while I figured their machine lense was dirty, and I had to tell the Dr. it was the lense. I have never had that happen to me at an eye doctor before. The price I got over the phone was 4100 dollars for military dependent. My friend who was also a military dependent at the time paid 3800 for both eyes. I negotiated with the Dr. and he said he could do it for 3900. A month later, I got a bill for thier FREE consultation priced over $240. I was stunned because on the website it said free and even the day of the consultation, I made sure with the receptionist as well. (Matter fact I have never seen any eye doctor who does not do free consultation for lasik). I called the office to have the matter corrected numerous times and the lady who is in charge of billing never picks up her phone so I left voice messages every time, yet NEVER calls me back. I went on their website again and they clearly say free consultation. On top of that, now I found the price list for lasik and they quoated me higher price than what it is listed on their websited even after the negotiation. This business is a scam. I would never ever get anything done here if I were you. I totally believe the one star review someone else left about this Dr. office.

They didn't:( so I started searching for an eye doctor that could fit me in ASAP. I called a few places, many of which could not see me for a few weeks. I finally found Hawaii Vision Clinic and spoke to a super sweet receptionist who fit me in for this morning(called yesterday afternoon). I was checked in quickly, which was awesome given that their waiting area was full. Dr. Wong was quick but efficient and super easy to talk to. He was able to identify what was going on and gave me eye drops. I'm very happy to have found this office, and will be back again when I need to.

The following day, after my husband had an eye procedure at Iwilei's Eye Surgery Center of Hawai'i,…read morehe had a follow-up appointment with his opthalmologist, Dr. James Lai. Because we live in town, my husband usually has appointments with Dr. Lai at the Honolulu office in the Hale Pawa'a Building. Still, this post-surgery follow-up appointment was scheduled at this Aiea medical center. But even though we had to travel 9 miles to Aiea, we didn't mind the drive because my husband was scheduled for the clinic's first appointment at 8:00 AM, and we would be traveling counterflow during peak weekday traffic hours. When we arrived at Pali Momi's Medical Office Building, we checked the Hospital Directory to confirm Dr. Lai's office number as suite 470 since several other ophthalmologists work for the Retina Consultants of Hawai'i. We arrived by 7:45 A.M. and found at least five other patients we recognized sitting in the surgery center's lobby, waiting outside the office door. We asked if anyone had tried opening the office door after asking if anyone else had the first appointment with Dr. Lai. Apparently, everyone else's appointment was after my husband's and the door was unlocked. Within five minutes of checking in with the receptionist, one of the nurses escorted my husband to an examination room, removed his bandages, assessed his vision, inquired if he was experiencing pain or complications overnight, and then my husband returned out to the lobby for a few minutes before being seen by Dr. Lai. We were delighted with Dr. Lai and his office staff's professionalism, efficiency, and friendliness. Also, my husband's recovery has been going well, with improved vision, and he has not experienced any pain.

I've had an ongoing eye issue for 7 years, I've seen 5 separate doctors over this time, most of which have been good, but Dr James Lai stands out amongst all of them. He is caring, detailed, and skillful. I recently had surgery and 2 days later my vision is to a place I actually had given up hope I would ever achieve again. It brought me to tears, and I can say, without hesitation, that this would not have been possible without Dr Lai and his amazing support team at Retina Consultants. Not just for the surgery itself, but for the consistency and high level of care they have provided me over the last 5 years. Good things are always worth the wait. Huge thank you to Retina Consultants and Dr Lai.
