Been here a few times now and we have a blast every single time! (But be sure to make a reservation.) They're switched over to a new system where you can pick songs. But I think the songs database you can choose from is still a little limited. But no worries, you can still use the old system to find whatever song you're looking for. When we told the worker, he was so nice about it and assured us he would tell the boss so that the new system would be able to accommodate everyone. I love that they provide some instruments like tambourines to accompany your mics. But I think the rooms could definitely use some lower ac. Such a fun spot and pretty reasonably priced! read more

Came here with some friends to celebrate my husbands birthday and I'll say, it was a lot of fun! I didn't really know what to expect, as I've never been to a private karaoke spot before, but it ended up being super easy to navigate and go at our own pace. Love the fact that it was BYOB and BYOF. We just ordered pizzas and brought our own little cupcakes, beers, etc. Staff was nice enough to take a group photo of us after wrapping up our room. There were a couple of famous, well-known songs we were hoping to find on the list that weren't there. Pretty surprising again as they were well known songs by well known artists. Went with some friends and we had a blast. The music is turned up loud enough that it isn't embarrassing to sing even if you're not the best singer in the world. But it's not annoyingly loud either. The rooms are comfortable and very clean. The only reason that I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is that the song choice is pretty limited. I wasn't searching for strange underground artists or anything but they only had about 40% of the songs that I looked for. Also, they have music videos from different songs playing while the lyrics for the song you picked were running and I would have preferred not to have that. read more

I rung in my 30th Birthday at Hi Tunes and had such a good time! I had previously been there for another person's birthday and knew that it would be a great spot to host my celebration. Setting up the reservation was super easy through email and the business was so accommodating. I brought food and supplies on my own but they let me know they had cutlery and plates, as well as tape and scissors available to help decorate. They let me hang up my own decor and get food delivered and were SO sweet and kind. They also had no problem extending my reservation by a few hours because we were having so much fun. This was my first time at a karaoke place. The place has clean rooms and a bring your own food/BYOB policy. They gave us cups for our drinks too, which was really nice. I was really disappointed because we noticed some very popular songs in the song book that were not actually on the digital karaoke machine, which is a huge shame. The remote is very unintuitive. The screen had really random videos accompanying the songs like skiing or nature scenes, which were really funny. We paid $130 for 10 people for two hours, which is very reasonable. Perhaps I have high standards for karaoke, but the places I've been to in LA and SF are rather more modern and suitable. --- They did not have any of my go-to karaoke songs. They do not have anything by - Rise Against - Bullet for my Valentine - Steam Powered Giraffe - The Cab - Michael Franti & Spearhead - Matisyahu - Stephen (who sang Crossfire) - Andy Grammer (except one song I didn't recognize) - The Human League - American Authors - Lord Huron - Madden (Golden Light especially) They don't have - Avicii's The Nights - The Killers' Human, Spaceman - OneRepublic's Secrets - A Million Dreams (The Greatest Showman OST), Tightrope I had to dig very hard into songs they did have that I could sing. They do have lots of Maroon 5. Songs they do have: - Fools Garden's Lemon Tree - Panic at the Disco's High Hopes - some songs by The Script - most of the pop songs you're probably tired of hahaha Surely I expected more songs than a retail karaoke machine! (such as one my friend owns). --- Came here with a group of 8 friends. $35/hr for 8 people is a good deal and we enjoyed the experience. Choosing songs -- The website is all in Korean but thankfully there is Google Translate on Chrome mobile. The remote control is unintuitive to use, and you have aim directly at the infrared receiver and perhaps try a few times. Song selection -- See above. Very disappointing selection, although it does have many of the songs you'd expect. Music videos -- Most music videos were very random and grossly mismatched to the song. It was often comical or distracting, and using a uniform nature background or something would make much more sense. Or just get everyone buzzed on your BYOB hard seltzer, and laugh at how out of sync and no-sequitur things are. Scoring -- There is some strange scoring from 80-100 at the end of each song, and it seems somewhat random, or maybe correlates to singing volume? I had a sore throat and got 99, 100, and 99, while the rest of our party only got two 99+. The screen also takes away from singing time, forcing like a 10 sec transition between songs. Noise levels between rooms -- We could definitely hear songs between the other rooms, especially during transitions between our songs or quieter instrumentals. It was pretty funny hearing other people actually, although not a great sign for a karaoke place. Restrooms -- there are only two one-person restrooms (non-unisex), so there are frequently restroom lines, especially as the other rooms were full and everyone was drinking. Def a no-no for a karaoke place to have long restroom lines, in the already narrow hallways. It's definitely not practical to keep any social distance with strangers here. Water -- There is no water fountain or otherwise free water. There is water bottles available, at $1.08 for a 25 oz bottle. They said the restroom tap water is not safe to drink, but going to buy water bottles is so out of the way (our room is next to bathroom but far from staff), people just end up drinking tap. For some reason, the tap burned my throat a bit but looked and smelled clear. TIP: You can run the warm tap water over an unopened drink to heat it up (say, if your throat is sore but you only have cold drinks). read more

The rooms are private so it's like making a fool of yourself in front of only your accepting and understanding friends. :) It can have a wait list on weekends, but otherwise, you'll just have to deal with a few Asian teenagers smoking out front. See picture for pricing. We paid about $25 for 1.5hrs and 4 people. The place is open until 2am S-T & and until 5am on F-S. It's in a pretty quiet shopping complex next to a Mexican restaurant. Speakers systems have great sound. You can hear the other rooms only a little bit from the hallway and only in your private room when there is no music inside. They give you a couple of mikes covered with a little hair net type of cover and you can use tambourines or maracas while singing. read more

I've been to my fair share of karaoke places, from the really ghetto to the really fancy in multiple cities, and as far as the ones that Austin has that I've been to, this is my favorite place by far because: 1. Wireless mics that get shower caps. No more embarrassing moments tripping over mic wires and getting tangled. And you can be sanitary while channeling your inner rapper self. And with that wireless mic you just feel so...professional. Lol. 2. They give you maracas & fun lighting. Because tambourines are NOT enough. And the lights change with every song! 3. BYOB policy. Because yeah....personally curated alcohol selection is always the best and most cost effective. They don't have the most extensive list of songs but the best song selection if you're international and do the works (Kpop, Cpop, Jpop, and English songs). This place was recently remodelled, which is a huge plus in my book. The previously early 00's decor has been replaced with sleek wood-back couches, lovely wall decals, fresh coats of paint, and updated song books that make it a little easier to find tunes. I've been spoiled on the karaoke experience because of a very well-loved Korean-style noraebang in Boston, where I attended college. Hi Tunes is the equivalent of that here in Austin, and I fell in love with how familiar it was the moment I walked in. Unlike Western-style karaoke, which is usually sung in bars in front of a huge crowd, Asian style karaoke involves a group of friends going into private rooms to sing. The facilities are very well maintained, and the owners are extremely friendly. If it's your first time using the system (which is in Korean), they'll patiently explain it to you. There are batteries at the front desk in case the ones in your mics run out. And here's an example of great service: we almost ran out of time, but had 3 songs reserved in the system. The front desk added 20 free minutes to our time so that we didn't have to skip/miss the songs. Super nice :) Their song selection is also huge! They have mainly English, Korean, Japanese, and Chinese songs... but there are also a few other gems such as Vietnamese, Thai, Russian, and Spanish. I was even able to sing Poupee de Cire Poupee de Son last time I went (a French song that won the Eurovision in the 1960's). English songs are not super up to date, but they have such a wide variety it doesn't matter - most people can find classics to sing. There are Disney songs, 80's tunes, old-school rock, Broadway, and much more. I also enjoyed that they had a good mix of both Mandarin and Cantonese oldies. Keep in mind that songs are written in their native language, and most of the lyrics are shown in the native language, so if you're singing in a language you can't read well (e.g. me trying to read hangul), then you might want to keep your phone nearby to search up romanized lyrics. The updated system does add some Korean romaja, and most Chinese songs now have pinyin... but this obviously backfires when the song is in Cantonese. No romanization of any sort for Japanese songs. My family frequents this place several times a year and we always have fun. We usually stay for 4 hours or so and end up paying $130, which is actually *very* cheap compared to karaoke rooms in other big cities (as reference, a 2-hour stint in my Boston haunt would probably have cost us $150). The rooms are clean, service is attentive and everyone is having fun. Even the front desk starts you off on a great foot: Cheerful screens show slideshows of alluring Korean pop stars, and a big bowl of candy invites you to take some without even asking. You'll be led to your individual room with ample seating. And it's BYOB. You're charged for the room by the hour which isn't too expensive if you bring along a few friends. Everyone, young and old, loves a good round of karaoke, especially when you don't have to sing in front of the entire bar. Make sure you book your karaoke night in advance, up to 24 hours is recommended. You might not be able to make a same-day reservation on Friday or Saturday because this place is popular! We had a great time at Hi Tunes this past weekend for a friend's going away party. The rooms were clean and spacious, if bare, and the sound system was great. I would, however, advise English speakers to avoid this place. The English song selection here is very limited. Pretty much every song you'd expect any karaoke place to have it doesn't have. 80's hits? Nope. Motown classics? Nope. 90's rock? Somewhat, mostly bad mainstream radio rock. On top of that, the control "panel" that you have to use to select songs is the worst. Only one of our group could figure it out and they basically ended up being tech support all night. It was like work. All of the menus are in Korean, so you're kind of guessing wtf is going on if you don't know Korean. Because of these two issues, there were stretches when we couldn't find any songs that we wanted to do and everyone sat around talking and drinking (which was fun, but not what you want from a karaoke room). I'd highly suggest looking elsewhere if you plan on singing English favorites, but my Korean friend said the K-pop selection is the best in town! read more

Strobe lights galore as well! The mics are wireless and they come with shower caps. The rooms are clean and spacious. Grab some dinner at SOHA, conveniently located in the same shopping center (LITERALLY around the corner), before or after your karaoke! The rooms are extremely spacious so no matter your party size you'll be set. Also, the staff are extremely tech savvy, so if you have any technical issues they'll know exactly how to fix it. They have the most expansive level of songs that I've seen at a karaoke bar, and they have a QR code so you can have full search access to all of their available songs from your phone (instead of having to flip through a huge book of songs) . They have three microphone active for any song compared to two of other places. The sick stand up microphone also is hugely impactful. 2. There is star power/quality for medium and large size rooms. I had a seriously fun time! My roommate and I decided we wanted to go karaoke on a whim and one of her friends had recommended Hi Tunes. After calling just about everyone we knew, we only ended up with 2 other people who were interested. I called ahead to confirm they had rooms available and reserved one of the small rooms. Hi Tunes is in the same shopping center as Studio Tilee, and there was lots of parking. It's BYOB and you can also bring food, if you want. The inside looked brand new and was decorated whimsically with lots of flowers and butterflies and things of that sort. The room itself had 3 padded benches arranged in a U-shape, and a disco light thing that was just on. I had never karaoke-d before, and fortunately my friends knew what to do. There was a complicated looking remote with a lot of Korean characters on it, but there were also English labels on there. Then there were 2 giant tomes of all the songs they had, with 70% being Korean/Asian pop and 30% being US Top40, oldies and misc. They have something for everyone. (They even had "I'm On A Boat" which was super awesome even if my friends didn't get it.) Sometimes the captions are misspelled or wrong but if you know the song well, it shouldn't be a problem! I don't have anything to compare this place to because this was my first time karaoke-ing, but I would definitely rate it 5 stars for cleanliness, relevant-to-my-interest-ness, inexpensiveness and awesomeness. read more

The best karaoke experience I've had in a while! The staff are really friendly (and there's a cute cat that likes to sit outside). Hi Tunes charges per room, per hour. NOT per person, which is pretty nice. For the smaller 5-6 person rooms, they are $20 per hour. Extremely reasonable! 3 friends and I ended up paying about $16-$17 for 3 hours. They split the cost at the register. Each room is equipped with a couple of tambourines and maracas in case you want to get a little crazy in there. Ha. The karaoke machines shoot lights in rhythm with the music...silly but makes the experience more fun. The music selection has English, Korean, Chinese, and Japanese pop songs. Each language is pretty well updated (not sure about the Japanese...none of my group knew the songs). I always get great service here at Hi Tunes and in the many times I've been they've improved even more! They're constantly updating their binders with newly released songs and even made extra binders solely for English songs. The staff are really nice and will sometimes cut out a few extra dollars from the total depending on the situation. They're really flexible about that! Love that they price everything by room rather than number of people because it really brings down the cost and makes things easier to total when it comes to paying. They're not super stingy about going over the time so as long as you don't stay an absurdly long time after the hour it's usually all good. BYOB, great music selection, clean rooms, amazing staff. What more could you ask for? You definitely have to call in though because the rooms always go fast on the weekend! If you're planning a get together on Friday you need to call at least the day before to secure a room if not earlier. read more

Went here over the weekend after being kind of rejected from a nearby other karaoke establishment (we didn't think of getting a reservation :/ ). We had a party of 9 and just wanted to karaoke for fun while we were staying in Austin with a large group of friends. After finding this place on Yelp, we decided to call and ask anyway if they had any rooms available, and luckily they did, and it was the BEST DECISION we ever made. The lady on the phone was super nice, and answered all of my questions. She said they only had a small room left, (usually fits 6 comfortably) but said we were welcome to try to fit 9. It was still good and fine. The price was freaking awesome! They charge by room per hour, which was even better & great for LARGEEEE groups of poeple. By far this is the cleanest Karaoke place I've ever been to, easy to use system which was fast, and THE BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER. They are so accommodating...I might even drive to Austin just to karaoke for a night. Kind of wish they stayed open a little bit later, but its still all good :) I hope they stay that way too! So for people who don't care for the smoking/smokey atmosphere, or dingy karaoke bar atmosphere, who just want a fun clean place to belt out awesome tunes, this is IT.
