FYI....The plan was to fly in to KACV (Arcata/Eureka) airport and pick up a car. Hertz is not located at the airport, but downtown Eureka. This was fine, because the website says they will pick you up. Just found out they charge $40 each way, which was more than half the cost of renting the car. Not sure what we're doing here guys but transportation to/from the airport is generally, if not always, free. read more

When we went to the place to pick up the reserved car, they wouldn't accept the agreement and we left the place without a car and having to dispute the charges to get my money back on my credit card because it was approved. If we could give zero stars we would!! Our Tesla broke down in Eureka. Not even a stop that would have been on our trip! We called and the place had just closed. An amazing employee drive over to see if he could help us. The car was beyond being helped. We showed up at Hertz the following morning and explained our situation. The girl manager at Hertz was so rude and so unhelpful we will never rent from Hertz again. The guy in their even said he wished he could help us more but was unable because of her. We rented a Tesla and they replaced it with a car half the size and dirty and didn't refund us any money or even offer to make up for all the inconveniences that having a broken down car cause for our trip and our family. With the airport closed during the time Cal Poly Humboldt students were moving in, getting back to L.A. was stressful. Noa was patient and the rental was great! I don't remember the young woman's name but she was also amazing. Gave me a phone charger from their lost and found. I am so glad I rented from them. These people are incredibly dishonest. Do not trust them. I made the mistake of driving off with their car only half full of gas, and the driver who picked me up admitted that because of the power outage due to the earthquake, they hadn't been able to fill up the cars. Well, when I returned the car, they lied and said it had been full. It was not. I had thought about taking a photo of the gas tank meter, but with the holidays I got busy and forgot. They got me to pay to fill up their rental car. I hope they enjoy the free gas out of my pocket. I should have known that a company that is known for putting their customers at risk by not taking their cars in for recalls would also screw us over individually. The manager actually laughed at me. I guess they enjoy causing people anguish. I will never go to Hertz again, and you won't either if you don't want to get ripped off. read more

This place is horrible!! I was having some work done to my car and Hertz was suggested to me for a rental...I had always in the past gone with Enterprise, but was willing to give Hertz a try. They DID have a car waiting for me at the auto shop, nice new car..but no instructions or owners manual to go by..when I called to confirm receipt of the car, the representative just wanted my credit card information, never offered to do a virtual walk thru or walk around concerning the car. A single sheet of paper was left in the car indicating a small dent near the front bumper...I found 3 other dings on the car and immediately reported them prior to driving the car off the lot. I had only anticipated having the rental for 4 days, but the auto shop needed my car longer so when I called Hertz to extend my rental time, the representative on the phone was impatient and rude, didn't want to be bothered with me. Stated she had customers waiting and wouldn't answer any of my questions. At this same time, multiple pending transactions from Hertz were being posted on my credit card almost every day which made me concerned. I called back and spoke to a manager who assured me she would handle everything. The manager never called me back. I dropped the rental back at the auto shop after 7 days and Hertz was called informing them the car was there. After 5-6 days, we still hadn't heard anything from Hertz, but the pending transactions kept appearing on my credit card...so I called AGAIN..this was my 4th call to them to get this rectified only to find out they never closed out my contract!! They even asked me if I still had the car!!! I called the auto body shop and the rental was still there, they had never picked it up!! FINALLY after 2 weeks...the contract was closed, but I still had to call them again to get a final charge and receipt! Horrible customer service..will never go back, should have stuck with Enterprise!!! read more

My husband and I rented a car from this location. When the car was returned, my wallet must have fallen out and remained in the car. We were traveling the coast in an RV and I didn't notice that my wallet was missing until we returned home the following week. I called Hertz to see if my wallet had been found. Initially I was told that nothing had been turned in. After much discussion the representative finally agreed to call the current renter to ask them to check the car. I received a call back and was told that it was actually in their safe. My business cards, with my phone number, were in the wallet. The manager told me they called my husband's number and left a message, though his phone showed no missed calls or messages from them. I offered my credit card number to pay to have the wallet returned. I was told that I would need to send a self-addressed, prepaid box in order for them to return the item. I asked if I could email a prepaid label for them to use as this would be faster. I was again told that I had to send the packaging supplies to them. The manager and representative were rude and unwilling to work with me at all. I've had items left at hotels in the past, and have never had someone so unwilling to help in getting items back. When I asked the manager what she would want to happen if her wallet with credit cards and ID were left, her response was, "If this was my wallet, it wouldn't have taken me a week to notice it was missing.". This place SUCKS. My parents rented a car from the Eureka Location. As soon as they got ready to leave their house they noticed the tags were expired and had to drive back to the facility to get that corrected before they could even leave. The car broke down on the side of the road in Oregon. After being on hold for over 1.5 hours with the Emergency Road Side services, they were informed that a tow truck driver was coming for the car but they would have to find their own way to the closest town. They ended up getting to Klamath Falls (45 minutes south of where they broke down). I just phoned the Eureka office to try to get something for my parents so they can make it home and the lady who answered the phone was more concerned with the other customers she had on hold then my parents situation. She informed me that I could call the Medford Hertz location and see if I could figure something out. I don't understand why we have to do all the foot work when my parents are paying for this car that they no longer have. She told me that she didn't know what to do and that she needs to try to figure out what they can do BUT that would be after she dealt with the people onsite. Phone calls started at 8:00 AM and it is now 10:15 and we still have no answers. I will keep you all posted with another review after the situation is handled. BUT i WOULD NEVER RENT FROM THIS PLACE. I want to first start off by recognizing that many elements of my family's poor experience were out of the control of both the Hertz's I dealt with. My main grievance is what Hertz expects me to pay for it. Hertz Eureka had given us a car with poor A/C airflow that we could not notice until we needed it in warmer weather (Eureka was in the 60s and we were headed to Sacramento in the higher 90s). This was about 3pm, 1.5 hours into our trip. I tried to reach out to Hertz via the text chat and by calling Hertz Eureka, but we were in a poor reception area in the mountains, so opportunities were limited. The text chat recommended bringing my car in for an exchange at Hertz Ukiah, and when I did manage to get a hold of Jessica at Hertz Eureka (after their closing, which I am grateful for), she was able to reach out to Hertz Ukiah for me to give the unfortunate news that they only had one car left that was already reserved. All other Hertzes would be closed by the time we would get there. Jessica recommended I still go to Hertz Ukiah just in case, but if the situation didn't change, our car would be forced to spend at least 3 more hours in 90 degree heat with weak A/C to exchange at Hertz by the Sac airport. Now, my wife and I might get cranky in that heat but could probably tolerate it if there were no options. But we also had our two dogs in the car who would be at risk of heat stroke. Jessica at Hertz Eureka offered me $25 off my bill for our trouble which I thought was laughable, considering we had just spent 2 out of the 4 hours of our rental experience in discomfort and were looking at 3 upcoming hours of much worse. When we made it to Hertz Ukiah, the situation hadn't changed and the staff there understandably could not provide much help. Desperate, I called the Enterprise in Ukiah and explained the situation. Despite their website saying there were no cars available and the fact that it was right before their closing time (5PM), the staff at Enterprise went above and beyond in honoring the details of my reservation with Hertz and even for a lower price. After picking up their car, I didn't want to deal with filling up the gas for our Hertz rental. We were exhausted by Hertz's lack of meaningful help. We dropped off at Hertz Ukiah after their closing, leaving the key in the Dropbox and made it to Sacramento comfortable and grateful for Enterprise's help. Much to my surprise, my bill came in from Hertz this morning with a total higher than my quote from Enterprise. For 5 hours in Hertz's defective car vs 48 hours. I believe I deserve to be reached out to by Hertz so that we may come to a mutual agreement on what is fairly owed. (P.S.) I found out after we got the Enterprise rental that the Hertz car's A/C is affected by the console software. Without a device connected, the A/C seems to work fine, but a connection (Bluetooth or wired) immediately reduces the airflow. You can go back and forth and notice effects right away. This was not suggested by any of the 3 Hertz staff I communicated with, and this was too late as I already had the Enterprise car. read more

This Hertz location is getting a "bad rap" which hurts their "rep" which (IMHO) they simply do not deserve. I have rented cars and SUVs more times than I can recall and my overall experience is always positive. I truly believe Hertz in Eureka is doing the best job they possibly can (under extraordinarily difficult circumstances), especially in these challenging times of COVID-19 and the craziest presidential election in the history of the US. All of these employees care about their customers and they care about each other. I have always been treated respectfully with professionalism and that personable feel. Starting from the rental counter through transporting to and from customers' locations to the efforts they put into cleanliness and preparation - HERTZ EUREKA RULES! Nobody can tarnish this establishment's reputation or say a bad thing about this place. Keep on rolling and putting me in the driver seat of your exceptional, fleet. I am so very grateful for how you've helped and treated me fairly me over these years. I apologize for how long it has taken me to award y'all with this attaboy. I can't say anything good about this place. I rented a car in Chicago--- to drive back to Arcata. The office there was swamped, as people really wanted to get out of town after a year of Covid. The staff was helpful but rushed, never discussing the options re: returning with a full tank, for example. But that was posted. More importantly they never said a word about what condition the car had to be returned in. They took photos of the exterior only. I'm sure it was in the fine print, but essentially they gave me the keys& waved goodby. I just returned the car, on time, to this Eureka office, 2400 miles later. The woman went to check it, said it was dirty and had a stain on the seat (we traveled with a 2yearold), which it did, but a superficial one. She said I could try to clean it myself, or pay $100 for them to clean it. I protested, since no one had specified it has to be spotless. But finally I said OK. She just called me back, at 5pm. said her supervisor said it needed to be detailed. $250!! I asked to speak to the super, but she'd "gone home". I said I didn't agree with the charge. The woman said "Call Customer Service" to protest, "have a nice day" and hung up. This is extortion!! They have my card and charged it without my permission. BE VERY CAREFULL.. I was told I was being charged a $50. deposit that would be returned when the car was returned. The woman at the counter have me a nasty look and told me my card had been rejected. After calling my bank..I discovered Hertz tried to charge me $563.60!! My bank saved the day(Umpqua bank) To make matters worse..they were not happy I insisted that they note all scratches and dents Before I left the lot. I've been charged in the padt, so I was aware. Regarding the airport location: If I could rate this location less than 1 star, I would. The guy that is always there, Carl, is a terrible representation of this company. Not only does he have a bad disposition and look like a slob but he's rude to customers, spews incorrect information, and lacks in customer service skills. His phone etiquette is terrible, he does the minimal work required by his position, and has told several people that he's been with Hertz so long, they'll never get rid of him because he has 'pull'. This is truly one employee who should be fired or seriously re-trained. I will never, ever rent from this Hertz location again and I have passed along my negative experience to all my friends and co-workers. read more

STAY AWAY if you care about your safety! Here is our recent story: We were given a mid-sized Chevy Cruze which died on us after only several days out of a 10 day trip to Oregon. While waiting forever for the AAA guy for a jump, we checked the Internet and learned that the 2013 Cruze is well-known for engine trouble and for not starting. So why did Herz give us this lemon?? Then, the Herz telephone customer service was virtually useless. We needed to get a new car (we didn't trust that this one would last). The agent promised that one would be held for us at the tiny, inconveniently located North Bend Airport. When we finally reached there ,the Herz agent was rude and flippant and said he probably did not have a car for us- that he had not heard from customer service about our need! We were so upset and desperate. Then he came up with a car- but a tiny one. We had no choice but to take this one. When he returned it one week later in Portland they only gave us a $50 credit even though we had been downgraded to this junky small car through no fault of our own. BTW, the 2013 Chevy Cruise was also recalled in 2014 for faulty dangerous airbags made by Takata! Herz- YOU SUCK! You provide dangerous cars!! read more

I called hertz ahead to reserve a car and when I arrived and then filled out all the paperwork it was at that time they told me the price of the rental car no it was not a car that cost a million dollars why they did not tell me when I called ahead of time or before I filled out the paperwork about the cost of the rental. There are really only two car rental sources at the Eureka-Arcata airport. I travel there 4-5 times a year for work and have rented from both. However, I will avoid the Hertz franchise from now on. Three times now Hertz has rental me a vehicle with a partially full gas tank. This time, I got a car with only 1/4 tank of gas. Since I had to drive a couple of hours away through the mountains, where there are very few stations, the first thing I had to do after leaving the airport was to fill the tank. But the more annoying thing is that I had to fill the tank again before driving back and ended up returning the car with 1/2 tank left. I calculated that I had basically given the franchise owner $12 of free gas. However if I had returned the car with less than 1/4 tank, they would have charged $10 a gallon for the difference. Since it's nearly impossible to accurately estimate how much gas to add to refill a partial tank, they always win. Either they get the free gas if you overfill or they get to charge the punitively high rate if you don't add enough. The perfect system for ripping off customers. If it had happened once or twice, I would think it was a fluke but three times seems more like a strategy to me. read more

One of the most painful rental car experiences we have ever had. We had a car reserved for 8:00 am. Showed up shortly after 9:00 and they had given our car away. We had to wait another 20 minutes for them to find one OR pay the extra fee for an upgrade even though they were the ones who weren't aware of the term 'reserved.' We had a car reserved for a reason. It was a short trip to this area and time was very important to us. Once the car was ready it was an excruciatingly long process to go over the car with our customer service agent. Very disappointed with our experience and would urge others to rent cars elsewhere. read more

As a local in Eureka there's no better place to rent a car then this Hertz. The cars are great. They are clean, new & reliable. The staff is excellent. I've never had a bad experience at this location over the past 4 years. I'd like to give positive feedback for Hertz representative, Sedric. Sedric provides exceptional customer service. He is attentive, warm, funny and has a positive and upbeat attitude. He is a top notch professional and is very knowledgeable. I really appreciate the fact that he goes out of his way to make sure each person that walks through the door is greeted and attended to with a big welcome. Quick service, clean car, $44 bucks for 24 hrs, not bad. Still haven't got the deposit back from them though, but it's been less than 24 hrs. They said minimum credit score was 661 to rent a car, I know mine is closer to 600 but it still went through so if you're in a similar spot I'd try here first. read more

I had a collision and filed a claim with AAA. The next day I get a call from Hertz and they tell me if I need a vehicle they will be expecting me. The body shop my car was at dropped me at Hertz and after a short wait I was helped. I wish I knew the name of the guy that helped me! He was wonderful. I was able to get a rental within a half hour and had it for about 2 weeks. No issues at all. When my car was ready, I was able to leave the rental at the body shop for Hertz to pick up. I was a Hertz Gold member, and have rented from Hertz for over 15 years. But after the experience my daughter had with Hertz, I think I'll be going elsewhere from now on. She had to rent a car recently and Triple A was paying the bill. She was asked at the desk about additional insurance and she turned it down. However, the clerk snuck it through anyway and now Hertz is trying to collect over $2000 for insurance coverage that was never authorized. I have noted that Hertz, quite often, will have you initial real quick, claiming one thing when it turns out to be another. From now on, I think I'll walk across the street to Enterprise. Hertz, you may or may not get the fraudulent $2000 from my daughter, but you've lost a lot more than that in money from lost car rentals from me and all my friends. And your reputation is now in the dumpster. You've lost a very loyal customer. Sorry, Jessica. read more

Hertz had a good rate online so we rented a car from Friday to Sunday. The only issue was that I was unaware that on top of the fees and insurance the deposit was an additional $200 and all of the fees have to be on the same card plus if you use a debit card you still pay the deposit but they also run a credit check for it. They don't take cash either for the deposit. The hours of operations was a bummer because they are only opened till noon on Saturday and are closed on Sunday which I had reserved the car till Sunday and if I wanted to keep the car for Sunday I would have to pay for Monday as well. Now Sedric was great he helped out and would be the reason for me renting a car from them again. He was awesome. If you go to Hertz in Eureka give Sedric a huge shout out for his awesomeness! read more

I have to say that never before have I had such problems with a rent-a-car place. There was a miscommunication with staff and payments received, as I paid cash and the hold (supposed hold on my credit card would be taken off.) I paid cash and went home thinking everything was good, except for the extra charge for cleaning, mind you I cleaned before the car was picked up, spending 8$ at a car was and vaccuming. Long behold 3 days later my credit card was charged again, so I was charged twice. I informed the employee of what happened and she proceeded to tell me " that could never happen a customer getting charged twice," that there was a problem with the bank. I went to the bank and the manager at bank had to call Hertz and speak with them, as my word was not credible. The bank manager reassured Hertz that I had indeed been charged twice. I then went back to Hertz, only to find out that nothing could be done that day, and since it was Thursday and the weekend was around the corner they really couldn't help me. The Hertz employee states, " I feel bad" well I do too. Overhearing another employee joking with a another client on a phone about taking his credit card number shopping. I was then really angry, because my money had been taken and this employee has the nerve to joke about STEALING money from another customer. This situation had scam written all over it. This place should be shut down. I did call coporate and fax all my information to them, all reciepts and documents regarding being billed twice for a week rental. I hope this matter get resolved soon. UPDATE: the money was put back into my account. I have rented since then with little issue until today. Tried to do the online pay in advance the other day. My card is charged and reservation in place. I called to only ask to pick up car earlier in the day. I was given the run around yet again, told to call corporate. Called the 800 number to be told I HAVE to cancel my reservation because I used a debit card. Now a cancellation fee of 50$. Forced to cancel by the way. When picking up my car there was only one person working the counter. We were in line for 45+ minutes. We had ordered a SUV and when we finally got to our car it was not even cleaned. We rented a bigger car for our part of five to comfortably travel, but in our car there was no way more than two people could fit. We even had trouble with our luggage fitting in the back. read more

I wish I could remember the woman's name but she was amazing. I've had a very stressful week. I got into a wreck with my daughters, my youngest only being a month old. Hertz set me right up with a vehicle. They called the next day to check and make sure the car was working out for us. When I got a new vehicle hertz picked up the car. I forgot to fill the tank. They were nice enough to let me come up there to fill it but I didn't have the time due to my baby being very sick and having a doctors appointment set so the woman over the phone did not over charge me for the gas. The were very understanding of the situation. I had a very pleasant experience with them. read more
