I took my honey on a trip to a cow farm down the road. He lovesss cows (he's with me and I eat like a cow so our relationship makes sense) so after all the cuddling and petting and stomping in cow crap we worked up a true appetite. I saw this deli was fairly close so I suggest we go. I can't tell y'all how good and FAST this service was. The sandwich I got was so hefty (like me) Delicious (like Oreos) and filling (like cow petting) my honey bit into his unique sandwich and the egg squirted across the table and everything lol the yoke ran everywhere!! This place is hopping! I was in town to drop off a kid at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London. Even though the hotel served breakfast, we wanted to have one last special family breakfast - Herb's Country Deli was definitely a great choice. You know a breakfast diner is awesome when it's busy as early as 8:30am - way before the after church rush. There seemed to be a full house of regulars and larger parties. We didn't have a reservation and most seats were full, but the staff put some tables together to accommodate our group of eight. This was our first time at Herb's and the servers were super friendly and welcoming. Our server did a great job making the breakfast specials sound amazing and was patient as we decided what to order. One of the ladies even brought us toasted samples of their 'Elvis Bread' and blueberry bread which were moist, delicious and homemade! Between the eight of us we had a little of everything: sausage gravy and biscuits, steak and eggs, 'Woman Sized Breakfast', Monte Christo sandwich, Pastrami Hash and eggs, Smoked Salmon Benedict, Sweet Potato Hash, Stuffed Strawberry French Toast, cut fruit, country potatoes, even pancakes I believe. Everyone had clean plates. We even left with a loaf of Elvis bread and a small chocolate cream pie from the case in the country store. We were so busy visiting and eating that we didn't even take pictures of the food. For as busy as they were, we never felt rushed or hurried even as folks were lining up waiting for tables. I'm so glad we choose Herb's because now my kid knows a great local place to eat when they have liberty from the CGA. We've already recommended it to other families when visiting their cadets. This diner really had me feeling like I was in a hallmark movie. I really felt like I stepped into a much simpler life walking in here. It was so cute and homey. I will assume it's family run because there were cute family pictures hanging on the wall. My turkey BLT wrap was good and the pastrami hash received rave reviews from the table as well. We had lunch here today. It was busy, but we got a table right away. The waitress was really friendly, the service was great, and the food was delicious. I got the Pulled Pork Sandwich served on a toasted onion bun. It had a little helping of delicious home made cole slaw. It came with French Fries. It was $15.95. My friend had the Ruben sandwich, and it looked really good. Both our sandwiches were chock full of meat. No skimping! They have a great little restaurant. This place is a hidden gem! (Not so much hidden as it is on the main road, but driving by, you might not expect much - but everyone needs to come here!) This place is LEGIT. Breakfast all day. Great lunches. Great specials. Great service. It's a little small, but it has huge character and charm. My lunch companion goes so frequently that the waitress remembered his (rather complex) order. Lots of pies and cakes in the refrigerated cases up front. Some sauces and tchotchkes up there too. Tee shirts and coffee cups. A smallish dining area. But clean, and comfortable. The food is SOLID. Very good diner fare. Pretty much what you expect, and a bunch you don't. Make sure you stop at the country store if there's a wait it's so fun to look around at all the fruit and veggies they have along with a bunch of jams and things they make themselves. You may even get a free sample i also got some free samples of their banana bread and their Elvis bread, which is banana chocolate chip bread. My wife and I had gone to a concert at the casino the night before. Not familiar with the area I saw the reviews on Yelp for Herbs and knew I had to try this place. Easy to find we were welcomed and shown to a table. Also available was a counter with seats and a window that went to the kitchen. The staff was so friendly (and I mean everyone, not just our server). Immediately we were asked if we could be brought hot coffee or tea. It was especially cold out and the hot tea with honey and fresh lemon hit the spot. We were read a impressive list of specials all which sounded delicious. I had to however go for the first thing on the menu. The potato pancake Benedict. My wife ordered the woman's combination plate. The food came out piping hot and perfectly plated. Let me tell you there's a good reason the potato pancake Benedict is first on the menu. As my dad always said "come out of the gate with the best". I wasn't let down! This Benedict is a thing of beauty. So many fantastic flavors going on. The base...potato pancake was well seasoned grilled to perfection. The combination of fresh sliced tomatoes, onion and baby spinach with perfectly poached eggs and that heavenly hollandaise sauce topping it off made it a breakfast dish that future breakfasts will be judged against. I thoroughly enjoyed this dish. My was also impressed with her eggs, deliciously seasoned home fries, bacon and French toast. As we ate the owner came over to check on us and brought us a sample of homemade fresh grilled peanut butter, chocolate and banana bread. She said they make it fresh daily and it's used as a French toast special. Wow so good. My wife and I agreed that we wish we lived closer so we could try other delicious sounding menu items. Went to this very well known local restaurant on Rte 32 in Montville, CT. This place has been here for decades! We arrived early Sunday morning because if you get here around 9am it would be difficult to get a table. We may have come a bit too early since we were the only ones. Looks like everyone was serving us coffee since there was no one else there. It was they were warming up their engines on us before the crowd would arrive! The waitresses are older women that have been working here for years. They have a good size menu and specials that were placed decoratively on the wall. They had an omelette that was beef, onions and mushrooms but not just any beef it was pot roast. Our waitress told us it would be a moist beef. OMG not only was the omelette huge it was PACKED with awesome tasting pot roast. Is it wrong to fall in love with an omelette???? It also came with toast and home fries. We found Bert's when we left Mohegan Sun last Saturday morning. Our waitress told us the guacamole for the eggs Benedict was fresh and delicious. She was right! Every bite was an explosion of flavor. They had run out of the homemade pastrami hash, so we will make the 2.5 hour trip just to go to Bert's and try the hash! We met Bert's daughter at the register, and she told us about her father's country store next door. That was cool too! Definitely worth the stop if you're in that area. My wife and I frequent this restaurant for breakfast on the weekend and are typically happy with the food and service. One weekday morning I stopped in for breakfast and sat at the counter where there was one other person eating his food. 20 minutes after I placed my order I asked the waitress if my food was coming. This place was great, from the food, the service, the ambiance & the fantastic hometown family feel! Everything is homemade, from the delicious blueberry banana bread to the Elvis bread. The nice thing is while you're looking over your menu & deciding they bring you little samples to try & they were scrumptious! So much so that we had to get 2 loaves (1 of each) to take home! I stopped at Herb's on my way home from Uncasville for some late Monday morning breakfast. It felt like stepping into a weird time machine. This place felt like an odd home/pie store/diner hybrid. It was pretty cute. It's nice to see a place so different instead of the same run of the mill restaurant. All the people working seemed really nice. They were friendly and polite. We got everything we asked for promptly and accurately. The coffee was meh. But as their sign states...don't judge the coffee. Someday you'll be old and weak too. And I try not to complain much about my life fuel. And speaking of which, the tap water tastes like a rusty old pipe. But the food was fast and tasty!! I got the pastrami hash and an apple juice.
