Computers down, had to fill out forms manually. Took forever. Had to upgrade. They only hold the reservation for a hour. So I think the fuel efficiency is basically cut in half at $75 extra a day, and probably an extra $500 in gas for my trip. Took forever to get my rental. Arrived, no car, was told they would have one by 1pm, but I booked for early to use it for the day, so 1 pm doesn't work. If you aren't able to GUARANTEE a car for the time it is booked for, DON'T BOOK IT!!!! Evidently they did call yesterday at almost 7pm but my phone was on do not disturb because I was out for the evening. I was busy packing and hauling luggage down 3 flights of stairs from my airbnb. I love the convenience of the location on Clark and Diversey. Easy to get in and out and they always give me a great car to use. Everyone is very friendly and accommodating. I also appreciate when they give me an extra ticket to get out as even though I live 3 blocks from the location I cannot always find parking. So if need be I park in the lot and take the car back out. I also like that it's very reasonable to rent a car for one day to run errands! read more

Overall, 10/10. Had a great experience with pick up and drop off for my 4 day road trip! Pick-up was super easy, I was in and out in under 45 minutes (had to wait for another customer to finish up). The man at the desk who helped me with pickup was also very kind. I'm guessing he could probably tell I was hesitant with some of the add-ons (this was a spontaneous road trip, I hadn't saved for, and wasn't sure if I even needed them to begin with). He helped me figure out what was reasonable/realistic for my type of trip, without adding any crazy salesmen talk/pressure. Which was greatly appreciated! The car was a HUGE surprise! I wasn't really sure what I was expecting, but it certainly wasn't as nice as this. I opted for the "midsized car/Mazda 3, and walked out with a VW Jetta. I swear, the inside/outside of the car looked like it had never been driven. It was incredibly clean. Kudos to the man who brought the car up for me, as well. He guided me through the parking at the ramp, and that put the rest of my worries at ease. Drop off was super simple! Just dropped off my keys and was on my way. Just avoid this place. Literal trash. No experience. No organization. No planning ahead. Arrived with my partner to pick up a car with 2 car seats for our kids in the reservation (made 2 months in advance and paid for) they didn't have the car seats and failed to let us know ahead of time. We had to pick the car seats from 2 DIFFERENT HERTZ locations. They were passive and un caring and dressed like trash. Did not apologize and to top it all off the car had no gas in it. I was in an accident on Nov 11. I was originally set up with Enterprise rental car. The place was sold out of cars to rent. But very happy that they were as they sent me to Hertz at this branch since it was the only location that closes at 6pm. When I arrived to the branch Alex was the employee who greeted me, kind friendly and helpful. He was able to set me up into one of the last vehicles they had available which was a small truck. As I was on the phone with my insurance Statefarm, he helped me set the right expectations on the rental price since it was a bigger vehicle it was $35 a day and Statefarm had only approved $25 a day, due to the situation and he explained to the Statefarm agent they agree and I was able to leave with a vehicle. I am very grateful for the help he provided. Throughout the process of my vehicle being fixed, I was to call the branch and update them on the extended days, Robert was very kind on the phone, as busy as this branch is took the time to review in the computer and confirmed the days to extend, always with a positive attitude and courteous. Today my rental came to the end, and I must say I arrived 3 minutes before closing and Robert greeted me happy not bothered because it closing time, K another employee checked on the car to make sure it was back the way I received the vehicle. Dennis was also very helpful with the process as he walked me down to get out of the branch. And I must Say the Branch Manager Xiala was Amazing. Her spirit was very genuine and trust me I can tell those things, as I asked them to book a ride at my insurance discretion. She was able to obtain approval and book a Lyft ride so I can get home. All of these amazing employees have my my experience and amazing one, and made the business name Hertz very proud. To whom ever is reading this very long review, need to recognize the amazing customer service they provided and trust me I will be passing out the word to bring business to this branch. A business and employees can only be as great as the person running it. Xiala they are very lucky to have you running this business and treating the employees the way they do, is why the employees are so happy to help customers as they do, friendly, helpful, kind and courteous. People clients like me, are going through a rough time, with an accident or renting to go visit family etc. And kindness goes a long way as some people don't know peoples situations are sensitive. Man, I'm a Hertz Gold Member and I use them every time I need a car - which is often! First time trying this specific location though. I booked a car February 28th, they called me April 6th (less than 24 hrs to pickup time) and left a voicemail saying they have to prioritize customers who booked A YEAR in advance for the eclipse dates - and that my booking will be cancelled because they have no car for me. This ruined my entire weekend of plans and I can't see the total eclipse on the 8th as planned. I can't see my mom, or my childhood best friend as we had planned for months. No other car rentals available, Amtrak sold out, I don't have a car so simply SOL. Hertz did not mention a refund or any type of credit towards a future car either. This is insane and makes me never want to use Hertz again read more

Reserved Tesla. When arriving it was not available, despite it saying the car is guaranteed and confirmed. I was then told it was based on availability and this could be found in fine print. This fine print is not in any email confirmation or app. I was told the disclosure is in the website, but they "didn't have access to said website" to show the disclosure. The app also explicitly indicated and promoted that I could go straight to the car. This is not possible at this location logistically and the car was not there to complete this with. This is bait and switch, non disclosure, and misleading customers. This is something that should be directed to the states office because this is shady business practice. read more

Avoid this location, and avoid Hertz completely. Apparently this is a Top Down problem from Hertz as a whole, and this location seems to have more problems than anyone needs to deal with. They do not have any 24 hour call lines - they expect you to go to their Facebook page and message them after hours, but even then, none of the agents seem to communicate with any other agent. When they do, it's days later, which only racks up charges. They do not communicate clearly with customers in the RARE occassion that you'd actually get a live human voice on the phone and they still continue to charge. Hertz has to know about these reviews of this location, but there doesn't seem to be any action taken to rectify it. My story is not much different than what I see in these reviews "no customer service" "overcharging" "claiming cars were stolen and charging me for it" "being charged extra days" "no place to store keys" "no 24 hour hotline" "no one answers phone" on and on and on. I've done enough research to see that Hertz as a whole company seems not to condem such actions, its as if it is the standard operating procedure. Look up Hertz problems and you'll see what I mean by this being a top-down issue. Avoid this location and avoid Hertz completely. A reply to this will probably state something like "I'm sorry to hear..." but that's all fodder, no one there listens, no one replies in a reasonable time and no one offers actual helpful service. read more

When I arrived to pick up my car, I received the only car left, which was an electric car which was not only not charged but had so little charge that it was not readily chargeable. I was not able to reach my intended destination on time. I spent about 3 hours working to get the car charged because of the condition in which I received it. According to my rental agreement, I was supposed to return my rental car to a location that was along the Chicago Marathon route at a time while the marathon was in progress. When I called to find out what alternative arrangement to make, I spent nearly an hour on hold without getting an answer. When I spoke to a regional manager, she said that my experience didn't meet their own expectations for service, but thought I should be grateful that they didn't charge me for the extra day of rental time incurred because of the Marathon. I want to add that the individuals and manager working at this location were polite, caring, professional, and considerate, but Hertz's management and its atrocious customer service failed me badly, and didn't empower its local staff to address the shortcomings of my experience. read more

That morning, one hour before my pickup time, I get a voicemail from the branch that they don't have a car for me .. and that's it. No attempt to find me a car at another location, or to transfer the reservation at the same rate. Nothing. Just "too bad, get lost" (and I'm a President's Circle member, so if they'll do this to me, they'll certainly do it to any customer). Absolutely unacceptable. Do what you can to avoid this location. I rented a car for one day and returned it before the timeslot the following day. A couple days later I get emailed a receipt from Hertz saying I've been charged for keeping the car two extra days. I called Hertz customer service (as this location doesn't answer their phone. I tried to call 5x) and they said the front desk worker "forgot" to check my car back in. They're refunding my money, but imagine if I hadn't checked, I would've been out $200 for their mistake. I've rented from this location at least a dozen or so times, and most times the transactions go smoothly. I fill everything out online, check-in online, boom...pick up the car, and we're off. On the way back, I fill up the tank at a station a few blocks from the Century Mall and return the car with the keys in the drop box. A couple days later I receive a receipts of charges. This is where renters need to be very careful. TWICE IN ONE YEAR, this location has charged me a fuel fee for not filling up the tank to the level it was taken out at. TWICE IN ONE YEAR, I've called, spoken with someone who's admitted that the person checking the car in was in error because they didn't do so accurately. According to an employee, this location does not have a porter who scans returns; check-ins are done by a cleaning person. TWICE IN ONE YEAR, there was nothing the staff at the local level can do because--and here's the ironic twist--once they put through charges, credits can only be authorized by the corporate office, and they are very reluctant to do so. Hertz's way of solving disputes at the local level is to simply send out credits for your next rental. Um...no. I want you to credit my charge card. Thank goodness I use my American Express card which is known to be good about taking care of disputes. read more

The service at this location, and a complete lack of response from Hertz in general, have made them part of the worst rental experience I've ever had (I rent frequently). The employee working behind the counter handed me a packet and told me to grab the car without further explanation. Upon leaving, the voucher I was given to leave the parking garage registered an additional $33 out-of-pocket fee. I tried calling, but nobody would answer the phone (after multiple attempts). Additionally, the car was filthy between the driver's seat and the console, with at least a week's worth of food waste stuffed in. I was stuck paying the fee temporarily, in order to leave a busy parking garage in the middle of the city, and found that upon return of the car, with proof of receipt and all, the same employee told me they would 'only reimburse me with a $25 rental certificate'. I tried calling any type of customer service line, and have sent multiple emails: both lines of communication, to this day, remain unanswered. Additionally, I received my 'receipt' without any $25 certificate. While once a Gold Member, Hertz can rest assured I will not be renting from them again due to their lack of customer service. read more

Cars are always dirty, the wait times are horrible, and the most frustrating part of my experience today is that they tried to give me a damaged car. The bumper was literally cracked and breaking off. I took a picture and showed them... instead of apologizing, the try to convince me it was dirt. I went back out to take another picture only to be greeted by an employee that obviously had not even checked the car the first time to say it was just dirt. Upon actually looking at the car, he was able to see the large crack. More than 30 minutes after arriving, I left without a car. I've been coming here for a while and I rent often, but the convenience of location is not worth the unprofessionalism that I experienced today. Used to be a great location, but not sure what happened. Showed up 15 minutes before they opened and the employees slowly made their way downstairs 15 minutes after they were supposed to be open. My car wasn't where it was supposed to be, so I had to wait another 5 minutes for someone to show up and drive me around the garage to find the car. I ended up missing my appointment afterward because of this. Though I should consider myself lucky this time. The last few times I've been here they actually haven't had cars for myself or others, despite making reservations well in advance and having Presidents Circle status. Avoid. read more

The driver-side front tire of the car that I rented from this place (a KIA Sorento) has a slow leak, so much so that I had to find a gas station with an air pump to pump up the tire every couple of hours. First of all, drive a car with a leaky tire is NOT safe! Second, it was such a hassle! When I rent a car, especially from Hertz, I expect a safe vehicle in good condition that provide me with the mobility and convenience, not extra trouble! BTW. When I called their Customer support about the problem, the person I spoke to (after 20+ minutes of waiting) had the audacity to tell me that I will be charged in the event that they (Hertz) had to send someone over to put on the spare tire. So let me understand it correctly: First they give me a car with a tire problem, then instead of apologizing and compensate me for the trouble, they are going to charge me for the problem?? Are you kidding me?? Is this the kind of reputation that Hertz want?? This is the last time I will rent from this Hertz location. read more

THE WORST LOCATION I HAVE EVER BEEN TO. They are SO rude and incompetent here. They decided to close early one day without calling ANY customer who had a later pickup, so when I got there, they had a sign out that they would be open the following morning. WTF? I got there first time the next morning and they said, "oh we tried calling you but because your reservation expired we don't have any cars available." 1. ZERO missed calls from anyone, so they are flat out liars. 2. How do you not roll over a reservation to the next day if you decide to close early???? They told me that there are plenty of cars at the downtown location and that they would comp my Uber. When I got downtown, I was the third person in line. About 8 people came right behind me. The lakeview location told all of these people that there would be cars available. I was the LAST person to get a car. They screwed over the other 8 people behind me. The communication and management is honestly the worst I've ever experienced. On top of that, they double charged me and haven't comped me for the Uber ride. I just tried waiting for customer service on the phone for 35 minutes and it kept ringing. What a joke. I recommend literally ANY other company besides Hertz. Go to Enterprise. These people do not care and it shows through and through. My advice - get new management, care about your customers, and don't close down early without letting anyone know. read more

We rent from this location all the time because, honestly, it's our only option. We live in the area, have no car, and need to go to the 'burbs to visit family often. Almost every weekend they "run out of cars" and we have to wait until someone returns a car. We are President's Circle, but they do not care. Well, that's not true. If we get a few of the regular weekend guys, they will try to treat us right. They have the crappiest selection of cars around. They all have tons of miles. Another annoyance is that they close at 1:00 pm and don't have a drop box so you can drop the car off after hours. Instead you have to drop it off at Sheffield and pay extra because you dropped off at another location. Some of the employees are ok and they are always busy and always running around, but some are just plain rude. Unfortunately, we will probably continue to rent from here because zip car and maven are just too expensive for rentals over a few hours. You can beat $30 to use a car for 24 hours. I just wish they would stop overbooking and staff this place right so it would be a most pleasant experience. read more

If I could give zero stars, I would. Never, ever again, will I rent a car from Hertz. Super easy to make reservation online. I was even able to tell them the time frame I wanted them to pick me up. Only problem is, #1 they didn't show up because #2 they don't tell you that you have to call the day prior to actually schedule the pick up. The website is misleading because it doesn't really tell customers to call prior and when asking the customer service representatives, they "don't know why" but I could "talk to the IT guys that created the website to get an answer". When I finally did get to the rental center, Monique was rude and did not take a single moment to explain anything to me. She did not go over the fact that they put a deposit on my card for extra charges. She did not tell me where to find the car. She did not go over my contract. She did not tell me how/where to drop the car off. She did not go over a single detail. She just handed me the booklet you get when you rent a car and handed me the keys. She moved on quickly to the next customer. One thing that sticks out in my mind (and is the icing on the cake in my opinion) is when I asked her specifically if I had the car through Sunday, she just said, "yeah" and that was it. When I created the reservation online I stated that I would be back on Sunday at 6:00 PM. The reservation confirmation that I had the car until Monday May 13 at 7:00 AM. The car was returned on Sunday May 12 around 7:00 PM but somehow I was charged for an extra day. Because Monique did not go over dropping off the vehicle, I called on Saturday to cover that. When I spoke with Jeff, the manager of this location, he stated that I would not get charged extra as long as I had the vehicle back before open on Monday. Which I did. Atrocious customer service skills, horrid all-around experience. I would not recommend Hertz to my mortal enemy. Never, ever again will they get my business. After all of these horrible reviews on Yelp, I wish I had done my due diligence and found out their practices before renting. Save yourself the hassle and go with another company. read more

I'm giving these guys the lowest rating available due to terrible customer service and fraudulently charging me for insurance. I rented a car from this location on 5/29. I informed the front desk agent that, since this was a rental for business purposes, I was not to be charged for insurance as my company covers. He said okay; however, when I arrived at my destination, I noticed that I was charged for insurance anyway. I immediately called the branch, informed them of the above, and asked to have the insurance charge taken off my bill. The manager laughed at me and said that once I drove off, the insurance couldn't possibly be taken off my bill. On March 27, 2015, I rented a car from this branch. It was a same-day after hours return. I picked up the rental around 7:10 am. The car was returned shortly after 11 pm that night. I made the rental through Hotwire and had a total charge of approximately $59. A few days later, I show a charge for $82.20 from Hertz instead of the original Hotwire charge. I called the location to get clarification on why this is the case. This was approximately 8:00 am on April 2nd. I spoke with a representative named Seth who claimed that he was the manager of this branch. He insisted that I was charged for two days because the car was checked in the next day. I told him that I made a similar rental a few days earlier - March 15th - to be exact and had the same arrangement. I picked up the car at approximately 7:10 am and returned it shortly after 11:00 pm. I was charged for one day, not two. Given my previous experience, I asked him what the difference was between the rental on the 15th and the 27th. It was at this point that Seth started raising his voice and getting rude. He even went as far as saying, "Well, there is a sign outside that said that car returns will be charged the next day. Did you just ignore that?" It was at this point that I also told him that I did read the sign. He then interrupted me and said, "So you did just ignore it?" I then told him sternly that the point I am trying to clarify is why there is a difference then with the charge made on the 15th versus the charge made on the 27th. He refused to clarify this. I decided to end the call and went a different route. I called the 800 number where I wound up speaking with a representative named Ricky. He told me that the car I rented on the 27th was checked in at 9 am the day after as opposed to the car I rented on the 15th which was checked in at 7 am. I then asked why I am being charged for two days when there is a difference of 2 hours. On top of this, both cars were returned the night before. The 2828 N Clark St branch opens at 7 am. I should not be penalized if they did not check in my returned rental earlier than 9 am. He then rudely responded that Hertz does not charge by the hour. I told him that I get that but it still didn't make sense why I am being charged when I had no control on when the location was going to check in the rental. I then asked for a manager. He transferred me to another location instead of his manager. The location I was transferred to was 215 W Lake St in downtown Chicago. I spoke to Keith who was confused at first that I was transferred by corporate to their location but was refreshingly polite and helpful. He looked into my issue and clarified that I should not have been charged for two days because the return vehicle check in is not in my control. Later in the afternoon, he called me back and told me that his manager, Chris Jenkins, has approved the charge back. He also said that he will follow up with me. While he has been quite helpful, the experience has left me with no desire to do business with Hertz at all. BOTTOMLINE, I RECOMMEND NEVER RENTING FROM THIS LOCATION, AND IF YOU HAVE A CHOICE, AVOID HERTZ ALTOGETHER. read more
