The village is a collection of buildings relocated from other areas, and they are dedicated to types of craftsmanship. There are SO many areas in the buildings to explore! They have woodworking, ceramics, glassworks, printing, signage, weaving, blacksmithing, and other crafts. The crew even built a replica of the hearse that carried Lincoln's coffin for the memorial trip from DC to Springfield, 150 years later. They also hand-crafted a redwood table for President Clinton's Presidential Library. Because the buildings are working sites, visitors must be careful as they walk through each area. Thankfully, all the walkways are of sturdy recent construction--even the catwalk on the second floor of the main building. Tours are led by knowledgeable guides, and visitors may have the opportunity to see craftsmen at work; on our visit, there was a gentleman working on a sign for a local ballpark. He stopped what he was doing and talked through the process of converting an artist's sketch to a finished, billboard-sized sign. It was fascinating to see! The grounds are lovely and have views of Humboldt Bay from the top of the rise. There are gardens planted in various sites around the village, and it is very pretty in the spring. For a unique experience of immersion into craftworks, I definitely recommend a visit to The Blue Ox!

Quality/Quantity - The first lady working the center is AMAZING. She was the one whose husband is in the Coast Guard. So sorry, I forgot her name. She is so positive and helpful. And when we stopped by on accident for the grand opening event, she was so welcoming again! The entertainment, food, and drinks were all so good. Met a few locals and business owners. And no food was wasted, as I saw the "public" come and finish it all off. The food was so good, especially the tri tip. Too bad I am trying to eat healthier. Oh, and no drinks were wasted, I helped finish all that off, LOL. Atmosphere - Clean welcoming space. Open 7 days a week from 10am to 5pm. Service - 6 stars!! And on both visits. Price - Free, thank you. Owner Comments - Congrats again on your grand opening.

We've got an electric tricycle for one and a lighter bike for the other. *We want to get back earlier to make it to our next destination. No problem! We can turn around and return whenever you want. North 101 Rest Stop in Trinidad…read more We were passing through the seaside city of Trinidad in Humboldt County. From Eureka we were on our way to Crescent City. The rest stop is in a woodsy redwood forest area on the Redwood Highway. Nice and clean facilities with amenities including drinking water. It almost looks like a camping ground. I'm not sure if you can camp here but it would be cool if you can. They have a picnic area onsite with chairs, picnic tables and bear proof trash bins. Eight hour parking allowed. The rest stop is on the side of U.S. 101 Northbound... beautiful and quiet spot for a rest area. I wanted to explore a little bit more and follow the paved trail but we had a schedule to keep at the Battery Point Lighthouse in Crescent City which is only accessible at low tide. The rest stop is located 0.9 miles South of Patricks Point, CA on US Route 101 with Northbound access. Review #2522
