They are a bit pushy which makes me think they may not quite be making the sales that they want to make. It's like you walk in to browse and they are on you going "Would you like to buy this bong? You look like you need a bong! You look like a good guy! I'll make a sweet deal just for you if you buy right now!" You end up like, GOD DAMN! Don't get me wrong. The shop is cool and stocked with some great items that are unique and high quality. I still stop by this store every time I'm in the area to check out their stock and get something if I decide to, despite the fact that the constant hard sell is extremely annoying! This place is so overpriced it's a complete rip off I went here to buy two disposable Vape pens and there are each about six dollars more each than any other place in town. Also their selection is terrible and they only have two brands that are not even popular the guy also lied to me and told me he was cash only even though I could see the debit card machine and made me use their ATM machine which cost me an additional $3.50 to use. this place is shady and a rip off..they're also liars I will never go here again. So no...just...so no. This weekend my boyfriend and I went to Berk to look for a nice piece to add to our collection-and something to use with our volc. We thought a bong would be great, so we cruised along telegraph looking at what they had to offer. When I walked into this place the first thing the men did was go "Oh for you, we give you a good price." I felt so pressured I couldn't even look at their selection without someone getting in my personal space. I understand salesmen could be pushy, but this was seriously ridiculous. I was just looking at a piece and one of the men opened the glass case, pulled the piece out and tried to get me to hold it, talking all about it. I know ROOR is a popular brand but honestly they are not impressive to me, especially if you compare them to a local company who has far superior welding skills. I told him I was just looking, and didn't like a few things about the piece and that I wasn't interested-but he kept going on. Saying prices, saying he will give me a deal. Honestly I got pissed....when I tell someone I am not interested I am NOT INTERESTED. He didn't stop so I just walked off. After calming down and looking at a few more shops I went spent a good couple of hundred elsewhere. I hope the people who own this place read this review-because when it comes down to it-in any business, when someone isn't interested you shouldn't keep trying to shove a product down their throat. Also, they have shit on their walls saying these are only for tobacco...when they are called "Hi-Times". Salesmen, but who isn't? Can't hate on the hustle. Yes, they do have "sales" here. And yes, you can probably get them to give it to you for cheaper. It's not my style, but I have already managed to get 2 pipes from here already. The less expensive ones are about $10 - $15 (perhaps when they're on "sale"). This shop is definitely more quiet compared to Big Al's down the street. My friend and I went to Berkeley to get some Salvia. I usually just go to Hi-Times to get this stuff and they usually give me discounts. When we went we bought some 60x level of Salvia and it was $60 and offering no discounts. My friend and I had to split the amount. Then she bought a bong case for $35, also with no discounts. it was final. Then we went a couple doors down to Big Al's to buy her a bong, and then went to Whalen's to buy me one. One of the workers at Whalen's notcied that my friend ws holding a bong bag and asked how much she spent on it and where she bought it from. She told him and he said that you spent too much on it, and he said he would've sold it to her for $20. Then we said we bought Salvia from there too. He said that we spent way too much and bought shitty stuff. Whalen's had more natural and less pricey. They told us to go back and get our money back. So, we did that and didn't know that we couldn't return our items. The guys working there, I assume the owner and another guy, had said that they don't give refunds and they know that we're pursuaded to buy the same items from other stores. We claimed that it wasn't true, because we didn't want to make a bigger deal out of it. But we did want our money back and they weren't giving it to us. There were small signs on the displays that said "No Refunds", but were not very visible. So, we left and went to Big Al's to ask them if they don't do returns too, and they don't but they were nice about it... unlike Hi-Times. Then we went to Whalen's and told them what happened. They said that Hi-Times has done refunds before but have been very selective. Uhh.. wtf?!?! Now we know not to ever go back to Hi-Times. read more

The things they have are very nice, but some of it are overpriced. Pipes they are selling for $50+ you can grab in the smoke shops near UC Davis for under $50. The people working also can really change the experience. Some people are nice and give you bargains, others are really rude. Like one time, a guy gave a nice bargain to of a merchandise totaling $80 for $50, another time a guy would not give us a break and made the experience terrible. read more

Poor customer service. If you buy a glass pipe with any intricate detail, WRAP IT YOURSELF! I was so excited, elated to buy a kick ass pipe for my birthday. I went ALL OUT, and got a $120 pipe, for a DEAL $65. The guy wrapped it and broke off a piece. in three layers of bubble wrap, I didn't know until I got home ONE BLOCK away. I literally was out of the store two minutes. Coming back and asking for a comparable pipe I was told NO because they said I broke it. I was given a less impressive, less expensive pipe that was originally offered at $50, as compensation. According to the guy in the shop I was told I am the one who has to loose the fifteen dollar difference because the glass blower obviously didn't secure it very good, or it got broken in the wrapping but I should be LUCKY because other shops wouldn't even consider replacing. WELL guess what, there are A LOT of other shops and I will happily go else where. In short, go somewhere else. read more

Hi-Times rocks! I have been coming here regularly for well over a year now, and these guys always take care of me. They have an awesome selection of smoking materials, cigarettes, novelties, some room decor, and plenty of whipped-cream-making supplies at the best prices I've seen in the area. The staff is knowledgeable and very friendly, and I always leave feeling like a I got a good deal and a pleasant transaction - unlike my experiences at some of the other places in Berkeley where I usually felt a little ripped off and irritated by the staff's arrogance. The Hi-Times peeps are super cool. Sure, they try to sell you things, but it's a store. They are trying to keep the doors open and the lights on. At least they pay attention to their customers! I went here a few weeks ago with a friend of mine, looking for a small pipe as a gift for my secret santa exchange. When I walked in, they were very nice and respected me when I said that I was just looking. They had a lot of different styles and designs and I could spend all day just looking at each piece. I ended up buying three pipes from a small container under the glass filled with "generic" pipes, clear with some little design in them. Originally, they were $8 each, but I was able to get three for $15 - great on my part! An excellent head shop! I'm not much of a stoner these days, but I do enjoy my whippets now and again. These guys are super friendly and always treat me right when I come through. They'll sell me 50 count boxes of NO2 at $20 a box, which is basically the same price per unit you'd find online only when buying much larger quantities. Also, no sales tax and generally they'll even throw in some free balloons! They're always sure to offer good deals on pipes and bongs (though I have no need for them) but they're never pushy like at some shops. One of the guys in particular is very cheerful and always remembers me and gives me a pound whenever I stroll in there. read more

This review might be a bit outdated, since I haven't been here in years, but there's definitely good reason for that. First off, their stock and supplies aren't the best you'll find in Telegraph, at least from what I was looking for. They're not bad, but you can easily find better in another one of the head shops on the street. Second, and more importantly, don't go in unless you're hellbent on buying something. The staff aren't familiar with people just there to browse, really. When I went in there to look for a blacklight bulb, they practically wouldn't let me leave until I purchased the one they had in stock. The lightbulb itself wasn't too much to write home about. It was pretty much one you could easily find in any store. And I ended up finding a better one in one of the other head shops later on. If left to me, I wouldn't have even bought the first one, if it wasn't for the staff pushing it on me. So yeah, out of all the head shops on Telegraph, this is by far the weakest. Their pipes and accessories are pretty much ones you could find literally anywhere else, and there was nothing really that stood out. Save your money and go to Big Al's Smoke Shop next door. You won't regret it. read more
