Heytea has been a popular place to go ever since its recent opening. I waited for the hype to die down and finally got around to ordering. I used their mobile app, which I must say is a work of art. The attention to detail is incredible and the UI is so aesthetic. The menu items all have pictures available as well as details on each ingredient used to make the drinks. It tells you how long you have to wait for your order to be ready as well as how far you are from the location you ordered from. I ordered the Mango Grapefruit Boom in the 650mL size which is their larger option. It was really good, though it was not as cold as I would've liked. The sago added to the texture of the drink and the mango was not overwhelmingly sweet. Pick-up was quick! My drink was waiting at the front counter and I just had to state the order number before picking up my drink. The inside of the store is clean and sleek. However, the place did have an odd smell to it as I walked in and out of the place. I didn't think too much of it since I was only there for a brief moment. We had been wanting to try Heytea for a month now that they've opened up so many locations throughout the bay. It was a throwback to cal days and my friend and I happened to walk by and saw Heytea so we had to go in. Interior is comfortable, minimalistic and optimized to fit as many people as comfortably as possible. I felt a little silly as I went through the whole perimeter trying to spot the menu and they emphasize the cleanliness of their interior by only putting the wordiness of the menu on the screen in front of the cashier. I got the mango grapefruit boom drink and my friend got the milk tea. We waited about 20 minutes for our drinks to be ready and omygoodness, it was quite the mad dash as there were several people getting their drinks in such tight quarters and there was barely any free space in the shop. I eventually got mine and I love that they have beautifully designed bags to put your drink and straw in. They are generous with the fruits and I loved the creaminess and viscosity of the drinks. Extremely flavorful, lightly sweet and tasted natural and healthy. I am hooked and the hype is certainly well touted and deserved. As for the milk tea though, I like that they had a bundle of piping hot boba on top of the frozen slushee when the rest of the drink was liquid so when you put your straw in, the boba drops and submerges itself. I am still giving this place 4 stars because my drink was really good, but many things that could go wrong went wrong. My spouse, SIL, and I ordered drinks through the app (love the app) and were notified they were ready. However, someone took my spouse's drink. So, the first worker I talked to was apologetic and let me know they'll talk to the manager. 5-10 minutes go by and the same worker came back to let me know it's going to be a bit longer. Another 5-10 minutes pass, and a second person came to talk to me. Telling me the situation (which I already know as I'm the one experiencing it so I'm not sure why they were telling me what I already know). I made it clear that I know, and I'm not looking for more apologies and that I just need the drink made. Finally my spouse's drink was made. I'm not really understanding why I needed to be apologized to so many times and explained that someone accidentally took the drink. Just remake the drink. Personal opinion but did not feel the price lived up to the experience of the drinks I had. I've gone a number of times with friends and had the Crisp Grape Boom, the Coconut Blue Cloud, and the Coconut Mango Boom. I adjusted for sweetness (50%) and ice and felt they were all still a bit too sweet for my liking. I did like the Grape drink the best though, and if I were to come back I'd probably get that one. When it comes to sago drinks, I prefer it a bit softer and felt the sago I had here was way chewier than I was used to. I'll probably go elsewhere for sago mango drinks/dessert. And again, the price tag on the drinks felt less than reasonable. The space is quite tight, and when the line is out the door I have to consider going elsewhere. I looked into the economics comparing average monthly salary in the Bay Area and Beijing. In the Bay the average per month is $4,121 while in Beijing it's 14,873 RMB..so you tell me. My point being is $8 is not cheap. My honest review is - the cheese foam is probably one of the better ones I've tried - although don't compare this with a sea salt creama because that's different. The iced matcha itself was not bad but I've had and prefer a stronger matcha taste. Technology? Probably the coolest I've seen at a boba shop. You order and a QR code prints. The ingredients then get dispensed into a cup where the person then takes it and shakes it make it almost fool-proof. Would I go back? Yes. I want to try heytea labs and some other drinks so yes. Worst location I've been to in the Bay Area. A lot of things went wrong during my visit to this location: *We ordered two drinks - 1 grapefruit boom and 1 mango coconut boom. HEYTEA is located in downtown Berkeley. It is a busy area, so parking is hit or miss - most is metered street parking. I ordered online and within 10 minutes, my drink was ready. With their all gray exterior and their modern yet simple logo, it definitely pops out, but looks a bit like a bit strange for a boba shop with the windows that looks boarded up and painted over or something. Interior is a bit different from how it looks from the exterior - more elegant and modern, but a bit too narrow, which makes bench seating right in front of the register a bit claustrophobic. I have been to multiple of their other Bay Area locations and even one in China. Their Bay Area locations all vary, as their drinks are not at all consistent - their China location was the most consistent with their drinks tasting the best. I tried their Jasmine Latte with light tea and more sugar with boba. I did like that the tea strength could be adjusted between their default (which was the recommended setting), light, or strong tea strengths. I did enjoy the drink with light tea strength, so I could enjoy the creaminess more, which was already pretty light (their default milk). I got less ice, which was recommended, but not sure what is the difference between their less ice and light ice options. Even after choosing the more sugar option, the drink was not at all sweet, which was a bummer - I felt like the sweetness was from the brown sugar boba. The boba was bit on the softer side - a bit melty and the portion was definitely not generous at all - barely any boba in the drink. About $7.50 for a small cup. read more

Cal students rejoice! From a humble beginning in China to world renowned boba shop, HeyTea is one of the most famous boba brands. It's been in NY and LA and now it's finally here! The first two Bay locations are San Jose and Daly City. Sunnyvale followed and now Berkeley! Cupertino, Milpitas and others are also coming. The focus is on providing an elevated tea experience with signature premium teas and fresh fruits. HeyTea popularized cheese tea which is now a staple at many bubble tea stores. HeyTea is a must visit for any bubble tea enjoyer. Yes, the lines are long. Yes, the prices can be high. But what you get in return is deliciousness in a cup. If you have patience, maybe wait a few weeks for things to settle. Maybe I'm going crazy or perhaps I'm romanticizing a bit, but I do feel as the quality is not the same as it was years ago. Having tried HeyTea on multiple continents (Asia, Australia, etc.) over the years, either the magic has slightly worn off or perhaps it was inevitable that as they grew, some things would slip through the cracks. That being said, the quality is still top notch but it doesn't seem as unmatched as before when they were alone at the top. The Berkeley location is super tiny with very limited seating but it's still lovely, clean, and modern. Parking downtown can be a challenge. At least the staff is efficient and friendly. This just opened, so my spouse wanted to check this place out. We got a Supreme Bobo Milk Tea in my reusable tumbler. I saw on their sign that they give a 30-cent discount if you BYO (Bring Your Own) container, but the discount didn't show up when I paid. When my spouse asked them about it, they looked at the sign (so it was clear they didn't know about it), and offered us the discount in coins (since I had already finished the transaction), which was a reasonable resolution. When I got the drink, I was disappointed that they gave the cheese cream to us in a separate small plastic container instead of pouring it directly into my tumbler. I ended up pouring the cream myself, though I couldn't get all of it without spilling, so I had to throw the rest away in the landfill bin. I'm curious about how they normally put the cream in drinks prepared in single-use cups. After the first sip, I strongly disliked how mushy the boba was. Upon sipping more of the drink, I did like the flavor, which was decently sweet and more milky than tea-y (kind of like a sweet latte). The sweetness percent we chose was 30%, which was pretty sweet, so I'm glad we didn't get a higher percentage. If I come back, I would get just the drink without the boba and try a different tumbler (see Eco Notes below). ECO NOTES If you bring your own (BYO) clean reusable tumbler, they will accept it. I greeted him and asked a question about an add on and he seemed confused at their own menu. Requested light ice but if half the container was ice. The drink was made to order and the little we got tasted good (mild, not sweet, matcha cream was nice) however it's incredibly pricey for what you get. Though I wouldn't necessarily call myself The Biggest Boba Fan, the drinks at HeyTea are so delicious, I might consider myself a new boba believer :) HeyTea is recognized for its premium fruit teas, and unbeknownst to me until several of my friends who call China home told me, is credited for popularizing cheese foam. In my opinion, what really sets HeyTea apart from their many boba competitors in Berkeley is their (1) excellent quality teas and fruits, and (2) highly customizable drink options, ultimately offering customers an elevated customized boba experience. Drinks: - Reasonably priced compared to competitors in the area. Of course, everything in the Bay Area is expensive, but I think HeyTea is fair, considering they don't charge for certain modifications (e.g. extra match powder, sub sugar-free sweetener, etc.) vs. Teaspoon two blocks away which charges at least ~$0.50-$1+ more for analogous drinks - Love the variety of options! Your choice of Matcha, Fruit Teas, Milk Teas, Leaf Teas. They have unique twists on classics, like Coco Water Matcha, Matcha and Jasmine, and Grape/Mulberry/Bayberry fruit teas - Don't seem to skimp on the fruit. I ordered a Mulberry Strawberry Boom and every sip had pulverized Mulberries. - Love that they even offer sugar-free sweetener subs, which I've never seen another boba place have Ordering: - They do offer in-app ordering, but because the store gets so busy with in-person orders, it's common for in-app-order-ahead to be paused so they can prioritize in-person orders - Lots of customizability in the app Service: - Employees are friendly! I appreciate that the checkout staff repeated my order back to me to make sure they got everything correct - Lines and wait times are definitely getting shorter compared to opening week. I waited approx. 10 minutes for my drink which was reasonable considering there were about 5 people ahead of me in line Interior: - Very narrow storefront with limited seating - Can get crowded and loud when there is a line of people waiting to order - Beautiful interior; very clean and modern I was initially very skeptical of HeyTea and couldn't believe why anybody would wait in line in the rain for hours, as many people did during its opening week, but now I understand the hype! read more
