As I planned to have both of my eyes done over the next few months, for laser glaucoma surgery, i began going to Dr. Tokunaga (who I was referred to by my regular eye doctor Dr. Chan at Honolulu Vision Care Center in Hawaii-Kai) at the Aloha Vision Consultants location in Aiea as it was closer to where I now live. I went to both pre and post exams from September 2024 to my final follow-up in June 2025. Several of the post operation exams were performed by Dr. Soriano with the final follow-up exam appointment done by Dr. Tokunaga. Besides having the laser glaucoma surgery, i opted also for near AND far vision corrections AND the procedure to lessen the eye pressure from the mild glaucoma that I have had for a few years. Yay! No need for use of my gas permeable contacts ANYMORE that i have used since 1985 and glasses before than since the 5th grade! My first surgery took place on Veterans Day on November 12, 2024 on my left eye (as that eye was my strong eye) since i would without the use of glasses or contacts until my next eye surgery to my right eye in February, the 24th to be exact. The actual eye surgeries for both eyes took place at an eye surgery center on the second floor of the Dole Cannery Square in Iwilei. My right eye post-surgery did not' 'heal' as quickly as my left eye surgery back in November, so I had to go to one more post follow up exams... which by that time, my vision had noticeably improved ! The feeling of warmth and compassion by EVERY staff member was so genuine and not a 'put on show' that when I had my last follow up with Dr Tokunaga in mid-June, I (sincerely) shook his hand and really wanted to break down and cry to tell him how welcomed i felt with he and his staff! I know, I know...I'm a man at 66... but hey, I still have feelings you know... haha... You know that i now live in Waipahu and not the east side... i did have strong thoughts of changing my eye exam location to here in Aiea. But I still also have my allegiance to Dr. Chan and staff at Hawaii-Kai where i have gone there since 2006.. so hence, I will still gladly make the drive to Hawaii Kai. But Aloha Vison Care Aiea ---- ALL OF YOU... deserve the compliments that i have to talk about! btw, parking there at that medical building complex is $1 per 30 minutes...no need to stamp anything at the doctor's office... read more

First visit here referred by my regular eye doctor. Was a bit apprehensive even though it was only for a consult. Left home at 7 a.m. for an 8 a.m. appointment. The office hours posted outside said 7:45 a.m. and it was still dark with a short wait. Felt relieved when the lights suddenly turned on and the door was held open. Was given a 5 page handout on a clipboard to fill out. Their questions about your total body, history etc was the most comprehensive I've ever seen. So many patients going in and coming out before my name was called. The female that took me to one of the rooms on the left used machines and even a headpiece to check my vision. I've never seen machines like those before. Then we proceeded to two more rooms for various tests and measurements. So different from my eye doctor's ones. Returning to the first room Dr. Tokunaga knocked and entered. He introduced himself, asked a few questions then went over the findings. He informed me of 3 types of lens that can be implanted for cataracts ranging to $3500. He explained the differences of each lens and the procedure on a model of the eye. I asked about the alien appearance of one of my friends' eyes in the light and he said all lens have a refelection. I will return in 2 months in August for scheduling surgery one month later. Had to ask about recovery time. You return here one day after surgery to have the patch removed. He recommends staying on island a week after. Surgery is performed at an eye center at Dole in town. He would notify my eye doctor and regular doctor of his findings. He said take care and I'll need medical clearance before the pending September surgery. The total exam took about half an hour and he said the cataract surgery was not a rush for me but since I was there...the actual procedure is about 15 minutes plus a few hours before you are released to go home. I was working on my car when a piece of metal flew in my eye. I was feeling some pain and was beginning to get worried when i called to see if they were even open during this pandemic. Luckily, they were. The receptionist was very nice and asked me a bunch of prescreening covid questions, she said i should come right away. I was able to be seen within in the hour. I was seen by Dr Tokunaga who was able to pluck out the piece of metal. He also prescribed me some drops to prevent infection. He explained everything and was very thorough. Pros: - office was open early (~815a), in case you arrive before open hours - new patient forms available online to complete prior to arrival (vs arriving extra early to fill out forms) - rescheduling appointments was relatively easy, you may have to leave a message and wait for a call back but they responded within the hour -multiple office locations - efficient, MD dictates while an assistant inputs into computer - friendly staff, left my consultation feeling well-informed Cons: -parking structure is limited and can get crowded, $1 per half hour (supposedly there's another parking area but fortunately I haven't had to head that way) - getting an initial appt can have a long wait, but if willing to go to another office you may be able to schedule sooner Verdict: would definitely go back if another consultation was needed read more

To protect myself and others around me, I try to wear a mask in public. Or how about this, have you ever worn a mask and made a sudden turn of your head and the mask shoots off your face like a sling shot? My favorite is the one that has a nice Aloha shirt look and feel. The center of the mask is made of a thick material that bows out creating a pocket and space to cool down one's hot breath. I golf twice a week and I can tell you this mask works great when walking around the clubhouse and when teeing off. I'm not huffing and puffing trying to catch my breath or feel like I'm in a sauna. And of course, no more looking like a creature from the black lagoon since the material is thick and bowed out and won't be sucked in and out of my mouth. Also, instead of elastic straps that fit around my ears, the masks from Aloha Vision Consultants have elastic straps that extend around my head. The straps are adjustable and makes the mask snug on my face and comfortable. Another nice feature is that the mask from Aloha Vision Consultants has a thin metal wire that runs along the top of the mask to mold around the bridge of my nose. This makes the mask more air tight and prevents the mask from sliding down my face. The bottom of the mask also extends well beyond my chin so outside air will have a tough time seeping in. I usually see Dr. Yuen at the Kapahulu location but today I saw him here. It is a very nice and comfortable office located in a great building. I'm so happy that there are three different locations to see Dr. Yuen and Dr. Tokunaga. The staff always gets me in somehow at one of their locations based on my work schedule or the urgency of needing an appointment. Also, even if they do fit me in, I never have to wait very long because the office is run so efficiently and because of Dr. Yuens speed. I love going to Aloha Vision Consultants, fun conversations and no worries for me knowing my eyes are being cared for by the best. read more

As a new patient, I expected quality customer service and a smooth visit, especially from a larger practice. That was not what I got. The receptionist was not friendly nor welcoming, and had the attitude of a rude auntie. I arrived on time for my appointment and waiting about 20 minutes until being brought into the exam room. The assistants were very loud and unprofessional. Felt like I was in a high school hallway. I didn't get to meet the ophthalmologist, as I was there for an annual exam and was examined by the optometrist. She was nice, but seemed a bit disorganized. She was very soft-spoken, so trying to hear what she was saying through her multiple masks was nearly impossible to understand. I told her I needed more contacts ordered and she told me it'd be taken care of at the front desk. Mind you, the type of contacts I wanted to order was never asked about throughout the entire visit. At the end of the exam, she failed to let me know that I was allowed to put my contacts back in before walking out the door, causing me to believe the exam wasn't over. Basic procedural steps seemed to be overlooked or forgotten. The same receptionist provided me with my exam summary paper and nothing more was said. I was so over this whole visit, that I decided to just leave without asking more about my contact order. About a week or so later, I called to inquire about my contact order and the lady who answered was most likely the same receptionist I dealt with at my initial appointment. The receptionist repeatedly cut me off and said she'd have someone call me back. She ended the phone call before I could say thank you. Don't know if she is an ageist or is just unhappy with her job. Two weeks have passed and no one has called me back to follow up. I ended up having to call them. The reason why I'm so dissatisfied with this office is mainly due to its employees, not the doctors. I am very disappointed as I am familiar with the quality of offices within Aiea Medical Building. This was the worst medical office experience I have ever had. Definitely did not feel welcomed nor cared for, and will not be returning. read more

A very pleasant person asked if I was a patient of theirs and I related that they were for my older mother and that I would come to purchase them. Aloha, I see througj one eye basically. I love to read and as the years passed, my vision just got blurrier and blurrier despite having prescription glasses. Often times I would cry because I could not see as perfectly anymore. But Dr. Yuen and his associates did mot give up on me. They gave me courage by giving me all the tools I would need to make an imformed decision. They gave me options. They patiently educated me on the many options I have including doimg laser or surgery. Both him and my PCP worked together. That gave me a great peace of mind. You see I am elderly, I have diabetes, hypertension amd anxiety. Most of all, Dr. Yuen gave me spCe and time to make my own decision amd that I greatly appreciated. My surgery went well and I am a happier person now because I can see more clearly now. Where there were tears of sadness and frustration before, now only tears of happiness amd gratitude remains. I was visiting Oahu and had an issue with one of my eyes so I made an appointment at Aloha Vision Consultants. I saw THE BEST eye doctor I have ever seen (I am 68 yrs old). Dr Gilbert Yamamoto M.D. did a very thorough examination of my eyes (even took a picture of the inside of my eyes) and determined the issue wasn't my retina. While my eye was dilating he talked with my wife, for about 10 minutes and explained what the issue was with my right eye. He asked that I see him before I returned home to make sure everything was OK. I did, he contacted my Eye Doctor in Rhode Island with faxed all of the info he had generated on my right eye. I think Dr. Yuen, although busy, is really OK. His staff however, have poor training in dealing with patients. Quick and poor explanations...everybody is in a rush. For the patient, this is not good. I mentioned this to the lady at the front desk and she " i'll mention what You said"....I don't believe her. The fact that they smile and are nice to patients isn't enough. Dr. Yuen is incredibly rude and needs to work on his bedside manner. My elderly mother was here for cataract evaluation. We had to wait for almost an hour in the waiting room. Then Dr. Yuen scuttled into the room and proceeded to completely ignore my mom. He talked really fast and was dismissive and condescending. She asked if the surgery was really necessary, and he said, "The number one cause of death in the elderly is falling, so you need to have your cataracts removed so you can see." Yes, he said death. He told her she wouldn't need glasses anymore, and she said, "But I like to wear glasses." He said, "Yeah, I know a lot of old women want to cover the big bags under their eyes." I am so happy that i get a chance to have a last minute appt. with them. i had an irritation in my eyes and it is so itchy and red because I accidentally forgot i have contacts on and i slept on it, But thank Godness Dr.yuen is still in kapahulu office and took care of me and gave me eyedrop to take until my irritation/redness gone away. My experience coming to this office is amazing! Staff is so friendly and happy and the doctors are so knowledgeable and patient. All of my questions and concerns were answered. The staff takes the time to explain what they are doing every step of the way when doing testings. I normally go to their Kapahulu location but I called one Saturday because I needed a last minute appointment cause I thought I had a infection and was going to travel in a few days and didn't want to travel if I was contagious. They managed to squeeze me in at their Aiea location and I got some drops for my eyes. The waiting room is smaller than their Kapahulu location and you have to pay for parking, but when you need a last minute appointment and they're able to squeeze you in, you go for it. The best part I like about Aloha Vision Consultants is that they have appointments on Saturday. Even if I have to schedule my appointment mid-morning, I would rather have it on Saturday then burn up my sick leave hours at work and go through the hassle of finding someone to cover the front desk. Once in a while I have to wait past my appointed time, but it might not be their fault. A patient might have come late to their appointment which pushed back the appointments after it. Overall my experience with them has been a positive one over the 1-2 years I've been going to them. read more

When I needed a follow up check up appointment on a work day, I was able to visit the Aiea office of Aloha Vision Consultants. I was happy the staff offered me an appointment at this location because it was closer to my workplace than the Kapahulu and Kuakini locations were. I was able to go to my appointment and get to work with the least disruption to my day! I saw Dr. Yuen at this office and I like that all the desk workers and technicians are the same, no matter the location I visit, and as always, everyone is friendly and helpful. Unfortunately I have to say that the staff has changed immensely. When they call to remind you of an appointment they are very curt and cold and their tone is speaking to a child being reprimanded. As for the doctors the only one that I know that has a good reputation And good manners is Dr. Carlton Yuen. I don't find a manager and he helpful at this point this is the only reason I am voicing my opinion. If I talk to them the way they speak to me I don't think they would appreciate it. As a 71 year old lady raised with manners and dignity this is not what we are having today day with the younger generation unfortunately. Again, I applaud Dr Yuen For his kindness professionalism and integrity. This will be the only reason why I'm staying with this operation at this stage of the game. If he declines any more I will look elsewhere what people have more polish behavior and professionalism because obviously they're not training that people properly which falls on the fault of the manager. read more

I needed an Ophthalmologist when I moved here from the Mainland so I went online and found Dr. Yuen and made an appointment. It has been the best decision I ever made. Dr Yuen and his staff are the best. I have worn glasses for 50 yrs nd was told I would always need to wear glasses, my eye sight was that bad. I just had cataract surgery in both eyes, Dr. Yuen did such a great job with my surgeries, I no longer have to wear glasses. If you need an eye doctor I 100% recommend Dr. Yuen. I switched here from another Ophthalmologist who hung a sign in his office " IF YOU CAN'T WAIT HERE FOR 3 HOURS FOR YOUR APPOINTMENT YOU SHOULD RESCHEDULE... [They were always overbooking and so far behind in their appointments.] I DID, rescheduled with another Doctor. Now I come here. appointments are quick, staff friendly, parking available & reasonable, close to home... in Aiea, he also has offices in Kapahulu, I'e been to the first two & they have another in Kuakini Med Plaza. I needed to be squeezed in for an appointment when something flew in my eye... They were booked solid BUT the staff told me to come in and wait, they'll squeeze me in... THEY DID. They even can get your glassed there. Where else does the Business make it convenient to have 3 locations for your appointment. Dr. Yuen is easy to talk to, explains everything.
