Located in north jersey near Route 80 is this classic dinner, with a 70s looking exterior. Inside is warm, inviting with a nice up to date interior. Our waiter was on the younger side, but he was a pro. Friendly, attentive as needed, and good engaging conversation. We were impressed. I had the cream of turkey soup, well seasoned, excellent amount of turkey, and just enough veggies. Excellent. For my entree I had a shrimp po boy. Might have been one of the best sandwiches I've eaten at a diner. Fresh shrimp, well seasoned, perfectly cooked, Bread fresh and perfectly toasted. The sauce was perfect. I've been a loyal customer at Hibernia Diner for years and have generally had good experiences--until now. I ordered food for pickup, and after waiting close to an hour, I sent my daughter inside to get it while I waited in the car. She's a young Black girl, and despite standing there for several minutes, she was ignored by staff. When I went in to ask what was happening, the host became defensive and blamed my daughter for the delay rather than offering an apology or explanation. The interaction felt unnecessarily hostile. To make things worse, when I got home, the food wasn't freshly cooked and the portions were much smaller than usual for the same order. I've supported this diner for a long time, but this experience left me feeling disrespected and concerned. No family should be made to feel uncomfortable or dismissed--especially a child. I hope management reviews this incident seriously and provides staff with training to ensure every customer is treated with basic courtesy and fairness. read more

This brings us to the Hibernia Diner, easy on & off from RT 80, super - friendly/efficient staff, and a modernized diner menu with a lot of innovation, that worked for our meal. I had this Turkey Sandwich platter, (Kind of like an old school Thanksgiving Sandwich) Cranberry Bread or mayo (can't remember) nice sagey stuffing, moist turkey, a winner. My GF got some kind of breakfasty egg thing, don't like eggs, can't remember, she liked it. Everything served fresh & hot, not sitting under the heat lamp for 10 minutes. My big disappointment (and I know this is a fraught issue for the different breakfast potato camps.) Hash Browns instead of Home Fries. When doordashing breakfast, ordering an "egg sandwich" with meat, the sandwich shows up meat, but no egg. After happening twice, we stopped ordering from them. So, came across this place through google and had great ratings. Great diner feel and right off the highway and major exits. Overall, it was 10am on a Monday and there was a good amount of people dining in. I sat alone and was seated by a younger gentleman. I was then handed over to Mohammed who was there doing his basic job, definitely different from how the service standard was presented by the manager, who was very attentive :[ he was the only reason the rating is at 3. My server took my order, dropped it off and totally forgot about me or didn't care, I only mattered when he dropped the bill. Did t come by to refill my coffee or check on me and see how my food was or even follow up on how everything tasted... I guess you would call this basic service... he did not provide it. The manager did see my distress look of "where the heck is my refill and I would like something additional look" and headed in my direction, twice. I wanted honey mustard and a coffee refill, but my server left as soon as he dropped my food :[ food tasted a bit warm and as if it sat for 5/10 minutes before it got to my table. Every time I go to this restaurant I love it more. The interior and exterior are a mix of modern and retro design which is stylish and comfy. The employees are friendly and attentive. The seafood bisque was chock full of seafood with no fake thickeners. It was one of the best I'd had anywhere. The slightly sweet browned coated salmon served with smashed potatoes, and savory asparagus with a touch of hollandaise melded both sweet and savory, luxe and simple, in perfect harmony. I brought home a peanut butter explosion cake and I expect it to be fantastic. I can't wait to go back. A New Jersey diner, which we have craved for in Florida! For those who have not experienced a NJ diner, hard to convey the feelings. A new piace, at least it was not here when we left the Garden State several years ago. Other than a small hiccup at being seated (manager was talking to a waitress while we sat at the hostess desk), a good service, with the young waitress very amicable and a good customer service. I tried the South Philly Italian Pork (Pork Cutlet, Fresh Mozzarella, Potatoes, Roasted Tomatoes, Garlic Scented Spinach, Balsamic Drizzle, Ciabatta Roll), whip at $13 was a winner. I substituted the fries with coleslaw. I loved the tenderness of the cutlet and the balsamic touch! Two things that moved my vote to this low (other than how we were greeted): 1. a convenience fee added to the bill, which, according with the same manager mentioned above, "is the fee we charge for you using a credit card". Not cool, and it may be close to being illegal. 2. The young cashier was not trained to process credit card charges, was absolutely not her fault, rather management's. This Diner has been a staple in Rockaway, Morris County , and NJ since I can remember. I remember coming here as a kid with my parents as I grew up in Rockaway. The food is always great, the people are always great. I want to pass this great tradition on to my children as well and I hope they stay and continue one of the great few diners and places left in this state. Of coarse no trip to any Jersey diner is complete without an order of disco fries and they have the best. They've done a Renovation on the diner and looks great and has more room and the food has got better and better over the years.
